DSL connection 3x slower then before.

As of right now my computers internet connection is downloading @ 416 kbps ( 40 kb's )

Before I got a new computer it was 3x that. I was wondering why it has changed and how I can change it back.

Also before with my old computer my internet would be at 416 kbps. When I had to replace my hard drive I used my sisters hard drive with all of her files still intact and it my internet connection jumped from 416 kbps to around 1000.

Is there any certain type of program that could of done that?

I have same issue with ATT DSL. The down speed will drop to very low level 800Kbps from 6Mbps around 8pm every day evening time. It is OK during daytime though. I have asked for tech support, but no help!!!

Re: DSL connection 3x slower then before.

I can't say this will help but for me a bit of background knowledge on line stats, and a new modem (D-Link DSL-2320B from »www.newegg.com) that displayed my adsl line stats was invaluable in fixing my own problems with a dsl 6.0mbps package from at&t in the DFW/Texas area. Going from an infuriatingly random service to what is now a caped out stable 6016/768 connection around the clock.

I found in particular »www.kitz.co.uk/adsl a useful resource in understanding SNR and attenuation. Once I got how it all worked and could see the line stats changing in real time, for me it was a matter of trial and error to find a spot that worked. I know how frustrating it is but if your not sure what your SNR margin and attenuation are for your link throughout the day then I highly recommend figuring it out. While a tech should be able to do this for you in my experience they don't and given how it changes throughout the day and day to day unless you plan on them living at your house for a week it's better to be able to do this yourself.

On the other hand your line quality might not be a problem at all. I had a modem go bad and certainly won't be buying another, after two, from At&t. Plus my local office likes testing the indoor sprinkler system every other month or so and letting local elementary school tours play in the switching room. :)

Could you explain this? I switched from a local ISP that used ATT DSL, to ATT, and am finding infuriatingly poor download speed early morning and evening...while upload speeds are always good. The local ISP service was always consistent though. What "spot" are you referring to? Just what can we consumers do at our end to make ADSL service reliable?

Re: DSL connection 3x slower then before.

rhf, If you have a modem/router that tells you your line stats and understand what those numbers mean, by trial and error I mean trying to reduce noise that is caused by things in your home by moving the electronic stuff in your home around. For example, try moving the modem, using different phone wires to connect the adsl modem (colors, lengths, two or four wires), turning off electronic devices (especially big ones for me where the frig, eve security lights, and indoor multi-light lamps), and if you have a wireless router and separate dsl modem try separating the two of them. The website I linked above had a number more ideas, if your interested, but I was amazed at how much of a benefit the seemingly small changes like moving the modem to different spots, even within the same room only a few feet away the noise injected into my line was different. Without the ability to see your line stats though this is nearly useless, you would have no way to tell if something you did improved or decreased the noise your home appliances and environment created.

In your case and mine too, there is some added noise injected onto your link from multiple people using there adsl at the same time in the morning and evening. Nothing you can do about that but if you eliminate all the noise created on your end then you may have the added signal strength (snr margin) to power through the added noise beyond your control.

PS: I would have never thought to try half the ridiculous stuff I did till I was able to see the stats changing in real time. I abandoned sanity and just "did stuff" to see what would happen. Some had an impact others didn't I have little theory or model to offer. It all seems a bit random to me, but eventually I found a setup that works and by spot I mean vaguely whatever changes work.

Re: DSL connection 3x slower then before.

Fascinating. On your original post recommendation I got the DLink modem which shows the stats. However, given ATT's poor service, I dropped them and switched to DSL Xtreme and don't have DSL for a couple more days.

What I just cannot understand is why the local ISP--who must use ATT equipment--can be so reliable, while ATT is totally flakey with their own equipment.
