[HDTV] New HD Channels
Today's Star Ledger has a large ad announcing the new HD channels coming on line as of January 10th, 2008 as well as some other minor lineup changes. :)
CNN
ESPN2
A&E
National Geographic
VS
USA
MY TV
MHD

With no mention of MSG or FSN in HD...very disappointing. I'll stick with FiOS. It's unbelievable that nowhere in central NJ can you get those two channels despite having access to four different video carriers.

So no Discovery Channel HD? I'd rather switch HD Theater for the real channel.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
It is a good addition of HD channels, but not enough to
get me to drop Fios, and have Comcast/Patriot Media as my
main TV provider. I already have all of those channels
except CNN and USA, with Fios or Dish Network. If MSG HD,
FSNY HD, TeamHD for NBA League Pass, and NHL Network HD were added, I might consider Comcast/Patriot Media. I could
live with NBATV games on MOJO rather than a full time
HD channel on Dish Network. I would drop Dish Network, if
Comcast were to add those four channels.
There are persistant rumors that MSG HD and FSNY HD are going to be added to Directv this week.
Fios is supposed to be adding a number of HD channels
in the first quarter of 2008 to get to over 60 HD channels.
I will sit back and wait to see what happens.

I figured that was the case, like TNTHD, etc. The few shows I watch on Discovery claim to be in HD. I'd much rather have that than sunrise Earth...

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
There have been a few shows in HD that I have watched on
Discovery channel. It is a matter of going through the guide and setting your DVR to record the HD shows. I do not have the patienc to watch live. Discovery channel does
occasionally replay the critically acclaimed Planet Earth series in real HD. That show is outstanding, but I have it on Blu ray.

HI Shaffer, by any chance, do you still have this Saturday's Ledger? I was wondering whether these changes were only for Somerset or for other Comcast NJ systems. Thanks!

Same question as Travelfan1 above....but in my case specifically about Comcast of Central NJ. I already recycled out the old newspapers.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
I have the paper. The ad was by Patriot Media, not Comcast. And it would seem the change is for all current Patriot customers.
The other good thing is that almost all the HD channels are being moved to the HD Basic category. (TNTHD, TBSHD, ESPNHD, YES, FSNY, MOJO, UHD, HDT etc) Only 3 HD channels will be in HD Plus - Wealth TV (WTF is that channel all about anyway - so now someone is going to pay money to watch how rich people live??) and some HD Movie channels or something. So no more paying for the HD versions of channels you already pay for in SD.
Also, for all you NFL fans out there, we are getting screwed again. This year, they are actually letting us watch the NFL channel games. After Jan. 10th (Hmm, I guess it won't matter at that point) they are moving the NFL channel under their Digital Sports Package, which costs extra of course. If you pay for that, you will also get the HD equivalent.
I appreciate the extra HD channels, and moving them out of the PLUS package, but I wish Patriot would give us what we really want - FNSNY-HD, MSG-HD and more On Demand movies in HD.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
I think the reason for HDNet and HDNet Movies remaining as premiums is because Comcast doesn't have a contract with them anywhere else but they're stuck with current contract until it expires.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
Fox SportsNY HD is a local regional sports network and
will not be in DSA (Digital Sports Arena). I would
pony up the money for DSA, if HD regional sports networks
and other HD sports networks were offered such as FSNY HD,
MSG HD, NHL Network HD, NBA TV HD, BTN HD, Fuel HD, Speed HD etc. For a long time HD sub, the DSA is basically useless because it does not offer any HD sports networks, except in January, NFL Network and NFL Network HD will be moving to DSA.
Why doesn't Comcast provide all the HD sports channels to the old Patriot Media subs? My neighbors next door in West Windsor have MSG HD and FSNY HD game feeds from Comcast as well as YES HD, CSN Phila HD, CSN MA HD and SNY HD.

Back to the topic:
Just received the notice from PatMedia about a rate increase - right on time.
HD Basic remains free and gets the new channels mentioned earlier. HD Plus drops to $1.99 per month. So all you diehard WealthTV fans won't have to pay much to see how to live the good life.
iN Demand movies increase to $4.99
Digital One-Star Plus HBO increases to $94.45.
Modem rentals and extra digital service goes up $1.

Hound @ 20th Dec 01:36PM:
Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
The green rate increase sheet did not mention digital sports arena, hd set top boxes or hd dvrs? I like that
HD plus was dropped from 9.99 to 1.99 and it is paid only
once, free on additional TV sets. It is about time that
change was made. I also like that many of the HD channels
were moved into HD basic for free. Keeping with Comcast's
policy that they do not charge for HD. Which is good.
Just want the old Pat Media subs to get MSG HD and FSNY HD
like all the other Comcast subs, and now Directv subs.

I just got the letter too. I am able to catch the free HD Basic channels for NBC, FOX, CBS and ABC on my HDTV set (Samsung FP-T5084) without an additional box. If I subscribe to HD Plus, can I still get away with not renting their box?

I really hope Patriot/Comcast will keep us awash in HD channels. I surf the HD channels and only when there's nothing to watch do I go back to SD channels.

nope, cable wire straight into the TV. i've tried autoprogramming both as Antenna and as Cable. still nothing. it may be my imagination, but i think "My9" or "CW" may have changed from 90.something to 101.something. that's the only change i can see, though.

That behavior is common with a QAM tuner for local channels, which are generally also available by off-air antenna. However, you won't be able to get the encrypted channels without a STB or CableCard.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
I've noticed the following channels available on QAM. I would appreciate anybody posting other items, as this is extremely slow to do on my TV.
2-1, 4-1, 5-1, 7-1 are as expected the HD versions of the broadcast channels. There's also a 7-2. WNBC weather is on 91-8 (should be 4-2).
Channel 9 HD (My 9 or WWOR) is on 101-3
Channel 11 HD (CW11) is on 94-1
Channel 13 HD (WNET) is on 85-2
I have found other stuff not yet identified on 91-6 through 91-9. I didn't find any of the newly added HD cable channels. Has anybody else found anything?

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
2.1 CBS HD
4.1 NBC HD
5.1 FOX HD
7.1 ABC HD
7.2 ABC ++?
0.0 NJN/PBS HD
85.5 other PBS HD
91.something channels appear to be kids/spanish language programming
80.0-80.40? Music channels
94.3 CW HD
101.3 My9 HD
I'm not at my TV right now, so this is all from memory.
Could anyone explain the deal with the HD converter box needed to get the new HD channels? Is it also a PVR, or is that optional? There's no useful info on the patmedia website. Thanks!

You need the box to get the digital plan including the new HD Channels.
The PVR is optional and extra $$$.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
I'm hoping someone else can verify or explain. Back in early January, PatMed came out to the house and did work to clean up our signal. Right after that, the tuner in my DVD/VCR deck found lots of digital channels:
CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC and NJN up at 103-1. It also found 13HD at 101-5 and all the music channels at 100-xx. The 13HD signal has been getting bad until now there is no signal at all. Coincidentally, all the music channels are gone too. Calling PatMed was pointless - the two reps I talked to didn't even know about subs. (One tried to tell me that I was getting this all through the air! Music Now???) Has anyone else had a similar experience>

I think Patriot likes to move these digital channels around periodically to encourage us to rent more cable boxes and DVRs. They won't admit you can watch digital using a QAM tuner (like your VCR apparently has). So that may be what happened to you. Or your signal got weak only in the frequencies used by the digital channels. Try rescanning for channels or try manually tuning to 4.1, 7.1, etc. If that doesn't work, find a static-filled analog channel to complain about. You can hope when they improve the analog signal your digital signal will also be improved.

Re: [HDTV] New HD Channels
Thanks - I appreciate the response and you pretty much confirmed my suspicions. I broke down and ordered the HD box because I just couldn't see trying an antenna in this area and getting spotty results. (We're in the red to violet area.) As it turned out, when the kid came by we finagled every possible hookup and, without an amp, my DVD/VCR deck couldn't latch onto the stations. (I'm thinking that the nice clean feed I was getting may have been compromised a bit with the recent storms.) I've got a splitter that's going into the HD box and an amp into the deck. Now the deck is picking up those stations again so, it seems that I could have just put the amp on myself and passed on the HD DVR but the stations are more reliable from it so... Yep - they just wear you down! But, hey, I got to see the Beagle win in HD - ;-)
