My review of MagicJack

The forums have been quite insane recently, mainly because of the SunRocket debacle, along with the common madness that DSLR always pleasantly hosts. I am a SR orphan and have since been searching for a relatively cheap alternative. Packet8 seemed like the best choice, but I recently ran into MagicJack, was very intrigued- and promised a few members here that I'd review it when I received the order. Well, today is that day. So here it is:

Ordered: 07/18
Shipped: 07/19
Received: 07/23

It arrived in a surprisingly professional retail-looking package, complete with a hole at the top for hanging on retail shelves. Anyway, I unpacked it and made use of the convenient little USB extension cord included with it.
The most interesting part of setting it up is that fact that the device is ENTIRELY plug and play in XP. On my desktop, it took around 50 seconds to install the various drivers and auto-launch the setup & registration dialogs. I was too excited to take screen shots, I apologize.
The dialog requested my email address, my zip code, and the setup of a password. After that, it wanted my address of 911 registration. I live in South Florida, so when I was prompted to pick a number, I was disappointed to only see about 5 states offered as local numbers currently. But, I read up on the MJ literature, my area code (and most) should be available in the next 60 days, good. I settled for a number out of Detroit. (Meanwhile, I’m using a GrandCentral number to forward to my MJ line.) After I picked my phone number, the screen changed to a normal looking soft-phone (see screen shot.)

I grabbed a cordless phone, plugged it in, and was happy to hear a dial-tone. First call was flawless, perfect clarity. I totally didn’t expect incoming calls to work, but to my surprise my cordless rang when I dialed the Detroit phone number from my cell. Another perfect call. I bought the device purely out of curiosity, not a true solution to a new VoIP provider. Turns out… I seemingly found my solution.
Keep in mind a few things: Price: $40 So obviously, with this price does NOT come with all the fancy features and web portals. Honestly, I wouldn’t expect it.. it’s $40. For those who don’t know, there is $0 monthly charge, only a $19.95 annual fee. That is, frankly, laughable if they are truly going to offer what they say they are. Always the service is still beta, and just launched for purchase earlier this month. I expect more features to be introduced as the service matures. As I type this, I am on the phone using MagicJack. It’s quite impressiveMJ may not be for everyone, but I for one don’t mind having to have the thing plugged in my computer. I would expect MJ to support some adapters coming up in the future. . For those who recognize the swanboy name, you know I’m usually not one to jump up and down with rave reviews, but this is a industry first, revolutionary product in my opinion, and I wanted to get an organized review out there for those who were waiting. I say go for it.
I'd be happy to entertain any questions.

As a side note, I’m looking for a place to port my number for really cheap as a safe-haven for my SR number until MJ supports porting.

Excellent review. I wish I could write as well in so much detail. The professional packaging surprised me also. I figured it would of been sent in generic packaging with some photocopied instructions. It looks like it is going to be very soon when you see MagicJack in mass market retail. The downside was the bubble pack is very difficult to open. This product is just on the verge of being huge.

Re: My review of MagicJack

I decided to order a MagicJack on Thursday after receiving a recommendation from laserjobs.

I received it today. This is an incredible, brilliant device. It is going to be very very big.

I am using it with 3 Uniden cordless phones and it works perfectly. You have caller id, voice mail, call waiting, a soft phone and conference calling all for only $39.95 which includes 1 year of service. The second year of service is only $19.95.

In my opinion, the MagicJack is going to destroy ALL of the voip providers as you would have to be insane to go with Vonage, Packet8, ViaTalk....when you could just purchase a MagicJack.

Do yourself a favor and order the MagicJack. This thing is just amazing. Be sure to use the coupon code sunrocket for free shipping.

In addition, they thought of everything. They even include for free, an optional USB cable extension in case you have a tight space around your USB port.

Well Sunrocketers it looks like the dust is dieing down and Bad Bad TB finally has all the answers anyone would want on their web site now. It's been fun and I just ordered a MagicJack voip and a easy GrandCentral number so I'm set and will be changing over all business cards and ads to my new number (which is for life). If this works out I will port my number to MagicJack later this year and will have unlimited service for
19$ a year so thank you Sunrocket for tanking after all.

I thank all the people that posted their great reviews

I just ordered mine tonight. Thanks for the great review.

Trying to port my sr number to voicestick next2nothing which is currently configured on a pap2t adapter with their temp number. So far I'm happy, will be happier once my number ports and dont need another account but for this price I said WTF!

I would use this for all my outgoing calls of course since its free but I need to support Voicestick a bit so they dont deactivate me. But I guess if I am going through my prepaid mintutes too fast I can make outgoing calls on MJ. "MJ" makes me think of the chick from Spiderman :D

Might also be an inexpensive way of easing my parents into voip. There somewhat technophobes...

Great Swanboy..

I'm using MJ for over a week now and I will say I'm extremely satisfied with it. I tried it with multiple applications like during video processing, dvd burning, large file downloading/uploading, heavy file transfers on torrents and I have never faced any problem except for uploading of files/ torrents files. This may be due to limited bandwidth for my uploading (around 400). This looks like real alternative to any VOIP provider and the price is really great.

I has really surprised me! And I agree with the comment about the packaging being a little difficult to open. Other than that, it's great. I might get one for christmas for my friend and maybe a few others. I am also going to use one at work so I can have my own instant line that can call cellphones, etc.

If someone could get this to work with the Linksys NSLU2 that would be awesome. I guess the only prob I could think of would be that you have to have a computer on all the time. Question for the users that have this, can you plug it into a wall phone jack and have it propogate to all the jacks in the house? Oh and is this device using the SIP protocal?

But isn't that all that needs to be said? It's just not a workable business model, even less so than Sunrocket's was. These people aren't Google (who could afford to give it away for years if they chose) -- how can they continue to exist while giving away phone service?

The technology sounds OK -- an instant PBX of sorts via USB stick -- though you could accomplish the same thing any number of ways if you've already chosen to dedicate your PC to the task (Asterisk et al.) as you need to with MagicJack -- but it's the ongoing service that's got to be a primary concern!

EDIT: RockyBB, who knows this stuff intimately, has estimated elsewhere that providers pay about $.01 per minute for POTS calls. $19.95 per year means their "break even" would be an average customer use of less than 3 hours per month (assuming I just did the math correctly). If customers just use it when traveling, that might just work after all! But if people try to use it as home phone replacement....

Here's what their web site has to say about how they can afford it:

Question

How can you offer all this for such a low price?
Answers

The Inventor and CEO of the Company previously shattered the price barrier on consumer telephone services. They have now joined together to bring you the newest technology to enable you to get free telephone service.
Uh, okay, if you say so....?

Re: My review of MagicJack

Why would any business state their business model on their website? Put it out for any other business to try to copy it. I don't think so.

Anyway, there is more involved if you have been following this for any length of time. YMax Communications is the CLEC that MagicJack operates on. This CLEC gets a fee anytime an incoming call is placed to their network. There is also advertising involved with their softphone software. Now you start to see more of the bigger picture.

Yeah. I was trying to bite my tongue above. Any mention of advertising and I'm running the other way.

This sounds eerily reminiscent of those "free" ISP services (dialup and even broadband) that depended on locked advertising bars across your screen. Even KMart ran one.

Only now, instead of tracking all your web site visits and targeting accordingly, they're tracking your personal phone calls!

Maybe that's worth it for some people, but I don't predict big things for this.

While I understand the stereotype here regarding ad-drive-revenue and free services, I really don't think all companies have to be crap just because they implement some kind of advertisement. The best example I can cite here is Google They have seamlessly integrated ad's, and look and their revenue and quality of service they offer. I'm not trying to say MJ is the next google by any means, I'm simply saying there is potential.

Personally, I have no problem with a few ad's on the side of my softphone window, if it comes to that.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Got mine today and have been testing various features. It's going to be a great second phone, but I don't see myself using it for a main line just yet. The reviews above are accurate in terms of setup and call quality. But, being picky I just have to throw a small wet blanket on things (and yes I know this is a bargain basement deal, so I really shouldn't be expecting much):

- There doesn't appear to be a way to change the time stamp on the voicemail, which is off by 5 hours for me here in the Eastern time zone. There is no web interface for voicemail, so there isn't a way to turn it off or adjust the number of rings before it picks up. Also, I've noticed the outgoing message to callers often gets clipped at the beginning. All in all, the VM leaves a lot to be desired.

Next in line to be fixed would be outgoing caller ID, right now it shows "Southfield MI" for my Detroit number (actually it's a local exchange for Maybee, MI - located in Monroe County).

Also, there is no name with inbound caller ID and if you add names to the contact list in the softphone, they are only displayed on the computer - not on your phone handset.

My install had one hiccup - the sound driver for MagicJack sets itself as the default, requiring a manual fix in Windows Control Panel. Not a biggie and MagicJack has this info available on its web site.

All in all, this service shows a lot of promise -- and I'm more than happy with what it does for what I paid.

Re: My review of MagicJack

I've been using Magicjack for three days now and yes the service does work, but apart from all the other complaints, I've also got to add that when a call is initiated or received, the soft phone application pops up and it can get annoying if you receive lots of calls during the time someone is trying to use the computer.

Now it can be avoided if you install MJ on a computer that no one hardly uses, but that may not be acceptable to everyone.

Other than that, I have not had any calls dropped. I called from Majicjack to my other VOIP line and the call quality was good.

Decent product overall and I plan on using it in my travels and not as a primary home phone device

Re: My review of MagicJack

I've had one for a week now. I love it!

I bought it so that my 7yo daughter could have a phone to talk to her friends while they play games online, but it works so well that I'm planning to plug the rj11 plug from the MagicJack into the FXO port of my ATA and use it for all outbound calls. Inbound calls will come from the low-cost service that I port my number to, so I should end up with RIDICULOUSLY inexpensive outbound service, with inbound coming via SIP (no per minute charges there, either).

So for initial outlay of $39.95 for the MagicJack, $30 to port my number to a PAYG service, and $8-$10 per month (depending on whether I use Inphonix or Quantumvoice to port my number to), I'll have full inbound and outbound service using my old phone number.

That's tough to beat!

I have 2 lines currently. One is used as a "business" line and for FAX. That line will be disconnected (eventually, presuming that MJ works as expected). Today, it's only connection is to a 2-line Panasonic cordless base station in my 'office'. That unit is within 5 feet of all my computers, one of which will get the MJ installed. I'll run a line from that computer/MJ to the base station - which gives me cordless access throughout the house and outdoors.

Don't be. The only possibility is that the phones will attempt to draw more power from the USB port than possible, in which case, it simply won't work. Nothing of this will fry your port, much less your computer.

1st) I have had a Skype line for over a year so I bought a Philips wireless / PC-less phone for Skype.
2) I bought a MagicJack and connected it.
3) I use GrandCentral for my local number.

Now when anyone calls my local number (GC) while the computer is on....it rings my Skype phone and my MagicJack at the same time....just depends which phone I want to answer from. When I have the computers off....the Philips wireless Skype phone rings. Either way I get my calls through GrandCentral and everything is superb. It's not as difficult as it sounds and it also gives me two call out lines (one when the PC is off). BTW, I have the MagicJack connected to my home line with one base and 5 wireless phones.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Another review of sorts.

My MJ arrived in the mail yesterday.
Setup was as easy and fast as already described, so I won't bore you with that again.

Hooked it up to my laptop and did the registration and number selection thing - temporarily took a Maryland area code/exchange until they get set up in New York. Unplugged my POTS line 2 from the Panasonic 2-line cordless base station, and plugged in the line from the MJ. Works like a charm. Made several calls - clarity is better than the POTS line was.

Today I pulled the MJ from the laptop and plugged in to a desktop - it installed the software and was available in about a minute. (As might be expected, your service/account/phone # information is stored either in the MJ itself, or the MJ has a 'key value' that retrieves it from a central server when it connects to a USB port). Plugged the line from the MJ into my HP Photosmart 3310 AIO, and reconnected the 'out' line from the HP to my Panasonic base station. Inbound and outbound calls still work fine.
FAXed to a friend of mine, both at V.17 (medium) and V.34 (Fast) speeds - worked like a charm.

As always, YMMV.

But for me, thank you MJ. You've just saved me $460 annually vs. POTS. Now all I have to do is get my GrandCentral setup the way I want it.....

Important note: this is a second POTS line in the house, and is a "business" line. My primary line is still a POTS line, and I also have multiple cell phones. So, this works perfectly for me. I also have multiple computers that run 24/7 anyway - when not being used for work they're running FAH or RAH
»Team Helix

Since this works so well, and is hooked up to the cordless base station - it will be used for all long distance land-line calls from now on... :)

Via a software update last night, the UI has changed a little. There is now a place to dynamically select (and add) your 911 address. Given the mobile nature of MagicJack service, this is a very good thing to have, and provides for the best safety as well.

Majicjack vs. skype

Skype is $60 a year for both in and out calling to non skype phones ($30 in and $30 out). Majicjack is only $40 for the first year and $19.95 for the second year.

I use skype as my back up phone, I use my cell phone exclusively (no landline). This will save me some money and if it has good enough quality, I will use it and save some minutes on my cell phone.

I need some kind of a backup phone in case there is a major natural catastrophe here (southern California). I have access to satellite internet and I have tested Skype on it. Skype was, for lack of a better description, simplex, not duplex, but I could have short conversations with people. I will test out Majicjack on the satellite and see how that works out. I will use it to contact family out of state when "The BIG One" hits.

I bought a magicjack, in fact I bought 2. I tried to use the free shipping "sunrocket" code on them. no go. So I just paid for the two I bought and left a note that I could not use that code. I was told that shipping could not be combined. I spent $14 for $2.32 postage stamp. Yes shipping could be combined but not for me! Both jacks came in a single padded envelope combined!. I voiced my dismay . but it fell on deaf ears Including at at least 1 of the big 3 boys mentioned here. I see if you buy off ebay, (6.99 with $3.99 ea after that) they can somewhat combine shipping. but even the full price of the reduced shipping of the second device is more than real the cost of shipping. I think the overall price of the "jack" should be based on the excessive shipping charge ($47). BTW I was never responded with my shipping concerns other than the response "shipping can not be combined" even though both came in 1 envelope with a $2.32 stamp on it. Its not $39.99!!! add $7 because that is the price! 1 to 100! no shipping discount!

I guess you never bought anything on ebay before.... Why do you think its worthwhile for merchants to sell for a penny on ebay??? They make money on the shipping - so what, do the math in your head, if you think the overall price is worth it buy it, if not don't.

Remember, in addition to postage, there are handling costs - they have to pay for the labor of stuffing the envelopes and those envelopes arent free either....

Magicjack is a great deal for $40 or $47, even given their flaws. And the second year for $20 is dirt cheap too.

Re: My review of MagicJack

I just got my MagicJack today. It took me some time to get it to work, but I bet some people won't have any trouble. I tried it first on some low level computers I had in order to minimize power consumption. When I tried it on the third computer, it installed without a hitch, but I already had my number at that point.

On one computer, the MJ wouldn't provide a dial tone without a powered USB hub. The blue light not lighting up was the giveaway that I had an underpowered USB connection.

Now that I have it running, I have to say that I couldn't rely on it as my only phone line. My phone doesn't always ring when I call in to the MJ line. When I hang up the MJ line, it doesn't always hang up properly.

Sometimes when I call the MJ, it autoanswers with the phone still on the hook.

But as a second line primarily for making outbound calls, it is a pretty good option.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Playing around with it some more, the sound quality and performance are dependent on how powerful your computer is. I'd say that any computer you buy today would run the MagicJack fine, but my crappy old Toshiba 2065CDS laptop won't cut it. A Pentium III, 450 MHs is marginal on the sound quality, but the hanging up performance is fine. My Pentium 4, 1.8 Ghz has great sound quality, but I'd prefer not to use it for security reasons. None of these machines have USB 2.0. We just got a new HP with USB 2.0, and I am going to try the MJ on that next.

I guess I just feel that if a shipping order can not be combined (even though they were shipped in the same manila padded, envelope with a $2.32 stamp on it), the very least it would come in two packages. As far as shipping goes, a $2.32 stamp on a 65cent padded manila envelope is excessive. Yes 11 bucks overage to put in 2 jacks in a envelope and put a label on it Then wait for the postman to stop by. The proper way to ship this is the 2 pound first class with delivery conformation. I think the postage on that is $4.85.. How you ship and what you charge is important to me as a customer.

Re: My review of MagicJack

MJ support pointed me to a handy utility:

Run it, and then unplug the MJ, wait a bit, and then plug it in again.

I used it to restore the blue light. Sometimes the blue light will go out, and you won't have a dial tone on a phone, but the soft phone will still work. This utility restores the blue light and dial tone. I thought one of my computers had underpowered USB ports, but using the utility fixed the problem.

I now have the MJ on a P3 450 Mhz box, and the sound quality is great. I don't have any problems with hangups (on the phone), and things seem great.

Found out there isn't a way to block my funky Caller ID, but they are working on it.

On the shipping issue, you could look at it as a restocking fee. You are paying $46.90 for each device with free shipping and a 15% restocking fee. Maybe they should describe it that way, or maybe not, but $46.90 doesn't seem unfair for the INCREDIBLE value they are offering.

I see their Tech Chat is back.

anon @ 15th Nov 09:05PM:
Re: My review of MagicJack

I have 2 major problems with this thing.

First its USB instead of ethernet which means I have to run a computer 24/7

This creates my second problem. there most DEFINATELY is a monthly fee. Just because you pay yearly does not mean there is no monthly fee. your just paying 12 monthly fees at a time.

NOW granted its pretty cheap (though NO assurance it will STAY $20 a year) so right now were at $1.67 a month BUT it does not stop there. While this device might only take 500mah at 5v or so the COMPUTER takes quite a lot more.

Your average computer today takes 200-250 watts of power JUST SITTING THERE. Its gonna cost you ALMOST $10 PER MONTH for every 100 watts of power your machine consumes (PLUS maintenance of that machine)

For me and my SPECIALLY BUILT server to record my tv programs thats $7.50 (It takes 74 watts idle) a month but I would not dare risk the reliability of that machine on this device so I would have to built another machine to run this. So figure $150 to build a cheapy machine. Lets ignore that cost for now.

SO the average user is going to pay between $15+$1.66 a month and $25+$1.66 a month in "cost" to use this phone service. If your using an older computer VONAGE's 500 minute a month plan is cheaper is your using a hotter machine to run this Vonages full unlimited $25 a month plan is cheaper (and no computer to keep running and maintaining) etc.. etc.. So this $20 a year phone service turns into $200 a year on an older machine and $275 a year on the hotter machine (I subtracted 15% for NORMAL usage where you would be paying to run that computer anyway)

NOW if I can make this run on my old 233mhz windows 98 tablet computer that I also keep running (weather information display) then I will be a bit more interested since it only costs me $3-$4 a month to run that machine.

On this machine my yearly cost would be max $68 still no where near $20 a year but still a VERY good deal !! ESPECIALLY if I can run more than one on the same machine. Plus its such a slow machine that there are no moving parts except the hard drive so maintenance should be low if not zero. BUT can this machine handle running both WIFI and Magic Jack if it can even run Magic Jack?

If this thing was ETHERNET instead of USB I can not see it consuming more than 1-2 watts. lets assume 2 watts (though I am betting less than 1) but at 2 watts its $2.40 a YEAR in electricity plus the $20 so $22.40 a YEAR

NOW THAT would be a good deal :-)

ALSO if you need it just to MAKE phone calls. Such as KIDS wanting there own line or something like that. IE its only plugged in WHEN they want to talk its also a great deal.

SO PLEASE Magic Jack come out with a ETHERNET version please!!!

The actual magicJack is just an USB to RJ11 adapter with a flash drive and it uses a softphone on your computer for all voice processing. The best VoIP device for power consumption would be an ATA.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Your information is incorrect. Magicjack is far different from skype and is connected to a true local exchange company.

Skype can only call other skype people. Magicjack is true VOIP and can call any phone number whether it be a POTS number or a vonage number or whatever. POTS people can call your magicjack from their regular POTS phone. They can't call a skype number(sip address).

Unlike many VOIP providers that lease lines from POTS companies and are subject to rate increases that put them out of business (Sunrocket, etc.), Magicjack and its parent YMAX communications has built a nationwide network of CLECs (local exchange carriers) so they don't lease their lines from other CLECs. They are their own CLEC.

Magicjack isn't as perfect as a POTS line, but has voice quality as good as any VOIP provider (better than most) and has in my experience about 95% to 99% uptime.

I don't use it as my primary line. My primary line will always be a POTS line, but magicjack has allowed to drop my second POTS line and add the convenience of a 3rd line (also magicjack).

$40 for a year including unlimited long distance is a great deal even if you have to run your computer to run the phone. It appears ATA support, etc is planned for the near future, but its a great deal even if ATA support never comes.

What!

Not true.

Skype can also call any phone number as well.

Actually, with Skype Pro, for $3.00 a month, you can call any phone in the U.S. or Canada from the U.S. or Canada and you can cancel at anytime.

You can use Skype services remotely to call people on Skype or MySpaceIM and check your voice mail for FREE, from any phone, landline, cell, or any device like a blackberry that has dial-tone and use Skype rates, when needed to make local, long distance and International calls from those phones and devices as well.

If you want/need to have a telephone number that others can call you on from their POTS lines, you can do that as well for $12.00 for 3 months or $24.00 a Year as well. Some people may just want the unlimited calling feature only for $3.00 a month so this is optional.

A key difference is that skype is peer to peer. Using it you make your computer part of the chain that others may well use for calls to get to their destination, with whatever risks that may occur, as well as using your system's resources. Magic jack is voip. It uses sip; it isn't peer to peer. Magic jack also doesn't install anything on your computer either. You can take the little thing and use it on any other computer. The front end cost is higher but overall it might well be cheaper than skype, and it certainly is safer and others won't be using your system as a transit point.

Magic Jack = Magic Words ("First Year") How many more years?

Also, as I said before, which can be of some importance to others, Skype is Portable, you can use it from other phones, even landlines. No computer, WiFi, Special Cell Phone needed. That can/could be worth something to others.

Can you use Magic Jack to talk for free to people in countries all over the world, and even from your other phones, and at no cost? Can you Chat with Magic Jack? Can you host Conference calls with 24 other PSTN calls you made at no cost?

Skype Pro offers $12.00 in Skype Out Credit with a 1 year purchase, so, you could use these credits to purchase a SkypeIn number, so the total cost for you for unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada, and a Telephone number with Voice mail, FREE conference calling with as many as 24 people at a time on PSTN lines.

$24.00 U.S. - $36.00 - $12.00 U.S. Free Credit = $24.00 U.S.
$24.00 U.S. - SkypeIn ("PSTN telephone number")
------

$48.00 U.S.

Again, NOT everyone needs/wants another telephone number, so if you just wanted unlimited calling for 1 year in the U.S. and Canada that is $36.00 U.S. and you would get $12.00 worth of Skype Out Credit that can be used for International calls. Some might call that $24.00 a year.

I, like most people, have no need for international calling at all. However, magicjack can call internationally for free to any other magicjack user, just like skype calls internationally for free to any other skype user.

If you use a pots line phone to make a phone call you are using the pots line phone not skype. I'm afraid I don't understand your comment that you can make a skype call on a pots line phone, unless you are just talking about calling a skype number of some kind?

If skype is what somebody wants. Great for them use skype. I want a phone line that works like a pots line and I want it super cheap. As far as I can tell magicjack meets this need in a more direct and simple fashion than skype. When I'm working and need my extra magicjack line my computer is on so magicjack works great and travels with me and my laptop wherever I am.

Gary
My Pots line comment is about MyToGo for Skype a free program I wrote that allows POTS line access to Skype and MySPaceIM users as well as using Skype rates from POTS lines. So you can call users on both Skype and MySpaceIM by their Skype or MySpaceIM name, by using Speed-Dial numbers, or PSTN numbers as well, if maybe Skype rates would be better for a call from your phone than the default rate for the same call.

So your comment of "If you use a pots line phone to make a phone call you are using the pots line phone not skype." is not true for Skype users.

Your needs, like this comment of "If you need to conference call with 24 other individuals, you shouldn't be using skype or magicjack" are not why I posted my response. I did so because It is NOT fair to the others not to know what is available especially when false information is given about Skype.

I am in many meetings during a given week, with fortune 500 companies using Skype conferences, and also with NORMAL people hosting the same, as well. So your needs are not the worlds needs nor are mine.

I agree, that both Skype and Magic Jack have benefits some users may value over others, however, I also feel very strongly that the FACTS should be presented, so that those same people can make a choice based not on rumor but on current factual information.

Re: My review of MagicJack

For a pots line user to call a magicjack number they have to pick up their phone and dial the 10 digit number just like any other call.

For a pots line user to call a skype number they can't, unless they or the skype number they are trying to call are somehow using some program you've written and program in speed dial codes of some kind.

This doesn't exactly bear out your earlier claim that strongly implied a skype phone number can be called by a pots line user just like any other regular telephone number.

So one of the facts that needs to be out there is that one of the differences between a magicjack number and a skype number is that the magicjack works just like a regular pots phone number and skype doesn't.

If one wants transparency and familiar sameness of a pots line phone for their customers who may call them then a solution like magicjack or for a lot more money vonage, et al is a far better and more complete solution to skype. Those are the facts, imho.

My GOD, please.......

A POTS number is a POTS number, so I am not sure what you are getting at.

Maybe you also need to study how VoIP comes up out of the ground to meet copper, because you seem very confused on how that happens with Skype?

It really is OT now, way past you just being confused. Please at least try and read up on Skype services, options, 3rd party applications before you continue to make uninformed statements about things you have NOT taken the time to do research on.

Your Quotes of:

"This doesn't exactly bear out your earlier claim that strongly implied a skype phone number can be called by a pots line user just like any other regular telephone number."

"For a pots line user to call a skype number they can't, unless they or the skype number they are trying to call are somehow using some program you've written and program in speed dial codes of some kind."

Again are dead wrong, please do some reading about how it is done with Skype, it's called, SkypeIn.

My Program only allows you to use Skype calling services remotely from other phones and devices. It is not required for SkypeIn.

The ONLY reason WHY I even respond to your incorrect posts about Skype is so that I can help people have a chance to get the facts before they drink your Kool-Aid :p

If you want to accurately talk about Skype and the services it offers, at least take the time to read about them, before you make this stuff up as you go along. You are starting to look SILLY! lol

OK, so we are back to you have to subscribe to Skype Pro and Skype In and ? For more money than a magicjack costs, and then you have to get a headset and mic or buy a skype phone in order to duplicate what a magicjack and any old extra phone you have laying around can accomplish for less money.

And none of the above takes into account the differences in voice quality which from what I've read about skype and other services compared to magicjack is usually not nearly as good as magicjack.

As far as Headsets, Handsets are concerned I think that what really matters in a shared computer situation is availability, because as soon as you log off as the Windows User that started MagicJack, and a family member or guest or nobody logs on ("So I have Been Told"), you have no Phone access with Magicjack, with Skype you can make it a system service if needed, and if required also use an ATA so that your phone is available even when the computer is sitting at the Windows welcome screen, waiting for someone to log on, so, yes there maybe added costs to do this, but the availability is also there as well ("As long as the computer is running and NOT in sleep mode") also, you could have an IP phone with Skype and avoid the need for a computer all together, which cannot be said for MagicJack.

As I said before, There is NO requirement to have BOTH Skype Pro and Skype in, it depends on your needs, some people may just want unlimited outbound calling to the U.S. and Canada, if that was the case Skype would be cheaper than Magicjack, I listed the prices in my prior post as well.

Since Magicjack does not support an outbound unlimited calling only option, it is hard to say what their price would be for this service.

Please provide these "voice quality" differences, it is safe to say, that PSTN to VoIP and VoIP to PSTN since gateways are used and you are at the mercy of the PSTN gateways and the CODECS they use, are about the same for most VoIP services, however Skype to Skype calls are for sure a much higher quality because of the Wideband CODECS used in these cases, and they are pure P2P calls in this case, with no gateways used in virtually all cases.

Can you use Grandstream ATA with Skype? Also I thought Magic Jack is always unlimited outgoing for US and Canada.

There are some SIP2Skype gateways software packages run on a Windows platform and if you configure your Grandstream ATA to one of these gateways, it should work. OTOH, if you find a GS firmware for your ATA that supports Skype, then this should also work. :D

I don't think you can use Grandstream ATA with Skype and yes Magic Jack is always unlimited outgoing for US and Canada, but it includes a PSTN telephone number, so what I meant is you can't get a cheaper price if maybe you don't want that, so you pay the $40.00 U.S. with Magic Jack, where with Skype, if you just want outgoing and don't need a telephone number it is $36.00 U.S.

And a way to add a skype name into the address book, click on the 'call' button, and have your pstn phone ring and have the skype utility on the other end ring.

It must be chickenfeed for an outfit like that to rig up the necessary gateway.

Heck, why doesn't sipbroker or fwd do it?

Re: My review of MagicJack

Magicjack can be run as a service and have the phone usable before anyone logs in and have it available for any user that is currently logged in, just as you describe for Skype. You just have to configure it to run that way, if that is what you desire. This does nothing to take away from the point that with skype you still need to buy a headset and mic or a skype phone while with magicjack you can use any extra old phone you have laying around.

If someone doesn't value their business enough to use a better phone system than magicjack or skype to make 24 party important conference calls, then that's up to them. They know better than I what their businesses are really worth.

As for voice quality and gateways and VOIP voice quality they aren't all pretty much the same. Just asks users of the various VOIP phone services or read the comments here on DSL reports about how when a user changes from one service to another they notice much better or worse voip voice quality. Another advantage for magicjack in this whole gateway matter, is that unlike skype and most other voip providers magicjack OWNS its own nationwide network of local phone companies (CLECs) and therefore the gateways used are often magicjack gateways.

I'm sorry, but imho for price, quality, features, and ease of use magicjack is far superior to skype. If you or someone else prefers skype that's fine with me. If skype ever did become a better deal with a nationwide network of its on CLECs, I'd happily switch to it myself. Right now it just isn't.

Thanks,

Gary

Re: My review of MagicJack

Where are the instructions to set Magicjack to run as a system service? Link please?

Great it takes hardware to run Magicjack as well, plus you can only call others who have "Purchased" that MagicJack hardware for FREE in other countries besides the U.S. and Canada.

Also how about those folks that want to talk with you that do live in the U.S. and Canada but really are short on minutes this month yet they are sitting in front of their computer and not near a landline.

Kind of limits who you can call outside of the U.S. and Canada for FREE does it not, lol, so much for FREE international calling vs being able to call someone on Skype anywhere in the world when there is no need to "Purchase" anything to have a conversation for free. Download, and you are ready to talk.

What do you suggest when someone wants to talk to someone else who is in another country besides the U.S. and Canada do who has Magicjack in the U.S. or Canada.

1. Send the person who is located outside the U.S. or Canada an email, asking them to purchase Magicjack for $39.95 U.S. and to send you a email back when they receive their Magicjack in 3-7 business days, so you now can talk for "Free"?

2. Buy them a Magicjack so you can talk for FREE, tell them to Call you in 3-7 business days when they receive their Magicjack gift from you?

3. Ask them to download and install Skype, tell them to call your Skype name in a few minutes?

4. Get a part-time job, so you can save money to buy all your friends ("Even the ones you can't meet yet becuase they don't have a Magicjack, because they are waiting on you to buy one for them :( ") and family who are located in countries besides the U.S. and Canada Magicjacks.

Wait a minute you may need more than one part-time job for this, remember they will all need to pay next year for Magicjack services as well.

Your International calls are "Free" concept depends on everyone else that you want to talk to for "FREE" outside the U.S. and Canada spending $39.95 U.S to do so the first year and additional monies every year after for Magicjack and Magicjack services.

I could have a D-Link DPH-50U ATA device for Skype and not cause my friends and family to drop $39.95 to talk with me outside of the U.S. for half that and save all my friends and family $39.95 who live outside of the U.S. and Canada that want to talk with me for "Free" from their perspective.

Don't tell me, Smart people have no friends or family outside the U.S. and Canada?

Once Again, your values are not everyone's. Conference calling many people ("More than 3 which also includes Skype names, meaning people in other countries as well as part of the maximum of 24 conference participants") could/can be a feature others may think is important, much like being able to contact others from your other phones as well, which again, Magicjack cannot do as well.

Again, please read what I said, I said, VoIP providers use gateways and these gateways can/do cause quality to be impacted in many cases, depending on who the gateway providers are as well as poor application and design and coding, not enough CPU or memory can also cause problems as well for VoIP providers front end client programs, there is no scientific evidence that Skype is any worse than any other VoIP provider. If there is please provide links as well. Since Skype can do p2p calls, they can avoid these issues when not using the PSTN gateway services which Magicjack can't do.

ZOverLord, I love Skype for all of the reasons that you have expressed plus many more. However,...........

Skype's revenue model is essentially that of a "minute stealer" and unfortunately MagicJack is now a more efficient minute stealer. I still keep some SkypeOut credits for international calls, PamFax etc., however I will not purchase SkypePro or a SkypeIn number due to the fact that I now have a MagicJack. MagicJack is far more useful as a minute stealer when connected to a set of cordless phones.

In addition, the MagicJack is going to be a hot seller at retail due to the fact that it is tangible, simple and intuitively easy for anyone to understand. It has great "impulse buy" potential.

The technology is simple and Skype should copy it and introduce a SkypeJack at the same price point with the same features, if not MagicJack will out minute steal Skype.

P.S. The one thing that I am going to miss is sitting at my computer and simply clicking on a number on screen so as to place a call via Skype.....I really love that feature.

In response to people who feel that they must use a headset with Skype....they are simply wrong. Since Skype's earliest days I have always used a mic and speakers and have never experienced a feedback problem which could not be fixed with a simple sound adjustment. The current version of Skype eliminates all feedback automatically and I use use a mic which is placed 8 inches from my right speaker. Of course I use what I consider to be the best mic in the world, the Micflex,

Skype may also be used, with zero feedback, on a laptop with a built in or external mic.

I do agree that it is a good deal, but I think that there are also many things that it is missing that Skype Offers as well. That's really my only point is to compare what they both offer. With Facts not fiction.

Things Magicjack does not offer when compared to Skype:

1. Chat. While this at first glance may not seem important it does help with leaving messages as well as file transfers, and creating multiple party chats as well, for common interest as well as individual chats.

2. Conference calls with more than 3 people and even then MagicJack conference calls cannot include people in other countries for free, Skype can mix Skype calls and PSTN calls for a Max Participants of 24 + you the host making it 25 people, also chat can come in handy with this feature, because you can do file transfer, and there are shared desktops for meetings that are 3rd party applications as well.

3. Skype Voice mail allows you to leave voice mail to another Skype user, even when that Skype user does not have Skype voice mail. This is included in the Annual cost of Skype Pro of $36.00 U.S. that also gives you $12.00 in Skype Out credit that can be used for anything, including International calls, as well as toward the purchase of a SkypeIn number.

4. Public Chats, this feature allows you to Host a chat, have moderators, define rules of who can post. Normally, people need to be invited by someone already in a Skype chat, using a Public Chat for Skype one can place links in Email and web pages for others to join.

5. Skypecasts. This is like a radio show, you publish what time you will be talking about this or that, Skype publishes this so that people worldwide can join, ask questions and you can moderate this as well. Skypecast are giant conferences that are worldwide, if you subject peaks interest, people will come, and you can create a following, kind of like poscasting but people can talk back. Of course you control who speaks and when.

6. Of course Free Calling worldwide, in the true sense of FREE.

7. Using Skype services remotely, there are phones and programs like mine, some programs are free, others are at a cost, but these are here for Skype, this also includes IP phones that do not require computers.

This remote access can allow you to CALL someone by their Skype Name or MySpaceIM name, for no charge, anywhere in the world from your phones and devices, like a blackberry as an example. So Skype is portable, Magicjack requires you to be hardwired to a computer.

8. Separate services, this is important, because not all people need another telephone number and adding the overhead for everyone to always include a telephone number adds cost, as you can see, with plain unlimited outbound calling to the U.S. and Canada, Skype is cheaper $36.00 and you get $12.00 in credit to purchase other things or use for International calling.

Telephone numbers on Skype are $24.00 U.S. a year or $12.00 U.S. for 3 months, because you get $12.00 U.S. in credit for signing up for a years worth of unlimited calls to the U.S and Canada, you could just use that credit to purchase a telephone number, so that boils down to an extra $12.00 U.S. really for a telephone number for one year.

You can have as many as 10 telephone numbers assigned to 1 Skype name, they can be in different states or different countries, to save people money calling you so that their calls are local to them or not international.

9. Call Transfer, can be done, in real-time to multiple numbers or Skype names, first one to answer, gets the call.

10. Being logged on to Skype in mutiple places, you can be logged on in many places with your Skype name, your cell phone, mutiple computers, IP phones, and when calls come in first one to answer gets the call.

Even with a telephone number and with all these extra features Skype provides, Skype is about $8.00 U.S. more than Magicjack when you include a telephone number, AND you can get a number that is local to you, which currently seems to be an issue with Magicjack in some cases.

These are the major differences. I am sure someone can list what Magicjack has to offer vs Skype, at least then people can read these reviews and know what services are offered and make an informed decision based on real facts.

ZOverLord,

I agree with you and fully intend to continue to use Skype, I just won't be a profitable customer.

Skype to Skype is my preferred means of communications due to the excellent voice quality.

I want Skype to succeed and stay in business. If they had offered a SkypeJack with the same features and at the same price point as MagicJack there is absolutely no question in my mind that I would have purchased the SkypeJack over the MagicJack, if only to help support Skype.

When you stand back and think, it really is amazing that both Skype and MagicJack are so cheap in comparison to what we paid for service just a few years ago.

It also is amazing that the demand curve is still elastic at these low price points. I don't think it is the money so much as it is a new perception as to the proper cost of service in today's market. MagicJack has disrupted the original disrupter, Skype. I don't see how Vonage, Packet8, ViaTalk et al. can possibly hope to survive in this new environment.

I think that it will be a race to the bottom with Skype, MagicJack and soon Google's GTalk in the lead. I just hope that it does not turn into a Pyrrhic victory for the winner.

Re: My review of MagicJack

What's the procedure for running skype as a service or is that the default configuration for skype?

If you want a phone get a magicjack.

If you want computer to computer skype to skype international calling get skype.

If you live in the USA get a magicjack.

If you live in Canada get a magicjack.

If your sister lives in Bangladesh either send her a magicjack or if the only persons she wants to call in the USA has skype tell her to get skype.

As someone noted voip providers that lease their network lines and gateways from phone companies can go out of business (i.e. Sunrocket, et al). One of the great things for both voice quality and the profit model and stability of magicjack is that magicjack has its own nationwide network of local phone company exchanges (i.e. their own nationwide network of CLECs [Competitive Local Exchange Carriers) all up and properly licensed in the various states. Therefore, when someone not on a magicjack phone calls a magicjack number magicjack gets paid a fee by the phone company that the caller uses (and vice versa). This both adds a layer of revenue that other voip providers do not have and never will have, and it helps guarantee the viability of magicjack at its low prices.

I agree with the poster that stated skype should come out with a skypejack and at a similar price point to the magicjack if they want to compete effectively with magicjack. Since skype doesn't own a network of local phone companies (unlike magicjack), they may not be able to afford to do this.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Here is how you can run magicjack as a service. Its the same procedure as one would use to run any executable as a service. You set it up using a couple of tools found in the XP Support Tools package.

Here are the detailed instructions from a post on the original official MagicJack forum:

Ok! Got everything to work now. Thank you to everyone who has collaborated on this project. Now magicjack runs as a service, is completely invisible, starts up automatically on boot, and I don't need fast-user switching enabled, thus it takes up no memory caused by virtual desktop programs or autosizer, and has 0 focus problems. Here is my current step by step to get this setup ->

1. Download rktools.exe from here -> www dot microsoft dot com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en

2. Extract it.

3. Create a user account named "magicjack", temporarily assign admin privilege. Also create a password for this account.

4. Login as “magicjack”, and install the magicjack under this profile.

5. Install the magicjack as a service, using the tutorial here ->

support dot microsoft dot com/kb/137890

After you create the service, if you export the registry value from regedt32.exe, it should look similar to this ->

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\magicJack]
"Type"=dword:00000010
"Start"=dword:00000002

Notes: Now, when I did this the magicjack service still wouldn't start, so I went to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services->MagicJack and tried to start the service from there, but I got this error ->

So, I went to the log on tab (still in the magic jack service tab) and put in the password, and everything works beautifully!

Re: My review of MagicJack

How to make Skype a System service, in this example it uses a Dlink DPH-50U which can be purchased for about $19.95 these days from places like newegg after rebate. They also can be found in stock in some Radio Shacks, Staples, Best Buy ("they usually are more expensive at Best Buy").

Spec »www.dlink.com/products/?pid=466

Interesting note, this device supports the ability to answer both your PSTN line, Skype calls, make PSTN calls, Make Skype calls, call your PSTN line, then make a Skype call, call your Skype name, then make a PSTN call, does call forwarding, call recording. Acts as an asnwering machine for your PSTN line and Skype calls as well, provides call forwarding. From any of your current phones, can drive as many as 5 phones.

All configurable, kind of a Super Magicjack :p

As you can see, Magicjack is NOT a new idea, it's just smaller, because it has less features than the Dlink DPH-50U and similar devices.

Complete instructions here to make the DPH-50U and a copy of Skype a system service:

»forum.skype.com/viewtopic.php?p=···0#258520

I wrote the above instructions, and run two of these adapters on two of my 5 computers, and have for more than two years with no problems. One is a 600 Mhz system, XP, SP2, with 256 Meg ram, runs fine even while making Skype calls, and doing other things on the system as well. Including even while the current Windows user is also making a call.

It should be noted that this also allows the current Windows user ("If Any") to be running their own copy of Skype, logged onto their Skype name, so that they can be making calls as well at the same time a call is in progress on the DPH-50U the current windows user could/can be using a headset and making/receiving PSTN calls or Skype to Skype or Skype to MySpaceIM calls. Great for families, where you want one phones always available 24/7/365 with a shared computer so that you never miss inbound calls, or can't make outbound calls, while allowing the current Windows users to do the same using their Skype name as well.

Skype Remote Usage Example: Instructions for MyToGo for Skype, works with any devices like Blackberry, Cell Phones, Landlines, and is free.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Interesting device, but you still have to pay for a phone line plus pay for skype pro, skype in, the ATA/USB/RJ11 D-Link adapter, and a headset mic/skype phone to get all the features of a magicjack. Total cost about $150.00 to $200.00 upfront plus continuing monthly cost of the POTS telephone line at about $35 to $70 per month. Compared to magicjack at $39.99 for the entire first year and $19.99 for susbsequent years. Not such a great deal.

Then there is the whole problem that you are using skype and multiple phone numbers, no CLEC network behind the skype service like with MagicJack, and a clunky kind of setup. I just want one phone number to give out to people. I don't want a business card with so many numbers and SIP addresses on it that it wraps around to the back of the card.

I just want a phone for people to call me on and for me to call them on. I don't want to take them or myself on a tech junket through VOIP land in order to call me. Just a phone and a single 10 digit phone number to give out.

Re: My review of MagicJack

The PSTN line is optional, the jack is there on the device in case you have a PSTN line, so that you can use your phones for both Skype and PSTN calls, get it?

Again, I listed the prices, do the math.

Without the telephone number and just unlimited calling for 1 year in the U.S and Canada the Skype solutionj is about $3.00 U.S. less than Magicjack and that still gives you $12.00 U.S. credit for International calls, or to buy a telephone number for $24.00 U.S. which would be $12.00 U.S. when using the credit given from purchasing the Unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada for 1 year.

So if you use that credit ("As I said here many times already") that's $12.00 U.S. for a telephone number for 1 year, and unlike MagicJack in some cases, with a number in your local area. Now, with a telephone number combined with unlimited callinf, then Skype is about $8.00 U.S. more expensive than Magic Jack for a year, but as I stated before there are many more benefits you get with Skype that Magicjack does not support or offer.

Now, where do you get $150.00 - $200 LOL

SKYPE

$36.00 U.S. - Unlimited Calling U.S. and Canada 1 Year
$12.00 U.S. - LOCAL telephone number 1 Year $12.00 credit
------
$48.00 U.S. Unlimited calling and LOCAL telephone number

$20.00 U.S. DPH-50U

$68.00 U.S. Total Worse Case, you may not want/need some of these options. Pick what you want. You could use the MyToGo solution for free as well if you did not need a ATA to Phone device like the DPH-50U.

WHAT! no CLEC network, what in the world are you talking about, multiple numbers, Please I beg you again READ about SkypeIn for Skype STOP making this stuff up, Geeze!

I have laid prices out for your 3 different times, right here, and you can't even get that right and your prices even get higher every time you post, lol.

Face the facts Gary, Magicjack is a very expensive PSTN Phone, because it is NOT portable, that's all it can do is call other telephone numbers, it can't do chat or anything else really.

There is no FREE calling, without the other party in another country having a Magicjack.

Your ("Singular") solution, Gary, is a $400-$1,200 count the computer that is required to interface with Magicjack, in ALL cases. It has NO portability of any kind, cannot be in two different places at the same time, or using two different types of devices, or even 2 computers at the same time, because that would require 2 Magicjacks.

At least Skype allows you to be logged on to many computers at the same time, and anywhere in the world, as the same Skype ID. it has IP phones, many Cell Phones can use Skype, blackberry type devices can use Skype, even while computers are logged on that same Skype Id.

Skype has remote options, it has addtional services, like chat, like 24+ free conferencing, worldwide free calling, Public chats, Skypecasts.

Your solution is a very very isolated, computer only tehered, non portable and expensive hard-wired POTS/PSTN only solution.

NOT drinking your Kool-Aid Gary.

Re: My review of MagicJack

You say $68.00 compared to $39.99 and then 19.99 for the magicjack, but your $68.00 is based on buying some of the equipment in used condition and doesn't include the cost of a headset/mic or skype phone.

Both skype and magicjack require computers to be used and on in order to make and receive calls on an unrestricted basis. Your attempts at confusing this issue aren't persuasive.

I've already stated if your sister lives in Bangladesh you may want to consider skype or buy her a magicjack and mail it to her.

If you live in the USA or Canada and want a PHONE not an internet chat service but a PHONE then magicjack is definitely the way to go over skype.

If I want to do chat or IM, I'll use any one of several possible IM chat clients. They handle all the chat, video chat, and video conferencing you want. They handle it for free and don't lock me in to an inferior PHONE solution.

You keep downplaying the CLEC advantage of magicjack. I suspect that just like with your attempts to claim that skype runs as a service and magicjack doesn't that you know the importance of having an in-house nationwide network of local phone exchanges supporting magicjack versus leased from outside parties model that skype and other voip providers use (can you say Sunrocket run out of business because the phone companies raised their line access rental fees). The CLEC advantage is also in voice quality.

If I want an IM client I'll get an IM client. If I want a phone. I want a phone not an IM Client.

I beginning to believe you make money off of helping companies set up skype phone systems and service and maintenance support after that, and its this vested interest that has you writing skype programs and trying to undercut what magicjack offers over skype.

Magicjack is wired to a computer just like skype (if you want all the services). Magicjack is portable and can be taken and used with any XP or Vista based computer. Mac support is now in beta. Linux should follow shortly after that.

BTW, you keep incorrectly stating magicjack is PSTN, and for someone who initially claimed they just wanted the truth/facts out its a bit confusing that you would so often repeat this bit of misinformation.

Magicjack is standard SIP based VOIP. It may appear to be PSTN because of its seamless integration with PSTN services so that unlimited calling out and calling in to/from any device or computer than can call a simple 10 digit phone number is so much better than what skype has to offer.

I'll admit it. Magicjack gives you a PHONE. If you want IM chat and you don't want to use any of the many other free and superior IM Chat solutions out there then get skype or skypepro or skypeIM or whatever option it is you have to pay extra for to get that service.

Magicjack comes with all available services in one device + software for one single price of $19.99 for the unlimited phone service per year and $19.99 once in the first year for the magicjack ATA to USB adapter and software.

Not true Gary, but I don't slam Magicjack saying it is this or that or make things up about services I don't know anything about. So, I am defending Skype because you are not telling the TRUTH about it, in fact, if you made factual statements about it, you would hear very little from me. You started slamming Skype saying things that were and are NOT true. I even stated that in my prior posts, that was the reason I responded, and is the reason why I respond when you keep making this stuff up.

I am sure you or others would do the same if I started saying things that were NOT true about Magicjack. Many people read these posts, the more accurate the facts are the better it is for everyone who maybe thinking about changing or getting new VoIP services. Nothing bad about defending the truth.

DSLREPORTS has always been known to put the facts on the table, many people come here to watch us argue, to get those facts :p It is a very respected place to gain insight.

You Say:

Not true Gary. I can use cell phones, and blackberry like devices and never need a computer with Skype, PLEASE stop making this stuff up about Skype, and read about it, please. Use any search engine and you can see that almost any cell phone and/or blackberry device can use Skype and without a computer as well. There are even IP phones for Skype that do not require a computer as well.

There is NO requirement to purchase any ATA device to use Skype, that is optional.

You say:

"If you live in the USA or Canada and want a PHONE not an internet chat service but a PHONE then magicjack is definitely the way to go over skype."

Gary, read up on Skype, please.....SkypeIn is a PSTN phone number just as much as Magicjack is, that's not magical about Magicjack ;)

Gary, my definition of portable means usable from your pocket, how big are your pockets Gary?

Gary, I will say this one last time "Skype does NOT require a computer to use"

Did, you see that Gary?

Hate to break the bad news to you Gary but....You say...

"It may appear to be PSTN"

Gary, if other PSTN phones/devices can call your telephone number and you answer that call on Magicjack or any other service, it is called a PSTN call, by any standards, including SIP, or any other form of VoIP, or Telephony.

I am thinking of getting something for a relative who needs computer-related things to be kept simple. Getting a dph-50u and a skypeout account for her might be better than magicjack, given the problems mj is having and the fact that skype has a good track record of reliability.

For example, here is one man's tests:

»unofficialmagicjack.forum2u.org/···247.html

When I call out using my ATA, I almost never have a problem, so it may be something in magicjack's software.

I never had a problem with skype either, when I used it with a headset and mike to make skype-skype calls.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Is skype a CLEC. No it isn't. Neither does skype own its own nationwide network of CLECs. In order to be a CLEC one must: have their own telephone switch(s), satisfy state regulations, pay significant filing fees, get a license approved from the state, and also make its services available to outside customers. Once one is a licensed CLEC then various rights and responsibilities accrue to the organization vis a vis other phone companies. A CLEC can't be shut out of the phone network via loss of contracts or price increases from other phone companies like Sunrocket for example.

So no SKYPE is not a CLEC.

If I have my blackberry or cell phone with me I don't need skype or my magicjack. If you want to argue skype is better for some guy with such a lousy cell phone service that they need to make skype calls from their cell phone, then hey you can have that niche.

If you want a phone get a magicjack.

If you want a trick pony for a lot more money get skype.

Magicjack service has been excellent for me with POTS line voice quality about 90 to 95 percent of the time.

I'm not buying your spiel about just wanting to get the facts out, when you continuously make misleading statements about magicjack (like it can't be run as a service while bragging about skype's ability to run as a service yet to run skype as a service you need extra equipment and a POTS phone line while magicjack can run as a service without any extra hardware and using the same software techniques as can be used to run any software as a service).

With 50,000 magicjack beta users there are going to be a few people who had problems. They are the ones who post messages. People without problems don't go to the boards to post, in general. I'm sure there are just as many people with skype problems. Probably more.

If you want a phone get a magicjack.

If you want IM chat that you pay for get skype.

Pretty simple to me.

Well, at least Gary, people get to see the facts now, that was the entire point. So, you can continue to lie about what Skype is, or can't do, how much this or that Skype service costs. Maybe someday you will take the time to learn what Skype is or can do before you make stuff up.

People now at least see the facts, not fiction, your slams and quotes of Skype Prices, call quality, Skypes inability to be used without computers, all this time, have had no supported links, that support your claims as true.

Good luck with Magicjack, it's a good deal NOW, and NO I won't buy your Magicjack on eBay next year, if they go BK.

Yes I will help you then if you ask how to set up the Dlink DPH-50U to use on your computer with Skype and that will help you get outside, away from your computer, more often by knowing you can make and receive Skype calls without a USB connection. From Cell phones and other devices, while standing under the sun :D Without a WiFi connection and a laptop.

Will even help you set up MyToGo for Skype so you can get some sun next summer and talk to other people in other countries and make some new international friends, without burning holes in your pockets.

They do have USB extender cables you know that could at least get to reach ("Maybe 2 or 3 of them connected together") out the window to a lawn chair this summer to that Magicjack connector connected to your computer inside the house, and Laptop batteries are falling quickly to less than $200.00 U.S. So, there is hope.

Happy New Year, and I hope you can get a local number soon with Magicjack.

Sad Gary, you are giving up the sun, or the ability to answer the phone and make calls, over a losy 8 bucks a year Gary, you are giving up the ability to make calls and answer the phone outside, without a laptop and a WiFi connection, for less than 67 cents a month.

Re: My review of MagicJack

.
Since skype has no captive nationwide CLEC network that guarantees access to the phone system (i.e. like Sunrocket) it is far more likely that skype will go out of business before Magicjack. Perhaps skype will be saved by its use of all the connected skype computers to create a usenet like network for phone service (and we all know how well usenet ended up doing in the long run).

Yes I'm giving up using joe and bill's and ken's computers to make my phone calls. I want a phone not a hodge podge of connected skype user computers to rely upon when making my calls.

Skype is more expensive now and will only get even more expensive because magicjack price drops in half in subsequent years, and its just a matter of time before the phone companies start putting the squeeze on skype for more and more fees and poof another Sunrocket. Won't happen to magicjack because they are their own phone company.

With magicjack I use a real phone. It can be a wireless phone with no cables whatsoever. With skype you have to worry about the length of your headset and mic cords, need three hands for carrying them around or buy an expensive skype phone, but even that requires a usb connection to your computer. For $30 you can buy a skype ata to usb connector but then that almost doubles the cost of skype for the first year, and that's not even counting the cost of buying the headset and mic/or skype phone for another $20 to $80 depending on what you want to tether to your computer.

Maybe magicjack will buy skype if they can figure out how to make it profitable. They couldn't figure out how to make a sunrocket acquistion profitable so they weren't able to rescue sunrocket. At least magicjack is cheap enough that the sunrocket people were able to change to a viable business model for not too much money.

Maybe skype users will change to a viable business model when skype goes belly up because they have no guaranteed access to the phone system (unlike magicjack).

Gary,

You say: "is far more likely that Skype will go out of business before Magicjack."

I know that eBay just wrote down the value of Skype, but do you know what the current value of Skype is and how long it has been around when compared to Magicjack?

By the way, who filled your head with all this wrong information about Skype? I am curious. I have asked for links many times when you make these false statements, and you never provide them, does that mean you make all this stuff up on your own?

Anyway, the truth is out there about Skype, you can find it with the help of medication or reading, but it is there.

P.S. Gary, please call your "real" phone company, this guy has a MagicJack, lives in Indiana, and can't get a number closer than...well read:

"I have a Magicjack and it works as good as the regular telephone service. The only downside for me is the fact that there are no numbers for my city and state. I live in Indiana but I have a Atlanta , Ga number assigned to my phone.

I can make outgoing calls but incoming would be long distance for the caller."

From : »Re: Anyone Use MagicJack?

Gary, should I tell them they need to move, that normal people only live in Atlanta, and all the other cities are not "real" cities? or tell them that's because GA is a CLEC state?

GrandCentral is a great service. I use it myself so the number I give out can ring my home, my magicjack line, and/or my cell phone as I wish.

Is skype owned by ebay? Will ebay put it up for sale on ebay you think?

Why did ebay write down skype's value since according to you its cheap and offers everything including the kitchen sink?

Magicjack's value will continue to rise because magicjack is its own phone company and has guaranteed access to the phone networks, unlike skype and sunrocket.

I don't know what will become of skype or magicjack, but it's certain (isn't it?) that in a few years a not insignificant percentage of calls that now go through a clec and a central office will go through the internet, and the percentage will rise quickly, so that in, say, 10 years, all of the phone traffic in most cities will be over the internet.

All those copper wires, if they are still around, will be carrying data, some of which may be a telephone signal, but it will be a voip telephone signal.

I don't know what it takes, but if I were running the skype project, I would try to make skype compatible with sip, and then do everything I could to get people to buy a skypejack so as to encourage them to call skypejack to skypejack, whether that meant calling another skype user or calling a sip user.

Well I am currently using Skype, Magicjack and Onesuite.

Skype, I use it primarily when dealing with someone who has Skype too, both in chat or pc to pc calls. But for the most of the time I use Yahoo for chatting and it has great PC to PC call quality too!

Magicjack, I use it in tandem with Onesuite just like other people here in DSL reports. Actually I got the idea here. Magicjack has been great except for the hiccup a couple of months back.

Onesuite, used it before when they're just a long distance phone card service, now I also use it for voip. No major problem yet.

It appears bananna007 is the only one to get that email, because there is no mention of it on the most active magicjack forum. Maybe someone is playing a tick on him or maybe he is just playing a trick on us.

I got an email from skype that says skype will close in 2 years after raising its prices next year to $99.99 per year for the basic skype service. »i.dslr.net/v2/lite/grey/wink.gif

ZOverLord, do you think that a MagicJack could be reprogrammed to use Skype?
I am sure it could be, but there as so many USB devices that already have and do have much more functionality, multiple jacks and other features, it would be taking a step backwards.

Skype allows both their hardware and software partners to use their imaginations and creative energies to constantly create new devices and 3rd party applications, unlike other companies that offer similar services.

Why would Skype want to remove that diversity. I grew up in the days when the only phone you could buy/rent were the ones provided by the telephone company. Needles to say, there were few choice and no innovative selections.

I am sure if there is a market for anything, a Skype hardware or software partner will fill that void.

If you read up on just the DLink DPH-50, it is portable and USB powered as well:

You would see the advantages over the "Borisov's Gizmo". There are many more Skype compatible devices, and I use this one only so you can see just one example of how advanced the features and options are and have been for Skype compatible devices, on how even just this one far exceeds the limited functionality of the current "Magicjack". This device has been around for some time as well.

Software and cell phones as well complement these other options, so that Skype users have the ability to pick and choose from many different 3rd Party Applications, ATA devices, IP Phones, cell phone and other devices that Skype users may already own, like blackberries and similar devices.

Also, there is something that Skype knows and does well, it knows how to separate services.

Not everyone wants a phone number, not everyone needs voice mail. You can turn away customers over time by saying, here use this device or nothing at all, or pay this higher price because everyone gets a telephone number.

Personally, I think, it is better to have many devices, made by many different companies, and offer unbundled services so your customers can pick and choose what they want without higher cost for things some people may not want or need.

Remote Access - When you are given one device, and can't use other devices or methods to access you services remotely, without some type of computer and/or internet connection that is hard-wired or WiFi you limit the portability of those services, because you create a "Walled Garden" so suddenly what was a "MagicJack" now is a "Magic Boat Anchor" because you need a computer and a internet connection always attached to that "Amazing Device".

Not everyone wants the same house, painted the same color, on the same lot with the same car.

Options create customers. Diversity increases profits.

Each Year there are always new 3rd party software applications and hardware for Skype, this year I think you will be amazed at some of the new products that you will see in 2008 for Skype compatible hardware and software.

Zoverlord, your last post is a great commercial for magicjack even though you didn't intend it that way.

If you want a phone with great voice quality that uses industry standard SIP protocol and is as simple and easy to use as a phone with free long distance and unlimited calling get a magicjack and plug it into your computer and plug any old phone into it and bingo you have phone service.

If you want a non-standard non-SIP solution that requires you to build a phone or build a phone system from parts get skype.

Skype and its aficionados need to realize all its options aren't a feature without an industry standard simple solution.

Non-techies want a phone not a technical manual on how to put one together.

Gary don't you mean?

" »www.magicjack.com/site/tos.html try and find this from the main page.

I Quote:

"The goods and services offered by magicJack provide a multimedia experience which includes a voice over Internet information service feature. It is not a telecommunications service and is subject to different regulatory treatment from telecommunications services."

So I lied about that too! It's a multimedia experience ("More for Ads, but if I told you that or you could see this TOS before you sent your Money, or gave your email address, well...") which includes a voice over Internet information service feature. It is not a telecommunications service and is subject to different regulatory treatment from telecommunications services.

If you want to be forced to use a single device and always require a computer, along with some kind of Internet connection, then our service is for you.......

Unlike other providers, we produce our OWN hardware, I mean our own devices, I mean our own device. In fact, just trying to use another device or 3rd party application, is a violation of our terms of service:

I Quote:

"You agree not to access the magicJack services by any means other than through the Software and the magicJack device"

Hahahahaha, Sucker! Talk about Killing BYO-Anything. We Hate Open systems, thats why using ANY 3rd party application is a violation as well.

I Quote:

"11. Advertisements
You also understand and agree that use of the magicJack device and Software will include advertisements and that these advertisements are necessary for the magicJack device to work and for the service to be free in the first year of the agreement (and subsequent licenses to be at minimal cost). Advertisements will be served through the magicPage™ Software. magicPage™ Software attempts to serve local advertisements and classifieds using a completely automated process that enables us to effectively target dynamically changing contentBG. Our computers may analyze the phone numbers you call in order to improve the relevance of the ads. We do not provide any personal information to our advertisers or third parties. magicJack has a policy of restricting advertisers that it believes are inappropriate, but it does not guarantee the accuracy or integrity of any advertisers and does not endorse any of the advertisements that may appear in connection with use of the magicJack device. You also understand and agree that use of the magicJack device and Software may include certain communications, such as service announcements, administrative messages and newsletters, and you will not be able to opt out of receiving them."

We own your computer!

I Quote:

"4. What Is Free and What is Not:
The magicJack device allows you to receive for free incoming calls using the phone number we assign to you. If you register for magicJack outgoing service ('magicOut"), the magicJack device allows you to make free outgoing calls to other magicJack device users located anywhere in the world, and the subscribers on traditional telephone networks or cellular networks in the United States. We may provide for a fee, premium prepaid services, powered by YMAX Communications Corp. ("YMAX"), including International Calling and Conferencing services and the rates for those services will be governed by YMAX's effective price lists or tariffs and are not governed by this Agreement. magicJack may make available to you, for an additional fee, enhanced versions of the magicJack Software ("Upgraded Software") which provide new features and functions."

So, free "Calling" Outbound to ANY phone is NOT included in the agreement in the U.S and Canada for ANY length of time? Always read before you buy! This is what is said:

I Quote:

"and the subscribers on traditional telephone networks or cellular networks in the United States."

Gary, Who are the subscribers. If suddenly, I can't call this or that phone is it because they stopped subscribing? Unlike Skype, Canada calls cost $, sad.

We intend to make money off of advertising. If you configure your ATA or devices, you'd never see ads, and that revenue stream would dry up. Advertising is one way we will able to provide such an inexpensive service.

Anyone that tells you that there is a need to use services from IP phones, cell phones or other devices or wants 3rd party applications developed using an OPEN API, must not have experienced the call quality we offer, soon nobody will be using cell phone and blackberries, and you will see everyone with their laptops hanging around coffee shops in their cars when they need to make a call and are away ("Or it is too heavy to carry their desktop system and solar cells or wind driven power sources?") from home."

-----------------------------------------------------------

Face the facts Gary:

1. You can't back up your call quality claims, with facts and stats. It's NOT even a telecommunications service, so PLEASE stop the CLEC, it's like POTS BS!

2. It is Ad based, and has NO Opt Out ability, but charges you also.

3. No Remote Access to these services of ANY kind without the "Device" and/or a computer with an Internet connection.

4.You can only use ONE device, which ALWAYS requires a computer, ALWAYS requires an internet connection to use.

You Can't BRO anything, hardware or 3rd Party add-ons.

5. Does NOT offer any other services, can't even support outbound conference calling of ANY kind, or chat/file sharing ability.

6. Has No Free calling ability inside/outside the U.S. at ALL times ("There is a FEE for this, even now"), unless the called party also has "The Device".

7. No free calling to Canada PSTN numbers, like Skype has.

8. Can't be logged in at multiple place/devices to receive calls.

9. What are the ods that ANY 3rd party applications will be allowed or devices in the future, SLIM! because it would impact the Ad revenue.

So NO diversity in the future, minus possibly a Web based interface ("With Ads") of course, once aqgain, requiring a computer and not supporting remote access or other devices.

10. Unlike Skype, There is a FEE per year, if that FEE is NOT paid, you can't even call other people that have the "Device" for FREE in the Future:

I quote:

"The initial term of this license is for one year and may be renewed (for an additional fee) for additional terms of one year each."

So there is NOTHING Free about using this, Nada, Zip, Zero. Skype can be used for FREE forever. Skype to Skype calls are ALWAYS free. Even Skype to Skype outbound conferencing calls are FREE with up to 24 participants + the Host = 25.

I could go on and on, but you need to stop drinking that Kool-Aid and start looking for facts, not the conjecture you have been using all this time.

You can use Skype for FREE day 1, Gary, nothing to Pay for, so your solution requires MONEY always, in all case, and it will require MONEY every year, accoording to the current TOS.

No wonder instructions for running "Magicjack" as a system service ("Which would make it Hidden are NOT Public") posted anywhere. You can't find the TOS from the main page as well.

Shame on you Gary.

So, is this what you mean? IF not what things are false about this?

Re: My review of MagicJack

o how bad could it be? Skype’s list of missteps in 2007 is lengthy:

* It took away SkypeIn private numbers from 8,000 paying customers in London with less than a month’s notice.
* It went dark for four days in August.
* Its November release of version 3.6 restricted its “High Quality Video” to three models of Logitech webcams and required a Duo Core processor; this decision was immediately reversed, but only after the damage to the company's customer-service reputation had been done.
* It lacks a customer-service telephone number.
* It lacks customer-service live chat.
* It lacks a customer-service email address.
* It requires a minimum of four days for a customer-service reply, even for paying customers.

Is it any wonder that Skype customer use is predicted to be flat for 2007?

Amid these complaints, BusinessWeek reported that eBay may be looking to unload its Skype division to keep from dumping any more money into it,

With Skype rudderless and leaderless, it's only a matter of time before investors on Wall Street and in Europe start pounding away at eBay’s stock price, according to Andy Abramson at VoIP Watch. Abramson also points out how difficult it will be for eBay to find an ideal buyer for Skype without dishing it over to Google.

Wanted: a European telco executive with operator-side experience; the ability to liaise with Skype’s Estonian developers; enough charisma to deal with the media, bloggers and shareholders; a history of turning a profit; and no connection to Google.

So after the inevitable happens and ebay dumps skype or raises its prices and fees while continuing its lack of investment in new developments? Who you gonna call with skype once you can only call GoogleTalk accounts after Google scoops it up in a fire sale?

Your analysis of the terms of services for magicjack demonstrates either your intent to deliberately deceive or lack of comprehension and reasoning skills.

When you buy a magicjack you get an industry standard SIP based VOIP product backed by a captive network of local telephone exchanges. You pay $20 for the magicjack device and software and $20 for the first year's free calling anywhere in Canada or the USA. So under the terms of service you have prepaid for 1 years unlimited calling anywhere in Canada or USA or anywhere in the world if calling a magicjack phone number. After that its $20 a year while skype is $48/yr and prices will go up or they will have to feed ads because ebay isn't going to keep running the thing at a loss.

Skype on the other hand is non-standard, non-SIP and uses your computer and everyone else's computer with a skype account to steal cpu and computer resources from in order to make the skype network. Then for extra money skype will combine that with a real phone company network that they must BUY (since unlike magicjack they aren't a phone company themselves) and are subject to being run out of business at any time just like Sunrocket. It is this cobbled together network of each skype user's computer that is responsible for the insecurity and instability of skype. It is why skype went completely out of business for almost 4 days in 2007 just because microsoft pushed out an XP service update. How long till skype goes down for several days in a row again? 4 days and no phone calls in or out. That's why no sane person would base their business and income on skype or any other voip provider.

Magicjack has also announced they are going to allow ATA devices on their network and other features in 2008.

Nobody knows skype better than its owner ebay, and ebay has written its investment in skype down and talk is they are looking to dump it before the value of the company goes even lower. Skype at its current prices and configuration apparently doesn't have a business model that will sustain any profits. No profits and its a goner sooner or later, probably sooner.

Magicjack does not serve any ads at this time. It might serve some in the future its true. You won't have to view them if you don't want to just like you don't have to view the magicjack softphone if you don't want to. Magicjack's advantage is its simplicity, its captive network of local phone companies, its server based and doesn't rely on a cobbled together network of home computers subject to the whim of microsoft software updates, and it has superior voice quality due to its nationwide network of local telphone companies. These advantages provide magicjack with the prospects of much longer term growth and profitability that skype at its current prices and structure clearly lacks. Just ask its owner, ebay.

Read the TOS Gary, Magicjack can TAKE AWAY ANY services at anytime, with NO refund, at least Skype did give vouchers to these people when this happened.

Of course there is NO track-record for MagicJack, so, if it is in business, next year? Then we shall see, what if has as a track record.

You Say:

"Your analysis of the terms of services for magicjack demonstrates either your intent to deliberately deceive or lack of comprehension and reasoning skills."

Let's see what others have for reasoning skills Gary. When they read the same TOS:

The TOS says NOTHING about Canada Gary and free calls there, nor does it PROMISE any period of time for the U.S. as well that can't be taken away, at anytime according to the TOS.

You say:

"After that its $20 a year"

Right Gary, next year is $20, the year after?

Again, there is NO Free services without the initial payment this year, and a FEE every year, $20.00 is NOT Free Gary. The TOS plainly states, the license to use the "Device/Software" requires an annual fee, not my words Gary, I quoted the TOS, so not my words on any of it, the words are plain to see for others to view, even you Gary.

"real phone company network"

Read Gary, the TOS plainly states it is NOT a telecommunications company, so PLEASE!

Why does Magicjack need the ability to store, copy my private information in OTHER countries?

Its really rather simple. Try to pay attention. When you pay $20 for a years worth of unlimited local and long distance calling to anywhere in the USA and Canada you have an additional contract for service. The terms of service is no longer the only contract you have, but the new contract fits exactly with the terms of service as previously quoted. If such comprehension is beyond your capabilities then take an asprin and forget those law school aspirations.

How long will skype be available period or available at $48 year when they lose money at that price point with their failing business model.

Nobody knows the value of skype better than its owner ebay, and ebay is looking to dump it rather than continue to pour good money after bad with its profitless business model.

Gary, please read the TOS, it says the license to use the "Device" is year by year and requires an annual fee, the words are very clear. I quote, from the license section 8:

I quote from the TOS License Section 8:

"The initial term of this license is for one year and may be renewed (for an additional fee) for additional terms of one year each."

I quote from the Payment Section 9:

"Use of the magicJack device is free. Your purchase of the magicJack device and registration of the magicJack device gives you a license to use the magicJack and the Software for one year. To continue using the magicJack device and the Software after the end of the initial one-year term, you must renew your Software access license for additional one-year terms at magicJack's then applicable license fee. Failure to renew your registration after the end of the initial term or any renewal term will result in immediate termination of your license and access to any magicJack features. You will not be able to use the magicJack device and your right to use any phone number that was allocated to you will be canceled."

There is no way you can use the device for FREE next year Gary, not my words, theirs. Meaning, there is NO FREE service, and never was, your first year cost money and additional years cost money. What part of that statement don't you understand?

Gary, please STOP saying that your words over-ride the TOS, read the TOS, believe anything you wish, but, you are bound by the TOS, not by your false statements:

Face the facts Gary, you can download and use Skype for FREE, always could, there are no requirements for you to pay any FEE or initial monies of any kind. That's FREE Gary, get it, no monies involved or required at anytime to use FREE services, first year, or any year in the future, this includes Skype to Skype calls, Skype to Skype conference calls, chats, public chats, file transfers and free 3rd party applications.

Magicjack is NOT a CLEC, if it is, have the TOS changed because it or YOU are LYING, it says that Magicjack is NOT a telecommunications company, I belive the TOS, not you Gary.

So as I have stated, your statements are "Conjecture" and the TOS is fact.

Your claims of what MagicJack will or won't do, in the future, are just as likley to take place as you being elected as president of the U.S. this year.

So PLEASE, learn that the TOS is the legal binding document in this case, your statements are not binding, and have no value of "Promise" for those that sign up for these services.

You are being a moron. Hopefully not on purpose.

Initial term of license is 1 year and may be renewed for a fee after that. That sentence merely refers to the half of the first year's cost of $40 that goes to buy the first year's service and the $20 fee for the second and subsequent years services. There is no contradiction or anything mysterious here.

Skype has the same annual prepaid fees they just happen to be a lot HIGHER than on magicjack. On skype its $48 per year not $20 per year.

You are losing credibility with each post on this, because your big discovery about the tos isn't a discovery or rocket science to understand.

Can't you even remember posts from 1 day or 2 days ago in this same thread?

I've previously posted at your request two links to the CLEC certifications of YMAX Communications Corp and noted how this information is easily discoverable by anyone who knows how to use a Google search. You do know how to use a Google search don't you? I'm beginning to wonder given your rash of nonsensical posts this evening.

Also, just a reminder for your failing memory as previously posted by me to you in this thread. YMAX is the owner of MagicJack. YMAX owns a nationwide network of CLECs (local phone companies). Therefore, MagicJack unlike skype has a captive nationwide network of local phone companies backing up its business model.

Put down your magic eight ball and stop trying to LIE about what the TOS means since I've demonstrated quite clearly you have no comprehension of what it says.

Maybe you should just log in again under another name and tell everyone how smart you are. Perhaps someone will believe it this time.

Please try using your mental prowess and attested expertise about skype to explain to everyone how a company like skype which loses money hand over fist and whose owner wants to sell it fast can stay in business without cutting services and raising prices?

Magicjack has a much better business model one that can sustain voice quality and profitability. Skype doesn't.

ZOverlord, I did answer you. You just chose to ignore the answers or are incapable of understanding them. The answers are here for all to read just scoll up.

Magicjack sells its free (no minute charges or other charges) unlimited calling to ANY phone in USA and Canada prepaid annual subscription for $19.95 per year. Skype sells its competing bundle of services for $48.00 per year, but Skype sells their services at a loss, and its owner ebay is looking to dump the company rather than continue to poor cash into the company to cover its losses. The original founder and owner of the company who until 2007 continued to run the company at least on paper has officially resigned and moved on to other things. Skype's prices will be going up or services will be going down or both.

You still haven't explained how a company like skype that is losing money and whose founder has moved on to better things and whose current owner wants to dump it can continue in business without raising prices or cutting services or both.

ZOverLord @ 7th Jan 12:59AM:
Re: My review of MagicJack

So what I said about the TOS is true then, as the TOS states.

Thanks.

You say:

"Magicjack sells its free (no minute charges or other charges) unlimited calling to ANY phone in USA and Canada prepaid annual subscription for $19.95 per year."

As the TOS states, this is the annual fee that must be paid to even call other Magicjack devices, in other countries, or the U.S. and Canada, in the second year, the 3rd, and every year after. So there is no FREE calling Gary. Meaning......

Year 1. Everyone, currently, needs to pay $39.95 for the device and the unlimited calling, this would include people outside the U.S. and Canada. Do you need charts for this?

Year 2. Current price is $19.95 for the second year if prepaid annual subscription for $19.95 per year is sent now. It could rise later. Do you need charts for this?

So, there is NO Free calling Gary, everyone must spend $ to be able to get the device and then use the software evey year.

Users can't decide to use the device to simply call others who have the device, for free, without paying the annual fee, each and every year following the initial year purchase of the device. So the device beomes useless even to be used to call others with the device, if the annual fee is not paid.

Both the Caller, and the Called parties, after the first year, would need to have paid the annual fee, if they wanted to call ANY Magicjack device in ANY country, including the U.S. and Canada, even if they did NOT want ANY of the Magicjack services, like the telephone number, or unlimited calling, in years after the first year!

("Read the TOS, payment and license sections, it is very clear about this"):

According to the current TOS, Magicjack users are NOT allowed to use ANY other device, or use ANY 3rd party software as well. ("If it's wrong, fix it") because that document defines the terms of service with Magicjack, NOT you.

Do you need charts for this? To see everyone needs to pay some amount of money now, and every year, according to the current TOS ("If it's wrong, fix it") because that document defines the terms of service with Magicjack, NOT you.

Gary, Skype allows you to use other hardware and 3rd party software as well, and you can use Skype for FREE Gary, using these 3rd party applications and other hardware, get it, no $, for FREE, ever, what part of making calls for FREE Gary, without the need to send Skype money ever, confuses you Gary?

Skype to Skype calls: All Parties ("Since there can be conference calls") pay nothing to talk, ever.

Magicjack: Each party needs to purchase the device, and pay a annual fee, each year after, in order to continue to use the software, read the TOS ("If it's wrong, fix it") because that document defines the terms of service with Magicjack, NOT you.

So, as you can see Gary, the first year cost money to purchase the device, and other years require ALL parties to pay the annual fee even if they only wanted to call other people with the Magicjack, and NEVER make a PSTN type call, so.....there is NO Free calling with Magicjack, everybody needs to buy the MagicJack and each year, pay a FEE to continue to use the software.

If you could read Gary, Skype, is NOT losing money, however, eBay did say it was over-valued at purchase time, so there was a write-down, do you understand the difference Gary. Forget it, I don't want to get too deep.

You keep trash talking Skype, about matters you don't understand, or really know about, you never take the time to read the facts, because your goal seems not to care about the facts, and you don't even understand what a write-down is vs not making a profit. Sadly, you make the same type of non researched non factual statements ("According to the current TOS") about Magicjack as well.

But....It is ok that Magicjack has closed the offcial Magicjack forum, at least as of now it is closed and has been. Why, because people we being honest about their problems? Wow how Slezy, but....Now there is an unoffical Magicjack forum, lol. Wow, that gives me such a warm and fuzzy feeling. NOT!

Do a web search on Magicjack and problems, you will find many many pages. People complaining that the offical forum was closed, and still they don't know why. That they have not been able in the past, to even get the address that they need to send the device to in order to get a refund.

I am not saying that Skype is perfect, But I personally, won't let you call things FREE here that are not, I won't sit back and watch you tell people here, things that the current TOS does not support as fact.

Who are you to over-ride the current TOS, can people get their money back from you when things go bad, and they want a refund, or you told them information that the TOS said is NOT true? Maybe they purchased the device and services based on what you said vs fact? If so, how should they contact you?

Face the facts Gary, what other company has closed their user forum, what other company talks about free calls to others in other countries yet fails to include that, the annual fee must be paid to do this after the first year and every year after?

What other company does not inform people that ONLY their device, and software can be used with their services by allowing the TOS to be found easily, before you give your email address.

Don't you think that if the TOS could be read from the main page that many would NOT register with their email address, if they knew that the Magicjack device and the Magicjack software, according to the current TOS is the ONLY device and software that can be used for these services. That to use ANY other 3rd party hardware or applications is a violation of the terms of services.

You can download Skype and use 3rd party devices and 3rd party applications and never ever pay Skype anything, that's what FREE calls are Gary, not if you need to pay out annual fee, every stinking year after the first year just to call other Magicjack devices and not ever make any PSTN calls, then and only then, you can do this or that for FREE. Get it Gary.

I would have posted these FACTS in the Magicjack Official forum, but is seems they closed it.

Skype does NOT need an unofficial forum Gary. The Good the bad and the ulgy are posted there every day for all to see.

There is nothing to hide or remove from the Public! Not all of it is good, but it is there for all to see. When companies start to remove posts or close user forums, it makes one wonder, why?

Besides Gary, when you want "Official Help" you don't go to the "Unofficial" forum for it.

Was the official forum closed Gary so that the unofficial forum can delete posts, when and if needed, that may not say good things about the Magicjack, and then this way, not look so bad, because, after all, it's NOT the offical Magicjack forum? If not, how can we "officially" know that won't happen Gary, now that the "official" forum is closed?

Please....If you want your money back, do you send it to the unofficial I want my money back address, lol.

See where the SLEEZE factor starts to creep in Gary?

Maybe if the TOS was available on the main page or at least the store page, or at least easily found.

If the statement that Currently, you cannot use the Magicjack device, after the second year, to do anything, unless you pay the annual fee.

Re-Open the official forum, so it looks like the SLEEZE factor is improving. Leave the bad posts, life sucks, but that's the honest way.

Let people know up front that currently, NO devices or 3rd party applications can be used currently with Magicjack services other than the current device and software provided by Magicjack.

Now, this might be a decent deal, all the facts are present, and people can decide based on the truth, and they also have an offical forum to help move them toward resloving any problems. If you want to be tied to an annual fee to only make calls even just to other Magicjack device users.

Still no response ZOverlord about skype's profitless business model and how it can stay in business without raising prices from the already high $48.00 per year compared to $19.95 per year for magicjack.

So your examination of the terms of service have finally led you back to information publicly known and acknowledged everywhere, including this thread, long ago. Namely that For $39.95 the first year and $19.95 the second and subsequent years you get unlimited free local and long distance calling to any phone number, land line or mobile, anywhere in the USA and Canada or anywhere in the world to another magicjack phone number.

To get that same set of services from skype one must buy skype pro and skype in for a prepaid annual cost of $48.00 per year. But what cost in the second and third years assuming skype is even still in business given its losses and an owner that wants to dump the skype company rather than continue to put cash into skype to cover its losses.

So the big TOS riddle in your mind has been resolved. If you forget the resolution see above.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Please re-read my post(s) it would seem that you missed my responses.

You get what you pay for Gary, your solution, no official forum for the users, Ad based, read the TOS, NO Opt-Out, email, as also stated in the TOS, No FREE calling, after the first year the device was purchased ("Also requires the called party to puchase the device, FIRST, before they can call for FREE or be called for FREE when located in other countries") after the first year, every year annual fees after the first year are required to be paid, otherwise the device is NOT allowed to use the software, which means it can't even be used to call just Magicjack devices, which means it becomes a paper weight, only one device supported/allowed, no 3rd party devices allowed, no 3rd party applications allowed, no IP phone ability, no mutiple logon use by mutiple computers and or devices for the same account, no remote use of services like by cell phones, blackberries, landlines, no remote voice mail checking like by cell phones, blackberries, landlines,no chats, no video calls, no file transfer, no outbound conference calling, no call transfer abilty, no benefits for people in other countries outside the U.S. to save money on calls in their countries, or for people who use services there when they travel to those countries to save money in the country they are traveling.

All of the above is available even when using Skype for FREE Gary. All the above is available in all 3 cases listed below.

It's important to note that with Magicjack there is a Standard Mailing fee of $6.95 as well, above the $39.95 first year charge.

Don't forget Gary, Skype can be used for FREE, so it can be $46.90 ("$39.95 + $6.95 standard mailing fee") a year cheaper than the first year of Magicjack prices, and $19,95 a year cheaper, the second year as well. If you wish to make Skype to Skype calls only. Never any charges for that.

If people just want Unlimited Calling from/to the U.S. and Canada and have no need to have another telephone number, they can do this for $10.90 U.S.cheaper than Magicjack can, because Magicjack first year is $39.95 U.S. + $6.95 U.S. standard mailing = $46.90 U.S. and also get $12.00 in free credit that can be used to make calls to other countries outside the U.S. and Canada or use it toward a telephone number. This really would be $22.90 U.S. cheaper than the first year of Magicjack. This also includes ALL of the above abilities that Magicjack cannot or does not currently support.

For $12.00 U.S. more, or $1.10 more than Magicjack per year $39.95 U.S + $6.95 U.S. standard mailing = $46.90 U.S., they can have a telephone number as well, and even in other countries, not just the U.S. And when they travel to other countries they can save money on calls in those countries, and people that live in other countries can save money on calls in those countries as well.

If you wanted you could have as many as 10 different phone numbers attached to one account, so that you could have numbers in different area codes, or even different countries so that people could call you using a local number, and you can be logged on to MANY computers in different places, or be logged in on IP phones, Blackberries, cell phones and other remote devices at the same time, and first device or computer to answer the call, gets the call.

So for all the things you can do with Skype as listed above, including NOT renewing any services in the following years, but being able to make FREE calls, without any annual fees, I think it's a well spent extra .09 cents U.S. a month or $1.10 U.S. a year, don't you Gary?

Thanks

Re: My review of MagicJack

.
If you want to attempt to duplicate the free unlimited local and long distance calling to any phone, land line or mobile, to the USA and Canada that magicjack provides. You have to buy skype pro plus skype in and that costs $48/yr plus the cost of a headset/mic or proprietary non-standards based skype phone. Compared to the $39.99 cost for the magicjack device, software, and 1st years free unlimited local and long distance calling. After the first year skype is $48/yr or higher and magicjack is $19.99.

You waste lots of time talking about all kinds of things irrelevant to the above attempting to compare apples to oranges but the fact remains if you want unlimited free local and long distance phone calls to any number or line in the USA and Canada its $39.99 for magicjack and $48 plus the cost of a non-standards based skype phone.

And then with magicjack you get a standards based SIP over VOIP server based solution backed up by its own captive nationwide network of local phone companies with superior voice quality compared to skype's model of a non-SIP based peer network of all users computers that can go down if Microsoft pushes out a service pack update and subject to the whims of the real phone companies from which skype (unlike magicjack) must BUY phone exchange access.

Gary, you have one more point. Skype pro has their so called "Fair Use Policy" Restrict the user upto 3000 minutes per month. So its not unlimited... is that fair? lol

Skype Pro Fair Usage Policy
National calls (to landlines and mobiles in US and Canada, and to landlines only in all other countries in which Skype Pro is available) are free of charge for Skype Pro users subject to a fair usage limit of 3,000 minutes per user per month. Once this limit has been exceeded Skype reserves the right to implement normal SkypeOut charges for any additional minutes used. Skype Pro is for your personal use only.

Re: My review of MagicJack

Gary do the simple math I suggested above, there are 3 cases, 3 ways one can use Skype, because their services are broken down into individual services, you can't do that with Magicjack. This post explains it all Gary:

»Re: My review of MagicJack

Case 1: $46.90 less than Magicjack

Case 2: $22.90 less than Magicjack

Case 3: .09 U.S. cents more a month or $1.10 U.S. more a year More than Magicjack

So..... of the 3 cases, 1 is .09 Cents a month more or $1.10 a year more with Skype. The other 2 cases are cheaper than Magicjack. Providing many more services than Magicjack can/could for all 3 cases as well.

Magicjack is NOT standard SIP in the sense that Magicjack does NOT support the user modifying any SIP settings.

Read the TOS for Magicjack ANY and all services can be terminated at any time for ANY reason, no refund, nada, zip, nothing, so forget about fair use, you can lose 2 years of paid services if Magicjack does go BK, which is NOT rare these days. Skype using 2005 subscriber numbers is ranked 4:

These numbers have gone up since not down since then

I would much more worry about Magicjack being in business by the years end than I ever would about Skype going away. Especially with the official Magicjack forum being closed and all, not good signs, even this early :(

AFAIC, mostly anything is possible. The question is why would anyone want to waste an investment of $50 for unlimited free calls to US/Canada by converting his/her device to use with Skype services that cost $$$ for a mediocre quality (YMMV) of unlimited free calls to US/Canada. The same is also true in reverse unless Skype ceases to exist and leaves its clients wondering with their expensive and unusable Skype hardware. For me, I am a happy camper with free VoSPs services for P2P calls and/or I/O-bound from/to PSTN, i.e. GrandCentral + GizmoProject. I know it is too cumbersome to have ever:
Press 1 to receive an incoming call from GrandCentral that is forwarded to a GizmoProject account configured on my ATA device
•Login into my GrandCentral account to place free outbound PSTN calls through its web2click feature.
I just am too cheap to complain and can live with the above nuisances mainly because the services are free, YMMV. :) When the time will come, I sure will just let my Asterisk handle the dirty job to automatically press 1 to receive an incoming call.

Good point. Especially since after you use your first year of magicjack, magicjack is only $20. MJ for me was only $40 cuz I got in with the SR promo saving the whopping couple of bucks they were charging for shipping at the time.
I guess if MJ went out of business and the device was still in working order it might be something to consider. But as of now I guess I should divert my brainpower to other things :)

Would be cool however if it could be made to work with SIP, Skype, Magicjack and the other services it could support based on some menu selection.

Then you could choose dynamically what you wanted to do. Maybe you want to make an international call or free call on Skype, and then make a SIP call and then a U.S. or Canada call on Magicjack.

Or if you have multiple systems, Mac, Linux, Windows and you want to use it for the other systems at times. So you have drivers for those systems as well. Move the device from system to system when needed.

Looks like all the software is there for different systems and services and for free:

Exactly, especially if they all can run on an embedded Linux system with any SIP compliant ATA devices as extensions. I reckon the technology is there; however, it is Skype who still refuses to cooperate to open its proprietary protocol. If Skype really wants to make more $$$ and don't want to open its proprietary protocol, perhaps Skype can consider to ditch its proprietary protocol for SIP. This way, we all can share together and consumers as well as VoSPs are all will be happy. :)

Can the software fit into a 4MB flash chip on an embedded Linux system like an open-source supported WiFi router? I know Asterisk can and am using it on my Free LaFonera WiFi router. :D Perhaps, someone just needs to port those codes as a small plugins to Asterisk.

Awesome product! It is indeed magical!

I am eagerly waiting for new phone#'s in my area code
Until then GrandCentral's forwarding feature works awesomely great with MJ and is a fully free service. Find out more at Grandcentral.com.
I am also hoping that the call waiting feature has a fix soon so both parties can not hear me at the same time
I pray that one day ]MJ will allow me to by-pass my PC and connect directly to my gateway so my PC wont have to be constantly powered on for it to work.
Voice choppiness does happen on calls, about 4-5 calls out of 50 or so I make each day and MJ's support is now currently checking their server end for me.
I have had no major issues with installing it or with overall use.
I have happily already called MCI and had my landline service with them terminated.
Now I can finally afford to indulge myself with the luxury of having a high-Speed internet connection for the very 1st time in the 7+ years I have been online & I still save tons of $$$'s.
Good riddance to those monthly phonebills with their outrageous taxes and surcharge fees!
Hello with a massively heart felt greetings & tears in my eyes to the joy of High-Speed net + dirt cheap voip!
TY goes to MJ for allowing me to crawl out of my land-locked cave!
I feel like I have indeed entered into a new era!
So what if there is a few bugs, after all is said and done, MagicJack ROCKS in my book!!!

You just dial the phone the same as if you were using a regular POTS line. The softphone will tell you if the line is ready, but that is all you HAVE to pay attention to on the softphone. That is a major advantage for me. I have a two line phone in the home office, and for outgoing calls, I just switch it to line 2.

I forgot about this already. Anyways I use Onesuite.com for international calls and Magicjack within the U.S.

Some users use MJ to call Onesuite local access number (if they don't have one in their area) then dial the international number (using Onesuite this time)

No -one called the 800 number, and I've moved my fax line to Myfax.com.

I bought a SkypeIn UK number so family there can call me.

All told, I'll save over $700 a year.

I have plugged the cordless base set into the magic jack, so all the phone in teh house work through it. I never turn off the main computer anyway, so no issue with leaving it on.

Presumably the additional fee may be $60.00 per year, but that should include service for 2 numbers.
That should still be a good price. About $7.00 per month (including the $19.95 annual licencing fee). Unlimited incoming and outgoing. No need to keep the computer on. No need to give some company $199.99 up front (like Sunrocket-Teleblend).
I also heard that name capability on caller-id may also be available.

$60 will be much if you are saying is right. Magicjack will not get business if they bagan to charge for porting ,using ATa etc
So you're saying that they won't get customers who don't want to pay for it? Where's the problem with that?

Overhere no problem but if you are going to pay for the ATA device useage and porting fees plus ohter extra charges will slowdown the customer usage.

It's been quite a while since I checked into the thread here. I'm happy to note that a few days ago I found out that they have a native MAC version running. I'm thrilled to report that my iMac is running MagicJack natively now perfectly. This eliminates the need for me to run VMWare Fusion all the time just for MJ.

If you haven't bought it, buy it. Quality has continued to be phenomenal.

From the information that I obtained, ATA capabilities may be available soon. However there will be a charge (because the advertisements can't be on an ATA to subsidize the service).
Presumably the additional fee may be $60.00 per year, but that should include service for 2 numbers.
That should still be a good price. About $7.00 per month (including the $19.95 annual licencing fee). Unlimited incoming and outgoing.

So that is $84 a year. Amazingly cheap, if true.

Can anyone in the business tell us how much Borislow would be losing at that price? I'm wondering how long he can keep it going before the company collapses.

It depends on how well capitalized MJ is. Typically with upfront payment deals, continued sales growth is required to feed the beast. I'm sure they have a target subscriber base number at which they can start to sell advertising ... depending on when they hit that number, and factoring in new sales and terminating minutes for other carriers for revenue, they operate until they run out of funds.

If you take into consideration FREE incoming/outgoing calls from/to US PSTN numbers on your ATA device through a combination of FREE services provided by GrandCentral (GC) + GizmoProject (GP), then MJ is no longer an amazingly cheap service as you claimed above. Top with a VoIP BackDoor Dialing scheme, you definitely can place some FREE outgoing calls to (VoIP / Cell phone carriers based) US PSTN numbers from your GP account on your ATA device by prefixing the number you will be calling with a 0101. So, why pay some junk services if they can be had, @ the same if not better quality in services, for free?

MrMagicman,

I don't know about time is money, but I am somewhat tech savvy and when I glance at mazilo's work-around description, hell I would rather pay the $19 dollars a year and let the really Tech Savvy folks like mazilo beat the system. I barley can follow his description - no that's not true I can't follow it at all. :D

I am not taking sides here but so far it has been one of the best gadgets I have purchased in a long time. I know that my long distance calls have paid off my MagicJack and the two that I purchased for my Sister and Daughter, well MJ has to be losing money on them. Give two women a phone and tell them they can make all the long distance calls they want for free, talk about a kid in a candy store.

Re: My review of MagicJack

I just ordered a MJ and was looking for opinions/reviews. I'd like to eventually cancel my home phone service to save money. I like the MJ's low cost and simplicity but after reading the posts here the better solution for me may be the one that mazilo uses. (2008-01-07 23:24:24 post) My factors and conditions are below. What do you think?

Current phone usage and services:

1. RCN home phone service - about $45/mo. (I want to cancel this.)
2. AT&T cell phone service with 1500 rollover minutes/mo. that I don’t use up - $40/mo.
3. I make mostly local and long distance calls within the US and never make overseas calls.

I want:

1. free internet calls
2. the convenience, reliability, and safety of a landline phone
3. a permanent phone number that I can give out as my home phone and to port my current number, if possible
4. not having to keep my pc on all the time to receive calls
5. call screening, call waiting, caller id
6. ability to use a fax machine

Mazilo, could you possibly describe in more detail what your set up with GrandCentral and GizmoProject is like as I would like to try this? And can you tell me what you mean by your “ATA device” and “Asterisk?”

By the way, during the checkout process while ordering the MJ online, there was an option called the Platinum Member (or something like that) where I could pay the next 5 years’ fees up front for only $49.99. That’s half off so naturally I took it. =)

Thanks everyone!

2. the convenience, reliability, and safety of a landline phone.
VOIP because it runs over the internet and DSL or cable will never reach the reliability of POTS, unless you live where the POTS plant is in horrible condition. ;) POTS has power fauilure backup etc. DSL does not always offer this especially on remote terminals. So power is out DSL out and then VOIP is out.
VOIP can come close but not always. There are large businesses that use VOIP but their setups are specialized and do meet POTS or exceed it.

Just received my MJ the other day and it works great over OOL. Sound Quality is good. Now I hope they add more features. I read you can't do a 3 way call unless 2 people call you and you conference them in. Plus it would be nice to have online voicemail like OV.

The final feature that I hear is coming soon is number portability. It's not that I have 1 million people calling me, but it would be nice to move my number and drop OV for good. 20 bucks for a year vs 20 bucks a month(After 3 service discount) is a great buy even if they are online in business for a few years.

Great thread!!! OverLord and Gary....you guys are unbeatable when it comes to supporting own viewpoint. LOL
(By the way, Gary, the expression "free unlimited calls" is a fallacy, either you want or not; The jack itself is $ 20 and you pay $ 19.95 for the first year of service - total $ 39.95; hence YOU PAY for A SERVICE that comes with or includes those unlimited calls. FREE should stay out of the wording)

Well, well, well... It seems that most customers are already happy with the "magic", computer and internet-bound little stick. Doesn't Vonage have a portable jack as well?
I personally think (guess at this point should raise the tomato shield) that unless we talk about someone on the move, a business-type person dragging permanently a laptop with him/her, the "magic" jack is not that ... magic. The last time I checked, most business-type people HAVE CELLS. I sincerely believe that someone of that caliber cannot live without a cell, and opting to rely on the jack (no, not on Jack Sparrow).
Conversely, people who cannot afford a cell, more likely cannot afford a laptop. And even if they have a cell, how much roaming can you do in vacation? You have to be an idiot to have just a local/regional plan with limited coverage and minutes (versus a national plan),go in vacation and keep talking on the phone for hours while roaming...so that the purchase of the "magic" jack would really have a basis.

I could agree with someone arguing that the device is good for students WITHOUT a CELL who want stay connected with mom and pap. Not sure you can find anyomore a student without a cell (of course, purchased by mom and pap), but the scenario can be taken into account. Are quite a few other scenarios you can think of, but the "magic" jack's overbuzz is somewhat unfounded. Let's wait and see how many cell companies will report a ridicullously enormous drop in customer base... (Someone was saying that Magicjack signs customers lately at a few millions/month rate? LOL)

Vonage -vs- MagicJack

An important difference between Vonage and MagicJack is that my VONAGE phone WILL WORK without my computer being turned ON.

Also Vonage has excellent customer service (24/7)! Example: Vonage customer service led me step by step on setting up my Vonage phone with an older model D-Link wireless route(even D-Link was not able to help and wanted to charge me for technical support as the router was out of warranty).

MagicJack needs LIVE customer support!!
MagicJack needs to WORK WITHOUT a computer ON.

Fix those two BIG issues and they MAY have a winner.

I have a dream, of lower phone bill and equal or better service. I use my cell for all long distance and put up with poor quality now and then. I've ordered MJ and hope to work out the following.

Current bills
$45 Internet, $42 Cell, $12 long distance , $18 local
Total $117

Future if MJ works out.
$45 internet, $25 Cell, $2 long distance, $18 local
Total $90 but get unlimite calling and hopefully better quality than my cell coverage.

Saves me $27 a month or 324 a year and get better service, and if MJ is down for some reason I can still pickup my Cell.

If it turns out to be great and I can port my local number then I'll loose the local and save another $18 a month or 216 a year more.

Since I use my MagicJack exclusively with a laptop, I went searching for a phone that would fit nicely in my laptop case. I found a little flip phone at »magicvoicephone.com and it works great without the huge size of a desktop phone.

Magicjack is clear and simple, a great gadget to have. But the single reason why I am sending it back is because I can't use a regular international phone card that you buy at the corner store. Magicjack want's to corner you into using their international service which cost twice as much. My parents are always calling international and it took me one year to teach them how to use the phone cards, so to try to teach them voip website would be imposssible. I have had my MJ for a week or so and ... it kinda works. Some numbers connect just fine and the sound is good (on the handset -- I have yet to get a sound out of my PC speakers when using the software). But sometimes when I try calling local numbers like my neighbor across the street or a supplier a mile away, I get a weird double ringing sound, then after about 6 rings (some of them being the double ring) I get a fast busy signal for a few seconds, then silence. The neighbor says their phone never rang. Again, this happens mostly to calls to landlines in my 817 area code and it is persistent, ie I haven't been able to call my neighbor using MJ since getting it.

It's kinda frustrating when I want to make a business call and cannot complete the call ...

Update -- I finally found and did the update.exe thing at mjdotcom/fixit but alls thats happened is those same local numbers now have a 3-5 weird ring and after about 6 or 7 of those the attempted call terminates with a dial tone instead of silence.

As a side note, since my last post -- after changing a bunch of audio stuff on my machine and still getting no sound from the dial pad or ring sounds, I'm curious what I should hear. Since the calls I'm attempting seem to fail, would I hear anything at all?

Very confusing. At least I'm discovering these problems well before the 30 day trial is up (like that matters, I charged this thing to Discover and, since I've had the same card since the early 80's it's way ez to dispute).

Geez, I'm just trying to hook up with my neighbor when her kids are at school...

at 2:40pmHi Folks,
I do not usually write reviews at all but this time in defense of a really great product I simply felt compelled to do so. I am no youngster nor am I a computer genius as the inventor of this amazing product surely is in my opinion. I am merely a former New Yorker now living in Boca Raton, Florida.
I have worked in many fields through out the years ,one being sales and this MagicJack has to be a saleperson's dream. At first I thought another gadget that is sure to fail like all the other as seen on TV disasters of the past. They are usually junk in my opinion and one really has to be very careful and even a bit ready to get one you know where !!
However, because of this fella Dan who invented this product and his background I thought I would take a chance.
Well I did . . . . .. . . It works great !! I have since ordered two more and turned on a bunch of my friends to this great deal as well. Who wants to give hundreds of dollars away each year to the phone companies or even the Skype Sellers for that matter !!
I use one at home here and I sent two others to people in Brazil , a step son and an Uncle through marriage. Took about a week to get to them but once they arrived they were calling me right off in less then 5 minutes and clear as a bell. Don’t know who was more thrilled Them or Me :O)
According to what you have set up in your PC I guess you may or may not have to go through a few quirks but MagicFix takes care of that for you very , very quickly without ever a need to call anyone or wait on hold for an hour !!
I had no problem at all with mine nor did my step son. Uncle had a bit of an issue but was on his way in less then 15 minutes and everything has been fine with ALL of us ever since.
If you simply use this gadget when you traveled and only traveled once a year it would still be a bargain. To use it anymore then that as we do is a God send.
Now that they have their own in Brazil they can call us here on any of our phones, cellular or a wired home phone. Not only us but anyone here and anyone who has their MagicJack number can call them as well and without the use of a computer at all. Amazing !!
Thank you Dan for a Great Product and Thanks for ALL that money we are saving too.
P.S. One last note to all those nay sayers and complainers I have seen out there who prompted me to actually write this review in the first place. Patience !! Find out what YOU are doing Wrong or What is WRONG with YOUR System and ALL will be fine. And MOST Important . . . . . read those helpful tips and above all the instructions !!
Don’t know what the heck you expected for such a low price anyway. Did you expect the guy to come over and personally set this up for you and give you lessons ?
I know people who are computers morons admittedly and even they found it as simple as a child’s toy to use.
Maybe some of you are just over qualified :O)
Have a Great Day A Better Night and an even Better Week End

Have at it magic jack. Doesn't matter to me. Here's what I've done.
Went on Ebay and bought a small $108 desk top PC (no monitor) I used a monitor I already had with the current system to set up the magic jack. I also ordered a VGA monitor switcher for $25. Bought a new battery backup for the ebay PC for $45. Already had an old 3 unit cordless phone system. But you can buy these fairly cheap. My internet and home networking already has it's own UPS. My cheap PC only runs my Magic Jack, I use it for nothing else. I also use the power saving feature of the PC.
No worries of, power outages, internet outage due to a power failure, PC ads or pop ups.
It’s all stand alone and the cost is more than worth it.
I use my laptop for everything else.
If your worried about adding MJ to your computer, this is the way to go. It’s a no brainier.

I ordered the magicjack two days ago using the website. I was able to see a $1.00 hold placed on my cc account by magicjack at my bank's website after ordering. Usually this one dollar hold is to verify an account exists and is normal. I reached the final ordering screen that stated congratulations details of your order will be e-mailed to you within an hour.

My credit card was not charged a penny (the $1.00 hold came off) and I never received any e-mail from magic jack.

So that's it. I get no magicjack. And I have moved along with my life.

After reading these threads I am sure that only heartache and despair will come from magicjack support. And I am just the unlucky guy who would place a second order and have *both* orders be charged two seconds later.

The clear indicator that a complaint would be headed for disaster is that the ordering process provides no UPS tracking number or invoice number or order number. Those numbers are all promised to be sent in the e-mail that never arrived. So I would be absolutely crazy to do anything but forget about magic jack and move on.

If the magicjack arrives I'll post a reply here then a review elsewhere. I do have and use GrandCentral so this would have been fun to try. But I value the loss or gain of $50.85 a hell of a lot less than thinking or worrying or grinding my teeth at trying to resolve the issue.

I am unable to complete calls to two of my main suppliers in the local area -- American Sling in Hurst TX and MSC Industrial supply in Ft. Worth TX (and never mind my MILF gf across the street).

I cannot fathom why I get the weird rings followed by even more strange sounds. The only sound I want to hear is a voice asking "how may I direct your call" (or "when can you come over").

Geez, what a waste of time and money.

Re: My review of MagicJack

I just received my MJ today, and have placed 8 phone calls with it. Of those 8, 1 failed with a bad connection. Connection was made with breakups though.

I don't have caller id on my landline, and was pleasantly suprised to see it pass on caller id info to my handset. Wife really liked that.

Voicemail sending to my email is pretty cool. Might have potential of getting annoying though.

Call waiting does not work at all for me though. I see a 2nd person calling, but when I try to jump over and talk to that person, it skips and cracks. So we won't use that option, which isn't much of a big deal to us.

FYI for those that wonder. We are on AT&T dsl, 6mb down, 768 up. So I thought that would be able to handle 2 simultaneous calls... but evidently not.

My landline costs $20 a month. If this continues to work as wel as it has, we will be getting rid of that and dsl. Switching to faster speed cable modem.

BEFORE YOU CANCEL YOUR LANDLINE be aware that MJ will not port in your current number, and will not port out their assigned number in the event you want to change. you'll likely lose your directory listing, as well. since you're new to MJ, maybe you could check your ADD/DELETE Programs option in the Control Panel to see if they have added the ability to easily delete their software...

I never received any e-mail from magic jack.
did you check the spam or "bulk" folder?
The e-mail arrived a half-day later and it *was* in the spam folder. E-mail later than the promised one hour, but the MagicJack arrived yesterday.

It works. I may keep it. That's what 30 day trials are all about.

Since I have Autorun and MCN notification turned off for CD-ROM drives, and Autoplay turned off for all drive types and drive letters, I gladly had to double-click the autorun.exe file on the fictitious CD-ROM drive detected by Windows when the MagicJack USB adapter was inserted. The setup process went without a hitch as did registration.

Using the softphone and a headset is made troublesome because the MagicJack software forces wrong choices of analog or digital, front panel or rear jacks, and line-in or mic. It took quite a bit of struggling with the onboard Realtek chipset control panel to rig a workable solution. The default MajicJack choice that could not be changed called for a digital mic, and both the call audio and ringer to come out of the headset earpiece. It's a pretty common chipset on Intel/Asus boards so I may not be the only one with this dilema.

Calls go through OK. It's a real race to use the softphone dialpad as too short an amount of time between keypresses times out and causes a dialing do over. The time taken to glance from the screen to the mouse to a phonebook is all it takes to have to start dialing over.

Plugging in a phone is seamless. That works great. But I'll have access to a mic and headset more often than I'll have a phone and RJ-11 cable in my back pocket. I'm guessing this is best suited for stationary use in the home. A lot of work, tons of work, need done on the softphone for this to be realisticaly used by a road warrior.

I really dislike the creation of a default localhost proxy on port 8888 to pass all WinINet traffic through. No one mentions that. For me that creates both a privacy and security concern. Giving MagicJack access to every site I visit and every password I enter is way over the top when it comes to what should be simple, targeted advertising.

The privacy issue of course includes every call made or received. Potentially, MagicJack can know how many times I watched the Get Smart trailer before I checked Google showtimes the IMDB, and who I called first after I saw it and in which theater Iwent to see it and how I bought the tickets online.

If the public will trade all that information and more for free calls, and settle for a few (OK a lot of) pop-up ads in the softphone, MagicJack is going to make a lot of money. I mean a lot of money. The CLEC tarrifs and the $20 a year is chicken feed. I may not want to use or keep the thing but I sure want to invest in it.

Hello Swanboy I read your review of the MagicJack and opted to try it for myself. However, I believe I to will need to take advantage of the GrandCentral Station option.

Unfortunately, Google now has it and it is invite only.

Would you mind inviting me?

Interesting Info as I got the same internet service although my upload is 512kb.

What phone service you had that was $20? was it with AT&T?

Caution - As per my text chat on Magicjack's website on 7-21-08, it is NOT compatible with XP SP3 or Vista SP2 and they have no idea when they will fix this MAJOR bug. You'd think they would mention that prominently on their website before you order it and have to go thru the trouble to send it back.

BALONEY pure and simple. BTW, VIsta does not have SP2 -- your imagination is far ahead of your thought process. :-)

I have magicJack running under Vista/SP1 and under XP/SP3 without any issue directly connected to running magicJack under Vista/SP1 or XP/SP3. I also know of many others doing the same without issues that are specific to Vista/SP1 and or XP/SP3.

Doesn't the act of "testing" load the MJ software on those test machines? Is there an easy way to uninstall the software from the machines that you were testing on? As the software is, in part, an advertising server that records user internet habits isn't there some jeopardy about spreading it around?

DrStrange @ 21st Jul 01:02PM:
Re: My review of MagicJack

The only thing I see on those machines is the desktop link for MagicJack.

I think all they're doing is recording your calling patterns, not your browsing habits [at least that's what it says in the Service Agreement]. I don't see anything running when MagicJack isn't connected. I don't see any suspicious outbound traffic even when it is running. I run behind software and hardware firewalls, so I would probably notice it in the logs ;-) .

I make part of my living removing malware from computers. I have a serious problem with malware, and I hate 'legitimate' adware almost as much. I don't like that MagicJack doesn't have a transparent uninstall process. If I get some free time in the near future [don't hold your breath], I'll see if I can log what's installed when you connect the MagicJack and think about how it could be properly and transparently uninstalled. What I've seen so far is in the NT user files ([windows drive]:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\mjusbsp\) along with the registry entries you'd expect from a USB device with firmware.

I had a look at the rest of the registry of the machine that's hosting MJ and I don't see anything ominous.

Will do. I read the procedure, and there's more to it than that.

Deleting the vidxxxx keys doesn't work here, and they're not all associated with MagicJack. There are several other keys that should be removed. There's also a process in msconfig that should be removed.

I got rid of MJ on this machine [since I've decided to host it on the fileserver].

Hopefully, others who know a few things about manual, forcible software removal will read and critique this in case I missed something. I'll look for replies in the morning. I don't think these instructions are 'ready for prime time' yet. Consider them an 'alpha release'. This computer seems to have survived the process.

Here's what I thought I had to do to get rid of MJ:

remove ([windows drive]:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\mjusbsp\)
