"Trying to think of one..."
"Technical Support has gone to heck"
"Stuck with them as no competition"

Last Friday morning, 11/20, I upgraded by DSL account from 1.5Mbps to 10Mbps. Was told the new speed would be available in 1-2 hours. checked 4 hours later, still had 1.5 Mbps. Called Tech support, was told "No, that takes 24 hours." Fine, gave it all weekend and still had 1.5Mpbs. Called Tech Support again as was told by the rep there that I needed to call customer assistance and he gave me an 800 #. Called customer assistance only to be told, sorry, we're Embarque, you need to call CenturyTel. I was under the impression Embarque and CenturyTel merged forming CenturyLink but noooooooooooooo. Finally got a hold of someone who said they were CenturyTel customer Assistance who had no idea why I was calling them as they said my account had already been changed to 10Mbps. She advised to call Tech Support back again. So I did, and next rep tells me it'll be until 5 PM on 11/25 before upgrade would take place but could no provide an explanation as to why so long. Everyone else in my neighborhood that did this upgrade needed an new modem and even though my modem is older than any of theirs, Tech Support says I don't need an new modem even though what I read here is that Westel model c90-610014-6 rev D won't support ADSL2+ which I guess is what I'll be getting. I'll bet 11/25 will come and go and still no 10Mbps service and will have yet mores hours on the phone trying to get done which should have been simple. Including the hour I was on the phone waiting to get a live rep to do the upgrade and the calls to tech support, I'm 3 hours into this. And the tier 1 reps at tech support no longer bump you to a higher level, they have to "chat" with tier 2 and relay the message back. Past dealings with CenturyTel were always pleasant and they were always helpful which is way more than I can say for CenturyLink. Come on competition! I'd drop my phone lines and DSL service in a heartbeat if there was an alternative.

I used to have Cox, but the price became unbearable and speeds were inconsistent. I ordered the "Pure" Broadband service and use the dialtone for a free incoming fax line!

I have to 3.0M package. Had dsl in my current home for about 9 months now. I get the advertised speeds. I haven't had really any issues. Connection very stable. The price is a little steep for the speeds but the plans aren't to overly priced.

"Nothing... Worst ISP ever!"
"After those 2 weeks, my speeds were throttled so much that I was unable to play on Xbox Live..."
"I've had Knology/Comcast/Time Warner and now CenturyTel/CenturyLink... This is by far the WORST of them all..."

    • What other options did you consider for broadband

Comcast cut me off due to going over my bandwidth limit (... and no, I had NO clue there was such a thing)....

    • What SPEED/package did you order, at what monthly price?

    Only the 6mb/sec was available

    • How was the order & install process?

It was relatively smooth until I got my first bill.. The installers and lady on the phone FAILED to mention that there was a 30$ next-day-delivery fee for the DSL-Modem (Linx L-220) that the installer brought with him. That along with the 5$/month rental fee (which I did know about)... I could have bought the damn modem for the price of the hidden fee+1st month rent...

    • What brand/model was the supplied equipment?

    Linx L-220

    • What good or bad experiences most struck you?

The above mentioned and my internet being throttled MASSIVELY.

    They don't throttle

CenturyTel doesn't throttle. Check out the forums...it's been proven time and time again.

I'd recommend stopping by. Many techs visit there and may be able to help with your problem.

    Tricky $29 delivery charge

My modem went out 2 months ago, called support and they said they would send me a replacement. She checked my records and saw where I pay a modem lease fee & told me there would be no charge.

The next day I had a brand new modem at my front door, and the next month, a 29 dollar overnight delivery charge on my bill. Which reminds me, I need to call CL and have the modem lease agreement removed from my bill. They can have this one back, I have several Westell 6100's I bought off of ebay recently.

First I tried a local Wireless ISP. After I learned my lesson, I went to CenturyTel to get internet service. When inquiring about Internet, depending on which day I called, I would get a different answer every time. I then called the local supervisors secretary who then set me up with all the proper quotes. The only thing that was hidden was a $1.25 "Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee" for internet. (She didn't hide it, it just wasn't on any literature or website small print) This is a fee by CenturyTel and being it is mandatory then it should be included in the price. They are not collecting it on behalf of any other agency. (that's my only rant) Once that was done, everything went smooth. I got the 512/256 package at $29.95 a month. They did have some promos/bundles, but I chose not to take one to stay out of a contract. I bought my own modem off eBay, set-up was a snap. I'm not far from the RO and sync rates are right on and always a stable connection. Speed is as advertised most of the time, except for peak times. (After school is the worst) Only last a couple of hours at the most. FYI, Pings are around 65-75ms. I waited a month to test the service and see if billing is correct and they have been spot on. I believe this again is due to using the local secretary to place my order. She was great. I haven't used tech support so I don't know about that part. I do use their landline and it has never gave me a problem.

    Update 10-14-2009

It's been about 6 months and here's what's new. No billing issues at all. Great Job!

Uptime for my DSL, 99.9% I can remember 1 time that it was out for about 3-4 hours. I believe it was a fiber cut out of state. So I say Great Job!

Latency is 70-85 on good days, 95-115 on bad days, some days better than others. I don't game, so I don't care much on this.

Keeping up the backbone (bandwidth) is their flaw. It's not terrible, but they definitely let it go a little too long before they add another T-1. Hopefully things will improve as I know they have been getting new procedures for identifying this. We'll see, and I'll update again.

Fast Install on time to when they said they would be. Did not know if a faster speed would be attainable. Still haven't heard an answer. Useful Tech Support to bridge the modem to router VERY POLITE AND HELPFUL TECH SUPPORT. West-ell modem proprietary to Century-Link. High Latency. Somewhat buggy as time goes by...tech support have pretty generic responses for the problem have switched modem (owned) and have more luck since. wish they were faster speeds at a better price.

    Welcome

    Hi Sheridan,

I'm a CT tech in Missouri. If you will PM me your telephone number and contact info, I'll see what speeds are available to you. Also, the Westell modems are wide open, not crippled with CT firmware. FYI. There is also a CT forum here....»CenturyTel

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Wireless B..
I live out in the boonies. I have tried Hughesnet, and verison wireless broadband. The DSL is a step up from both. Its not perfect and i'd love to see them try to at least get you close to their published speeds. But untill something better is available out here I'll stick with it.

Looked at Verizon mobile data but I'm not comfortable with Cell phone companies policy of just letting people run up absurd overages rather than just contacting the customer when they get close to their monthly limit.

CenturyTel just started offering their "Extended Internet" (which translates into we are too cheap to install a cabinet) recently to this area, at least officially. A couple of neighbors have contacts with local CT employees, so they were able to get it 6 months or more ago.

I called them on a Tuesday and received the modem friday morning by UPS. The lineman showed up in the afternoon but wasn't optimistic at that point about getting the signal here. He called later in the afternoon to inform me that I now had a connection, although there was a lot of noise on the line.

After about a week they got things fairly stable, now seems to stay synced at 352 down and 256 up instead of jumped all over the place. They charge me for 1.5Mb service in any case. Some test results at »/testhistory/1656151/adcfa

Update 19 Sept 2009: DSL and dial-tone dead since 18 Sept 2009 4PM. Neighbor had his go down the day before. Lineman told him the wiring is falling apart up here in the hills.

Update 21 Sept 2009: DSL back around 10AM, so that's about a 66 hour outage, not impressed.

Update 9 Oct. 2009: Ever since the outage the modem has been reporting a upload sync of 128 but only a margin of 1db. As a result actual upload speeds are in the range of 10kbs to 20kbs. Contacted Centurytel, both via phone in Louisiana and in person locally. In both cases they don't care.
