Hearing DSL Modem, could it be filter issue?
Hi everyone. Today I received a replacement DSL modem in order to try and troubleshoot random connection drop outs I was having with my original modem. The good news is that so far anyway, the connection has remained stable. But now I'm having another issue that's not making much sense to me and am wondering if other's have experienced this.
The first time I picked up my landline phone following the installation of the new DSL modem, I noticed that I could hear the sounds of the DSL modem over my phone line, as though the line had no filter on it. But in fact the line had the same filter on it which it had with the original DSL modem. It's one of those 2 port filters that have 1 port that the DSL modem connects to, and the other port, the phone connects to. It's perfect for my situation where I have 1 phone jack and need to connect both the DSL modem and my phone to it.
With the original DSL modem, everything worked fine, I never heard the DSL modem at all, just the way it should be. However on this new modem I just got, I am hearing the DSL modem when I pick up my phone, yet everything is connected just as it was with the original DSL modem. I'm even using the exact same filter which worked fine with the original modem.
Am I in fact having some sort of odd filter issue here or what could be going on? Tests that I've done involving screaming in to the phone to try and get the DSL to lose sync as I'm sure I could do on a truly non-filtered line seem to not result in the DSL going away, so it seems the phone isn't interfering with the modem, but boy I can sure hear the modem on the phone. It's strange though that putting this new modem online would suddenly cause this issue. Any suggestions on how to fix this? If getting another filter is my only option, where can I find the kind of filter I need with the 2 ports? The 1 I have was given to me by a friend some time ago.
Thanks, and other than this issue, my problems so far seem to be resolved.

Hi kd6cae -
Are you still experiencing an issue or were you able to get it resolved? It sounds like a filter issue. Is that the only phone that you have in the house? If not do you hear the noise on any other phone?
Thanks

Re: Hearing DSL Modem, could it be filter issue?
Hello. I ran some tests over the weekend with some interesting results. I had recently also replaced my actual telephone that was on my jack and that's also when I replaced the DSL modem. So I put my old phone back on the phone line, and the noise wasn't there anymore. Our other phone, which is a cordless phone base station, doesn't have the DSL modem noise on it at all, and never has. So in summary on the jack in my computer room where the DSL modem and my telephone is, I have a filter that is a 2 port filter with a connection for the DSL modem and one for the telephone. With my phone that was just given to me connected to the filter, I do hear my DSL modem when it is powered up. But if I disconnect that phone and connect my old telephone to the same exact filter and jack, I hear no DSL modem noise whatsoever.
It's quite odd I say, the second phone I have appears to be the only phone that for whatever reason is allowing DSL modem noise through. The original phone I have hooked to the same exact connections has 0 issues. Any thoughts?

Is it a VTech phone by chance?

Sorry for the delay in replying. No the phone is not a VTech. It's a radio shack phone. I'm still trying to figure out why this phone causes me to hear the DSL modem noise but my older phone with it's broken phone cord that cannot be detached from it is working fine. If the older phone's cord didn't have a broken connector, I'd continue to use it.
I didn't think the type of phone connected to a jack would matter. I'm certainly confused.

I have seen some phones that aren't made/designed well have similar issues in the past. I mentioned VTech because I think the ones that I ran into were that brand.
Thanks

So I'm gathering my only solution for this is find another phone to use. The phone I have was given to me, but since I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a basic corded telephone with a cord that can be detached from the phone and replaced should it's connector break off like the cord on my older phone did, then I can't imagine that'd cost too much at all. I'll certainly look in to that.
