[CA] San Diego DOCSIS 3.0 Plans

After reading this comment »DOCSIS 3.0 testing in San Diego I was interested if anyone had heard any additional information from any Cox Techs, Technical Support, or otherwise on the status of DOCSIS 3.0 in the San Diego market. I've yet to call and ask Cox myself, but before I do I wanted to see if anyone here had any luck finding anything out.

Re: [CA] San Diego DOCSIS 3.0 Plans

I have no association with Cox nor did I call asking about docsis 3 but two days ago I woke up with two bonded downstream channels and getting some very nice DL speeds, the modem I've got is a motorola sb6120

Before I'd get about 20-25Mbit average.

San Diego current status
------------------------
Escondido now has 2 downstreams on every DOCSIS serving group, and about 1/3 of the service groups have a 3rd DOCSIS downstream.

A 3.0 modem will work either way, but in our configuration at this time, only the nodes on service groups with 3 downstreams will allow D3.0 channel bonding.

Current downstream frequencies : 591 mhz, 849 mhz, 855 mhz.

Our goal is to get most of the other Cox SD sites to this same state by December.

2010
-----
That configuration (or better) will be true for 100% of the DOCSIS downstreams sometime in 2010.

We will move the 591 mhz carrier to 843 mhz in Q1. We also will be using 861 and 867 mhz for DOCSIS on selected service groups, those frequencies can only be used by D3 modems.

I'll provide a D3 status update for SD in early November.

Re: [CA] San Diego DOCSIS 3.0 Plans

DOCSIS 3.0 Channel bonding status in SD as of 11/4/2009 :

Oceanside, Escondido, Poway, El Cajon, Federal, Downtown hub sites have channel bonding enabled, but only on about 30 % of the nodes. The remaining nodes will be upgraded to support channel bonding sometime in 2010.

Chula Vista and Vista sites will get the same upgrades later this month, and Alpine will be the last site in December.

So, 30% of the nodes will be 3.0 bonding enabled this year, and 100 % next year. DOCSIS 3.0 SB6120 modems are going on sale again in SD next week (after a firmware snafu caused us to stop).

We are providing updated node lists to the Call Center, but I am not sure how many reps will be able to answer the question: "Does my node support D 3.0 Channel Bonding?"

Guaranteed they'll just shine you on and do whatever they're gonna do. It looks like 'Fanta' (see post) is benefitting from the unannounced upgrade. Of course we gotta get upgraded modems, especially if they're tuning the system for D3. And I have no association with Cox, other than the monthly bill.

Re: [CA] San Diego DOCSIS 3.0 Plans

for those interested the local Fry's (off Aero Dr.) just got the Moto SB6120 back in stock - I was there for something else, saw it, and picked one up.
