thought i'd try your expertise, as twcnyc is no help and can't send a tech out for 5 days. my explorer 3250hd box has been rebooting itself several times a day for the last few days (never happened before). today it started that process but never finished. just ended with a -^v- message on the display.

i tried to restart the box several times (didn't work) and then unplugged everything (component cables, coax and power). Replugged and now get an Er00 then br.07 error message on the display.

any thoughts? i'm in manhattan, fyi.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

I live in Queens, Rockaway Park, my SNR used to be 38 few months ago and now its down to 30-31 values and power levels that used to be within 5dmbv are now around 10dbmv. No splitters or wiring was changed on the house itself. My modem rca 425 (i believe the very smallone) started to get some bit error rate % now that snr is so low and power level is so high... I called Time Warner and they said that as long as snr is 28+ and power level within 15dbmv they dont have to do anything for me... Now according to most QAM 256 specifications SNR should be 32+ and while things are ok at about 30.5 values those values flactuate and if the trend of degrading signal continues I will have no internet. I thought about ordering DTV but that will mean extra splitter which could kill things... Any ideas? I have been checking RR mainteance page ( »help.rr.com/HMSLogic/network_status.aspx ) and been aware of lot of fixes and problems going on in brooklyn queens and manhattan but not sure if this is related. thanks.

Is HDXtra part of digital cable? I mean I have digital cable and the HD box, I can watch HBO in HD (cause I pay extra for HBO) and I watch Discovery and National Geographic in HD.

But I get the blue screen telling me to call TW if I try to tune to HDXtra.

Also... I have the HBO in demand... is there no HD HBO in demand???

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

For some reason, my HD commercials look a lot better than the actual shows. There's way too much ghosting and shitty quality. It doesn't look as bad at all on my cousin's TV. I don't know if it's my set-top box or area, though my cousin lives in the same neighborhood. I know it's not my TV because my PS3 looks sweet on it. I have a 1080p TV, and when putting the aspect ratio as 1:1 so I get black boxes around yet original size video, I still have the problem.

Also, why is there no HD on-demand for premium channels like HBO and Showtime?

Hi
I saw your posting here to solve some issues with the cable box. Here is the story:

I have
HD cable box Samsung SMT H3050 provided by TWC
32LG30 HD TV
PANASONIC PT AE2000U projector
DENON AVR 3808CI
HDMI cables MONSTER CABLES ULTRA 1000
PS3
Now here it comes the issue:
IF i connect the HD box with HDTV or HD PJ trough HDMI cables is ok (however is not the best),but seems the monitors don't have the capabilities to reproduce a good sound i used the AV receiver. So I've input the receiver between the cable box and the TV/PJ.Hooked with HDMI cable the video imagine every 10 sec blink on both monitors(the sound is ok its not breaking). I did the also trough the component cables connections with optic cable and its seems ok video and sound (no blink). Now i suspect the issue in AV receiver logic?huh. The video signal trough HDMI blink but component no!?
We living in the HD era, so i don't want to use component cable (7.1 surround eg).I called the manufacturer of the receiver and they said to send the receiver for the test
Before i send the AV , i want just an opinion and if you heard about this issue

Do you have an HD box connected with HDMI, DVI, or component cables to an HD TV?

Are you watching the HD version of the channel and are the progams broadcast in HD?

Often only new episodes of certain programs are in HD even on the HD version of the channel, everything else is SD and maybe stretched. Don't believe the guide data for what is HD and what is not, often it's wrong and the broadcaster controls that not the cable company.

Why not? Component is HD, just like HDMI or DVI, only it's an analog connection. I honestly notice no difference between HDMI and component on my Sony HDTVs at all, only reason I use HDMI is the eliminate cable rat nests as only one cable is needed for audio and video as opposed to 4. And By the way, you got ripped off big time getting cables from those scam artists at Monster.

I've noticed the problem when I'm watching a recorded program on Fox HD (705). I'm also recording another program at the same time I'm recording the one on Fox (but that channel doesn't have issues). No video problems at all. Using component cables.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

I heard that the Passport boxes will be getting MDN starting on May 31st. However this will likely be a staged roll out. TWC has done this before where they rollout an update on one box type, then another, and so on. MDN is for the non HDC boxes or the Samsung boxes. MDN is not written in Java and it's better in some cases than ODN but it has it's problems. It's faster than ODN but not as stable though they may have fixed that. There are probably a few Passport areas here and there so they will eventually have to update them. Once the Passport areas get updated to Navigator then it's the SARA areas next. SARA owners might actually like this update since it will give them some neat features. By then MDN and ODN will be much better. Same with the boxes. Hope this helps.

Had a weird deal with my 8300HD DVR. It's like it went back in time. Some of my saved shows from a few days ago were deleted, and they had shows there from 4/9 that I had already viewed/deleted (which when I tried to access were not available). They also had restored shows to my series manager which I had canceled weeks ago.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in Flushing, New York

:(Sadly Time Warner Cable HD TV service in the NYC area stinks. I am in the Flushing Queens, NY area of service. I too have been experiencing drop outs, pixelixation, freeze ups, on various HD channels more and more. I went and exchanged my old Scientific Atlanta HD box and got their new Samsung 3050 box. Still get the pixelization freeze ups and audio drop outs on some HD channels I watch. I was trying to watch a HD MAX channel one night and that one channel was constantly freezing up and blanking out to where 90% of the time all I see is a blank screen! Yet if I switch channels one up or one down, those other channels were coming in smooth. That tells me that Time Warner is screwing up the signal somehow at their source feed end! I am getting tired of this poor service as almost every HD movie I watch has to freeze up and pixelate and go blank every time! I bet they do that so that you cannot have a complete smooth recording of a movie?!!? I am soon thinking of canceling my Time Warner TV services as they have the balls to hike my subscription prices now to ridiculously unaffordable, unjustifiable and unsustainable by me. :(

Sounds like a poor signal issue. Call and have a tech come out to fix it.

P.S. Channels that appear next to each other on the box don't have to be on adjacent frequencies on the cable.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

It will work but it might be a bit sluggish. An HD box will work on a SDTV and it runs a bit better since it has a better CPU and more RAM. TWC hasn't ordered SD boxes in a very long time since it's cheaper just to get HD boxes. I now have a SA 3250HD that used to be our main box. I replaced the main box with the 8300HDC. I also have a 4250HD. Pioneer has no longer made cable boxes for quite a while now so you might just want to convince them to swap it if it has response issues.

I still think people should swap their low memory STB for a new ODN one once it comes out. If it does make a difference then it might be ok. I still remember using MDN when I got my Pioneer BD-V1100. It looked like DOS. Changing the channel was a pain since it would magically jump to a much higher channel then what you wanted. It didn't help that it was slower than molasses. It ran great with Passport though. I hope NYC gets a successful MDN rollout.

Here is a list of recommended box list for MDN. I made this list so that the consumer can get an optimum MDN experience. Old boxes from 1999-2001 era boxes tend to have problems running MDN. If you have one of the boxes to avoid then you should swap it for a new ODN box. The HD boxes tend to run MDN a bit better since they have better hardware like more CPU and more RAM.

"Yes, we just got those in April but they're still being tested" to
"Oh sorry, it's actually only available customers in Staten Island." Those last two were from a "supervisor" who couldn't tell me what the difference between ODN and MDN was. Or what either stood for. Or what model number boxes they even offered (she eventually asked around for the last two).

I'd pretty much resigned myself to for a tech to come out every week or so to replace the box until I actually get it. The only thing worse than dealing with lousy phone reps is spending 3 hours on a Saturday at 23rd St only to find out that by "new" box, they actually meant one that came out in 2006.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

The 3090 unfortunately has it's own set of issues. Mostly with the version of ODN that NYC is using which is an older version. The latest version of ODN performs better on the 3090. ODN is the OCAP program guide that runs on the 3090 and the HDC boxes. MDN is just like ODN except it's for boxes like your 8300HD. They are testing it and it might come out soon but that could be delayed. I think TWC NYC is ordering the 3090 with the 320 GB HDD option but they could be ordering the 160 GB model.

Satch Man on AVSforum.com has this really good piece of advice for all you passport users. I can't stress enough on the legacy boxes like those old Pioneer's. All you Pioneer and legacy SA users should let go of them. Boxes like the 3250HD however are just fine. The 8000/8000HD are ok but the 8300HD is a bit better. Then again the 3090 is pretty awesome as well. Of course I no longer have an MDN box. I got a sleek lookin' SMT-H3260 :).

If you have anything of importance. Please archive or watch it. Some people who've been upgraded to navigator lost all their recordings. Navigator is also sensitive to signal strength. Hope this helps.

I think your being. The actual OS is PowerTV on the SA and Pioneer boxes. Samsung boxes can run either VxWorks or Linux. VxWorks is used on the 3050 while the 3090, 3260 and 3270 run a specialized version of Linux. The guide runs on top of that OS. Hope this helps.

Have you seen issues with HDMI output on the Samsung 3050 boxes to Vizio? I just picked one up two days ago to hook-up to my Vizio monitor. Signal will cut out permanently after a short period when I turn to HD channels. Have to shut off box and monitor to get it working again.

Tried the same box and HDMI cable with a Viewsonic monitor I have and it worked fine. Component also worked fine to my plasma, but can't use component to the Vizio because it doesn't have component inputs. Also tried restricting box output to 480p; didn't help.

Would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help.

First post. Had too after the update. I was dreading this day. I been with Passport with sa 8300hd for a while and refused to update.
I see in over a year they haven't added a keyword search nor have a search by highlighting the show and hitting search to see when the show is on again later in the week. Nor can you record from "any channel" as an option when picking a show series.

And they removed all the themes search including science.

Adding insult to injury, it deleted any series that were not actively being recorded (i.e. fringe not being shown so they deleted the show from series list)

And I am glad to see others having audio dropouts on 705. Had two techs (wasted two days) come in so they could tell me its impossible to have audio dropouts without video problems even after recording the phenomenon.

TW is unbelievable.

Sorry for the complaining.

Keyword search is a top priorty for Navigator. They're licensing some Tivo patents that should make it better than the one used in Passport. That's probably a highly requested feature. Manual recording would make it even better.

July 20 2009

I just bought new HDTV Panasonic TCL37G1. I just got
Time Warner's new HD cable box Samsung SMT-H3050.

The HDMI connections work sporadically. 1st HDMI on TV
hardly works ( only video ). 2nd & 3rd HDMI connections on TV work and sometimes dont work. I hv to turn HDTV on and off & HD cable box on and off several times before I
can get connection to work sound & Video.

The component connection works fine. All the time.
But I want the component connection for my Stereo.

Whats wrong w/ Time Warner???
I had a tech in already. Got a new one coming this week.
I switched the Samsung box, I switched the HDMI cables.

I contacted Panasonic, they told me the HDMI connection works @ version 1.3.
Does Time Warner only work @ version 1.1 ???
Is this a source of the problem ???

Also the Cable TV guide doesnt always work, Im on 1 channel
the guide is on another.
Also not all the HD channels come in, they come in sporadically. Also the audio goes out once hour for 5 - 10 seconds. Video also breaks up alot.

pls advise

Similar troubles in Fayetteville, NC.
New Sony 46" KDL46S5100 HDTV and SA8300 DVR box.

I am seeing the Audio drop sporadically.

So far I have replaced the TV once ( thanks, Best Buy!! ) replaced the SA8300 3 times and replaced the HD cables . Even after that I am still losing Audio. The symptom I am seeing is that audio breaks up and goes away for a few seconds to a few minutes and then seems to come back on it's own. Switching channels seems to help restore sound some times. If I am watching a program from the DVR, the audio can drop also but the drop is not in the same place if I rewind and replay the program. This tells me the source is fine on the DVR and something is going on during the decoding on playback.

AND... starting in the past day or so: "red light" shows a program is recording and it really is not being recorded Another problem recently: when a show is really recording randomly it stops recording.

And now -starting today- video is getting flaky..... blank screen when I power it up for a while then it corrects it self.

This video performance must be embarrassing to the professionals who work at this company! Sounds like the bean counters have trumped the technical and quality staff again.

I signed up for the 2 year "lock in" and am within my 60 days so If they don't get this sorted out fast, I am off to Dish/DirecTV.

None. Mystro which is really MDN doesn't have timers like that. I think your mislead on it being a firmware. It's just a guide app. It runs on top of an actual OS called PowerTV. Passport was also just a guide program. I think TWC removed that feature so they could sell their DVR.

Hi, I live in Queens and I have had TWC for @ 4 years now. Original install was with a digital box. In January 2009, I took the plunge and bought a High Def. set and upgraded my service with TWC. I exchanged the box for a HD Box and connected everything myself. The only thing we noticed was that when we changed channels the picture would display, than go off for a second and than redisplay. This past week on Tuesday, 7/21 there was some sort of outage in my area which affected service and the HD box. TWC came out on Friday 7/24. After several hours they finally got a replacement box to work and they did some work on the lines outback of my house. Now we have issues with the picture and sound quality while watching TV. The service guy said that the signal was weak and recommended replacing the wiring inside the house. Do I need to replace the original cable line to resolve this signal issue or is it a problem on TWC's end?

It is $20 extra each month minimum that I do not have, unless I do not feed my kids lunch which I do not think they will consider a fair trade off. :)

It is $10 extra for DVR service and $10 extra for each DVR box. Also I cannot tuck the DVR into an envelope like I can with a VHS tape or a DVD-R and take it with me to another room or to my van to keep the kids from fighting on a long trip.

The DVR from the cable company has no burn to DVD option and is too expensive for people on a budget in this tight economy. This Mystro Navigator nonsense is just another way to pick our pockets.

Hi,
Yes sounds like a weak signal is causing your problem. The tech can see if you have inside wiring problem by doing a signal check at your first POE (Point of Entry) on the cable feed.
I am not getting pixel problems with the samsung, only issue I find with the samsung is the pausing of the guide as you scroll through it. Seems like the samsung cannot handle the navigator guide to well. need more speed captain!

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

I've got TWC in Mahattan and a SA 8300HD box. This is a list of all the bad changes I've found when we got switched from Passport to Mystro (Navigator):

-shows in program guide no longer have labels "Live", "Taped", or "Repeat". How are you supposed to know what shows are live? Really bad for programming DVR for sports.
-DVR no longer automatically prompts you to extend the end time of live programs.
-in the guide the label "NEW" is shown erroneously in many programs that aren't new.
-the guide provides less program "info" than before.
-in the guide you can no longer jump between your favorite channels- now you will leave the guide and tune to the favorite channel instead.
-the duration of the programs are no longer displayed on the first screens in the guide, search, or show list- you have to drill down to see it.
-searching for shows is much less user friendly and takes much more buttons and time. The Find Shows feature puts you back at "A" every time you start a search. I used to be able to press one button ("C") to see every instance of whatever show I was on in the guide. Now I have to keep drilling down, and also uncollapse multiple listings of a program.
-when you hit Pause the banner stays on the screen- it used to disappear. Not good for sports.
-when watching a recorded program the tuner displays the channel of the recorded program instead of the channel you're actually tuned to- not easy to remember what channel you're on if you want to go back to live tv.
-when using REW or FF it use to show the exact time you're at in the program. Now it's harder to figure out with just the one number on the left of the banner.
-the Instant Reply often doesn't work right the first time you use it on a program- the first time it replays only a couple of seconds. It replays the correct 8 seconds only if you hit it again.
-when you REW at the slowest speed, the program actually jumps AHEAD a number of seconds from where you release the REW button.
-viewing Scheduled Programs used to be one button away. Now you have to scroll to it, hit a button, then hit another button to sort by date or title- not good.
-no more going forward or back frame-by-frame when in pause mode. Again, bad for sports.
-previous hour of startup channel programming is no longer buffered each time I power on the cable box.
-icons on recorded program list no longer give detail on when shows will be erased.

Not to mention- in the new Start Over feature- once you're viewing a program in start over mode you can't even use FF.

I think it's a friggin insult TWC offers no concern or apologies for taking away all this functionality, and for what? for the dopey Start Over feature and caller ID on the tv screen? Gimme a break.

I suggest anyone else who's unhappy about losing these features keep calling TWC as often as possible and give them crap about it.

The only improvements in Mystro IMO:
-"% Full" display on recorded programs list.
-ability to sort all Favorite channels in the guide so they're all together.

They list the phantom recording as "unavailable". I've seen this happen a few times when, say one show ends at noon and another show starts and noon, and for that minute it lists two shows as overlapping. Now it does it when I'm only recording one show and there isn't another set to record for hours. It is completely baffling to me why we should lose functionality - and be expected to pay the same price.

Not only are features missing, but I now have troubles with the box. It has inexplicably rebooted twice since the software 'upgrade'. Even while watching a program live, it stutters and freezes.

It makes one long for the days of analog TV and rabbit ears. At least that worked....

I hate Mystro. One problem I have not seen mentioned is loss of the ability to turn the freakin' display off when the box is off.
I have enough green lights in the bedroom with out that one. With Passport I had the option of turning the display off when the box is off. Now it's either No Display at all or Clock Always, Channel Always or Channel while tuning.
It may seem trivial to some but I liked it and am POd that they took it away.

Does anyone else have issues with fox hd while watching sports. The last few Saturday baseball games and now with the football games today most camera angles, not all, are choppy, and some angles appear fuzzy and almost like they are slightly in slo mo. Every other channel i have tried looks perfect, and i just want to know if its a TWC problem or a Fox prob.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

I completely agree--the Mystro software sucks! I think we should start a petition to demand a discount (say 25% less) on all non-programming fees we pay to Time Warner, i.e. the cable box, the remote, the DVR service, etc. We're getting less capabilities in the "upgrade," so we should pay less accordingly. Here's is just short list of things I cannot stand in the "uprgrade:"

> Close caption does NOT work right. Many texts are lost.
> DVR marks recorded programs for deletion even though there's still plenty of memory left.
> I'm unable to reorder recorded programs in the order I'd like to have them deleted.
> When rewinding, the box jumps forward by a few seconds. This did not happen with the old software, but it does now, which is hugely inconvenient.
> The electronic TV guide only shows 1.5 hour of what's coming up. It used to be at least 2 hours.
> In the TV guide, when movie descriptions are shown, it doesn't show the director name or country of origin anymore. Also, the # of stars for the rating is now listed at the end, which means one would need to scroll to find if a movie is worth watching
> in the TV guide, one cannot find shows by keyword anymore
> The new software does not allow setting a precise start and end time for recording. One has to record the whole show or not at all.
> In the DVR mode, when fast forwarding or rewinding, the display does NOT indicate how many minutes you have moved. The visual gauge is not an adequate guide for where you are in the program.
> Now, a single touch on the A button erases a recorded program. It used to take 2 hits, which is a safer way to confirm deletion.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

NYC is using an outdated version of MDN which will end up getting upgraded someday.

Keyword search I know they'll add that shortly. I think its ok but my division always gets the latest version since we're a test market for new software. Mystro is actually called Navigator. If you complain to them about Navigator they sometimes will report it to the developers. It's still not perfect but I've never experienced a MDN DVR only it's OCAP cousin written in Java. The ones for the non C and Samsung boxes are written in C.

This has been an ongoing issue (nationwide and not just TWC I believe) for a month or so now. There's a thread on the avsforum if you want to read further on it. I was switching between ota and twc. OTA did not have the problem.

SDV is coming to NYC. TWC singed a deal with BigBand to provide SDV solutions though other divisions use Cisco's SDV solution. SDV is great when it works but if it doesn't then it can be an issue. If it doesn't work then it will say Channel Not available. It will supposedly help them get more channels though NYC is large and diverse which means that all channels are being watched. We'll see how this will pan out in the future.

Leggatt,

One thing you can do when rewinding is the press the pause button when you see the spot you want to rewind to. If you hit play, it will not forward, it will play from that point.

Also, there are far more problems that need to be fixed other than keyword search.

Beyond the shortness of the descriptions of the guide, when recorded, it doesn't even record the description in the guide. It gets cut off.
And while you can see the 7th forwarded day (today is wednes and see next tuesday schedule), the 7th day of programming will not show up on scheduled shows to record (despite you having it scheduled to record) or it will not show up in search by title.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable Mystro 7/14 Queens Roll-out

I'm a victim of TWC's July 14, 2009 Queen's DVR Conversion to Mystro from SARA.

Since then I've experienced outages, multiple reboots/day, major loss of guide functionality, incorrect recording, etc. I'm paying almost $100/month for utility grade service and want to be compensated for the poor service and lost recordings. I'm waiting for the Samsung 3090 320gb box, software fixes, support for the external drive. In addition, my Coop (300+customers) is meeting with Verizon about switching enmasse to FIOS.

I use my DVR for time shifting and archiving shows for historical purposes so the guide and recording is very important. Mystro is a major downgrade in reliability, functionality, and usability from the SARA software. Its also slower, uses more more resources (JAVA versus C), has poor human factors, takes more time to setup recordings, and fails very often.

My SA8200 hung during the conversion process for 16 hours, I had no cable service for days; the box had to be replaced, my external hard drive was trashed. They replaced the DVR and said my 320gb Western Digital external hard drive was CPE and not supported. I bought a 1 TB Seagate drive which worked for almost 2 months; after a reboot I got a message that I needed to reformat the drive in order to use it with Mystro.

They said the 8200 was too slow and didn't have enough memory to run Mystro well. I'm waiting for 320gb Samsung 3090. In the mean-time I such not be charged for services and want additional credit for the lost recordings.

Please help! This is 3rd time my box has failed to record a program it was scheduled to record. Everything was set to record as of yesterday. The recording log says set top was unable to record the program. Before I give up on about 13 hours of unwatched movies and documentaries and change my box, is there something anyone can suggest?
Its always when it is 2 programs recording simultaneously and it can be any channel. Not always when 2 shows r recording only sometimes. Could it be I have it on pause in the middle of a recorded show when it have to record 2 shows?

In addition, other shows are not recorded and are "forgotten" recording log indicates "service no longer exists"

It's also been reported on the avsforum that instead of two 60 minute buffers and PIP, the 3270 has one 90 minute buffer and no PIP. Something to consider if you're a user of that feature.

Got a good one for you.
Why do all my video on demand channels pixelate and seems to happen only durring peak hours.

Had a tech here and he said RDC numbers were low (31-35) and that the plant operations will have to check it at the tap to make adjustment. I got a work ticket #. and called a few days later to find the outcome and was told ticket was closed. Still same problem. To tell you the truth I dont think anyone showed up.

RDC stands for Reverse Data Carrier and this does affect your VOD outcome. Pixelation/Macroblocking occurs when the signal level of the box is low. If you tune to channel 996, do you still see the RDC at 31-35? Also, if you could send me the serial number of your box, we'll be happy to look at it for you.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

Hi all -

Recently, I've been having some bad pixelation and audio stuttering on some HD channels of my 8300HDC box.

The same channels are the usual suspects - 703 (TNT), 707 (ABC), 711 (WPIX). When this occurs, the SD version of the channel works perfectly w/o any problems. I haven't done a lot of analysis, but the problem does seem to get worse when we are recording.

Rebooting the box seems to help it out but the problem seems to return. I'd prefer to not have to reboot the box daily.

My question is as follows, does this sound like a cable box issue or a line quality issue ? Since the problem goes away when I reboot, I'm tempted to think that something is happening in the cable box to cause this, and swapping it out might fix it.

Any way I can test or view diagnostics to rule out a line quality problem ?

cheers,
--jb

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

I've been suffering from bad pixelation, and to a lesser extent stuttering for a month now here on Staten Island. Calling, emailing, and having a tech at my house has done nothing to fix it. Rebooting my box has no effect, and recording is no better or worse though. Some days are worse than others, and it's rare day that my picture on most of my channels would be considered just "good".
