VOIP or Verizon FIOS Phone

I have CV. I am looking for a new provider. One problem I have with CV is that at least once a week I loose dial tone and have to reboot my wireless router. I don't know if the problem is the router or the TA. To avoid this problem in the future I am considering getting Verizon FIOS phone. I already have FIOS internet. However Vonage is less expensive and has many more calling features but I am afraid that I will have problems with the service dropping like CV. Any ideas or suggestions…

Re: VOIP or Verizon FIOS Phone

My first suggestion is to get Vonage (since you've already narrowed it down to them vs FiOS phone) with a vonage-assigned number and see if you can get it to work reliably. If you don't want to interrupt incoming calls from CV, set your Vonage number as Safe Forward and unplug the ATTCV TA.

A second suggestion is to check out more than just Vonage. There are numerous providers out there, and you may find one you like better. (Not a slam against Vonage, I just don't know how much you've looked.)

Third, if you want any technical help regarding how to get your router to play nicely with VoIP, it would be helpful if you'd post your router model and firmware you're using. (It wouldn't hurt to post which model ATA you're using with CallVantage, either.)

Re: VOIP or Verizon FIOS Phone

I live in NYC and Vonage seems to be the most popular. I don't want a mom and pop phone service. If I could get Vonage to work (without rebooting the router once a week) then I'll go with them but I guess I won't know until I order it. I hate to then cancel with Vonage and go with Verizon...if there is a setting in my router to change that would be helpfull. I know little about computers and routers.
My router is Linksys WRT54G wireless and CV TA is MTA-1. are there settings in the router i can change? thanks for the info...
