I can believe they are starting to upgrade towards full DOCSIS 3.0 compliance..........but that process could take years (and billion$ ) before 3.0 is system wide.
Because DOCSIS 3.0 is (should be) backward compatible, not all equipment MUST be replaced at once, and new modem deployment would be the last step.
Why would that be the last step ?? Why would 3.0 even be implimented if no one were able to take advantage of it ??
That's not logical to me......

what are the MAX speeds that the current doscis comcast is using can achieve? until 3.0 does become a reality, why not just give us those max speeds?

First step (for each deployment area) would be to plan and engineer any nessesary line extensions or improvements. then schedule and complete those, adding a DOCSIS 3 CMTS as it is completed. At the same time or before they must shift the DHCP and DNS to be fully IPv6 compliant (required by DOCSIS3)and change channel allocations splitting or combining nodes, etc Up until this is done CC only needs a few thousand modems for QC testing and tech training.
Once customer deployment begins they may require several million modems within a couple years time (not everyone will feel the need to jump to a higher (and probably more expensive) tier at once. older 1.1 & 2.0 modem will continue to work at the lower speeds.

One major public relations problem will be the timing.
Obviously, they either have to delay switchover until the vast majority of areas are ready (expensive and slow) or do it region by region, and withstand the screaming from un-upgraded areas ("I pay the same as Region X users but can't get the speeds they get............" think of the current " they got upgraded first" whining seen here everyday, times 10)
once CC give the word to one or more vendors that they need a million modem by (insert date) how long do you think would it take to ramp up the factories in china, etc,. to pump them out?

The longer it takes to get to that point the more compiant designs will be available, important for CC cost control.
And all through this they must continue to maintain the current system without major interruption.

I think that's what the 16/1 (2) represents, maybe 1/2 the theoretical limits of 1.1, but as high as is practical to upgrade the plant to before going to DOCSIS 3.
Why expend time and money splitting nodes and adding channels for a temporary fix, when you could work towards a long term solution? In fact filling all the channels now could cause problems when they switch as 3 uses differently allocated (wider) channels.
the DOCSIS 3 workgroup(wisely) decided to avoid an interim 2.0+/2.0B half assed fix, now it is time for the ISP part of the group to push ahead and use the standard they agreed to.
The other side of major providers ALL heading towards higher speeds will be a shortage of backbone, switch capacity, and server bandwidth at the content end.

For what it's worth, bumped into a Comcast tech near my place yesterday. Asked him when we are getting the upgrade. He thought it was scheduled for June, at 16/2. (Denver)

i am thinking and hoping(the key word being hoping lol) that some time after the up and coming upload powerboost, we will get final upgrades this year and they will be the same as powerboost: 6/384 upgraded to 12/1 and 8/768 upgraded to 16/2-that would be TOO sweet!

Re: Most reliable recent rumor is: "Comcastic 50 Mbps!"

I personally have been very unhappy since I got switched over to Comcast from Timewarner. They supposedly are using the same hardware & lines that Timewarner was using in the area and just simply changed the IP's. Either way the route is now through ATT which has had notorious peering problems for my company and our Global Crossing line. I have been tracking anywhere from 6%-18% packet loss since getting switched. Primarily in our city (inner suburb of Minneapolis/St Paul), and again at the peering address between Comcast & ATT. 2 techs have admitted to me now that they are seeing this across the entire metro area on new installs to the former Time Warner area. I've also tracked this information from 3 other suburbs affected by the switchover.

If Comcast is seriously thinking about upgrading the service they need to throw down some serious $$$ to get their infrastructure in place. Aside from that they need to work on their peering issues with ATT. I have documented this loss since 10/25/06 and have complained about the service repeatedly during this time. In January I was actually told by Comcast they will not resolve the line and to cancel my service.

Re: Most reliable recent rumor is: "Comcastic 50 Mbps!"

From what I inderstand(I could be wrong), the AT&T routers at the peering points are - not Comcast. They belong to AT&T and AT&T needs to un-bork them.

We here in Cali know all too well about AT&T peering.
Comcast will likely be replacing equipment in your area as well(search for CRAN).

This will not happen overnight. It does take time to get things sorted out and equipment replaced.

They replaced EVERYTHING here in my market(formerly AT&T). Took 'em about a year. Kicks ass now though! ;)

Re: Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic Part II

The peering issue is only part of it. They are having difficulties on the inside of their own network. When they come out with their little testing device (wish I had a name for it) it only tests out to the local node. The first point of contact from the cable modem. Their problems are happening throughout the former Time Warner lines on the Comcast network. Here is an example of what I've been tracking for the last 3.5 months. This is just the last 24 hours. This is absolutely boggling the techs & the area service manager (who I just got off the phone with). I appologize ahead of time for the mess that WinMTR makes.

any word or rumors on if/when we're supposed to get powerboost for upload? it sure would be nice especially if it turns into permaboost!
It was said in the announcement on here a while back that they were starting this month. Just imagine upload Permaboost. A full 2-3 megs for an entire upload.

Re: Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic Part II

I don't know if this means anything but when i ordered the Comcast triple play the guy on the phone said that comcast will upgrade the 6/384 upload to 1meg ..said sometime at the end of this month (Feb) ...

But i am seeing some nice d/l speeds on my 6meg line

Download Speed: 20153 kbps (2519.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

which is pretty good for being at 4pm

I know it's powerboost...but thats pretty good of a boost for being on the 6meg plan..and for being during peak hours.

I guess im just happy with Comcast as to when i use to have them at my moms in a town over..

Re: Most reliable recent rumor is: "Comcastic 50 Mbps!"

I also get my full 8Mbps constantly. Plus 30Mbps on powerboost. I believe if they offer 50Mbps that I will get that.

So I questioned the tech manager & the lead tech that has been coming out to try and "troubleshoot" their peering issue at my house. Neither has any knowledge of Comcast upgrading to Docsis 3.0 and claim to have not heard any rumors either.

Just spoke to an inside guy yesterday at comcast in Independence Mo. and yes docsis 3.0 is being integrated and they are working out a few minor bugs right now. he said it should all be up and running as of this summer.

All well and good, but without DOCSIS 3.0 capable modems, a 3.0 network is useless. I've only seen one 3.0 modem which has not been certified yet.

If comcast rolls out 3.0 you can bet that you will see capable modems start poping up like crazy.

I think you're overestimating the time it takes to design, certify, and bring to market a DOCSIS product. With a planned nationwide roll-out of upload PowerBoost in the May+ timeframe, I think talking now about DOCSIS 3.0 is a bit optimistic.

Re: Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic Part II

My HSI and DV both went down last night, twice, an hour apart, for about 20 minutes at a time. Checked the modem configuration screen and Comcast had pushed new firmware to the modem. Arris TM402P modem, had firmware from June, 2006 when I had DV installed, new firmware is dated Nov 16, 2006.

Hopefully they are getting ready for speed change (?).

I can tell you that when modems get certified, normally you won't see that model for 2 to 3 years offered by an ISP for lease or by retailers for purchase. Given the rumour that Comcast will roll-out DOCSIS 3.0 at the end of summer 07, it is unrealistic given that no 3.0 modems have been certified as of 3/10/07.

I was told by a local tech that the big reason for a firmware upgrate to Arris to 5.05 was to improve diagnostics.
