Large Downloads cause drops?

I have AT&T SE 6meg DSL service. It is generally rock steady until I start large downloads. During downloads, it will drop every few minutes. Using a Trendnet TEW-631BRP router and the standard issue Westell modem in bridge mode. Anyone have any thoughts? Defective modem?
