Network Mapping

Not sure I should put his here or in broadband but here we go.

I have a few network devices,eg, printers laptops and cisco devices. Im currently using The Dude free network mapping. however ito nly shows per device not per port like another program called Intermapper. I'm just wondering what you folks use for mapping your networks beides drag and drop on Visio

Re: Network Mapping

Hello,

Visio works pretty well. I use it all the time at the office. Some of our engineering staff will use CAD to do network diagrams.. I have also gone the very simple route and just used plain old pen and paper and than scanned into a jpeg format...

This is one cat there are many ways skin.

Re: Network Mapping

If you're talking automated network mappers The Dude is probably about as good as you can get for free. What are you trying to do that The Dude won't support?

Another free option I've heard about but haven't tried is Spiceworks (»www.spiceworks.com/free-network-···oftware/).

If you really want serious network mapping, you might consider something like Lan Surveyor (starts at around $500, but you can use a trial version free for 21 days--download at »www.solarwinds.com/register/regi···0000D7uh ).

If you're just talking about producing network diagrams, I second Visio. It's well worth learning how to use it just to get the quality diagrams it can produce.

Another good free network mapping tool is maltego... »www.paterva.com/maltego/ There is a free version as well as paid version...

The best part of it for me is it's open source... :)

If ease of use is close to the top of your list spice will be a better choice.

EDIT: Word of caution as much as like it. I have only deployed this at home. I have not deployed it on any sort of large scale environment.
