Re: Bandwidth Notification Still Busted
I had my charge removed as well. It was only $7, but explained to them that the bandwidth meter was off by 1 GB and wanted to be charged for the proper amount and not the additional GB and they removed all the charges instead of just the 1 GB. I would of happily paid for the proper amount, but wasn't about to complain that they removed the full charge. :)

I just got Augusts $30 bandwidth charge removed, I suggest everyone call in, refuse to pay it, explain that the meter is completely broken, reference BBR and threaten to move your services to Bell.
They should do this every month until Cogeco has a working meter. Broken meter = no charges are valid.

Makes me wonder if there is anyone at Cogeco with a grain of Morality, Clearly the Meter is not working. Can you imagine all the users who do not use this website just dutifully paying the overage charge.
Why do we tolerate these kinds of business practices in Canada, if this isn't stealing then it's certainly criminal negligence.

Yeah, they probably have a policy that if anyone calls in complaining about bandwidth they'll have the charges reversed.
Sucks for the people who don't call, don't know, they're getting scammed.

Just got my bill and was charged $30.00 in overage fees for going 31 gig over 60 cap.....i then called and cancelled.....phone is next. For the life of me i can't see how this can be acceptable legally or morally.
There is just so much wrong here.

wow bad day....
got home opened cogeco bill and i have 30.25$ overrage charges. I was liek WTH i didnt even use my internet this month as my ps3 is broken so no demos to dl and i dont have a good pc to DL PC games. And i havnt downloaded any movies as my ps3 is broken. It says that i have used 60 GIG over my 10GIG limit.
When i saw that i was like wth....i am on basic lite how did i use 60GB. So i call them up and they tell em that you have been using over 1.5 GB oer night 0_0. I was like not even why would i use that when i dotn have anything i need to DL. Anyway after about 5 call transfers between diff departments they told me if i upgraded they would wave charges...
I was like maaaaan >_ but i did anyway as it was only about 10$ and i was gonna upgrade anyway. And that was for august. ANd then another hit...I have already used 41 Gigs for this month as well 0_0. Thats why they bumped me up to standard. Whats going on? nothing is running on my system.
about 2 weeks ago...some guy from cogeco came to my house and asked if i could run a line from my box to my neighbors. I figured that maybe he needed an extra connection or somethin and i said ya sure. Could this have caused this?
well i have used about 200MB today, if the meter shows over 1GB for sep 25th usage tomorrow something is up....
I have also changed my router pass so lets see...
so my bill went from 119$ with tax to 126 or so =/. I am gonna switch down from standard to the 7MBps one later next month.
cogeco sucks man =/

still not accurate.
my personal counter says I did 811 mb yesterday, Cogeco's counter says I did 961 mb or about 19% more than I actually used.
What a ripoff.

As a current Teksavvy user I thought I would give Cogeco another try, but this is a mess. Bad enough the caps are so low/prices too high, but to have a counter that far off is crazy. So my choices are to either support Bell & their evil empire, or support Cogeco who rips its customers off with over priced services and a faulty bandwidth counter. I can't believe how pathetic ISPs in Canada have become. It's getting to the point its just not worth it anymore.

Thank the CRTC for this. This would have never gotten to the extend it has had Bell not been allowed to fuck around with GAS customers.

Virus? Unsecured WiFi? Someone else in the house using the connection?
If you are that convinced it is wrong, I would suggest disconnecting the modem completely for 24 hours.
If you still have usage, then it would seem that either Cogeco has something screwed up internally or someone has cloned your MAC.
If the usage drops to zero, then you either have a virus or an wireless leech.

Re: Bandwidth Notification Still Busted
Ya, ill look into that. I have a router but its encrypted. After the phoen call with cogeco and the itnernet upgrade, i went and changed the password and gave it a stronger key, aslo made it hidden.
But still i check the usage this morning and it was 1.25Gigs....I downloaded like one file yesterday and that was just about 3mb. Did a bit of browsing for a airline ticket but thats about it.
Ill disconnect it for a day and see how that goes. Or maybe disconnect the router and hook ti up via Ethernet for a day.

Re: Bandwidth Notification Still Busted
If you can, disconnect the modem completely.
If it's a virus, disconnecting the router won't help.
If your MAC has been cloned then the usage will go up even if your modem is offline.
So having the modem offline will quickly tell you if the problem is at your location or elsewhere.
I can't see the line to your neighbour's being the problem as it won't pass through your modem.

Ok, another Q. Before i switched for this month, i had used up 41 GB of bandwidth on my 10GB lite plan(41/10). So i switched and now the meter shows 41/60GB used. I am guessing that i will not get charges as i have upgraded my plan? cause thats what the lady on the phone said, i just want to confirm.

So, I look at my bandwidth meter a few minutes ago just to make sure nothin' funny has been going on and to my surprise...
I didn't even use my machine on the 1st of November, 3 hours tops on L4D, which only used a few MB max. There is absolutely no way I could have racked up 15GB on Nov 1st UNLESS the meter is recording data from October and rolling it over into November. It's the only thing that explains this, 25% of my bandwidth in one day? Complete bullshit.

I think you should phone Cogeco support so they can explain what a burden you are to them and how you're making everyone else's experience poorer.
Of course you may have allowed your PC to be compromised thus compromising their entire network
What you should do is upgrade and send them even more money for your continual abuse of their network.
As usual the meter is not broken and you are responsible for all usage imagined or otherwise
PS we will be increasing your bill for network improvements so that you may enjoy your Cogeco Experience more fully
Could I interest you in Cogeco home phone?

What gets me is if they end up cutting you off and if you have Cogeco for your home phone service, you will still have access to 911 etc.. but if you use third part VOIP aka vonage etc, you're SOL.

If they ever cut off a user who has a competing phone like Vonage while that user is willing to pay for overages I personally would be calling a lawyer the second it happened. I don't give a shit what their policy might be .... I would go straight to a judge and make sure I made this ridiculous behaviour embarrass the hell out of Cogeco Publicly.

How would this embarrass them? You're connecting a device which uses internet bandwidth, whether it's a PC downloading illegal movies, a gaming console or a VoIP phone... there's no legal differentiation or liability on Cogeco's part for whatever device you're breaking policies with.

Ah, now that you're editing your spelling it's a little clearer; but no, once again I didn't say that using a 3rd party VoIP service is breaking Cogeco's policy.
You entirely missed the point, perhaps because you don't understand how VoIP service works - it uses bandwidth. Consoles use bandwidth. PC's downloading illegal movies use bandwidth. Whatever you plug into your Cogeco modem uses bandwidth.
How you go over your prescribed bandwidth limitation, which can lead into a disconnection of services, is entirely up to you and no embarrassment to Cogeco; it's more so the extreme melodrama of a non-issue.
