anybody buying a cable modem due to rise in rental fees
hi,
was looking at patriots cable modem rental fees rising to 3 bucks a month. has anyone bought their own yet? I was looking at the one I rent now: Toshiba Cable Modem PCX2600 and it goes about 30 bucks on ebay.
1) Does patriot let you own your own?
2) Has any bought their own yet?
Thanks

I have always used my own cable modem. I have the motorola SB5120 and it works perfectly fine. All you need to do is call them and will provision it on the network. You'll just need to provide the MAC listed on the bottom.
My last modem lasted for 5 years and was only retired because it couldn't go above 5.2mbps.

Is there a speed difference between the Toshiba PCX2600 and the Motorola SB5120?
Thanks,
Ken

I have no idea about the speeds, but I did read some posts on comcast forums where people were having issues with the SB5101 model but the SB5120 was working fine. I think that issue is resolved, but at least I know for sure I wont have a problem with them.

The SB5100 also works fine, and it's available fairly inexpensively ($20-$40) on Ebay.

I have a Motorola SBV5220 VOIP cable modem with battery backup. On Amazon the review says Comcast would not let the owner install his own. Does anyone know if PatMedia allows you to purchase your own SBV5220 and install it?

You're lucky it is "only" $3/month. I was checking out Cox HSI's latest prices yesterday to see if it would be worth upgrading, and I saw that they now charge $10/month! I have owned my own modem for years, so I never knew the rental rate was that much. At this rate, only 6 months would pay for a new Motorola SB5101 (plus the sales tax) at Wal-Mart.

Can I just buy a DOCSIS cable modem? I assume yes, but figured I should ask first. Anything about the patmedia service that makes it "special"?
(edit)
I looked up the toshiba cable modem, listed as DOCSIS 2.0, so thanks for the recommendations.

Not trying to start a war here, but the Motorola SB51xx modems are widely regarded as being rock-solid, plus they are available just about everywhere.

Yes, any DOCSIS 2.0 modem will work. You'll need to call patmedia once you have one to give them the MAC address. It will take them a few minutes to get it in their system, but once it's in, you're good to go.
