Suddenlink 20mb?

Does anybody have this service in the Bryan/College Station area? I am curious to see how much actual throughput I would get. I am especially interested in torrent speeds.

I'mhearing stuff secondhand, but it appears as though the service is solid. That said, you get 20 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, which is bad news for torrents. Even on my 22/5 Comcast connection I farm out the majority of my torrenting to »fastsh.it...

My wife and I just upgraded to the 20/1 package through SuddenLink in B/CS. After being lied to on the phone by two different people who assured us that our cable modem would work, we had to purchase a new $85 DOCSIS 3 modem from them, but that's not that big of a deal I guess.

Real world, the speeds are good. Speedtest.net shows us at 16.7mbit down / .87mbit up at 8:00 pm. Last night, I downloaded CentOS 5.3 and Ubuntu 9.04 ISOs. My Linux box, going through an HP 100mbit switch into our Linsys WRT54G and through the modem was averaging 2.8MB/sec real download.

So far, we have been pretty satisfied with it.

I just upgraded to the 20mb connection and my speed drops big time. Same problem when I had the 8mb/sec connection.

If I reset the cable modem and router, speedtest reaches 17.6 mbps....which is great. But soon after, the connection drops back to 1-2 mbps.

I'm thinking it might be a ground wire issue?
Idk..it sucks.

You either have a wiring issue ( main line ) or house line, or their just isn't enough bandwidth available in your node. Their might be enough throughput to give you a quick little burst of max speeds but not enough to maintain it over long periods of time. Have you had a tech come out to your house?

Im actually a tech in bcs. we just went to docsis 3.0 recently. but what kind of modem do u have. is your modem 3.0? r u going wireless? is your router N- capable? if not, u wont get ur speeds. u can email me if u would like. sparkplug_hd@yahoo.com. id be happy to help you, or swing out ur way when its convenient. we currently have 4 CMTS's in our plant, so bandwidth should not be a problem, even on peak hours. u might also have a main line problem. but, either way, we need to get u up and running

The modem I just bought (Linksys CM100) is not DOCSIS 3.0.
But I experienced the same "slowness" even when I had the 8mb connection and the Surfboard modem provided by Suddenlink.

That's why I think its a wiring problem..

Do you really need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to get the max speed of the 20 mb connection?

The wireless router I have is a Linksys G router.

sparkplug_hd, I went to the Suddenlink office today and the lady said that if it's a main line problem, I won't be charged to get it fixed. Is that true?

*Theoretically* you can easily get 20 Mbps and 1 Mbps up on a single DOCSIS 1.1 channel each way. However the way Suddenlink has their plant set up that may be running things too close to tolerances. I'm on Comcast and while I could theoretically get 22/5 service on non-channel-bonding equipment, Comcast is conservative with how they let subscribers use their plant so they want to spread my downloading over four channels.

Also, if the modem Suddenlink gave you is indeed a DOCSIS 3 Motorola SurfBoard (SB6120) you've already got a great modem and honestly don't need the CM100 at all.

So yes, you could actually be getting slow speeds because you're only using DOCSIS 2.0 on your end...if DOCSIS 3 bonds three channels and there's 8 Mbps of capacity left on each one you'll get full 20 Mbps speeds on channel bonding and much less without. I wouldn't put it past SL for such a capacity issue to be present.

That said, if SL is telling you it's a line issue, it may well not be your problem. You can check your signal levels though to see whether that's your issue (»192.168.100.1). Post 'em back here and we'll analyze away.

About the G router, there is a possibility that it isn't pumping out enough speed to saturate your 20 Mbps connection. I've seen WRT54G units that'll do 25 Mbps without a problem, but I've also seen units that won't get above 12-14 Mbps.

Try hooking it up straight to the modem and see what you get that way if you haven't already. I would say it would be hard to get your full speeds on a non docsis 3 modem. I'm agreeance with iansltx, it would be unlikely that suddenlink would have that much bandwidth available on one channel all the time. You might get it once in a while but definately not sustainable.

Guys, thanks again for your help.

Turns out the problem is my wireless router.
It's a Linksys WRT54G2 flashed with DD-WRT.

I plugged my computer to the cable modem and the internet is blazing fast. Got 3.0mb/sec. :)

Guess I should buy a Wireless N router?

Was wondering how the 20mb was. At 80/mo and and 80$ modem it's just not a good deal when I pay $19 for 8meg right now. Upload speed would be nice. Are they ever going to raise upload speeds?

Yeah, probably get an N router. You could also try flashing your router back to the Linksys FW...I think DD-WRT has less raw performance than the Linksys stock.

Theoretically an 11g router should be able to handle a 20 Mbps connection, but sometimes that isn't the case.

I think I need a JTAG cable to revert back to the linksys FW. Currently don't have one.

I will prob just wait for a good deal on a wireless N router.

My problem is either DD-WRT or the router since it's refurbished.

Before you scratch the DD-WRT fw, try updating to the latest build. Its not listed on their main pages you'll have to go under the "other downloads" section. They are usually updated about 3 times a month, the latest builds are really good, highly stable, and wring max throughput out of all my connections.

I was having some intermittent issues with the router before updating to the newer builds, so you might wanna give it a whirl.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that you can revert pretty easily to Linksys FW. May not be the case on the G2 though. Never tried it.

if it is a main line problem, you will not be charged. and if it is not, you can always add the safeguard wire insurance, for $5 a month. and cancel it anytime that you would like. that is always an option. if you waited until a tech came out, then you can add the wire insurance, on the spot. he would not have a choice. if you already have it, then there would, of course, be no charge. just a little info, to save u money
