I have had T-Mobile service since 2004 and have been impressed, overall.
From 2004 until mid 2009, I had a monthly plan with them and used them as my primary phone. I usually got service where I needed it. I had noticed that my T-Mobile phone was usually able to get a stronger signal in many places where Verizon got a poor signal. However, when traveling away from the major highways, my phone would lose its signal. This was not a big deal for me since I do not travel to rural areas very frequently.
Call quality was better than other companies that I have used. Reliability was also pretty good. I have had a few outages since starting with them, but none recently.
Recently, I changed to T-Mobile prepaid and use a VOIP service as my primary phone. I realized that most of my calls were placed from home and it is much cheaper not use the cell phone at home. I now paid $100 and have 1 year to use the balance. I seem to use 50-100 minutes per month, so this works out well for me.
If you are mostly concerned about coverage in urban areas, then T-Mobile is probably a good choice. However, if you like to get signal in the middle of nowhere, then it is best that you look somewhere else.
