ping 2000-4000 ms...

i posted this before but it "disappeared" so, i'm going to try one more time... i have brighthouse network, brighthouse get's it's internet line through Road Runner, whenever i download a file via P2P, say as an example the savage nation an mp3 file that i download and listen to every day, my ping time will go from 50 ms to 90 and so on and so forth until eventually "doesn't take long" it get's up to 2000 ms and will continue up until it reaches over 4000 ms Response time.. i can guarantee that we have good hardware, we have three computers one of them being vista, the other two being xp"one tower, one brand new laptop" and when ever i go to get a file "no matter the size!" my connection will start to do the same old thing, i have contacted BRIGHTHOUSE and have went up to level two technical support, they have tried to say that the reason is either bad hardware "verified that it isn't that" or it's malware "i reformatted my external hard drive and re-installed ubuntu 9.04 onto it "so that i know that, that is total malarkey" they have even tried to push "it's firefox, you need to clear your browser cache" now i know it's none of this, but i wanted to verify that it isn't just me that thinks this.. i have posted about this in the brighthouse section, they told me to post here, but someone was helping me and i just gave up, until now "giving it that old college try"

i do have wireless, but it is heavily encrypted with a 38 character TKIP WPA password so i don't think that is the problem.. plus i switched out the ddwrt firmed WRT54G for a WRT54GL router with a diffrent dd-wrt firmware... i hope someone can please verify this is NOT a hardware problem..

and btw my connection IS encrypted and i AM running Peer guardian2!

Re: ping 2000-4000 ms...

What are your results after bypassing your router?

FWIW, speedtest.net doesn't seem to deliver very good results for Bright House subs. I consistently get faster results from the Dallas and Washington, DC servers as opposed to geographically closer Tampa. Have you tried your local speed test at »speedtest.cfl.rr.com/ ?

Re: ping 2000-4000 ms...

well like i said in the other topic, we just moved down here, our router's have always worked great until we started using brighthouse, hell i would use one as an AP and the other as a wireless bridge for my xbox360! but i went ahead and disconnected my router and went straight to the modem, that's what that last bit of code is, i have always used speedtest.net but i will have to do those speed tests tonight when i can download something and post back as a comparison to the test results im about to post this is a screen shot of my results, and here is my speed test results from speedtest.net
now i download, like old tv shows/cartoons and radio programs such as the shadow..i do not want to download that much,as i currently have a 160 GB drive and it's only got about 40 GB's of downloaded things on it... but this is over time, not from the last few months...

Re: ping 2000-4000 ms...

Perhaps I should clarify here....while I get faster speed test results from the DC and Dallas servers, speedtest.net still returns sub-par results for me (20/2 tier). While a good measure for real world internet speeds, you're still leaving the Roadrunner network and as such are subject to routing and possible bottlenecks that are out of their control.

No no, of course not :D

I'm assuming from your speed tests you have the 7/512 speed here, is this correct? And when you say your ping times increase, what are your pinging?

I know on my network it took some trial and error to get the packet shaping tweaked so my son's torrent client didn't choke the network. You might also look into your torrent client's settings as far as total connections go, too many can cause a major slowdown. This really sounds like a QOS issue more than anything, which can be handled by prioritizing packets.

Re: ping 2000-4000 ms...

I agree with Beachie... In your torrent client, there is probably an option to set the max bandwidth utilization... Downstream you can usually leave at max (unless you have a tom of downloads going). Upload I never set to more than half of max, which would mean no more than 256kbits/sec (or 32kbytes/sec). If your upload bandwidth is getting maxed out, its going to take forever to get any packets back and forth.

I am assuming from your description that the problem ONLY occurs when doing torrenting, which points to more of a problem/configuration issue with your torrenting software.

i am going to try and reset the max connections and test it,

ok, just tested it and it was downing at around 150 kbps pinging at highest just below 700 ms.. what can i do now?

Re: ping 2000-4000 ms...

I'm no expert with torrents, but if it were me I'd keep playing with it, along with tweaking your router's QOS settings.
