Another blow to Fremont, first the A's and now this. This is a great location for a 3rd Walmart though.

WITH TOYOTA'S ANNOUNCEMENT Thursday that it's pulling out of the NUMMI plant in Fremont, a great manufacturing experiment will come to an end.

For 25 years, the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. vehicle plant was a joint venture of General Motors and Toyota. GM stood to gain knowledge from the efficient manufacturing practices of the Japanese firm. Toyota, in turn, was looking for a toehold in the United States

Re: [RIP] Numi

The old Ford plant in Milpitas became the Great Mall (finally).
The GM-built plant (can you say Malibu) is not likely to be sold to another car maker in this economic climate.

The job losses will not stop at the Fremont plant, there are many more jobs lost with the suppliers to NUMMI who also will be closing/moving.

I did work for NUMMI as an independent contractor back in the 90s and loved to tour the place every time I was there. Great place to be if you like robots. Sorry to see it shut down.

I hope they can be successful in keeping it from being shut down, California CAN NOT afford to lose these kinds of good paying jobs. Yeah, that'd be great Ninja, replace those jobs with low paying, dead end Wal-Mart jobs :(

Actually the only way it could have been avoided is if someone with deep pockets bought old GM's share of the partnership. California state govt has no money for doing that and no one else is stepping forward. Sorry but it is going, going, gone.

That's not good news. I bet Arnold could have done more to pressure the Japanese to keep it open, if he'd wanted to.

Re: [RIP] Numi

"Toyota is looking to trim capacity worldwide by almost 1 million vehicles a year. It would have cost them big bucks to buy the entire physical plant from their bankrupt NUMMI partner just to keep the current capacity there, and a loss of demand due to GM killing off Pontiac means no production of the Pontiac Vibe as well. Higher than current capital costs, labor costs, and lowered demand for that plant's output made this a rational decision.
In the meantime they currently have an under-capacity but really new Tundra truck plant in Texas, it made more sense to install the second line in Texas for Tacoma trucks and the supply chain can accommodate the new line there as well.
The Cambridge Ontario "North" plant already is producing Corolla and Matrix and can easily produce more sedan Corollas on the same line.
Toyota then uses the saved capital and opens the Mississippi plant and starts producing Prius there."
