static ip's

does anyone have static ip's from WOW, do you get a block or a single static. Are any of the ports blocked? I am mostly looking to do ftp (21), web (80), rdp (3389) and back to my mac (500, AFP 548, 4500, 5223, 5354) ssl vpn (443). If anyone has info or has them let me know, I am not looking to do a exchange server @ home just some simple services so i can work from home/or access home while on the road

I do. $10 per IP. IOW, the "static IP" service provides 1 IP address. No ports blocked that I've even witnessed.

WOW's dynamic IPs are just as "static" as their static IPs. Your static IP is not guaranteed to stay the same, and your dynamic IP will rarely change. Paying $10/month for a "static" IP is a complete waste of money.

The "static IP" debate was already had here: »Static IP address

If you don't feel that it's worth $10, fine, don't "waste your money". For others, the money is well spent. Just depends on the circumstances. The OP's question had nothing to do with justifying the cost...

I know, I was a part of it.

I understand that different people can interpret value in very different ways. I am just curious to know what that $10/month gets you that I am not getting by not paying it. Because from my perspective, there is absolutely no difference.

If you register for a static address, it's very unlikely that the IP is going to change over a long period of time.

With a regular DHCP address, as long as you have a computer or a router that is almost always turned on, the liklihood of you ever getting a different IP address is very small indeed. I've been with WOW now for 3 years+ and I think I'm on my 2nd...or maybe 3rd IP in that time period.

Personally, for remotely connecting from another location or running an FTP for personal reasons, I would just stay with a dynamic IP and register with something like dyndns so that you can have a user friendly name to remember you address by.

For the record, I've not seen WOW implement any port blocking.

FWIW - When I first moved over to WOW for Internet, probably ~4 years ago, I too just took the normal "non-static" service with hopes/expectation that if I left my cable modem and router/firewall on 24x7, that the DHCP lease would always renew and I'd never lose my original IP. Unfortunately, that's not the way it turned out. I didn't keep a record, but I'd say my IP changed once every 1-2 months for about 6 months... then I switched over to the static service. Why? I have no clue... but I can tell you that WOW switched me onto totally different subnets... not just different IP within the same network. I'm not sure if they had infrastructure changes going on in my area, DHCP problems, load balancing, etc. All I know is that my dynamic service was very dynamic... and that presented problems for me since I needed to connect inbound, from work, to my home infrastructure. The $10/month was well worth the not spending hours every month reconfiguring my DNS, firewalls (home and work), and other associated service fees (at work).

Now, interestingly enough, my pricing came up for renewal about 3 months ago and I called retentions to get a better price. As part of that, I decided to drop the static IP service... and I still have the same IP as I had when I was static, and it has not changed. I'm not sure if this is because WOW never went back and un-provisioned my static service, or the dynamic re-leasing is now working as it should. I could check if people care, but would take some work to investigate... That said, I would have expected WOW to assign me to a new dynamically assigned netblock when I stopped the static service, but that doesn't appear to have occurred (yet).

I can get a new ip from wow anytime by changing one number.

LOL!

But if you leave that number alone, like most people normally would, your IP address generally won't change.
