Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Very reliable for my small network (16Mbit DSL, up to three notebooks running Windows 7 RC, one internet radio, one wifi equipped mobile phone running Windows Mobile 6.1) as long as I do not enable N-mode wireless on my notebooks. If I do, wireless drops every few minutes.

N-Mode (that is 300Mb); plain G is rock solid.

Drahnier, have you upgraded to the March 2009 firmware yet? There are others who had your problem with the old firmware and got rock-solid performance after upgrading.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Yes, I did upgrade. Before that the system was completely useless (that is, I had disconnects within seconds, needed to power-cycle the device to get it running again). I was about to return it when I found a beta version of the new firmware on the net.

So you would only stay in G mode and not using N mode?

Do you pair the router up with a G or N client card?

I am looking to upgrade from my old X550 and now seeing your posting I am hesitating again...

Please share your thought.

Yes, only G mode.

Currently it's a mixture of G and GN clients, although I have N disabled on those clients (Intel 5300 AGN).

Probably not related, but have had problems with Intel drivers lately on Windows. Try to upgrade to the latest drivers for your OS.

During the last two months I have tested with three or four versions of Intel drivers; no luck so far. I'm currently using version 12.4.3.9. As far as I known, this is the latest version released by Intel.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Well, I've just received my x-550NH (equal to NBG-460N) via a friend in the States. I'll give it a good stress test this weekend. The clients are a mix of Atheros and Ralink 802.11n, all capable of 300 Mbps in theory.

Interesting that they ship this with both the 3 normal screw-in antennas as well as the space-age 3 x 6 dbi 'carousel' antenna. I'll test both options through a few brick walls :-)

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

There a many posting in the internet saying 460N has a problem with client cards that come with Intel's ABGN chipset.

Even with the firmware upgrade the problem is still there.

The wireless connection will be on and then suddently disconnect.

If you use P2P software or other heavy ftp sharing software the router does not offer stable connection like its previous model X550.

Dandemon,

Initially I plan to buy this router during my trip to Portland Oregon in the upcoming weekend. But now I change my mind to wait & see. Pls share your experience with your router. There are a lot of users in Taiwan who suffer the connection stability since last fall and so far no solution offered by Zyxel yet. I would like to know if you still encounter similar problem. Thx

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

I used to have trouble when connecting with 2 laptops at the same time, always lost connection, until I updated to V3.60(AMX.4).

Now everything works fine, one laptop is connecting via Broadcom 802.11/g, the other with Atheros 928x 802.11/n at the same time.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

I'm going to do a detailed write-up on this, and have already emailed Zyxel in the US about some issues.

Brief observations so far:

1. Its basic routing performance is superb. Web browsing etc is noticeably snappier than on the DIR-855 Dlink (which is not a bad unit by itself).

2. Wireless signal strength is also amazing - that antenna array in the x-550NH package is big, beautiful, and it WORKS. 91% signal strength through two double brick walls.

3. Atheros clients connect reliably and stay connected. I've been getting the odd disconnect with Ralink hardware, namely an EW-7416APn access point (802.11n). How often this happens needs more testing. I'm wondering if the wireless QoS on the router side may be an issue.

4. The firmware is very sparse on features and has a very 'beta' feel to it. There are some silly mistakes, such as being forced to give your upload speed in whole Mbps following the March 09 update.

Does the AMX 4 (ie international) firmware allow changing the wireless protocol? The latest US firmware for the equivalent NBG-460N doesn't give any choice. You just get 802.11n/g/b.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

OK, after more stress testing..

1. Broadcom and Atheros clients connect fine and perform well. This includes an older Broadcom 802.11g card.

2. Ralink clients (and reportedly Intel clients) do NOT connect reliably on current firmware, dropping the link regularly.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Thanks for testing Dandemon.

So the conclusiton is if you pair the router with Athero or Broadcom's client cards, in either N or G mode, wireless connection is fine. No suddent drop.

Avoid Ralink or Intel's client cards for sure then.

Can you test the connection in B mode?

I have a wireless print server that is B standard.

If the connection quality with a B client card is ok, then I decide to pick up this router again.

Another question, which brand offers Broadcom's client card? I know Zyxel probably offer client cards with Athero's chipset, but I am not familiar with Broadcom's products.

Can this router limit the download speed by ethernet port?
reply
Dandemon @ 4th Aug 08:00PM:
Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

B mode works fine, Jinino. You just can't set that from the router side. Zyxel support (US) tells me that this must have been overlooked, and they are asking HQ (presumably in Taiwan) to restore the option to broadcast B, G, N or combinations of them.

No, you can't limit download speed by Ethernet port.

The firmware is clearly a 'work in progress' on this unit and they are looking at a few other things I've raised. For example the Bandwidth Management setting for VOIP is TCP, while VOIP traffic is nearly all UDP - that kind of thing.

I've also raised the issue of interconnecting with Intel and Ralink but I suspect that might go on the waiting list. 802.11n is supposedly about to get standardised and that might help a lot.

Concur! The X-550N is the same as the 460N, the NH adds the funky antenna system. Seems you got lucky!!

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Quick update... there's no doubt this router's raw grunt - processing and wireless - is the best I've ever seen.

If you can live with the beta-like firmware and you don't have Intel or Ralink wireless clients, it's streets ahead of anything in the consumer space and probably some lower-end business routers too. I just wish they'd pay some attention to the firmware, it needs plenty of loving..

ZyXEL have just posted a new firmware: V3.60(AMX.5). Apparently, it features a new WLAN driver. For the first time, I can now use 802.11n without experiencing frequent disconnects.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

downloaded and installed the NGB-460N AMX.5 on my x550N which has been gathering dust due to disconnects. I am happy to say that the new firmware has been stable for 10 hours with one VPN tunnel and SIP phone running on it.

search V3.60(AMX.5) for download site it is not on X550N page yet.

Note that when upgrading through the router page it appears to do nothing, just leave it on the page as it will take like 2-5 minutes before it starts to upload the .bin file.

I will report back in a few days as the previous firmware couldnt go more than 2 days before the wireless quit and the WAN went down.

Well it has been 10 days with the new 460 firmware loaded on my 550N, Not one drop, no disconnects for my VOIP box and one IPSEC tunnel running. Fantastic, finally This box lives up to the Zyxel name. One last problem to figure out and it is perfect. I cannot figure out how to let HTTPS and HTTP reach my Windows home server box. Using port forwarding doesn't seem to work, Anyone know any tricks? The firmware is different than my Zywall 35 and I cannot get this X550N to let my HTTP or HTTPS in.

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

csayers, I'm not sure you can specify firewall blockage by the kind of traffic.

On another topic... In Bandwidth Management, can you check the upload speed menu and see what speed setting options it gives you? Is it only MB/Sec or KB/Sec? I need to check whether they did what I asked...

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

Dandemon,
The first page shows Mbps but I think it was that way in the March firmware, I am not using the BWM feature but it still shows the VOIP class as using TCP when it should be UDP.

Also Dan, I want to open via NAT a port , not block the HTTP and HTTPS Traffic, is that more clear? Any ideas?

Hi
I also use NBG-460. Also I connect one Linksys PAP2 on it. But I have the problem, the nobody can reach me from outside. I have to set up port forwarding with udp. But how and where can I do it? And wich ports schould I take? port Nr 5060?

Kind Regards. Simon

Re: ZyXEL NBG-460N

I had a PAP2 connected to mine too, Simon. The trick is to enable PnP in the router and let the PAP2 navigate its own way through the firewall. Don't open up any ports or try to second-guess the router - you'll just get in the way!
