[TWC] Time Warner Navigator
I just thought I'd share this article I found online regarding Time Warner's new Navigator (Mystro) software. Perhaps this can spark some discussion on what you think for the few that have been 'navigated'. Passport appears to be the BEST, and many people are angered of how buggy and slow Navigator runs in comparison. Here's the article:
December 07, 2007
Navigator
It's been a rough year for customers of Time Warner Cable, Kansas City's leading cable provider and possibly the leader in TV-related headaches. Time Warner would like to apologize for that, and we would like to accept its apology -- mostly, though, we hope it's learned its lesson.
The trouble started in January, when Time Warner started upgrading people's set-top boxes with new software to control the on-screen guide, DVR recording and other features. And then there was the ongoing soap opera with the NFL Network, which wasn't Time Warner's fault (in my opinion) but still resulted in a lot of angry customers wondering why they couldn't get the Packers-Cowboys game Nov. 29. In between, a channel-changing snafu irked some fans of A&E (the channel, not the newspaper section).
Above all, though, there was the Navigator debacle. In January I wrote that Time Warner was rolling out a new menuing system for its cable boxes. I quoted a local spokesperson who said Navigator had been developed so we can be more responsive to our customers. Famous last words. Since then, customers have flooded Time Warner's help lines, and my mailbox, with horror stories of sitting down to watch a recorded show, only to discover their DVRs had been wiped clean by the new software. Others were put off by the new menuing system, or driven mad by the three-second response times each time they pressed a button on their remotes, or felt like they were in a car with bad brakes each time they tried to fast-forward through a show ... the list went on.
I have never seen my wife so frustrated with anything, (and) that is an area where she usually counsels me in patience, wrote Chad Colgan of Lenexa. On Aug. 28, Time Warner switched his HD-DVR to Navigator, erasing the entire fourth season of Battlestar Galactica, which they were saving up for one of those viewing marathons that DVR users look forward to.
Two months later, when I checked in again with the Colgans, they were still having trouble. When the DVR works we don't have many complaints, said Colgan, but the 50% of the time it hangs or freezes, like a slow computer, you want to yank it out of the wall. Not only is he considering a switch to Everest, so is his brother-in-law. His cable hasn't been upgraded yet but is spooked by Colgan's tales of woe.
That's the kind of word-of-mouth damage Navigator can do to Time Warner's business, and not just in Kansas City. Its customers in Lincoln, Neb., also got upgraded this year, and the ensuing debacle led the city council there to pass a resolution calling for an investigation. The city's cable advisory board concluded that Time Warner had beta-tested Navigator on the unsuspecting people of Lincoln. (The AVS Forum's Navigator complaint thread scores high in Google search.)
I could go on: Jim Savage, HD-DVR customer, reports that Navigator still gives me headaches as it is still incredibly slow, poor resolution, among other issues, months after it was installed. Rebecca Tasler: We had been so dissatisfied with the new Navigator software that my husband talked a tech into reinstalling the old Passport software system. After that, recorded shows looked horrible, were heavily pixellated what a surprise, my Passport-enabled box is suddenly doing the same thing. So now its not just Navigator.
Scott Simerly, who called my attention to the troubles in Nebraska, called Navigators interface downright prehistoric. I fail to see any improvements in the functionality and the keyword search is horrible in comparison to the old system (Passport).
And yet, the vast majority of people reading this are, according to Time Warner, having no problems at all. That's because they are using set-top boxes that have been tested with Navigator and work fine. The problem, says Damon Shelby Porter of Time Warner Cable Kansas City, is that there are some four dozen different cable box models in use around the area. And while Porter said Navigator has behaved well with 97 percent of them, getting the software to behave with them all has been a bear.
It was tested by our lab, it was tested by our employees in their homes but -- mea culpa -- it's really taken much longer for us to iron out the problems than we had hoped, Porter said. We're very frustrated.
Not as frustrated as I was when I had to return my Navigatored HD-DVR to Time Warner for a replacement. To my relief, the new DVR hasn't been upgraded, because it's a different model and Time Warner has slowed the rollout of Navigator.
There was also that matter of Time Warner moving A&E to Channel 35 without telling anyone (although technically it did warn those of you who read the legal notices in the business section). Porter said a new process was put in place so future channel changes get better publicity.
And another thing at some point, TWCKC pulled the plug on Turner Classic Movies' secondary audio (or SAP) channel. Time Warner hadn't gotten back to me by the time I filed this report, but a reader and I each independently confirmed you can't get the audio description of many TCM films offered on the SAP channel for viewers with visual disabilities. That feature should be available to everyone with cable, set-top box or not, and needs to be restored pronto.
Channels changing: On Jan. 1 Court TV, best known for launching Nancy Grace's career and for its gavel-to-gavel coverage of headline-grabbing trials, will become truTV (small t). Trials will still air during the day, but the channel's new owners -- what do you know, Time Warner again! -- will expand the evening lineup to include other types of mayhem besides criminal. Among its new series are Sky Racers, which will follow TV news choppers; and One False Move, focusing on people whose jobs or adventures take them to the edge of death.
Discovery is also rebooting two of its digital-tier channels in January. Discovery Times, which was launched in 2003 as a joint venture with the New York Times, petered out after three years. It's been quietly rebuilt around in-depth documentaries, and now the channel will be known as Investigation Discovery.
Planet Green is the new name of Discovery Home & Leisure, focusing on eco-friendly programming. You may have already heard of one program it's launching in 2008, Greensburg Eco-Town, which will document efforts in tornado-devastated Greensburg, Kan., to rebuild using environmentally friendly materials.
Meanwhile, another year has passed without a single international news channel being added to Time Warner's -- or Comcast's, or Everest's -- digital tiers. Al Jazeera, BBC World and France 24 are all there for the taking. This lack of public responsibility in a post-9/11 era is disheartening.

I can't say much for Navigator as I have not used it, however as far as losing all the DVR recordings, I don't think this is navigators fault. When any cable company does a software update/upgrade, don't you lose all recordings in the process?

This really pisses me off. 3 perfectly good news channels that almost no one carries. To me, they are better than what is offered at the moment. No reason why at least BBC World should be on our lineups (Cablevision carries it).

Is there not a single TWC executive that uses their DVR and realizes what a piece of junk it is and says we can do better?
The fact that you cannot save the location of partially watched programs is just embarrassing.

I bought two tivos and I'm very happy. I still have one passport DVR that I hope they don't think of messing with on me or I'll dump that one too...

Quicker?? TWC started rolling out Mystro like a year ago and Mystro still sucks really bad! Quicker ha ha!
TWC should have copied all the features that Passport Echo has and add new ones. Having Mystro as the NEWEST software is really frustrating!

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Let me clarify here:
Currently, Aptiv digital makes Passport. When ever TWC wanted to launch a new feature, such as caller ID on tv, Start over, etc., We had to go to Aptiv and have them develop it for us. That takes time and money.
TWC decided some time ago to develop there own guide software, called Mystro. Its developed in house, meaning we don't have to pay Aptiv for development and licensing. TWC couldn't just use Passport as a code base since thats copyright infringement. Mystro is a ground up rebuild of the guide, hence there is the tweaking and bug issues they are running into now.
Trust me, its come FAR since it went into employee testing in our division. Was it ready to be launched to the general public? IMHO No, but i don't get to voice an opinion on those kind of decisions :(

There is NO EXCUSE for any DVR today not to remember the location of a partially watched program. The reason is simple, Time Warner does not want to pay to have this "feature" added. Everything TWC does is to maximize their profits.

I just went through the Mystro experience. My HDDRV failed so I was given a replacement unit with the Mystro software. I immediately noticed delayed channel changing and a definite degradation in image quality on both the HD and non HD channels. A tech came on-site and tested the signal levels and informed me there is nothing wrong (other than the new software). He instructed me to call for another service call and specifically request a replacement with the older Passport software. Luckily, they are still available in my area. I don't look forward to the day when I'm forced to use the Mystro software Maybe by then they'll have their act together??? (I'm not holding my breath).

Perhaps your HD-DVR is only set to output 480i or 480p.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
We have the CallerID onscreen and there's lots of bugs with it still. It started out as a nice, readable, piece of information... I really liked it. Then the system spontaneously "reinitialized" itself and the display went to an unreadable postage stamp size. We called to report it... they said it was a "software problem" and that it should be corrected soon. Okay, I'm a pretty patient guy so I waited, and waited, and waited... finally, after several weeks the display returned to a nice readable piece of data. Yesterday, I turned the TV on and received a phone call... no display at all, and the call history had vanished. Admittedly a minor annoyance, but the display was back to its "postage stamp" format. I called and reported it today and was told that they are aware of the problem, and that it should be ironed out by the end of the month.
I really like the feature... no need to try to get up and check the callerID on the phone! It does have a a choice for display duration... up to 30 seconds, I think... in increments of 5 seconds. But I sure wish they'd get it straightened out. I was told that by the time it all shakes out in the wash, the size and postion of the display will be "user selectable". That's what I was told, anyway. So don't be in too much of a hurry to get it. Wait 'til they get it right first.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Apart from "me too" synndrome, a friend of mine told me they had their TV hooked up by a "home theatre guy", and they (somehow) installed a different on screen guide/navigator rather than the one TWC offers.
Is that possible? With Navigator/Mystro now, everytime I press "guide" on the remote, I get an annoying "Please wait... data loading..." message. With the old system, that only happened if I scrolled forward to see what was on TV two weeks from now.
The Caller Id on TV is cute... does it work for Call Waiting Caller ID too? (I haven't had an opportunity to try that).
But, I'd rather have, or in addition to, a TCP/IP message sent to my computer... then I could screen calls by my own software. (I do that now with an old analog modem that would otherwise serve as a door-stop, or paper-weight. :-)
The FSK signal sent for "Voice Message waiting" would also be nice to get via TCP/IP to my computer...
My computer would see the message as originating from 192.168.100.1 (which I would know is my cable modem)

Ugh.. this new Mystro software is driving me crazy. We have 2 DVRs but only one has been upgraded to Mystro. I find it hard to believe that TW "upgrades" us to something with less features than what we had before. Is there a way we can voice our frustration so that they will fix these issues?
Here are some of the things that we're missing:
1) When fast forwarding and rewinding, it no longer displays the time (yes I know there is a time on the left hand side, but not being over the fast forward bar, it makes it difficult to know the time).
2) When fast forwarding and rewinding, you can no longer use the left and right arrow to move to the next 15 minute interval marker. We used this all the time to really get through shows, now we have to wait for fast forward to work. (this appears to be solved by holding down FF or RW for a few seconds... it will jump ahead or back in 15 min increments).
3) When in Guide mode and clicking favorites, the channel actually changes and the guide goes away instead of the guide jumping to the next favorite channel and staying in guide mode.
4) Day +/- buttons do not seem to work; only get the "loading data" message.
5) Menus are very slow.
The only good thing thus far is that the side bars on non-HD channels are now black instead of gray.
Are these problems driving anyone else crazy?

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
All in all, the upgrade went smoothly. There are a "few" feature improvements with Mystro, however there are some losses also. There really isn't anything significant that improves usage, and the increase complexity isn't worth it. Namely, the recording conflict. Unless you constantly observe, you'll miss shows that otherwise would have been recorded. The other pain, is the "A" guide. The sub- banners have nothing other than marketable "pay events", News/Weather, Sports, and Kids. A real waste.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Im in Columbus Ohio and have had Mystro for a few weeks now. It's been nothing but trouble.
I have 7 cable boxes, 1 HD DVR and 6 Standard Def (Old Pionneer and SA boxes). They reboot constantly. They are so slow I avoid the guide like crazy. Using the cable box remote I have a 50% chance to change channels correctly.
My TiVo's (I have 3) cannot change channels reliably at all. I've re-wired to bypass the cable boxes but of course can now only record the analog stations.
I've called customer service and requested newer boxes that hopefully have more memory and faster CPU's and can handle Mystro, but was told NO. I was told many people are having this problem and "engineers are looking into it".
I've been reading posts in forums all over the net that go back over a year about how Mystro had nothing but problems and still they are rolling it out to people.
I've taken to sending my tale to anyone at Time Warner I can find. I can't switch to Direct TV or Dish because of the trees around my house. Time Warner is the ONLY game in town for me. WOW doesn't do my street and AT&T u-verse isn't here yet.
It's very frustrating to pay $130+/month for horrible service, to basically be yet another test subject for something they know is awful.
Until this I was a happy Time Warner customer...now...not so much.

He got so annoyed he took the DVR back to the local office and canceled his cable service. They pushed through the Mystro software on my 8300HD box yesterday. I had no notification of this change.
When I got home late last night I noticed that one of the programs I record each day at a specific time (which is rebroadcast several times during the day) had not only recorded several instances of the program but kicked off a couple of shows I recorded since there was so little space left. (Passport was set to record just one instance of the show, at a specific time, so that it would not interfere with two other shows recorded during prime time).
Worse is the fact that the software will only allow a record time at the shows first showing, not at the time the user desires.
I am finding the negative ads by Direct TV about cable to be more true with each passing day.

The Moxi rolled out in Charter and ex-Adelphia areas has a HD menu, which pulls up a list of all HD channels and saved HD programs on the DVR.
The Moxi also has the ability to hide unwanted channels on the channel lists, so if you didn't want to see the SD versions of the channels you could hide them.

Also with mystro, to get all the HD channels, all you have to do is hit the yellow triangle A button, and hit the left arrow once, one of the menu items is "HTDV Now" and it lists every HD channel and whats on it, pick one, hit select and you tune right to it.
@ K Patterson:
Simply because they have to, TWC needs Mystro completely launched in an area before they can roll out SDV. The good news is that every bug we have been reporting has been, albet slowly, getting fixed. Things have gotten alot better since they FIRST Rolled it out.

Perhaps Aptiv wanted too much $$ for the upgrade license, so TWC figured they would move all programming in house and not have to go through a third party vendor every time there's an issue, upgrade, etc...?
I would be curious to know what is the latest build of Passport that Aptiv put out... and does it support SDV? I know the latest version of PassportDCT (For the Motorola's) is 3.0. What gets me is that TWC wants $80 to install CableCards in a new Tivo when I could just as easily do it and get rid of Mystro. This is a monopoly! I'm forced to TWC because the satellite guys can't do multiple HD-DVRs without real pain: in the pocketbook and in the arse. Did anyone notice that Mystro was written in Java? That is one reason it is slow as molasses when starting up. Poor coding would explain the reboots and auto-negotiation of resolution problems. The other issues are because the software was made from scratch. I loved the comment made by someone defending this software. "Since it wasn't developed in house we had less control." Why not buy the rights? And even it it was brought in house it would probably be farmed out to an Indian company. This PoS better be worth all the angst. And by the way, if you complain enough you can get upwards of $400 in credits.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Mystro sucks in comparison to Passport.
Mystro searching by show title is much more difficult and time consuming. Mystro does not have a VCR timer..only a reminder timer, so if you don't fork over for DVR you are mostly out of luck. Mystro tells you that 0n-demand services are often unavailable when you try to start them. Mystro has annoying "loading data" messages that pop up and take you to black screen instead of allowing you to search while maintaining your current program. Mystro does not tell you exactly how long a movie is..it just tells you the length of the window until the next title. That's useless, I can see the window for myself.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
This new Mystro software being forced on TWC customers is completely unacceptable.
It is absolutely pathetic and worthless, and anyone even trying to defend this change is either a payed flunky or a complete moron.
The loss of functionality is honestly embarrassing:
1. Can no longer scroll through favorites while in the guide. Using the Favorites button while in the guide now take you out of the guide and actually CHANGES THE CHANNEL! Unacceptable.
2. Can no longer change screen size between zoom, stretch, and normal on the fly with a single button on the remote. Now must enter the cumbersome menu and go through several steps to do this.
3. Loss of functionality of the user guide. Can no longer simply search by title displayed, now must type in the title, and select from a list. Ridiculous.
4. Recorded shows are being skipped, not recorded, and not even marked to be recorded. When I designate to record every instance of a show on every channel, it should be recorded, unless I am trying to use more than the two tuners at once, which I am not. This renders the DVR next to useless.
5. Cannot customize the ugly and hard-to-read guide color.
I have an eye condition which makes some colors hard to look at, and the royal blue retina-burning color is a nightmare.
6. Random reboots and error messages. Slow channel changing, laggy performance, the list goes on and on and on and on! Unbelievable.
I do not give a good goddam why the software was changed. That is not important to me as a customer. What is important to me is that I am now paying for something which is next to worthless.
Either switch back to the original software, upgrade and correct the issues with the current software, get new more functional software, or expect start losing many customers very soon.

You've made a terrible mistake with MYSTRO, and you know about it last year.
It takes forever to change channels, so I guess TW doesn't care about those of us who like to channel surf. MYSTRO completely takes all the pleasure out of surfing.

I'm in Kettering and I can't stand the thing either. It just rebooted on me a few minutes ago when I tried to view the list of recorded programs.
The pamphlet they mailed about the upgrade says it has two weeks of program listings. So far, I haven't been able to view more than six days into the future. And when I do go forward, it takes about fifteen seconds to load the data each time I hit the day forward button. Oh, and can't forget how the video/audio feed cuts out while you do this.
I also noticed the screensaver that appears when you pause a program does not work with HD tvs. It just makes a black 4:3 box in the middle with a bouncing "press play to continue" while the "sidebars" continue to display the paused image. Go go, burn in!

I-Guide on Motorola boxes do the same thing. I have a feeling that currently deployed cable boxes cannot generate menus in HD resolution. If they could, not only would the menus look sharper on HDTV's, but the graphics would fill the screen 16:9 including the screen saver.

It just makes no sense to me. You'd think that they would make the software work properly with HD boxes. It still puts sidebars on the guide (why not fullscreen and show us an extra half hour of listings). At least it no longer puts up the sidebars when you hit info a second time. But too bad they get their guide info from TV Guide now and it's only half as informative as what we had before. At least the old screensaver had the pulsing gray bars on the sides.

My understanding has been that this is a hardware issue. The extra width for the graphics isn't "enabled" until you get to the SA8550 box. You'd have to ask Scientific Atlanta why their previous HD boxes didn't have a larger graphics area. Maybe a lowest common denominator implementation?

I'm going to try not paying for Navigator
When I send in my payment this month, I'm going to withhold payment for the "DVR function" since, IMHO, the DVR is not functioning. I'm going to include a note that goes something like this:
Dear Time Warner:
You'll notice that the payment I've made this month is for $9.95 less than what you billed. That's because I withheld the $9.95 part of my bill that's for "DVR FUNCTION". I am not paying for "DVR FUNCTION" because my DVR is no longer functional after being "upgraded" to Navigator. Your support agent suggested that I be patient while Time Warner programmers fix all the problems with the Navigator software. $9.95 is a small price for Time Warner to pay for my patience.
I'll continue to withhold the $9.95 every month until the Navigator software gets all or most of the functions the Passport software had and is as reliable as the Passport software was.

v2.4.4-14 is the version for MDN. ODN hasn't yet gotten the new update. Samsung is also a development partner. This means that Samsung will be making the next gen cable boxes. Samsung has a nice DVR called the SMT-H3090. This DVR will replace the SA/Cisco and Motorola boxes. This requires a headend that uses the SA HDC boxes. Motorola headends might need OCAP in order to use the new Samsung box. Some areas are already getting the new Samsung box but not the Samsung DVR.

The show grid is a darker blue color. Grid highlights are in a yellowish color. Even the menus have that yellow highlights. The blue pane in the menus is now a darker blue. VOD app has been changed. It looks a bit different. So far they haven't really done much bug fix wise but it's really a new look for MDN.
ODN aka HDC boxes have yet to get this new look. My ODN boxes are at 2.4.10_11 unless there is some secret version that hasn't came out. Bob Barlow mentioned the guide would be updated but he didn't mention ODN though. No widescreen but the current boxes can't do that yet. Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
There are 2 versions of Navigator. MDN and ODN
ODN is OCAP digital Navigator. OCAP means Open Cable Access Platform. OCAP is also known as tru2way. ODN works on the Scientific Atlanta HDC boxes but can work on the new Samsung boxes. tru2way/OCAP use java which isn't really designed for some of the current boxes. One cool thing about ODN is that it doesn't have to be on a box. Someday you will be able to buy a TV and then have ODN installed on it. ODN has gotten a recent update in San Diego to 3.1.0_7.
MDN is the guide for older SA boxes and Pioneers or any older SA compatible box. It's faster and but has maybe one or 2 features ODN might not have but there are cases of ODN having more features than MDN. It's written in C which is much faster than Java. Just make sure your running MDN on a newer legacy box since it can be very bad with an older Pioneer I used to have. On a 3250HD it's not that bad. Also NYC's HD VOD requires ODN to run but MDN could easily run that channel. TWC has yet to deploy MDN but has been deployed in Passport areas like mine.
Just an analysis on the 2 guides.

And on another forum we have been debating this and I found a particular service on my 8300HDC which reads something similar to SARA_TO_ODN so it's assumed they are at least working on the specific change in some fashion. FWIW, the SARA boxes in our area are largely from the Adelphia and Comcast areas that were 'acquired' years ago. The legacy TWC areas have always been Passport/SA equipment.

Navigator has gotten much better. It still has it's little problems. They are working on Keyword search and remote scheduling. Maybe they will add some cool new apps. The new Samsung HD-DVR's can't come fast enough. Those boxes have much better hardware than those 8300/8240HDC's. I know some of you like the HDC boxes but those fans are using SARA and not Navigator. My HDC is the one probably causing all these issues. SARA could use a better interface, and a good search function. Now if TWC makes something that will rival a 2009 version of Passport then Navigator might actually be worth it. Right now we are at a 2006 version of Passport feature wise with some unique features.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
One thing that has to be realized with the HDC boxes is that with the software being Java based, it'll take whatever cpu and memory resources you can give it, chew it up, and spit it back out. Not sure of the cpu power, but the 8300HDC only has like 128MB of ram and it's the top dog of OCAP boxes currently outside of the new Samsung units (Which come with 400MHZ dual core RISC processors and 384MB ram standard upgradable to 512MB). Navigator isn't the direct culprit (though could use some optimising), but rather SA/Cisco for underpowering these boxes so much.
Try out an older non-OCAP box that has Navigator MDN loaded. Particular models being the 8000, 8300, 8000HD, 8300HD, and some others. These have it running the Navigator code built for the specific hardware and not generic cross-platform like OCAP. On those boxes, Navigator runs particularly well and leaps and bounds ahead of Navigator ODN. So it's not really the software at fault here.

Vchat20,
I totally agree. MDN is better since it's optimized for the LCM boxes. The LCM boxes are those old POS SA and Pioneer boxes. The 8300HDC has 2 CPU's. Both of them are Sparc variants running at 250 MHz. MDN is also written in C and not Java. The thing with MDN is that it uses the same techniques on a Pioneer BD-V1100 as does a 8300HD. My 8300HDC is much faster in the guide when you compare it to my 3250HDC. The 8300HDC is basically a hackjob. It's a box that was rushed into market for the July seperable security ban. However MDN on an old Pioneer box is not a fun experience.

I can't remember exactly, as I didn't really see a reason to KEEP the letter, I just kept the leaflet, that the letter stated that the rollout would happen "over a time period of a number of weeks" or something like that.
At the same time, they seemed to stop updating the Programming Alerts (nothing new since January) and the HD Channel additions still say "Available in January in these cities" where in the past they were updated pretty regulary.
It would almost seems TWC has been "gagged" as of somewhere in January, and aren't providing anyone with updates.

I'm definitely one of those people who prefer Passport. I'm a non-DVR user and I agree with previous posters about the missing features in ODN compared with Passport. FYI I'm in the Los Angeles - South Bay area and ODN is at version 2.4.10_11 on my brand new (mfg 1/2009) SA 4250HDC.
My review of Navigator: »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···=1130814
To previous posters having frequent reboots, I feel your pain. After exchanging at least eight STBs (mostly using Passport) with the same symptom this latest one seems stable. IMO the TWC 'repair' staff can't or isn't allowed to fix STBs properly.
Stockholders should be incensed at top management incompetence - TWC reportedly has spent (tens? hundreds? of) millions of $$ to develop Navigator in house when they could have *bought* Aptiv as Gemstar (now part of Macrovision) did for a measly $16 million.

Hello,
I recently moved and subscribed to Time Warner Cable.
I was deeply disappointed to receive a cable box that has NO VCR Timer.
Time Warner boasts that they have given me an HDCable BOX. Quite frankly I find this disgusting.
My friend is an older Time Warner customer and has her cable box with a VCR Timer.
From what I understand its an older version of the "Scientific Atlanta" Cable BOx.
Then Time Warner proceeds to tell me , that I have to go in person to ask for that older box and then on top of that, will be billed $5 extra dollars a month. What sense does that make when its an older box to begin with. There was all this talk about being unable to swap out the box without having the price go higher.
This is absolutely ridiculous. All I want is to be able to tape shows using my VCR, and currently TIME Warner Cable does not allow you to do so.
Customers need to stand up to this idiot-ocracy!!!
And yes, I do hate that new menu. Wish I could customize the colors.

Just leave the box on the channel you want to record at the time you want to record and connect the outputs to your VCR. It'll record that fine.
Time Warner isn't preventing you from recording with your VCR.

You know, I want to play my records too but my CD player won't accept disks that large.
If you want to use an ANALOG recording device, hook it up to ANALOG television. If you want to record DIGITAL television, use a DIGITAL Video Recorder.
It is possible to hook up both analog and digital TV by the way. Split the cable that comes out of the wall, and use one end to go to the VCR, and the other end to go to the Digital Tuner. You can hookup the VCR to your TV with the yellow/red/white RCA jacks, and off you go: Record any channel you like on the analog side, and still be able to watch all your digital channels.
A DVR however, is by far the best solution.

TWC Ohio says new features are coming out later this year like longer program listings, and remote DVR management. I would like to see full keyword search. Follow Me TV is also a new feature to come out for Navigator. Only the ODN software will have it. You must have MoCA enabled set top boxes in order to have it. If you have an older legacy box you will have to get new ones that have it. The Samsung SMT-H3090 will have a 320 GB HDD and support MoCA for Follow Me TV. Follow Me TV is TWC's name for a multiroom DVR. The Samsung box can support DLNA so you could some day be able to stream contents to any DLNA uPnP compatible device.

TWC taps Motorola for multi-room DVR
By Brian Santo
CedMagazine.com - April 01, 2009
Time Warner Cable is developing a multi-room digital video recorder solution using Motorolas tru2way set-top software.
Motorola developed the system, called Follow Me TV (FMTV), on its DCX3400-M and DCX3200-M tru2way-enabled set-tops.
TWC subscribers will be able to access content stored on their DVRs on any other tru2way-enabled set-top in their homes. Subscribers will have full DVR functionality on each TV screen. Customers will also be able to program their DVRs from a remote device.
FMTV supports multiple home networking technologies, including HPNA, HomePlug, and Wi-Fi (802.11n). TWC expects to use MoCA (Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance) for the home network.
Dish and AT&T have both demonstrated that multi-room DVR capability is an attractive feature, and cable companies are beginning to respond.
The largest MSOs are committed to spreading tru2way anyway, so it makes sense to peg new features on the effort. Cox, for example, is coupling the introduction of its new program guide with its formal rollout of tru2way capability. TWC is doing the same thing by piggybacking multi-room DVR on its tru2way rollout.
The announcement with TWC focuses largely on multi-room DVR, but FMTV is designed to not only distribute video from a DVR to ancillary TVs in the home, but to also connect PCs, gateways, home media servers and other electronics so that they can all share media. Content-sharing protocols supported include Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA).
Other whole-home media applications supported by FMTV include:
On any connected television, watch recordings stored on any connected DVR set-top
Pause, fast-forward, or rewind recorded TV programs from any connected set-top
Schedule recordings, set parental controls, and manage personal program choices with an easy-to-use interface
Bookmark a place in a recorded program at the touch of a button, then resume watching the program in the other room without interruption
Connect third-party devices such as network-attached storage platforms and access this content from any room in the house
Share content from digital cameras, camcorders, MP3 players, computers and mobile phones throughout the home with an easy-to-use interface
Program a Motorola DVR remotely from a Motorola mobile phone.
The only thing Time Warner Cable said about the timing of the introduction of the service was that it would be later this year.
Louis Williamson, TWC senior fellow of engineering, said: This is the first OpenCable tru2way system with home network extensions. It is fully interoperable, providing Time Warner Cable more flexibility and choice in determining what equipment is made available in its footprint.

NYC is finally getting rid of Passport on May 31st. They will replace Passport with MDN. MDN is similar to ODN but is written in C and made for the legacy boxes. TWC NYC will probably get new Samsung boxes. The current Samsung box the SMT-H3050 will be replaced by the 3260 HD-STB. The 8300/8240 series will probably be replaced by the 3270 HD-DVR. Though they could deploy the SMT-H3090. The 32xx boxes are newer than the 3050 and the 3090. How new, could be anyone's guess.
Also when Cisco purchased SA the QC started to drop down. So if you had a bad HDC box then it's understandable why. It's all due to the lack of good QC. Some people do like their HDC boxes but they are probably lucky or running that outdated guide called SARA.

Except the TWC Samsung boxes will run ODN not that much faster than the 8300HDC. The Samsung DVR boxes will stretch the 4:3 guide to 16:9 instead of a true HD guide. The SMT-H3090 has a Broadcom 7405 CPU which is quite good. It's going to be better later on. TWC is also going to deploy the Motorola DCX. The Samsung SMT-H3050 is about as powerful as a 4250HDC which is ok. The Samsung 3260 should be much better. The SMT-H3090 is only in a few divisions. Some divsions are switching over to the 3270 HD-DVR which is newer than the SMT-H3090. It will have the same old stretched ODN but might have newer features. Who knows what TWC will deploy. Our division is slated to get Samsung boxes by next month. I would say May and not late April.

It might be a couple a months. San Diego might be ready to deploy them. TWC is planning on deploying MDN in NYC for the non cablecard boxes like the 8300HD. Passport is finally being replaced by MDN. This might not be so bad. You do lose some features like manual recording and keyword search, but it's much faster than ODN. It's written in C and not Java. It doesn't however, run well on old Pioneer/SA SD boxes. Those boxes make it look like DOS and are hard to use. I had a Pioneer BD-V1100 and I later upgraded it to a 3250HD.

Sounds like a signal issue or TWC SoCal is being terrible again. Maybe the supervisor will have to check it out. Who knows really. Navigator aka Mystro does run better on newer boxes. Down in San Diego, new boxes are being tested. TWC SoCal might go all Moto or Samsung. Moto areas will go with the DCX with tru2way iGuide and the Cisco/SA areas will use Samsung boxes with ODN. The OCAP/tru2way version can run on TV's which is nice. It's still a problematic software. It's getting better but a slow pace. The Moto boxes can run on the Cisco/SA boxes since it's a tru2way/OCAP box. The Samsung boxes are OCAP/tru2way compliant.

You got that right! Even with the new ODN release (3.1.1_3) my brand new 4250HDC is hard locking (power recycle reqd) with increasing frequency :( . I've had many digital cable STBs and most have reboot problems right out of the bag - TWC can't or won't repair them.

Check out the H3090 thread on the last page. I've had ODN 3.1.1_3 with minimal issues on a 4250HDC. My 8300HDC has had some issues. The Samsung 3260 HD-STB is very promising. Nothing has been leaked to the press about it. Same with the 3270. Nobody has posted any concrete info. All I know about the 3270 is that it's black, lighter than the 8300HDC, and is newer than the 3090. ODN is now stretched to fill the screen for some reason. Don't know why even though the BCM chip is capable of doing HD graphics. So yeah go check it out. There will be alternatives to SA boxes.
TWC deployed over 300,000 tru2way boxes. Infact, TWC purchases around 2 million boxes a year. Our division deployed Pioneer boxes and were a Cisco/SA area. I can't wait for the new Samsung 32xx with the 320 GB HDD.

When it's loading, it skips the second box onscreen, and continues loading. Once it comes up, the guide isn't accessible, there's no show or channel info in the bottom bar, AND it won't access any channels past 157, so no more HD for me! I've tried unplugging it twice, and nothing changes.

They are already better than SARA which even the POS versions of Navigator already bet SARA by a million miles. The only thing SARA had was stability and thats about it. Keyword search is a high priority feature wise so those complaints of a lack of keyword search. Time will tell whether they get to Passports level but I think they will.

If you have a SA 2000-3100, any Pioneer box, or a SA 8000 DVR then you should probably swap it for a new one since those boxes aren't that good with Navigator. A box like the 3250HD or the 8300HD runs quite well with Navigator provided you have decent cable wiring. Navigator isn't as tolerant to cable wiring as Passport is.

It's not a DVR by the way. Model number is SMT-H3260 and it's made by Samsung. Still has a few bugs here and there but it's pretty decent. Enjoy!

It's definitely bigger than my SA 4250HDC. It's slightly bigger than my SA 3250HD. This box is newer than the current Samsung boxes that are already in the field. Uses the same motherboard as the 3270 HD-DVR but it doesn't have a eSATA port. There is a SATA port on the mobo though it's probably been disabled completely. It's basically a stripped down DVR. It's a nice box. TWC needs to release a new version of ODN so it can fix the bugs.

I recently received the "The New Time Warner Navigator" info packet in the mail. I have a SA 3250HD box. You said that this box was acceptable for the new Navigator, right?
Would I see an improvement in performance with the SMT-H3260 over the SA 3250HD? If and when it becomes available in my area, that is.
Thanks for all of you input in these threads.

Yes the 3250HD is a nice box for MDN. It's fairly decent though my division deployed an older version which has bugs. I've had one for over 3 years until I got a SMT-H3260. The 3260 isn't even out yet but I don't know when NYC will get it. The Samsung 3260 is a fast box but still has the please wait when browsing the guide. They do have older SMT-H3050 boxes. Got home today to the new Navigator.
It's a little slower than Passport, but not very much. Not a big deal really. The one thing I don't like about it is the way the Guide and Favorites buttons work.
In Passport, you could open the Guide and use the Favorites button to skip through the Favorite Channels while staying in the Guide.
In Navigator, if you're in the Guide and press the Favorites button, it kicks you out of the Guide and changes the channel to the next Favorite.
And "Start Over" seems like a cool feature in Navigator.
Other than that, they're about the same.

TWC Desert Cities subscribers should have a pre recorded call saying that there is going to be an update on Late Monday/Early Tuesday. This update might affect service. In reality they're going to push a new software update to all the cable boxes. I think they're going to deploy the latest MDN version. No word if San Diego is going to get it though I think they will. San Diego likes to update their software on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our division is still on MDN 2.4.4-14 but their ODN version is 3.1.1_3 which is a fairly new version of ODN. We also tested ODN 3.1.0_7 and 3.1.0_11.

I live in Bay Ridge and my SA Explorer 8300HD DVR box got the update during the day yesterday (Tuesday). So far it seems to be running very well, I haven't had any freezes these past two days, whereas they used to be frequent. Also switching between Normal, Stretch and Zoom no longer brings up the black bar that you have to exit out of, so it's much easier and less distracting, and Stretch seems to be the first option, whereas Zoom was before. The menus seem to be a little slower than before, but nothing annoying, and when entering and exiting the menu, it's like a quick fade in and out effect. Overall, Navigator seems like a very good improvement to me.

Example: I was looking for "Doctor Who" episodes (I am searching today 7/20. Guide goes to 7/26) Typing in Doctor Who, it indicates 1 episode on the 7/24 (on hdsyfy and syfy). If you go to the guide and go to the BBC channel (ch106) on 7/26 (sunday) there are two episodes of Doctor Who are scheduled. Can someone explain?
2ndly, if the episode is on at 8pm the episode is "new" but if the same episode is aired again, it should not be "new" yet it is, confusing the DVR.
I really wished they put some thought in this.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
You can't avoid this update. Once it's loaded on to the headend your box will get it. MDN is quite good if your box is fairly recent. HD boxes like the 3250HD, 4250HD, and the 8300HD run it pretty well. The old Pioneer's and the 8000 DVR's don't run it very well. I had a 3250HD running MDN and it wasn't that bad. However, MDN on an old Pioneer is terrible. If you have a Pioneer box or an old SA box then get rid of it. Same with the 8000 DVR. The SA 2000 boxes and the old pioneer suck with Navigator. Slower than molasses and it looks like DOS. Make sure your SNR levels are good. If they aren't then thats a partial reason why Navigator is terrible. Navigator needs good SNR levels and a fast box with a lot of ram.
Now I have a Samsung SMT-H3260 with lots of ram running the OCAP version called ODN. It runs it quite well. It's also the newest non DVR box that TWC has in their inventory.

Still no Keyword search or Manual recording. I hear if you complain about Navigator to a CSR they fill out a form. This form could be feature request or complaints. Even Timers could be added if you needed that feature. The more complaints there are the more likely it's going to be added in a future version. I do know that TWC has licensed some Tivo patents for a few Navigator. I hear that Keyword Search is one of those features that will use one of those patents. It's also their top priority.

I too think it has problems but it'll get there. I've seen even worse. Infact Navigator was originally deployed in Lincoln, NE and that early release was so bad that the franchise board was looking into terminating TWC's franchise agreement with the city. 3 years later it's gotten better but still not quite as good as Passport. ODN has matured quite nicely even on the HDC boxes. Those boxes do suck but they've gotten to the point where it sucks less. The Samsung boxes are hit or miss. The 3050 is a bit buggy while the 3090 also has some bugs. The 3260 HD-STB is great with a few minor issues. Don't know what the 3270 HD-DVR has in store.
I think TWC will eventually get Navigator to Passport levels but it might take more time. I still think TWC should have kept using Passport but thats just my opinion. I think it's too late to switch back to Passport now. Once the Passport areas are done then it's the SARA areas. SARA is an fugly guide but is very stable. It has all the TWC features but it's search feature is terrible. Navigator will rollout on those boxes later this year to early next year.
Who knows what the future holds for TWC.

Why do this "upgrade" to those who have the passport system, which was more than adequate and actually a better system. No one requested this from the customer base. Or at least wait it have the same functionality and features as Passport?
Change for Change sake?

The goal was to have control over their platform. They didn't want to spend money on Passport. Plus if they wanted a special feature they would have to wait for Aptiv to develop it for them. Navigator is all about cost cutting for them. Plus TWC wanted to have 1 interface regardless of box type.

One interface regardless of box type?
Well that would be good for my mother-inlaw.... she is technically challenged and has the motorola box with whatever the software is that comes on it. Whenever she calls, I can never guide her through things because we had passport.
With Navigator, at least we have the same software and I can guide her through things step by step. Now of course.... she hasn't been upgraded yet in Anaheim.
(If she would have been changed, she would have called immediately).

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
The Moto boxes will eventually be ugpraded to Navigator. It's going to take a while. Maybe next year. TWC has yet to upgrade the SARA systems to Navigator. 2/3rd's of all TWC divisions are still using SARA which is probably one of the ugliest IPG's out there. SARA is very stable and doesn't crash and reboot like Navigator. It also supports all the cool TWC features like SDV, Start Over, Look Back, Caller ID on screen, and Quick Clips. In San Diego a northern part of it used to be an Adelphia network running Moto boxes and iGuide. There is a version of Passport for Moto boxes but TWC doesn't use it. San Diego proper however, is using SA and Samsung boxes with Navigator.
As for when Navigator is coming to moto well there was a deal with OpenTV but then that fell through. Then TWC decided to make one anyways regardless of OpenTV.

Yeah it's "in the pipeline", but with TWC that pretty much translates to "sometime between now and much much later".

Keyword Search is supposed to be better than Passport's and TWC might be in talks with Tivo. The Tivo for TWC would probably run on Samsung boxes and maybe HDC boxes though the Samsungs are much better. Definitely not for the legacy boxes like the 8300HD and god forbid the 8000 boxes. The Tivo would be similar to the comcast tivo. It might even be the tru2way version that Comcast might deploy. Then again it's all speculation. TWC might be using Tivo patents for it's keyword search feature.

Absolutely correct!
Passport did NOT do this.
Start watching a live program.
Pause. Pause. Pause.

Schedule recording begins.
BLAM!
Mystro tunes channel to the "scheduled recording"! IN THE FOREGROUND!
Delayed/Paused 'Live' program is lost.
With Passport the "scheduled recording" would start recording IN THE BACKGROUND (using the second tuner)!!!

Of course it will get Navigator but they will probably offer an improved version by then. Navigator is great if you have a high memory legacy box or a Samsung box. The HDC's are ok, but don't run it on any SA box below 3100, 8000/8000HD or any Pioneer box. If you have one of those boxes you probably should swap it for a newer box. Especially the Pioneers. They were great back in 2000-2001 but now in 2009 there are much better boxes that actually run it much better like my Samsung SMT-H3260.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
These are the things I am missing.... maybe someone can help me find the feature for it.
When you turn on the TV at 7:53, and it is left on a channel you usually watch a lot and you wanted to rewind it to the 7:00 hour to start watching the program from the beginning.... all you seem to be able to do with Navigator is set it to the highest rewind speed, and wait the 5 minutes it takes to rewind the live TV back to 7:00.
With passport, you could use the left and right arrow keys to rewind in steps of 15 minutes (clock time) when rewinding. Basically you hit rewind, then hit the left-arrow key once and it jumps to 7:45, twice and it goes back to 7:30, three times 7:15, etc.
Jumping back to the whole hour was done in 15 seconds. This doesn't work any longer with Navigator. Anyone know of a way to solve this?
Another annoyance: When you are browsing the guide at 5:00 PM to see what it on at 8:00, and you decide after some browsing around you want to watch a channel you have currently selected in the guide..... it doesn't give you the "watch channel now" option along with the record options like it did in Passport. I would have to go back to the CURRENT time slot before I can watch the channel.
So far I am NOT liking this navigator software AT ALL!

San Diego seems to have this nice feature where you turn off the box and eventually the HDD will stop spinning. I think this is a PowerTV feature and not a Navigator feature. I think it was brought back with MDN v2.4.6-19 which SoCal and NYC won't be getting. They'll probably wait for v3.0 which will have more bug fixes and new features like Keyword Search. This feature used to be a Passport feature depending on our market. San Diego seems to be an update test market. We seem to get the latest version even though we stuck with MDN v2.4.4-14 for quite some time. We do have ODN v3.1.1_3 though.

i HATE this Navigator thing! God forbid you should move forward a day to see what's on tomorrow (like hmm, wonder what game ESPN is showing tomorrow?). The box crashes and it takes several attempts to get it back up. Even successful attempts take at least five minutes.
The info is also sorely lacking. Used to show cast information for TV shows/movies. Not now. Usually just the title now, if you're lucky, a sentence saying what it's about. For sports listings, it no longer tells you if the game is live or a rebroadcast.
Everything is on a long delay... you wonder if you pushed the button hard enough because nothing happens, then the screen finally comes up then disappears again because you pushed it twice.

-shows in program guide no longer have labels "Live", "Taped", or "Repeat". How are you supposed to know what shows are live?
-DVR no longer automatically prompts you to extend the end time of live programs.
-in the guide the label "NEW" is shown erroneously in many programs that aren't new.
-the guide provide less program "info" than before.
-the duration of the programs are no longer displayed on the first screens in the guide, search, or show list- you have to drill down to see it.
-searching for shows is much less user friendly and takes much more buttons and time. The Find Shows feature puts you back at "A" every time you start a search. I used to be able to press one button ("C") to see every instance of whatever show I was on in the guide. Now I have to keep drilling down, and also uncollapse multiple listings of a program.
-when you hit Pause the banner stays on the screen- it used to disappear. Not good for sports.
-when watching a recorded program the tuner displays the channel of the recorded program instead of the channel you're actually tuned to.
-when using REW or FF it use to show the exact time you're at in the program. Now it's harder to figure out with just the one number on the left of the banner.
-the Instant Reply often doesn't work right the first time you use it on a program- the first time it replays only a couple of seconds. It replays the correct 8 seconds only if you hit it again.
-when you REW at the slowest speed, the program actually jumps AHEAD a number of seconds from where you release the REW button.
-viewing Scheduled Programs used to be one button away. Now you have to scroll to it, hit a button, then hit another button to sort by date or title- not good.
- in the new Start Over feature- I found once you're viewing a program in start over mode you can't even use FF.

AC3 over HDMI only benefits Surround Sound systems. It's the content providers who don't want you FF'ing Start Over. It's supposed to be disabled. The 3090 is nice if you can get a 320 GB version. One of the wires in the original setup was bad after we signed up for phone and in one room there was no digital features but a new wire and one less splitter fixed it. I also got rid of another splitter yesterday and replaced it with a coupler because the TV it was connected to is being moved soon. The software still takes long to boot on Samsung boxes and they're still CableCard boxes. Nice to know about the Samsung DVRs though, better get some of those for the bigger hard drives. I remember the Pioneer boxes. One of mine started sparking and the other had a sign-in problem. They were HORRIBLE. Thank god they were only temporary. I too want the C button search back because you now have to type in the show even if its already highlighted in the guide. They were doing some maintainance today on outside wires without telling anyone so everybody was confused and I got disconnected from an important phone call and the internet for about an hour and a half. What if someone without a cell phone needed to call 911 and couldn't get out of the house? Yes it's a Samsung DVR box. It's newer than the 3090 and the 3260 is actually a non DVR box. The 3260 and 3270 boxes share the same software. San Dieog is going to be the first to get them.

Well it's probably a complicated question to answer. The 3090 is an older unit while the 3270 has newer HW. I guess TWC is committed to both boxes. The 3090 still has pretty decent specs though. The 3270 does have a 320 GB HDD while a few 3090's have it. Most 3090's have the 160 GB drive though some naughty people vandalized their 3090 and put in a 320 GB Seagate Pipeline HD unit that is the OEM 320 GB drive.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm the only one on this forum that has a 3260 box. I've had it since June and it's a nice box. It has a Dual core BCM7405 CPU a ton of RAM, and MPEG-4. The 3090 uses a slower BCM7400 unit. The 3270 is going to be a nice unit indeed. I think NYC will just deploy the 3090 for now. No point in offering the 3270 right now since San Diego is going to be the first to get it. San Diego and Desert Cities never deployed any Samsung boxes so they're first inline for the 32xx boxes.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
The 3270 has had some major bugs which were fixed in the latest release of ODN and the low level OS. ODN is just a program guide not the OS. People are misinformed when they think Navigator is an OS since it's not. It all runs ontop of a low level RTOS. SA boxes use PowerTV, Samsung 3050 boxes run vxWorks while the Samsung 3090, 3260, and 3270 boxes all run Linux. The 3270 bugs were enough to worry the local engineering dept. There might still be some bugs but v4.2.2.2 should fix that. I think NYC is going to deploy ODN v3.1.3_2 someday since v3.1.0_11 is old and outdated. v3.1.1_3 isn't an option since it too is outdated. I also expect the OS and CableCard FW to be updated as well.

Is anyone experiencing, after not watching tv for a while, the channel doesnt buffer its previous hour? I turn on the tv and hit review/rewind for the current channel the converter box has on and it goes black for about 20 seconds and starts to buffer from that point on, not the previous. This never happened with Passport.
Please I appreciate an answer if this is happening with others or it limited to Scientific atlanta HD8300. Thank you.

The 8300HD's running MDN have a defrag mode that's a PowerTV feature. If it randomly turns the HDD while it's off then it's doing a defrag feature. Also in San Diego if you turn off the 8300HD, eventually the HDD will turn off. It might come back on again to defrag it. Maybe next year Navigator will get better. It all takes time. I think VCR timers could be added but it's probably the last thing on their priority list.

TWC has yet to convert the SARA areas to Navigator. They should appreciate the features but not the stability. SARA is stable as it gets but it's fugly beyond belief. Plus it has virtually no good DVR features. Navigator has the features and it supports SDV. Of course TWC wants Navigator to beat or exceed Passport. They still have to add a bunch of Passport features but they might be licensing Tivo patents in order to beat Passport. The keyword search will be awesome from what I've heard. It might be in a future version. Other passport features will make it in future versions of the software.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
said by drivers93 :
I'd like to hear if anyone has been successful in getting these problems fixed:
-shows in program guide no longer have labels "Live", "Taped", or "Repeat". How are you supposed to know what shows are live?
The DVR seems to categorize "Live" and "NEW" as the same thing. If it does not read "NEW," then it's a repeat.
-DVR no longer automatically prompts you to extend the end time of live programs.
Yeah, I miss that.
-in the guide the label "NEW" is shown erroneously in many programs that aren't new.
Only for a week, I believe. The "NEW" label is meant to signify that the episode is in its first week of airing (even if it airs multiple times that week eg: Entourage, Mad Men, Rescue Me, and suchlike). So, if you have prioritized a deep-cable show lower than your major-network shows, your DVR will automatically resolve any recording conflicts if you have more than 2 series-recording shows airing at the same time. The DVR will simply find the next "NEW" listing and record it.
-the guide provide less program "info" than before.
Yep. Annoying.
-the duration of the programs are no longer displayed on the first screens in the guide, search, or show list- you have to drill down to see it.
Hmm. I'm seeing the duration when I hit the INFO button from any of those screens. I know hitting the INFO button is drilling. But it's a very short bit.
Another feature I miss, as well.
-when you hit Pause the banner stays on the screen- it used to disappear. Not good for sports.
My thumb is on a swivel to the EXIT button every time the banner pops up. I don't even have to look where I'm pressing. Great for removing the banner on a PAUSE-screen. But yes, it would be nice if I didn't have to do it every time I advance 1 frame when using the frame-by-frame feature (we just got back, yay!).
-when watching a recorded program the tuner displays the channel of the recorded program instead of the channel you're actually tuned to.
That might actually be more helpful for my purposes.
-when using REW or FF it use to show the exact time you're at in the program. Now it's harder to figure out with just the one number on the left of the banner.
Agreed. And, I also greatly dislike the part where it snaps forward after rewinding. I completely understand snapping back when fast-forwarding because we might speed past the image we're looking for. But, snapping forward when rewinding is asinine ... because unless you purposely rewind farther back than needed, you will miss the image that you are attempting to rewind to. I've had to mentally create a habit where I hit PAUSE when I'm rewinding before I hit PLAY.
-the Instant Replay often doesn't work right the first time you use it on a program- the first time it replays only a couple of seconds. It replays the correct 8 seconds only if you hit it again.
Yeah, I use that button so little, that when I find it, it merely skips me back to the part where I thought to hit it in the first place. I usually have to hit it 3-4 times to get where I'm going. I guess that's better than it skipping too far. But, I wish the length of the time-jump were customizable like the TIVO.
-when you REW at the slowest speed, the program actually jumps AHEAD a number of seconds from where you release the REW button.
Yeah, here I go again. I have no problem complaining about this twice, as it's my 2nd-most annoying "feature." It's asinine. I'm hitting the PAUSE button to hold it in place before I hit the PLAY button. And that works. But, I don't like having to outwit my DVR.
-viewing Scheduled Programs used to be one button away. Now you have to scroll to it, hit a button, then hit another button to sort by date or title- not good.
I'm used to this now. Bugged me at first though.
- in the new Start Over feature- I found once you're viewing a program in start over mode you can't even use FF.
I laugh at the Start Over feature. Should have stayed in the oven until it was done cooking.
And so ... my 1st-most annoying feature is really just my being spoiled by Passport (2 spots ahead of the HDD going to sleep from inactivity):
The SWAP tuners button (yes, I know it's actually the SWAP PiP button, but that's how PiP works -- MULTIPLE TUNERS) no longer allows me to PAUSE while I'm on the opposite tuner. NFL and College Football seasons just aren't the same as the last few years, when I could PAUSE one tuner before commercial-break -- hit SWAP -- and pick up the other tuner where I already left it PAUSEd earlier ... back-and-forth-and-so-on-and-so-forth all day Saturday and all day Sunday. WITHOUT using the enormous PiP window. WITHOUT having to record several hours of HD on both tuners. And WITHOUT the cache disappearing or updating to Live-time whenever I hit the SWAP button.
I really miss that.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
makeway,
tks for all the info in your reply.
It's one thing to have to figure out all programs not marked NEW are repeats, but not specifying which programs are LIVE is ridiculous. That combined with not prompting to extend recording end times for live programs makes it even worse.
I now see the programs' duration in the guide without drilling down (don't think it was there before) but the duration still isn't on the first screen in the Show List or in Find Shows. Bad change from Passport.
Good to learn the EXIT button removes the banner from PAUSE-screen, but I don't see how to get frame-by-frame to work. What buttons do you use? Anyway, frame-by-frame isn't as good if the banner keeps obscuring a portion of the screen.
Some of these issues are not simply inferior functionality compared to Passport- they're just plain defects. TWC has a lot of nerve inflicting Mystro on customers with all these isssues. I don't want to hear this "it's not a bug, it's a feature" crap from TWC. The REPLAY button should work as expected, the REW should work as expected, the GUIDE should include key info on programs, etc.

Frame-by-frame for me, is PAUSE and then FAST-FORWARD (I'm on software version MDN 2.4.whatever). The REWIND button also hops frames ... just not one-at-a-time, but not as big a skip as Passport if I recollect correctly. It's been a while though. I feel like I've had Navigator/Mystro for an eternity. And many of the features have grown on me. But my top 3 irritations really burn me up.

I still have the following problems.....
[*] When it's 5:57, and you are browsing the guide to see what is on at 6:00, and you see a program you like.... you used to just be able to select it, then say "watch this channel now" and the channel flipped. No longer an option, need to go back to the 5 o'clock hour in the guide first, then select the program. Is there some sort of "watch channel now" shortcut I don't know about?
[*] I have had it happen SEVERAL times that when I was watching a baseball game, and a recording from 7:00 to 8:00 on channel XXX ends its recording, and a recording from 8:00 to 9:00 on channel YYY is starting, that for a slight second or so, it needs BOTH channels. It then switches away from my baseball game - of course in a very crucial play - to channel YYY, meaning that I have to switch is back again. Sometimes, I am back about 10 minutes of play in the baseball game because I had rewound a certain play to watch it again, meaning that I just LOST that. Very, very annoying.... this never used to happen with the Passport software I had.
[*] When rewinding, it jumps FORWARD, meaning I have to rewind more then I actually would like to. It is a nice feature to have then your are fast-FORWADING, that it jumps back 30 secs or so when you hit play.... but it is VERY annoying to have ot jump FORWARD when rewinding. Stop that!
[*]Last but not least, I feel TWC has been pushing out a product that IS NOT READY. It has many bugs, missing features, and it has stability problems. Well.... maybe this is the "Vista" to the set-top box world, where Passport was XP, and SARA was 2000. Apperantly they are "fixing things in future versions" but when that is going to happen remains vague.

Well... Another annoyance with the new software is that the programs start about 30 seconds too soon, and end 30 seconds too soon. They will still record a full hour, but I have more commercial time before my program begins, and I often miss the last 15, 20 seconds of a program that sometimes contains the cliffhanger.
I have not set it to record 1 minute over, because I was afraid of the recorder needing the two tuners, but it seems to do that all by itself anyways.....
In general, I am not at all impressed by the software. I have had for about a month or 3 now I would guess, (some time in June), and I keep finding more bugs and more problems.
I'm sure they will be fixed, and features will be added with future releases..... but knowing time warner, it is not going to happen this year, and most likely only a FEW things will be addressed next year.

Greensboro, NC is finally getting Navigator on 10.6.09. This is the beginning of the end of SARA for TWC. It's going to be interesting to see how people will react to it. It's ugly but rock solid.

Those customers should be getting a phone call and a flyer in the mail notifying them about this transition. This will be done by box and by node. HDC and Samsung boxes are done all at once while older SA boxes are done by box type.

Hopefully this will resolve some of the issues I have. I had a ROCK SOLID 8300HD with Passport software.... Now my box reboots on me at least once a week for no particular reason, and I find the box turned off a lot in the morning, while we never ever turn the box off ourselves.
In my humble opinion, the product is still not ready. That, and it is still missing features I used to have.

Bob Barlow the president of TWC San Diego said that the 3270 lacks PIP. It only supports 1 90 minute buffer ala the older Directv DVR. The Samsung DVR's use a BCM chip and so do the Directv units. The Samsung one of course uses a more powerful chip than those DVR's.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
I think the newer versions are getting better. The HDC boxes seem to be rock solid but aren't the snappiest at times. The HDC's still run ODN. The Samsung boxes are much nicer but they too have teething issues. The SMT-H3270 lacks PIP which means you can't do a tuner swap. It only has 1 90 minute buffer. If you want dual live buffers then you should get a Tivo. The ODN boxes don't reboot every week. Even my Samsung boxes don't reboot every week :).

On Movie channels it's very descriptive and tells you who directed the movies. I guess Keyword search is coming someday. This new guide data will come to your division some time in the near future. Oh and on regular TV it now shows the original air date instead of the year it was made. It too is very descriptive. TWC San Diego is a test market for this new guide data.

Parts of tru2way are now open source. Sun has a tru2way development page. It's java which means you can develop apps without needing a cable headend. With tru2way there will be an app store. Whatever you want there's an app for that. I could see a program to check your email, weather, order pizza and even interactive ads. However, the cableco's and the CE companies haven't made that happen yet. The retail tru2way DVR spec hasn't been finalized and TWC has yet to use DSG on the tru2way boxes. They're still using DAVIC which should be scrapped for DSG.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Mystro is about the worst user interface I have seen on a widely distributed system. The fast forward and rewind can't be handled in an accurate way. It backs up or goes forward, presumable compensating automatically for the user's response time. The problem is that it is the response time of a 100 year grandma, so you go back and forth and back and forth and finally give up and end up watching the da** commercial anyway. The whole system response to button pushes is a lot slower than it used to be. Some of the menu items change their position depending on watching something recorded, or still in progress. It's inconsistent. If I select something that I am currently recording, like a ball game, I most likely want to watch it - not stop and delete, which is the first item on the list in this case. I can no longer choose the start time and end time, big disappointment. Only a narrow range of start early - stop late is given. If I plan to record a couple shows, and want to record Monday night football too, that makes it the third recording - no big deal before, I just start to record football a half hour later - not anymore. 15 minutes later is all she does, no manual entry. Stupid messages about my TV can't display the blah blah blah when I have the main HDMI TV off and watch in the bedroom via RF output. There is no more four times fast forward, only three, You have to hold the button so it jumps ahead fifteen minutes. This takes about 3 minutes to forward to the end of a race or golf match. Hold the button for three minutes, get out of here! The titles and info descriptions are truncated sometimes. Can it not be managed to get a whole dang sentence on the screen? Oh no, the TW logo has to be on there too, taking up space. I have an HD TV, it can display probably about a 1000 words legible from 10 feet away, and I can't get one whole movie title in the guide? If I would program our customer's user interfaces this lousy, I'd get fired on the spot. Just little things, right? The point is that the old software, even though sucking in it's own right, was better. The Tivo software from 10 years ago when I had satellite and a Tivo was much better. TW - just get yourself an old Tivo and do the same - easy! Now consider the money that TW and the box manufacturer make, and the lack of effort to get this right. Even when errors are identified, there appears to be no programmer getting right on it and sweating it and frickin fixin' it. I'll check out how the satellite DVR's work, and if it's better, it's bye-bye Time Warner.

I was planning to watch a few things I recorded on the DVR, but don't want to mess up the update. Right now the display has the clock (no blinking : ), and it says 480i. Its been like that for about an hour now.
UPDATE: Decided to turn it on and it has been loaded with Navigator. I need to get all my DVR schedules reset. Instead of recording only new episodes its set to record everything.
Anyway is it normal for the box to display the resolution on it when its turned off? Also is the hard drive supposed to always stay on now? I'm starting to notice really annoying things. I had a scheduled recording for "American Idol", which for the last 4 years since I had this box always started to record American Idol from FOXHD, some time in January or whenever the new season starts.
Now all over sudden it started to record ALL episodes of "American Idol Rewind" which neither me or my wife had selected. Here's hoping the actual American Idol will actually start.
Also, where it did this perfectly fine when season 2 started, now that season 3 came around for Robin Hood on BBC America, it did not start at all, even though my series recorder still had it.
How can I trust that any of my series - that aren't on right now but may start in the coming months - will actually record with the old settings?
Oh, my wife is catching on finally: She liked the new software at first, and then some of her shows either recorded a whole marathon of repeats she never had selected, or did not record at all..... She wants Passport back! :D
Since I may have to start over anyways.... maybe I should call and ask if they have a newer model with more disk space.

Maybe it will surpass Passport 2009 in the next 2 years or so. Navigator also supports interactive Mosaic's as our division has mentioned a new Mosaic channel which might be interesting. The Samsung boxes are very quiet even though it still constantly buffers the tuners which makes the HDD spinning all night long.
ODN and MDN should be getting Keyword search in the next couple of updates and ODN will finally get working eSATA. Remote/Web DVR programming is also coming in a future update. The guide data is much better but the core data is still truncated but the meta tags are better.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
3 methods of getting diagnostics in ODN.
1. Press Select until the mail light comes on then press down on the remote. That enables a ODN diagnostic menu.
2. Find the Diag channel which is some random number and not published in the guide.
3. Press Vol+ and Select on the box to access the SA diagnostic menu.
For the 8300HD you can use Select and Down which gives you a pretty good diag menu. The 8300HD is next in the line of updates. The 8300HD uses a different version of Navigator optimized for Legacy boxes that have less RAM.

In the end, TWC wiped out months of recordings for no good reason. My box behaved the same as yours. It seemed to be recognized only once after plugging/unplugging combination. After that, it was as if the eSATA port was dead or something. Although hard drive works perfectly fine connected thru usb or esata to a pc. Even formatting it on computer and plugging it back up doesn't cause DVR to see it again. That should trigger it to be formatted but zilch.
Strongly considering switching to TIVO for DVR service!

You are probably right. Where I work, I administer the local PEG channel for our city and thus have a few contacts with TWC that most cable users don't have. So, I've been able to find out the deal with this. TWC confirmed this morning that all of the HDC boxes in Greensboro that had ODN/Navigator pushed to them completely lost the ability to use an eSATA drive whether third party or TWC provided.
They said once the push out of Navigator is completed in January, they might look at getting the code fixed to again work with eSATA devices.
If you ask me, this is very crappy! There's no reason the drive support could not have been coded for and tested before this. This failure wiped out any recorded content on any external drive of a TWC cable box for all users in the market. That's just insane!

Previously, there was an option to sort the Guide by Favorites (all of your Favorites would be listed first in the Guide).
Now that option is gone, but you can use the Favorites button while in the Guide, to skip through your programmed Favorites without leaving the Guide. This was the way it was in Passport, if I recall correctly.
I prefer it this way, but I was just getting used to it the other way.

My crystal ball still predicts a DVD burner enabled STB. It will be a Samsung DVR box but with a DVD burner attached to it. Copy to VCR will come back but they'll make sure it respects the copy flags. This means you can't copy a DVR recording to DVD if the channel is marked as Copy Once. This box will be available for lease and it should come out later next year. It might even let you dub movies you've purchased though I don't believe it as TWC marks VOD as copy never. 2Q to 3Q10 is when the new DVD burner enabled box is coming out.

Keep in mind that there are quite a few customers using old Pioneer and SA boxes. When I was last at the TWC center there were a few people swapping in those SA 2000 boxes for new 4250HDC's. They did have Samsung 3260 HD-STB's and 3270 HD-DVR's if you asked. They still had quite a few SA boxes though. I did see a few legacy 8300 boxes available. The Pioneers and older SA are way too slow but they did do some enhancements but they still. Most of these boxes are in the double digits. Newer SA boxes are much better except for the 8000/8000HD DVR which sucks even with Passport. The 3250HD, 8300HD, and the newer HDC boxes are generally ok. I had a Pioneer box with an older version of MDN and man was that slow. I swapped it out for a DVR and moved the 3250HD from downstairs to my room and it was great until I got to try out the Samsung 3260.
Most people with these types of boxes swap them until they die. To them if it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm sure there are HDTV's hooked up to these archaic POS boxes modulated and stretched. When I got my Samsung 3270 and my other 3260 all they gave me were HD cables. I had like 2 sets of HDMI and 3 sets of component.
Hope this helps.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
The new Samsung DVD recorder STB is very important to TWC. The reason why it's so important is that they can rape you even more. You can copy first run VOD movies put for an additional fee per movie. It's also said to have excellent PQ. The Copy Quality is also said to be very good as well. Better than DVD quality. You can only copy a VOD movie only once! It's a DVR box so you can copy DVR recordings to DVD.
Cisco is also testing one as well. TWC will test both of course but I still think it will be Samsung. TWC has a rather sweet contract. Besides SA has gone downhill when Cisco took over them. A TWC employee in one division I must keep unnamed said their Quality Control was terrible and that they were making them as fast as they could in Mexico. They wanted the new Samsungs so that they could have something that was supposedly more reliable.

And this one is just starting to piss me off:
- If it is 5:57, and you are browsing the 6 o'clock block to see what's coming in a few minutes.... and you see a progam you want to see, and you click select.... all that comes up are record options, not a "watch channel now" option (which should be on the top of the list). Instead, you have to go back to the 5 to 6 o'clock block, and select the channel to watch it.... because it is still friggin 5:59! :(
They really should fix that one. RV65, you seem to have all the inside info somehow, do you know if that ever will be fixed?
I presume.... it will be fixed "soon"TM*

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
Better Guide data already is in ODN v3.1.3_2 in San Diego. The core descriptions are the same but Movie listings now have the actors and the director. The regular listings show the original airdate. Keyword search will be added next year. The search function in general is getting overhauled and it will be much better. I think the Keyboard search will be enhanced to search for keywords. As for the 6 o'clock feature I can't say about that. SoCal is still stuck on ODN v3.1.1_3 so they don't have the new data. I think maybe they can get better data but I find ODN has very good data. ODN v3.1.3_2 can have the current non descriptive data so they have to update the guide data servers. I don't work for them but I can get info from various sources. ODN I think is going to be the preferred version of Navigator since I think it will get the new features first. Also my division deploys new versions of Navigator before anybody else but that could change.

This could be more for the investors though. TWC does want to eliminate having multiple STB's and just have 1 server like STB for all TV's in the house. This can be done with W7MC but limited to only 4 tuners. Other HTPC software can do this.

Thank you for contacting Time Warner Cable Email Support.
I understand after the Navigator upgrade, sort by favorites feature is unavailable. You have found that this feature is still on the website.
I apologize for the inconvenience and will be glad to help you.
Thank you for bringing this to our notice. We will share your suggestion with our technical team is working on several improvements to the Search functionality. With the latest improvement, when you press B for search, the keyboard displays immediately. You can then press and hold any of the arrow keys to skip quickly through the letters and it will wrap around to the next row.
With the next phase of improvements, when you press B for Search, the program list displayed to the right of the keyboard will be positioned on the title of the program you are either currently watching or have navigated to in the Guide.
A later phase of improvements will allow you to search for a channel number by entering the name of the network. It will further consolidate multiple listings for the same show.
From a TWC email. Keyword search is cryptically mentioned along with other search improvements. Copy to VCR and remote guide programming are future updates. Maybe TWC will half ass the Keyword search but I hope they dont since they might have licensed the Tivo patents for it.
The arrow key skip works with ODN v3.1.3_2.

Found another diagnostic screen/installer app. Won't say how I found it but it's only for TWC techs. Unless you work for them then it's probably useful. I did find 2 channels listed in the 1200's which is what our division uses as test channels.

More Crapigator madness. Apparently, TWC pushed out an update in the wee morning hours today (November 11). After the update, all of the recordings I had made since the initial Navigator deployment were wiped away clean. This happened even though every single recording had the white cross with green circle to indicate recording should never be erased.
More Navigator bugs. Horrible. I guess everytime there's an update to Crapigator, TWC feels okay just to flush all your recordings. Amazing.

Most of the time Navigator won't delete your recordings. I guess you were unlucky.
I hope Keyword search gets added in the next update or a bastardized version of it. Keyword search is really just an extension of the keyboard search. You would still use the keyboard to enter in letters but it can now search for keywords. San Diego and the Carolinas will be the first to get it then the other divisions. I'm sure TWC San Diego is testing a new version and hope to get it out by the end of this year.

He also said it will be in the next gen of Navigator which could be the next branch. Once TWC adds all their wanted features and iron out the bugs Navigator will be a pretty nice guide. Keyword search is probably just going to be an extension of the Keyboard search. The Sports section will also have the Keyboard search. TWC is getting there so stay tuned.

Such as life in SoCal. Your division needs people like Bob Barlow who actually respond to feedback. I once sent in some bugs that both of my Samsung HD-STB's currently have and I got an engineering person. AlexTWC from Twitter agrees that Navigator will get better but it's up to the division to properly test and release the updates. San Diego I think is a test market for new updates since we get them first. The Carolinas are also test markets. I think your on MDN v2.4.4-16 while San Diego has v2.4.6-19. MDN v2.5 is in Beta while v3.0 is in development. ODN is already at v3.1.3_2 while SoCal is at v3.1.1_3. Even NYC has updated their ODN and MDN versions.
I'm sure your features are being added some day.
One advantage of ODN is that I have a Samsung DVR with a 320 GB HDD.

SARA users are generally more impressed with Navigator while Passport users are generally more disappointed. Passport is at a much higher standard than SARA so yeah. Then again I've seen SARA users not like Navigator. It's all a matter of personal preference. I would much rather have TWC continue to keep paying Aptiv and ditched SARA for Passport as it can work on both Motorola and SA networks. If TWC had kept Passport it would've been much better.

Re: [TWC] Time Warner Navigator
My SA 3250HD used to do that but my Samsung box doesn't do that. Of course it likes to say Please wait when it feels like it. Same with the VOD. It won't show the VOD preview but Please wait. If you watch a VOD title it will show the Please wait on the upper right hand corner of the screen. The only work around is to change it to a non VOD channel then go back to your desired VOD channel. The 3260 is supposed to do this but not all the time. My engineering contact says it does it when there are changes in the network and it needs to update it's VOD service group. Other customers have complained about this and are working on a patch or a firmware update.
No guide update but a firmware update for all 32xx boxes. The 3260 uses the same firmware as the 3270. The 3270 is the DVR version of the 3260 and has a 320 GB HDD. There isn't a 160 GB 3270 just a 320 GB HDD but there is no PIP due to a hardware limitation in the BCM7405 CPU.
Not to mention the Samsung boxes that our divison has deployed all run Linux.

LGPL Software
libuClibc.so

libc.so
libm.so
libpthread.so
libgcc_s.so

dhcpcd
tftpd
fdisk - Probably applies to the 3270 but is probably on the 3260 since they both share the same FW.
Of course Samsung can use Proprietary components as well. Stuff like the OCAP/tru2way middleware and the Cable stuff are probably all proprietary components.
