[Connectivity] Terrible Comcast pings, high latency, drops

Regardless of their video offerings - I have always been impressed with Comcast's rock solid Internet access. That is until about a month ago...

I've swapped out modems, had an on-site service call (they confirmed problems and said they would notify the network div.)

Latencies as high as 1200ms are common. The modem looses connection altogether about once a day or more. This suspiciously began around the same time they ramped up the digital switchover / DTA distribution.

My neighbors are seeing the same thing -

I've placed yet another call for service. This is ridiculous.
Perhaps I should sign up for their "Triple Play"/promotion to force them to address it - as I'm quite sure VoIP wouldn't work in these conditions... :(

Smokepings don't lie -

And how 'bout that blazing speed:

We can better diagnose your issue if you post that info.

Hey - Mr. not helpful -
I did post a link to the monitoring page - which is live.

I can better help you diagnose if you communicate what "that info" means...

Re: [Connectivity] Terrible Comcast pings, high latency, drops

"That info" is this:
1) Your location: City and State.

2) A description of the problem.

3) Is the issue intermittent, constant or does it occur at a specific time of day?

4) Your modem make, model & firmware version. How to find firmware version: Access modem at »192.168.100.1

5) Describe any home networking if applicable. (i.e. routers, hubs, adapters, etc.)

6) List any firewall and/or anti-virus software you have installed. Include what version you have.

If you have an issue with slow or fluctuating speed:

• What HSI Tier you are subscribed to: (i.e. 6000/1000, 12000/2000, etc.)

• Post a Speed Test (from speedtest.net preferably)

• Post a Tweak Test

• Post what browser/browsers you are using while running a speed test.

• Post modem's Signal Levels

• Post modem's Log Entries

• Give a description of the cable & splitters configuration in your home leading to the modem.

If you have issues with packet loss, latency, or routing:

• Post a trace route to the server you're having issues with. Use PingPlotter for the best results. Download here: PingPlotter

• A simple line test can be used from the Tools page: Line Packet Loss Testing

^^ No one here can really help you without at least some of that info.

The smokeping looks fine except last friday, satuday and sunday... you could have been doing heavy downloading or uploading though.

Re: [Connectivity] Terrible Comcast pings, high latency, drops

Good luck. I had been pleased with Road Runner high speed internet. The one time I had problems they diagnosed my system over the phone and then sent a service technician a couple days later. He put new drop to the house that cured the problems. Now that Comcast has bought out Road Runner in Houston we don't have service. The line drops frequently and all the service center tells you is switch out your modem and they claim no one else in neighborhood is having problems which simply isn't true. I'm thankful I still have analog phone line as my neighbor who has Comcast digital phone has poor to no service and can't get any help from Comcast. If he has an emergency he can't be sure he can even make a call out. Another neighbor switched his cable TV to ATT Uverse a few months ago because he couldn't get service either.

Know that I have had the exact same problems for the last three months with Comcast. I have had a dozen techs here and no one knows what is wrong. They have found damaged and broken equipment from the Head End all the way to my house. Each time they come out they fnd some problem or another and things start to work and they leave, or they can not figure it out and they call someone else.

I will going to Comcast this Monday and start demanding my refunds. Last time I spent 8 months getting them to fix a problem and got a 6 month refund. I really do nto care about the money, I just want the service I pay for and a company that will stand behind their service. You can not get that from Comcast unless you go to their main office and start screaming for a Service Manager.

Here is my connection tonight much like every night. Mind you I pay for 16 MB down and 2 MB up. WHen my service works I normally get 34 MB down and 3.9 MB up. I am only 2 blocks from the Fiber Head End.

That is an easy fix. Move to Surewest territory. PURE FIBER. When I was in Lincoln I had 30000down/30000up . No need to use any type of modem also. The fiber is brought into the home and plugs directly into you NIC card. Identification is using you Nic Card Mac. There is a fiber connection then there is a PURE fiber connection. Big differance there. None of that stupid powerboost stuff Comcast trys to sell. I was able using the site Camfrog.com and there proserver software to host a room there that would hold 25-30 people with cams and also having music in the room. NO lag. As a tech you prob know the amount of bandwidth required to recieve on that computer 25-30 users, and then send out to each the music and whatever cams they may have opened. NO LAG at all with surewest.

I've been trying to get Surewest where I live for a long time now. I live in the 95828 Calvine area.
