I also have everything set up in the basement. File server, modem and router. Out of site, out of mind. Remote into it and no need for a monitor. Hopefully if someone breaks in, they don't go down there!!

Re: New network setup! Photos

12 years ago I did a whole 12-drop data, 8 coax and 8 POTS runs in the space of two ceiling joist bays in a basement. Guaranteed I was the only house with structured wiring within a 10 block radius. It's amazing how much space a 10x2 gives for mounting stuff: I had a 12-port patch panel, 66 block for phone, coax splitters, a quadplex power outlet and a small UPS. I put a shelf between two of the joists and stacked up two switches, a dedicated m0n0wall firewall, an A/DSL bridge, and a POE injector. It actually turned out nicer than a structured wiring cabinet because the 9.5" of depth made it easier to route and trace the patch cables.

Only drawback was that my first A/DSL bridge had the lights on the top instead of the front, so I had to stick a mirror on the subfloor so I could see if my broadband was working!

Hiding stuff in the basement is the way to go.

How's the signal strength if you put your WAP in the basement?
