[TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
Hi, I have Road Runner internet in the Dallas area. I've been having intermittent packet loss since January (which is when I had it installed). They are always able to confirm that there is a problem with my signal while I am on the phone with them. Of course, the problem never happens when the technician is here. When it does happen, at random, I have between 10% - 30% packet loss and it lasts for several hours at a time. My cable modem has been swapped out numerous times, firmware updated, lines checked, connections changed, etc. Last technician said that the "pad" was wrong on the amplifier feed outside.. which he corrected, but it made no difference. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
did you check your signal levels on the modem page?
»192.168.100.1
if that doesnt work and if you have the same scientific atlanta cable box as i do press and hold select button until you see the message icon flash on the front of the box then press the info button and in there you will see your signal level. it wont be exactly the same as your cable modem but it will be close.

My downstream power level goes down to almost -10 when I am having the packet loss. Of course, whenever the technician shows up, it's back up to -6.

I had a tech out here yesterday who did something to increase my power level to the -6 range give or take. Let's see if it holds (fingers crossed).

Wierd, my signal levels have been pretty horrible lately but I have not ever had any packet loss issues here where I live.
Like one previous user said its probably something in your neighborhood, could be an overloaded node perhaps.
When my signal levels get the way they are right now I only really have problems with some of the channels on tv, especially the HD channels.

yea but they are however borderline of the drop off point (which is -15). I have not had any connection issues yet but if it keeps this way by the end of the week I might just have to call them up and see what the deal is and hope I get someone on the line who can understand what I say and isnt a total retard.

Maybe you just haven't noticed the packet loss or it happens when you aren't using your internet... I can't imagine any kind of stability at -12. My packet loss was intermittent, once a month it would happen for a few hours, except for July. It just started to get worse this past week and now I think the tech finally nailed it. Fingers crossed.

My power level is currently at -18.51 dBmv of course I am using a splitter for my tv tuner card.. Without the splitter it is around -14.5. Hopefully the tech can fiddle it to fixed
Its been acting bad for about a week. TV receptions is bad as always though :P

Don't forget that the higher the quality of the cable the better the signal. I had a wal-mart special that I was going to use but noticed how horrible the signal was, at the time i think it was about -12 then when I hooked up the cable they dropped the signal got cut in half and went up to about -6.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
We have been having outages almost daily since mid-July in 75052 zip code. We added digital phone service about that time.
I have had 5 service technicians out, finding nothing wrong with signal strength or wiring issues. Replaced modem twice. They ran a new direct wire from yard box to the house connection. Phone reps have detected packet losses of up to 68% one minute, while no loss the next minute.
Last Saturday, a supervisor technician was here and checked the entire street, finding "all sorts of issues" (his words). He said he was going to check every connection coming from the "node" to try to correct the issue. He admitted that others in our area were experiencing similar problems.
Despite all this, we are still having short internet outages (once or twice a day), which also take out the digital phone service. Cable TV never goes out. I have kept a list of service calls to TW (19 phone calls to them since July 17) and am not sure how much longer I can deal with the problem. I've tried to be patient!
Another supervisor technician is due out this afternoon because of short outages yesterday. And prior to July, we rarely had problems.
Any others still having issues in Grand Prairie?
JR

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
I have had similar problems up in McKinney. It started with almost daily outages that would last anywhere from about 30 minutes to several hours. Miraculously, after doing nothing, the modem would eventually synch up. Then I started having problems with voice quality with my VoIP service. Working with my provider, doing ping plots, tracing routes etc., they indicate it is a problem with the internet connectivity and a jitter/latency problem on the TWC side.
TWC sent a tech out last week and he changed a splitter and a "face plate" (?) at the curb to reduce the upstream power level to 50dBmV as he was convinced that was the problem. Of course, no improvement. I spent hours on the phone last night with TWC, their help desk, a supervisor and even Tier 3 and they said as long as I could browse the internet 'OK', which I can when it is up, then I am SOL as far as them doing anything about the "quality" of the connection affecting a third party VoIP. I think that is total BS and I told them I will be contacting AT&T to install U-Verse and I will drop TWC internet and cable TV once that installation is complete. They don't seem to care.
I don't know if it is just a coincidence, but it seems to me that about the same time all of my problems started our IP address changed from something starting with 209 and now it is a 173 address. That would have been some time in July as well. I also mentioned this to them and of course was told that made no difference.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
Actually if it is a new IP address, it may be causing problems. I know that in the FiOS forum back when Verizon bought a whole chunk of new IP addresses, people were having speed issues and connectivity issues to sites that were on and off. That died down as of a few months ago, but thought I might just point that out.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
A Time-Warner advanced tech was here again this afternoon. He said he could see other modems in area from his meter and that they were losing connectivity at the same time my modem does. Since they are typically short outages, and everything returns to normal quickly, TW is never in the area when an outage is actually happening.
Today I was given an "intermittent ticket" which has a special phone number to call when/if the next outage occurs. They will send someone here within the hour. Even with that, my outages often only last for only a few minutes at a time so it's unlikely that a service tech would get here while it is still down.
Regardless, there is plenty of evidence that an area-wide problem exists here based on what various techs have told me. Today's tech said it had been happening for "several weeks."
If I wasn't planning to move in the next few months, I would already be looking at alternatives. U-Verse put lines in here a year ago but still doesn't offer the service. So I'd be stuck with AT&T DSL if I did switch.

Well they tweaked it back to -6.5 so with my splitter it is -10 and I see a definite improvement in quality of my tv feed.
I am still using the cables I got from the installers
I think they just replaced the cable from the ground

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
Jackie,
I've been having the exact same problem as you (same zip code, 75052) since January. However, ever since the tech last came out, there's been improvement (with the exception of a total cable outage on Monday night). August was a bad month, but usually this problem happens at least once a month. I'll be sure to check in next month if it happens again.
And to anyone threatening to switch to AT&T U-Verse... my neighbor has it, and she's got the same problem!

Just an update --- No progress with this issue. I'm still having the problem. The last technician that came out confirmed that there was a problem with my node, and gave me a special # to call with a ticket #. However, when I called that #, the ticket # was invalid. And so I am going around in circles again.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
I am living in Grand Prairie as well and have the same problem. The problem actually started after the Monday night outage. I've been having on & off connection ever since then and most of the time my download speed is 2Mbps, occasionally 1Mbps (i have a 10Mbps service). I have had the same technician came checked twice but was told nothing he can do since all my equipment was good. What he told me was that TWC is upping the frequency in the whole south grand prairie area to have increase speed. This is the first area that they are doing in DFW hence being a guinea pig and have a lot of issues they are trying to correct(they are now doing the Arlington area). He said it might take a couple days or even weeks before it will go back to normal depending on how fast they could find and resolve the problem. I am thinking of calling them to get a refund for the month as it's almost unusable. I am having the problem as i am typing this.

they are probrably adding additional DOCSIS carriers. the rest of the metro already has 2-3 HSI carriers.
615MHz
783MHz
789MHz
What are they doing in arlington for work? I hope they are putting 1GHz electronics in the 870MHz equipment cases.

Re: [TWC] Very Bad Packet Loss in Grand Prairie TX since January
They are bumping up the frequency to 783000000 Hz to increase speed so that those with the turbo boost service will get up to 20Mbps while those with 10Mbps will get up to 15Mbps. It will be implement by stages to the whole DFW starting from the south. From what the tech said, they are trying to increase the line speed to be capable of doing 100Mbps, but of course it will be cap to whatever speed you subscribed to. I think they are trying to compete with At&t Uverse since Uverse had recently launched in this area and are having sales person going door to door. This is what shows on my modem which look pretty good but still experiencing the same problem. I think everyone with problem should keep calling them so that they will speed up solving the problem.

will arlington turn on the 783MHz docsis channel soon? I know that there is a problem with using 789MHz as a DOCSIS carrier they use 789MHz for 12 SD digital channels in grand prairie and arlington.

I'm in arlington (76012, west side, north of division) and have constant disconnects. It's as if someone were power cycling my modem every 2-3 minutes. It mostly happens in the mornings only but is frustrating because I don't get calls on the home phone when it happens. It's doing it now as I typwe this, I'll have to watch the activity lights before clicking post :(
