Do you experience lost sync on your Motorola Modem? I am on 58th Ave. close to College Point Blvd, lost sync everyday.. :(
no, no loss of sync. fwiw, firmware 1.0.1.8.

however, last year and the year before that around this time, i had major sync loss issues with my rca modem. the connection would drop randomly, sometimes for a long time, and then it would come back. no rhyme or reason to any of it. had techs come by to check the wiring in my apartment, i swapped modems, they even ran a new drop for me, but it kept happening. eventually the problem went away on its own as (coincidentally?) the weather warmed up. never found out what the problem really was.

is your modem signal okay normally? maybe call up time warner and have them check your upstream snr.

So the docsis 3.0 runs outside the normal signal everyone usually gets? Sorry not very knowledgeable on this topic.

So basically just run out, buy a motorola, then call them to say I've changed my modem? Do I need to tell them it's docsis 3?
This is the story.

SB6120 will bond 4 channels , if you are lets say on channel 297 and like 100 other people are on it and it's slowing you down , the modem will use channel 303, and the 2 others so your speeds should be better.

1) You Buy Modem
2) Call Time Warner (I prefer directly to level3) when I called to get my 2nd modem provisioned it was provisioned within 30 minutes. You need to tell them the HFC MAD ID that is on the box when you buy the modem or on the modem itself.

3) See how it is ! if it's the same return motorola, call time warner to enable your RCA modem

docsis 3 modems will bond multiple downstream channels together whereas your current modem can only use one.

So basically just run out, buy a motorola, then call them to say I've changed my modem? Do I need to tell them it's docsis 3?
yes, buy an sb6120, call up time warner and tell them you purchased your own modem and you'd like to provision it. they will ask you for the make, model, and mac address of the modem. have them read back the information to you to make sure they've got it right. you don't need to tell them it's a docsis 3 modem, at least, i didn't. they'll tell you provisioning will take 2-3 business days, and they'll call you to let you know when it's ready. when you get the call, disconnect your old modem and connect the 6120. and have some patience, it took 5-10 minutes for mine to connect the very first time.

i live in downtown flushing and put up with the crappy primetime download speeds until i got a 6120, and now i get full speed downloads any time, all the time.
So they ddin't split the node when it was upgraded to D3?

i don't know. when the area was upgraded to docsis 3, new downstream frequencies became available (i noticed that where previously i'd be on 589 or 687, i ended up on 297 or 303). for about a week or two after this happened, speeds were fast, even during primetime, but then sunk back down to pre-upgrade levels. getting a sb6120 fixed it. i'm on standard roadrunner.

Still swaying mind on the Wideband or Fios.

For Fios, though it's still not available in my region, should be coming soon hopefully as what people have observed for the past several weeks, such as the truck of Verizon and massive wires being deployed.

For Wideband, I'm basically looking for good upstream speed and caring less on the downstream, and as TWC cable, which later surely will turn into crowded node along with more subscribers, not to mention the 5 MB upload speed with 100 bucks, compared with Fios 25/15 plan with only 70 bucks......which would be much more stable.

So struggling now, and still waiting for further info on Fios :(

FYI, i'm currently using turbo RR and enjoying a vastly crowded node......

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

Thanks for your honest suggestion.

As a note, today when i came back from school i saw TWC truck outisde of my apartment deploying something and now i'm getting 30MB downstream speed, over the 20 MB speed as my turbo plan, though with same upstream speed.

Is that what they called the split of the crowded node, or the Docsis 3.0 also affecting my pre-generation cable net?

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

Probobaly docsis 3.0 upgrades.

If your slow at night get docsis 3.0 modem as said in NYC SLOW speeds thread otherwise if it's fine at night stick with whatever you got :P

fios is definetaly better choice if you look for upload. As long as TWC gives 10 mbps upload I think many people would be happy.

But fios 35/20 gives you 35/35 which is amazing...

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

If everything goes like what guys talk about in the Fios forum, the place where I live hopefully will have Fios before the end of the year.

35/35? you must be scaring me XD, that's just so awesome for the price.

Seems the best plan for me is to stick with turbo and wait to the end of the year.

50/5 for me actually only matters at the 5 not the 50. TWC just don't want us upload things......

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

just got it installed today. they brought the smcd3gn-twc.... Crap. Spoke to level 3, SMC, everyone... it's horrible. All features disabled. To access the login page you need to plug directly in with ethernet, and before hand unplug the coaxial cable to the wall. Also, sometimes it helps to set the ip manually to 192.168.100.102 subnet 255.255.255.0 and router address to 192.168.100.1. Now while I can get through the login password page why not use something like brutus and brute force in. If you use telnet and telnet into the smc it will confirm or refute if a login is valid. i.e. now we know that admin and cusadmin are valid logins (duh...) now we just need someone who is proficient in brutus thc hydra, or any bruteforce cracker to just let it sit either through telnet or http and figure out what this stupid password is... my 2¢

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

When I got wide band, I was moving from RCN Cable to TWC. Most importantly the Tech checked all my cables and connectors and did testing to make sure I would not have any problems with wide band. I originally had the SMC modem, but got my own SB6120 and had that configured. The connection has been solid.

Wideband (docsis 3.0) is available in 11238 - I'm using the Moto SB6120 and getting four bonded downstream channels.

I'm only using Turbo right now, though, but the bonded downstream means that we're wideband capable.

Wideband installed this morning in Richmond Hill, Queens 11418.

Quick question:

I'm using the SMCD3GN modem/router they gave me and I haven't been able to get to the login prompt with LAN ip:

192.168.0.1 (Shows on my ipconfig /all). Anyone know what the correct address would be to atleast get into the diagnostics page?

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

only way i could get in was to plug directly into it (no router then the smc) and to unplug the coaxial cable from the wall. then powercycle it and you will get a 192.168.100.x address. then u can access the 192.168.100.1 as the router but there is no chance getting in... theyve locked everyone out. If you know how to do a brute force attack you could do that to break through but thats about it. also, some times i had to set my ip manually to .2 with the above info to get in.

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

Just got this installed in Red Hook and it's FLYING. However, to all of you that want to do anything advanced with this modem: YOU CAN'T. I called up level 3 tech support. They lock these down and do not allow user modifications. They had to remotely put the smcd3gn into bridge mode so I could at least get all my port forwards working with my usual router.

For those of you that want to get past this, you will need to:

1) Unplug the coax cable because the admin page won't even respond unless you do (»192.168.0.1)
2) Write a brute force attacker for the form on the login page to guess the user and pass because TW won't give it to you

Pretty messed up but they claim to do it because they don't want all the extra tech support that would accompany a bunch of users logging in and breaking things.

Re: Road Runnner up to 50 mbps is ready !

As of now there are no limits impossed on any tiers.

Same for most other companies that co-exist with RR or Verizon.

But they are trying to make a point to show they need to switch to that. Only because they need to fill their greedy pockets faster. As their balance sheets show, and stock price, that they are growing, there is NO need to charge the consumer MORE. At the end, if they change over to a usage based service, everything will go to hell, everyone will be switching or dumping service, and every other country in the world almost is going to laugh at us at our ease to allow greedy CEO's to allow such a stupid thing. I know for one thing, both my TWC and Verzon services will be discontinued the day they impose these stupid usage based tiers. Actually I will even go out of my way to make a small commercial to explain the balance sheet, the pension of the as$h0}3s at these companies, and the proof that they just think we are all idiots and thats why they can get away with it, and see what happens then.
