Switching from Road Runner to Earthlink

Hi,
I am currently with Road Runner and I now wish to switch to Earthlink.

My problem with Road Runner is that they are forcing everyone in my area to set up new home page accounts, which I did just this week in response to an "Act Now" email. RR offered two options and I selected an option that was not well documented and now find it to be a poor choice (I need a DIRECT link to pictures for my potential buyers at eBay, which is not possible under the option I selected). I have spoken at length to Road Runner technical support and they are telling me that I am stuck with what I selected and cannot change to their other option, which is more like what I have been using for the last 7 or 8 years.

I would very much appreciate it if someone could give me a step by step approach as to what I should do in order to switch to Earthlink with a minimum in service interruption and to take advantage of any introductory pricing.

Are you using earthlink for your email as well? That will be your biggest headache although you can sign up for email only service via earthlink for like $30 a year for 2 addresses.

Re: Switching from Road Runner to Earthlink

Actually I use gmail or yahoo and never really needed the RR email account.

What has me concerned about switching is both the interruption in service and the billing. I read somewhere a few years ago, posts from others that had switched who were complaining about it not going smoothly as well as never getting the $29.95 six month deal from EarthLink, as Time Warner did the billing.

Is a simple call to EarthLink explaining what I want to do all that really needs to be done?

I had some funky issues when I switched to Earthlink via TWC but I think it was an exception rather than the norm and I would do it again.

I didn't loose internet connectivity but I lost the extras like email and hosting.

Heard the following:
1. there is no interruption in internet access
2. you keep the same cable modem
3. No need for them to make a service call
4. only change is you lose the *.rr.com email addresses.

like it's simply a back-office switch.

Any of this true?

CajunWon: yep, thats pretty much it.

Mind you, if you are using the webspace provided by Roadrunner, you will loose that too and will have to reupload the stuff to the webspace provided by Earthlink.

Don't know whether it's still possible or not, but I saved $3 per month when I switched by doing it thru Earthlink instead of TWC. Plus EL had an introductory special that got a much lower price for the first few months. TWC charges exactly the same for EL as for RR in my area if EL is ordered thru them.

PS Ignore the "reply to" - I hit the wrong button

Yes that is correct.
I did not have any problems or downtime in the switch (which I had heard was a problem several years ago).
I was happy with Roadrunner but Time Warner was unable (or unwilling) to change the home page account as I mentioned in the original post.

I am very pleased with the new Earthlink account and I am saving a few bucks to boot.

Another big plus for Earthlink for those who access Usenet is they outsource it to Giganews, so speed, completion and retention are outstanding. I was even able to drop the third party news server I was using and see overall improvement.

RR completely did away with Usenet I believe.

Ya but how many news connections is EL allowing you to use at the same time? Certainly not 8, right?

Earthlink allows 3 usenet connections per email address, any decent client can support multiple logins with different user/pass combo's. I currently use 4 email addresses for a total of 12 connections/threads, earthlink gives you up to 8 email addresses for free. :)

Also of note, it doesn't have to be an earthlink connection that you're logging in from, which is useful for if you're away from home.

For gamers, I've found that the routing/pings are exactly the same as Roadrunner as well.

I can easily max out my 7Mb pipe with 3 connections. When I used a third party news service that allowed 8 connections, I used only 3. Using more than that provided no added benefit.

I can agree with that statement, although I regularly use it at the local library as well, and they have a 50mbit connection :D I just don't bother switching the extra connections off afterwards.

So...how will these caps be mandated to Earthlink? I'm assuming whatever markets TWC takes their caps, Earthlink will implement them in lockstep? I'm deciding in advance whether to switch from TWC to Earthlink or just move back to DSL with covad.
