Linksys WRV210 VPN w/Microsoft XP VPN client (not QuickVPN)
I can't figure out why this should be so hard to do, and so little info on the web.
I just bought the WRV210 because I wanted a hardware VPN solution. Up until now, I had a D-Link regular router, and put my PC in the DMZ. I set up "Incoming connections" to accept a VPN connection. This worked fine, my friend could create a VPN connection with an agreed-upon username and password and my PC accepted it. We could map drives on each other's machines, etc.
I want to do the same thing except have the WRV210 accept the VPN connection. I looked into IPSec VPN, because I figured that is what is required.
Has anybody got the WRV210 VPN set up to accept a Microsoft VPN connection with a username/password?
I don't want my friend to have to install the QuickVPN client. We got things set up so that he can automatically connect when he boots up his machine.

I've "heard stories" over the years of guys who have been able to do it, but it's been rare. Most people who have the wrv210 use quickvpn, greenbow, or some other comparable client.
How exactly is your friend set up, by the way?

I called Linksys the other day, just on a chance. I actually got somebody knowledgable, and he said the WRV210 does not act as a PPTP server, therefore it cannot accept a connection from a Microsoft XP client. Fortunately I am able to sell the router to somebody I know who can use it.

This is true. If you wanted to use PPTP via the WRV210, it does support GRE (Protocol 47). Therefore, if you set up a device behind it as a VPN server (i.e., Microsoft Server, SSL Explorer) then you can still use it.
The RV042/RV016/RV082 models are the only linksys routers that support "on-board" PPTP clients. Short of that, you'd need to use the quickvpn client or set up a vpn server that will have traffic directed to it via the WRV210.
