Netgear Block Sites Keywords

I have a Netgear WGR614. In the "Block Sites" portion of the Admin pages they talk about a "Keyword" entry for the block list. Does this mean I can put "adserver." as a keyword, and block all access to any site beginning with adserver? Can I enter ".cn" to block access to all .CN domains? How about ".ads." to block any site with an .ads. in the name?

EDIT: How about /ads/ as a keyword blocking ads directories in URLs?

The help within the Netgear gives only complete domain names as examples, but the term keyword, implies more.

It seems to work well. /ads/ /banners/ banners. adserver. ads. doubleclick. all do what you would expect. I found myself wanting some wildcards however :( I have added a couple dozen keywords, and now I can even use IE without seeing all those annoying moving images. Firefox, with adblock, is now absolutely perfectly ad-free. Best part is when I identify an ad leaking through, it's easy to add a keyword which will block it. They allow you 255 keywords, more than enough to stop most annoyances.

Hey that would be awesome to hear a list of what keywords you use, would you mind if I add your tip up on my site?

Also have you found that normal ad blockers just don't work? Which ones are you using?

I have some ads in rotation on my site, but they are mainly affiliate links, so I was thinking they probably wouldn't be eliminated, cause they are originated from my site, (google text ads aside). To be honest, I don't care people that don't want to see ads probably shouldn't have to see them anyway, cause they won't be wanting to buy etc..

Also how does it work against those popunder ads?

Hmm lots of questions from me for a change! ;-)

I can't say if it is true for this model, but, on other Netgear models (such as the FVS338), turning on the keyword blocking has resulted in a significant throughput decrease.

You should run some Internet speed tests with the blocking on and off to make sure that you are still getting your ISP's rated download speeds with the blocking turned on.

I use Adblock Plus with Filterset.G it's very effective. Problem is it only works with Firefox (my main browser), but doesn't work with anything else. Windows media player was still filled with ads, so I started using OpenDNS Content Filtering. with Adware sites blocked as well as the following:

With the combination of the netgear keywords and the opendns blocks, both IE and WMP are pretty much ad free; firefox is totally ad-free. I also get hardly any more norton "tracking cookie" warnings.

Don't know what you mean. I don't see any ads. I also have NoScript - JavaScript/Java/Flash blocker installed on firefox, so no dancing palm trees or dumb cartoons either.

I just noticed that you are on DSL- it is probable that, even if the throughput is lower with the keyword blocking turned on, the router is still fast enough for your service. If you were on a fast cable or a FIOS connection, the slowdown might become evident.

This true. I have no experience except with 1mbps DSL Which by today's standards is not a "FAST" connection.
