Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Today I received a confirmation email from Bell. In it it said the TVs should be relatively close to the coaxial outlet. Since it's IPTV can't it be run only on network cables? All my TVs have a network cable close to them. If it can't should I run a coaxial cable from my router to to where I have the bundle of coaxial cables witch run throughout my house?

I am wondering how they will setup the system in my house. Also if anyone has some speed test on this service it would be great so see them!

Thx

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

They only provide one modem/terminal and from there for television they run coax from the terminal to each TV. Internet is using straight Ethernet. They will install the terminal where the telephone and coax wiring are coming into your residence.

Ok
Do you also know what the speeds to expect? Is it 20mb for one receiver and 30mb for 3? Also what are the upload speeds?

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

I believe the downstream is still 24 Mbps and 1 Mbps upstream. Note this is SHARED between TV and internet so 3 TV streams will give you much less bandwidth for internet when in use.

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

It can run on either/or. Mine is running on both (1 ether, 2 coax.) The Modem has 4 100bt ethernet ports and 1 coax which can be split.

Speeds are very nice - but vary with how much TV you are watching.

This was with no TV, I think in my case the modem reports being synced at 30/15

I thought that you started with something like 24mb and for each extra receiver you got they gave you 5mb plus. 24mb+5mb+5mb=34mb? I think that's what I was first told a few months ago when I first spoke to them. I forgot to ask them when I ordered.

Not sure.

The tab I click on to get the line info says "VDSL" but a few things on that page say VDSL2.

But given that the same page says my max line rate is 60 or 70 mbps I supose it would have to be.

Since you already have the service, I have a few questions.
Is the router locked or will I have access to it? I have a small server at home and some security cameras, will I be able to set up everything so I can view them remotely?
Is video on demand included in the $75 package?
Are you happy with this service? Have you had any problems?
Is there a maximum bandwith fee after you go above 60gb?
Does internet or tv have much down time?
Thx

Also is there anyone else on these forums with this service? What is your opinion and what are your speeds?

Also, is the modem locked to your Sympatico account, or can you login from another provider?

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Router seems unlocked. I can click on just about everything on the page that shows up when I go to 192.168.2.1. I have port forwarding rules (including a slingbox and web/nanny cam) for about 6 different things setup and have changed the wifi settings from their defaults.

Video on Demand is included but I haven't found any free content yet so I haven't tried it.

The whole home PVR rocks. And being able to record/watch live up to 4 streams is nice too. I can record two things and watch another live while someone else watches a recorded show elsewhere. The channel changes are almost fast enough so you can "surf" again like you used to on analogue cable. I've had some skipping issues but they seem to have been resolved now that my previous wiring has been replaced. No other outages as such but overall, I'd say it's not as stable as the expressvu service I had before. I just replaced the last coax I had with a dedicated ethernet so give me a week to see if it's stable now. But it worked fine through the rain storms we've had recently so rain/snow fade is no longer an issue.

Wifi coverage is ok but I had better range with the previous 2wire gateway. (once I turned up the power on the 2wire)

The Sympatico usage page says $1.25/GB up to $30 max, I haven't called in about insurance programs but another user said they weren't available. I mean to call in and find out now that the $5/40Gb offer is out there.

So relatively happy. The TV experience has some pluses and some minuses but the internet speeds are very nice. It's the first speed increase I've seen where even web browsing seems visibly faster.

Picture quality (comparing back to back when I had both esxpressvu and IPTV for a day) was better for SD on IPTV and about the same for HD.

Channel selection is still less then what expressvu offers but it's nice to have the US Buffalo stations back instead of Boston.

Madwand: haven't tried to log in with another provider since I don't have an id for one. The "b1" & pass section is not locked on the router.

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Just ordered the Extra package, due to be installed in a few weeks and I'll report back on how it goes.

Interestingly when I called for availability, they ran two tests. The first one failed (maybe a fiber loop test?) and so I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to sign up. The second test apparently came back as "29,000" which meant that I had a profile of "27", which they said would be good enough for "two TVs plus Internet." I only have one TV, and consistent with what others here have written about a TV requiring 5mbit, they said I can expect 23mbit down, 9mbit up for Internet.

I was also concerned because I'd had to cancel Sympatico Internet previously as I wasn't getting the advertised throughput, and they claimed that was likely due to an old POTS switch between my house and the CO. Apparently when they do the install they'll replace that, though. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

After suffering through a Rogers HD PVR for so long, I'm basically willing to do anything to get off of it.

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Beltzner I also had ordered The Extra package when I first ordered two weeks or so ago. The day after installation I called Bell up and told them I want the Super. I think it's worth it... the extra channels you get are actually really good and when you search through the guide you usually won't get a message saying you aren't subscribed to this channel.

Well what I can tell you of installation is it takes a few hours. They first test your line where it enters your house and they usually like a dedicated line from where the line enters the house to the modem/router. They require the main box to be connected through an internet cable and the rest are ok if they are connected through coaxial cable. My house had all internet cables and it was fine.

The service is great, quality is great the only thing that sucks is the Bandwidth is only 60gb a month and you get charged a maximum of $30 if you go above that.

Here is one of my speed tests:

Be careful how you interpret that.

Bell has sent Disconnect/Abuse letter to people who did something like 300 or 500-gigs in the past.

One person posted his letters here.

Got an Abuse warning at 500-gig.

Bell didn't tell him, and refused to tell him, what limit to stay under. He kept it at 300-gig or a bit less.

Then he got his disconnect letter for continued abuse.

So take that 30$ unlimited with a very large grain of salt and don't believe everything from Bell unless you get it in writing from Bell defining it.

but why does flummox have aprofile of 30/15 then?

I think the profile begins at 24mb/9mb and for each extra tv +5mb. The thing is that it really depends on your line and well I have done many speed tests and they all come up similar even if I have one or two tvs on my speed tests come out the same. The service is really great the speeds are fine. When I had 3 tvs on 2 on HD I think I still got 16mb. Ill do a few tests with the tvs when im back in Toronto Wednesday and post them here.

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Question:

Does IPTV use the same PPPoE session as your internet, or does it have its own PPPoE session ?

In terms of technology, does a VDSL modem support multiple ATM destinations ? (aka: one pointing to a BAS, and one pointing to the IPTV server) or is it like a normal ADSL modem with just one destination which Bell then disregards because the ATM is terminated at the DSLAM ?

Does IPTV use its own IP subprotocol, or does it use UDP/TCP or another known protocol ?

Since IPTV would be pretty much unidirectional, is it a case where you ask for a channel by sending a IP packet using your normal PPPoE connection to a normal IP destination, and the IPTV server then uses dedicated links to your DSLAM at which point, the DSLAM/AMAS inserts the IPTV packets into your PPPoE stream to your modem ?

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Looks like everyone found the router page. incidentally my upstream has dropped to 7040kbps (payload) from ~10000. My downstream (again payload) is still 30064.

jfmezei: They look like separate sessions. The main router status page has Wan connection 1 and 2 sections both stating PPPOE and a different VLAN ID after that (and different IP addresses too). WAN1 seems to be internet as it has a public IP address (ie if I ping myself from outside that's the IP that shows up). WAN2 shows a 10.x.x.x IP address so assume it's the IPTV network. No idea on the rest of your questions. Beyond my technical ability but I see no mention of ATM type terminology anywhere in the router pages other than the VLAN stuff. (eg PVCs etc.)

JF, VDSL2 has NO atm. IT is all ethernet with VLANs, 802.1q and Q-in-Q and all that good stuff.

In every IPTV setup I've seen (the one I know the most about is ATT's Uverse) there are two distinct VLANs on the WAN side. All of them use Multicasting on the core, edge and inside the home to stream the same content to multiple STB's.

You can learn more about protocols and ports by reading up on U-verse's setup. Both Bell and ATT use MS IPTV AKA Mediaroom.

Hi, I'm a Bell Entertainment Customer, I recently had to move my equipment, thus removing the AC Power out of it. When I restored it, I had lost both Internet and IPTV. I have been able to recover the WAN 1 (VLAN 35) Internet, by re-applying my internet ID and Password provided by Bell.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to restore my IPTV service due to the WAN 2 (VLAN 36) IPTV to be Down. I have searched everywhere in my documents and there is nothing to be found about the the credential to apply in the router for this service.

I tried all the possible credential(even blank) that I have and none work, always returning the System Log:

pppd info [PPP36]Remote message: Access Denied
pppd err [PPP36]PAP authentication failed

Their Customer Service is very poor on the weekend for this service, saturday 8:00 to 17:30 and closed on sunday... and this occured at 18:30.. badluck

Under "WAN Setting" you have to choose "VLAN + 2 PPPoE". Then, enter the following on the page that follows:

[Internet]
VLAN ID: 35
User Name: b1XXXXXX
Password: (your password)

[IPTV]
VLAN ID: 36
User Name: bell/wvXXXXXX@iptv

In the [IPTV] section you're basically entering your b1XXXXXX ID, but with a different prefix and the "@iptv" suffix.

I hope that helps!

Does it HAVE to be connected via ethernet... or can it also be connected via coax? Or does it depend on the quality of the coax connection? Does anyone have their main box connected via coax?

Reason I ask is our main TV is in a room without any ethernet wiring. If it DOES require ethernet wiring, will the Bell install guys do it for you? Do they do a nice job (ie fishing through the wall, installing a jack), or do they do a crappy Rogers type job (ie staple it to the walls)?

Each box can be hooked up with either Ethernet or coaxial. However, if you want to use coaxial, you have to connect the DSL modem to your house's coaxial wiring (so that the coaxial wiring in your house carries the TV signal).

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

Is it possible that the coax might carry 10-base-2 ethernet (the ethernet used before most here were born) ?

If you have multiple TVs, can they share the same coax run, or must they each have their own independant/separate coax ?

Since the set-top box needs to talk "data" to the remote IPTV server to select a channel, I doubt the coax would be carrying a simple channel modulated on channel 3 or whatever. And since I assume you can watch either SD or HD programming, there would need to be some ability to switch definition.

Does the 10.* IP address get assigned to the router who then NATs this to each set-top box, or does each set top box get its own IP address ?

If they use NAT, it becomes hard for the telco to control how many TVs are being used.

Re: Bell Entertainment (IPTV) Setup

The coaxial cable doesn't carry a CATV signal--it carries an IP signal, exactly what the Ethernet ports would provide. It is based on HPNA technology, which should give you at least 100 mbps--the equivalent of the Ethernet ports.

JF, the DSLAM can terminate PPPoE sessions. It does have Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions and I believe in can inject Multicast into a unicast L2TP session as well.
