Strange cable internet problem

I have a problem with my cable connection. For the past two weeks or so, I've been experiencing either a slow connection (1/10 the speed) or a total loss of sync. What is weird is that the time this occurs is almost on a schedule.

The problems begin at about 10:30 to 11:00 AM and almost always go away around 9:30 to 10:00 PM.

When the connection is slow, it won't synch if I cycle the power once or twice. I have had success the past two days with cycling the power and unplugging/plugging the cable line a couple dozen times. When I try that the connection works again, at full speed. I'm certain that if I hadn't done that that the connection would be slow.

The cable company sent someone out one day, and they did something (outside, never came to the door) that fixed the connection for 1.5 days before it became problematic again. Someone is supposed to come out tomorrow, and they will want to come inside. I wanted to know if someone has a clue about what the problem may be in case the cable company is still unable to fix the problem.

Re: Strange cable internet problem

Well, it was supposed to be 6 Mbps / 512 Kbps after an upgrade they did a month ago (for everyone), but my speed never got faster than the 4 Mbps the package originally had.

During the sluggish periods, it goes down to about 1/10 of that speed. Today has been better than most days. It was slow for a brief period but resolved itself. I almost want to say that there is some pattern to to my neighbors (I'm in an apartment) usage or something - like they weren't here today so things were better.

Re: Strange cable internet problem

Sorry, I never knew the modem had a menu similar to my router. By the way, I'm sure it is not the router because the problem is still there when I connect directly to my computer.

I'm currently getting 4 Mbps.

Downstream Channel
Downstream Frequency 99000000 Hz
Lock Status Locked
Modulation 256 QAM

Oops, didn't paste this part:

DOCSIS1.1 Quality of Service Parameters
Direction Upstream Downstream
SFID 0x425 0x426
SID 0x212 N/A
Traffic Priority 1 1
Max Sustained Traffic Rate (bps) 512000 6148000
Max Transmit Burst (bytes) 3044 3044
Min Reserved Traffic Rate (bps) 0 0
Service Flow Scheduling Type Best Effort N/A

It is interesting that the max downstream is 6 Mbps even though I never exceed 4 Mbps in any downloads or online speed tests.

Capt-

Your upstream power levels are at the maximum (58).

During the daytime hours - it is warmer out, and as it gets hotter, cable signals will degrade a few dB's each way.

What I am betting is that your upstream is failing, and this in turn is causing the degradation you are experiencing.

I would check any splitters from outside to the location you are using to make sure one hasn't failed.

Definitely let the tech know to check the upstream levels.

Re: Strange cable internet problem

Yeah, what JeepMatt said.

If you get your upstream fixed, your modem will be much faster as well.

Bad splitters, RG59 cable (the skinny stuff) and bad fittings are the most likely problem. However you may need to have your cableco come out and take a look, it could be something on their end.
