[CATV] No cable cards

I bought myself an earlt Christmas present - a TiVo. This requires two cablecards to work with HD and premium channels.

On Wednesday, I called to have an install scheduled for December 27/28 - and was told that they were "backordered" with no date for order fulfillment. I was advised that there are 40 people on the list.

I now have a $700 boat anchor.

Anyone else here in the same boat?

Any ideas for resolution?

You should ask them, since your out of Single mode cards, order me a M-card. Since TIVO is designed for the Mcard.

Re: [CATV] No cable cards

All you have to do is call them up and ask politely one more time. Then you just have to say this:
I just want to let you know that I will be contacting the FCC to file a complaint becuase it is a law that cable companies must provide customer's with cable cards.

Then if they still refuse you should contact the FCC. I got my cable card by simply saying that and then the next word out of there mouth was hmmmm it looks like the cable cards are back instock. Just make a little noise and you will get your cable card.

In the mean time I will file a report with the FCC.

here is the link to file a complaint. I promise you Patriot Media will not get away with this. This ia serious violation. Also it is within your legal right to purchase your own cable card and then have patriot media provision it. so can you do that too.

Just got off the phone with a lady at Patriot Media, she was very nice, unfortunately I didn't get her name. She was very understanding and helpful, she explained how they are out of stock at the moment and doesn't know when more are expected in but it should be very soon. She said they have a list of about 100 people wanting them now and its been a while since they have had the cards in. If she recalls correctly, its been over a month since they have had them. She also said with Christmas and people getting new TV's and TiVo the demand is up. She couldn't give a time frame, but she did say she expects them very soon. It was just nice to hear someone concerned and sounded genuine about wishing they had them.

I'm glad you had a nice experience, but I really think this proves my point. Customer service should be measured by the ability to solve the problem and not how nice and understanding one can be. When I call them, I don't want some really nice person crying over an issue because they feel bad, I want results. After getting results, I'll comment on personality and professionalism.

To sum up your post, there are no cablecards and they still don't know when they are going to get them. Not much has changed.

Just to bring you all up to date.

On Monday, I wrote to the mayor, explaining the situation. The mayor ppromised to call Patriot and get back to me.

But something has changed since I originally posted - the waiting list has gone from 40 to over 100. Given that some of these folks will need two cards - that is quite a waiting list.

This is not the first time this has happened. I waited for over 2 months last year for cable cards that were temporarily out of stock. They blamed it last time on the cable card manufacturer. Now that this is at least the second time they have no cable cards, it appears they are more interested in collecting the cable box rental fee instead of providing cable cards as mandated by the FCC.

Re: [CATV] No cable cards

Listen you need to be stern with Patriot Media. They need to be told the laws and regulations. First off you don't talk to a Customer Service Rep they are bull shit. You get a supervisor on the line and if they say the will call you back you take down the CS reps name and say this line:
"I want you to understand that I am accepting a call back from a supervisor and I am personally holding you "Insert Customer Service Rep's Name Here" responsible for make sure I recieve a call back."
Make sure this rep knows when you will be avaliable. Now if you still can't get in contact with a supervisor you call back this time very angrily explainging you never recieved a call back, and state you will wait on the phone until a supervisor will speak to you. Know when you finally get through with the supervisor you tell him the following line:
"(INSERT SUPERVISOR'S NAME), I am sure you are fully aware that it is a direct violation of the FCC laws to not provide customer's with a cable card. So I would appreicate that we set up an appointment within the next business days to have the cards installed and activated. Here are the dates I am avaliable: (Insert dates here)"

Saying those 2 lines and speaking to a supervisor you make him/her fully aware that you know your rights and will follow up with the FCC if there are violations going on. If you want a cable card you can get one.

As a customer base we will not stand slaves to Patriot Media.

Even if I were to get a card from Comcast, they said it would not work because it is a different system. PatMedia said it was Motorolla's fault.

2) Dial: 215-665-1700
3) Press 0 to be transferred to an operator
4) ask for "Brian Roberts' Office"
5) ask to speak to Brian Roberts
6) You will be declined but then say
8) I am a patriot media customer. Are you familiar with Patriot Media? If yes go to step 10 if no go to step 9
9) Patriot Media is a cable provider that Comcast purchased. There is no senior mangement at Patriot Media because it is run by comcast. Proceed to step 10
10) Patriot Media is in direct violation of an FCC law that states cable provides must provide customers upon request cable cards. State that Patriot Media has claimed they have a waiting list for 6 months of over 100 people but claim they also don't have stock of the cable cards, which they haven't for 6 months. Say this is unacceptable and you demand a call back by the end of the business day stating an update on the situation and hopefully a resolution.

Re: [CATV] No cable cards

The difference is that you can have multipal tuners on a single card. However i dont think SDV is part of the spec. Because its the tuner which is truely 2 way, not the card. The new tuners are BOCRs, not OCUR. BOCR can do all functions such as SDV, and PPV etc. OCURs cant they are just tuners. So if your talking TIVO, even with the MCard you will need the tuning resolver.

The tech spent two hours at my house. TiVo has two tuners. Based on which tuner is active when the head end sends a “hit” to the card, the number (and selection) of channels changes. The changes are primarily in the low 100s, and HBO (300s). It seems that they don’t understand the M-Card technology. Latest proposed solution – they are bringing two S-cards on Tuesday morning.

Re: No cable cards

As long as they are providing them (whether they are not in stock or not is another issue)then they are following FCC laws. If the company has X amount of converters and cards in stock and more people order them then anticipated ( which is possible with the drop in HD prices and HDMI cable prices). The company can not magically make them appear out of the air. Fact is they must be ordered and you cannot make the manufcaturer work any faster then they will. Simple facts of supply and demand.
If patriot were refusing to offer the above services and equipement to their customers then I can see there being an issue.
Whomever is waiting 8 months for a cable card never called back to see when things were in stock as horrible as it sounds. Unf things happen, I have never called in and been told we have no more cards that is not an option. Just that I have to wait, which is a bummer.

Based on the TiVo thread - it seems like the way to get action is to call Comcast or complain to the BPU.

The bad news here is that it seems like they're responding to "squeaky wheels" - when they really need to step up to the issues and solve them (e.g. cable card inventory).

They showed up with more M cards. No one told them that they were supposed to have S cards.

New appointment tomorrow evening.

This has gotten old.
Shit, I would be throwing a fit by now.

Good Luck Tomorrow!

What can you do?

They have no clue. The real solution is FIOS.

Did they make you sign anything indicating wrong hardware? Or did they just call the office and reschedule the appointment? I would refuse to sign anything without them immediately trying to fix it. I hear that works sometimes. Buddy of mine had the installer forget to bring cables for his HD PVR box. He refused to sign it without them finishing the job. 10 min later another guy showed up with the right stuff. Then again, that was comcast (relevant now).

They called around for the correct cards - were not successful and re-scheduled. Tonight is truck roll #4.

Re: [CATV] No cable cards

The original tech returned last night. Brought S cards. Got them installed, some channels still missing. Replaced the cable to the TiVo from the wall. Sound on the TiVo disappeared.

I then called TiVo. After 45 minutes of troubleshooting, they authorized the replacement of the box. The tech uninstalled the cards - then left.

I turned TiVo on 30 minutes later. Sound. Now I have no HD.

Re: [CATV] No cable cards

you have either a bad tivo or there is a problem with the wiring in the house (which the tech should have found). did he thoroughly check all cable connections?

Well, the tech was here today - and I'm back to where I was - HD & HBO, missing some channels. Replacement TiVo is on the way - ETA of Tuesday. Tech returns Wednesday to install cards in new box.

Replacement TiVo arrives Tuesday afternoon. I swapped it in Tuesday night and set it up. Tech arrived Wednesday afternoon and installed M Card. Everything works. I'm good to go.

Thanks to all who offered advice and direction.

There is no comparison between a TiVo and a cable company supplied DVR!
