Receive Window

hi i need help i bought a router so i read that i needed to change the tcp receive window to a new number but now my surfboard modem isn't getting fast speeds anymore. I changed it to something else because i was going to use my router but now that i bought a crappy router i decided to use the modem without the router and it is getting below what i usually would get. A few days ago before i changed the tcp i was getting speeds of 6mb or 700 and now i am getting 300. I was wondering if you guys know what i should change the tcp back to. Thanks for any help.

Re: Receive Window

You don't have a 6k line, you have a 6000k line, run that test again, but you do need to change your MTU to 1492 at least. :)

Re: Receive Window

According to your tweak test, you indicated that you're using Vista.

I haven't researched it much if at all really but it's my understanding that your RWIN in vista is automatically calculated and hence, Dr.Tcp is incompatible with tweaking this setting.

Re: Receive Window

As Champer suggested, your MTU is showing up as being incorrect for your connection in that tweak test BUT that might be a Vista /drtcp incompatibility issue and not really be the case. It's my understanding though that with Vista, these settings are no longer manually adjusted through the registry (which is what DrTcp accesses and allows you to do)and so, if you previously changed these it probably really didn't do anything..you just thought it did.

What kinds of speeds do you see on speed test sites such as speakeasy?

Perhaps this slowdown isn't on your end, but is an issue with the service you're using.

Some routers can cause speed issues but most of them that I've seen involve people not being able to get above 8000k ~9000k or so on connections that should give them 10,000k +. I had a netgear router that I just did away with because of that issue. Being now on comcast, I'd get up to 20,000k without it connected..and less than 8000 or 9000k with it connected.

Re: Receive Window

What I would do at this point is to use system restore to go back to a point to before you made these changes a few days ago.
I don't know where it is in Vista but in XP you do this..

click Start...
All programs..
accessories...
system tools...
system restore...

you would then select "restore my computer to an earlier time" and select a date and restore point to a time before you did this the other day.

The issue here appears to be that your tweak test doesn't look right but Dr. Tcp is incompatible with Vista and shouldn't have been used in the first place. I don't know whether these are actual readings or not. It might be giving a bogus result because it's not compatible.

You've stated that this all started the other day when you made these changes, so perhaps it inadvertently did something it shouldn't have.
Because that's all unknown at this point, I'd just suggest you restore your computer back to a point prior to any of this having been done.

You should also note going ahead that it's not necessary to adjust your RWIN in Vista. It does it automatically from what I understand. Also, this speed issue may or may not be due to your router. It could also just be the server you're using having issues or some other factors affecting your connection.
