What's the deal with IFITL anyway? Apparently they use a fiber drop to provide this; what's keeping them from upgrading the equipment to serve better speeds?

Cable and infrastructure is in place... Was the design so horribly broken that they can't upgrade it? You'd think neighborhoods with fiber already deployed would be first in line for 10mbps and up service!

I have wondered the same thing myself... When I'm not "whining" about it. IFITL was great 5 years ago. AT&T milks us for cash but apparently has no plans for upgrades. I "whine" because there is no alternative in my neighborhood since it is not served by cable for some reason. I am just as angry at the cable people.

♦IFITL was left in the dust years ago and essentially abandoned. At one time I would get 1.8 - 1.9 speeds reliably. Now that the infrastructure is aging we experience outages that never used to occur and frequently see speeds dropping to 300k or less. (Hopefully my telling of the facts is not "whining".)

There are. It's just for the past 3-4 years every upgrade plan keeps getting upgraded which extends the wait.

There's a solution out there though.

I'm looking to be "free" from IFITL in 2 days (assuming the cable guy shows up) - hard to beat the latest offer by Comcast of $19.99/month for 12 months - with 4-8x the speed what IFITL provides now.. FINALLY they saw the light and offered Internet service without requiring cable and/or phone service.

I've been on IFITL for close to 10 years now - super solid but super slow - hopefully Comcast will be fairly close with regards to uptime..
I hope you like their Terms and Conditions.

Terms and Conditions
Offer ends 6/30/09, and is limited to new residential customers with accounts in good standing. Not available in all areas. Offer limited to Performance High-Speed Internet and requires subscription to either Comcast Cable or phone service at regular rates. To qualify for offer, service must be ordered via www.comcast.com. AFTER THE 6 MONTH PROMOTIONAL PERIOD OR IF ANY SERVICE IS DOWNGRADED, COMCAST’S REGULAR CHARGES APPLY UNLESS SERVICE IS CANCELED. SERVICE MAY BE CANCELED BY CALLING 1-800-COMCAST. Comcast’s current monthly service charges for the advertised services range from $42.95 to $59.95, and may vary depending on your area and other Comcast services (if any) received. Limited to service to a single outlet. Equipment, installation and taxes extra. May not be combined with other offers. Many factors affect speed. Actual speeds vary and are not guaranteed. PowerBoost provides bursts of download and upload speeds for the first 10 MB and 5 MB of a file, respectively. Not all features, including McAfee, compatible with Macintosh systems. Call for restrictions and complete details. Comcast © 2009. All rights reserved.

Yep - I'm well aware of the T's and C's - I've got 12 months at the same cost.. not 6. And even when the price "increases" - it's only $10 / month more than what I'm paying now for IFITL DSL - for 10x increase in speed. That's assuming the costs don't decrease over the next year.

That's the problem - I don't *want* to change from my current connection - however my requirements for additional speed have changed over the years since I installed the DSL. If I could get more speed - I'd stay - hopefully over the next year - ATT will have a comparable product.

How did you get the promo for 12 months? All I read is 6 months, then goes up to 42.95. I'm paying 17.95 permanantly to AT&T for IFITL after bitching about how bad the service is. I'd pay more for better speed because IFITL is just horrible at night. Thanks.

They've been running a TV Promotion on the air over the past few weeks. I believe you have to call the local comcast number (404-COMCAST) - instead of the 1-800-COMCAST. However, I did call the 800 number and they stated that the offer was available. However - it's a $50 install charge. In the end - I found a rep via craigslist that set me up with free install - 12 months/19.99 month. I'll check with the rep to see if it's ok to post his info here (if you're interested). I was paying $27.95/month for IFITL. Would have called - but with the 19.99 deal - hard to beat.

BTW - I'm now connected via Comcast - averaging 15 Down / 8 Up (12/6 rated without the powerboost). And - if I'm willing to pay - I now have the option to go up to 50/25 - with latest technology - and being told that 100 Mbps will be available in the near future (not that I need that kind of bandwidth - yet.. :) ).

My only concern is - of course - reliability - as the DSL was rock solid (only 4 known outtages in 9-10 years). I've had mixed reviews from friends - so we'll see how it works here..

Still not sure if they have made the final decision on which way they are going...I heard the ftth is out and they are prolly gonna stick with copper drops though.

Not smart if you ask me, but nobody is so...

Hopefully at least they are leaving an upgrade path this time and won't have to gut the ONU's (again) when they go to FTTH in another few years.

If they go the way they seem to be tilting, based on what I've seen from press releases, it should be really nice. The FTTC vs FTTH argument will be moot.

Quite well - have had no downtime to-date (knock on wood). Averaging 15 down/10 up with the PowerBoost - 12/2 standard. Only issue so far was that they billed me $3 for a "leased" modem - when I had actually bought my own. I called them and they did note and update the account - removed the $3 charge.

Hey Folks stuck on IFITL,

If you do not have a cable alternative checkout clear.com WIMAX. It pretty much covers metro Atlanta which blew my mind. I have 20/2 with Charter and I am very happy with it when there is no primtetime slowdown (They are working on the issue) but if you do not want Cable or cannot get cable then WIMAX sounds pretty cool.

They offer very reasonable 20/30/40 dollar plans that go up to 6/500. Have no clue how well it works but a couple of reviews I read about the same service in Portland seemed pretty positive. Check them out.

Re: It Sucks To Be On IFITL

Weird thing is that when you go to the "coverage map" section it doesn't even show GA as selectable. If you put in your address, it says there is coverage, but then I get a popup saying bummer...but I can close that and then see the local map for ATL. I guess they need to do some updating, or?

Anyone in Gwinnett signed up yet? Or maybe there is a clear forum? Need to search around.

Edit: There are 2 websites: just found out after hunting.

www.clear.com - this website is mostly white and green. I clicked through on this website and the coverage isn't readily upfront

and

www.clearwire.com (this one allows you to go almost directly to the coverage map) - this website is black and the coverage is right there on front....

if that helps anyone.

I wonder the same since you either have to sign a two year contract or put $150 up front.
Kinda a lot to ask for something that a) nobody has used in this area, b) may or may not work to the users liking. At least it is for me.
Anyway this thread has been hijacked and should be moved over here:

Last I heard 1Q of '10 the project was going to start.

Right now not much work is going on other than Uverse installs because the contract is up next week.

Ifitl is the best dsl service available anywhere. It is a direct circuit that goes from the wall jack directly to the computer. No modem or router or other things that can malfunction causing problems. I know it has a 1.5 rating but I regularly see over 2 megs everywhere. It runs independently from any phone line or coax cable. You maintain low cost and good speeds. Dont be so fixated in 3 or 6 megs.. servers cant transmit that fast anyway. It is the best service you can have. I have installed thousands of customers on ifitl so I know.

att is pushing uverse right down the publics throat because it a deregulated service. there are many problems with picture quality and other things like the broken promises and false advertising that is upsetting many customers. Deregulated means that they can do what they want and answer to nobody. It also means thousands of contractors ala comcast and direct tv who take no ownership and have no vested responsibility to the company or the customers. Be very, very careful what you ask for.....it can sometimes bite you in the behind. caveat emptor.

Not when you work from home and send/receive large files. The 256k upload, which is generally much lower than that for me, is the critical issue. I agree it is reliable, although the card (or whatever is in the pedestal at the curb) has gone out several times in the last year and had to be replaced. At some point, when that hardware is no longer available, I suppose we will be converted...

Re: It Sucks To Be On IFITL

Sure most of the time IFITL is reliable enough and provides enough speed for what I need it for, however about 25% of the time, I can’t watch a video without having to pause it and let it load. Downloading large files is also slow compared to other connections I have tried out, but since I don’t do that much, I could care less. I imagine however, that this would anger many people who download large files on a regular basis. We have also had several problems with the card in the pedestal getting fried after a storm. (At least 5 or 6 different times) We got IFITL a few months after Bellsouth "upgraded" our neighborhood to fiber because of the large proportion of Bellsouth Americast customers in our area. At the time it was great, but as the internet has evolved, the speed is really not up to par with what it should be. I'm pretty sure that the merger killed all of Bellsouth's plans to upgrade the system, and hopefully AT&T will figure out how to upgrade its IFITL customers (to Uverse or whatever) sooner than later.

Agreed ....

IFITL was *rock-solid* as far as connectivity was concerned - I only had 3 instances of being down over approximately 9-10 years. I did have the slowness @ night as well when I first signed up - but after several calls to Bellsouth (I was the first in the subdivision to sign up for the service) they finally resolved the issue after about 1-2 weeks.

I'd still be with IFITL if it weren't for the speed issue - 1.5Mb/256kb just didn't cut it for my needs anymore.

I've now had Comcast for approximately 2 months now - and it's been exemplary in both uptime and speed (12/2 tier). I've yet to have any instances of downtime nor has the speed wavered any from the first install. The speed is the greatest change - reminds me of when I first switched from dial-up to IFITL .... You really don't realize how much of a difference it is until you experience it...

I still occasionally check ATT's site to see if they've introduced UVerse into my neighborhood, etc. I noticed that there was a new installation not too far from my home - but no dice yet.

When it finally does show up - and if it's comparable to price, etc., then I'll probably give it a try - we'll see.. :)

It still sucks to be slow.

I looked into Clear, not in my area yet. I have also made some inquiries with the HOA to see if they can get Charter or Comcast to my sub-division. You would think they would be thrilled for the opportunity to lure new customers, but talking to them on the phone is a dead-end. I will, at some point, find out where their local offices are and make a trip...[sigh]...
