[CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
The "Change" is finally announced.
Cable is finally going all digital. Most of the HD channels in the various markets are being standardized so most of the channels that other markets have had for a while are now present in all markets. There's also mention of some of the new cable box functionality that came with the software update... and that's about it.
The "Change" ends up being rather underwhelming...
Oh well, there's always 6.0.

I am a bit disappointed by the lineup but I am glad to hear that they are finally switching to all digital. Means more bandwidth for other things.

This is not the case in Louisville. We do not have nearly the same HD channels as Bowling Green, Columbus, or Evansville. I am not sure why, but in Insights biggest market Louisville has the least amount of HD channels out there.

Well, I only said that because of the list of HD channels in Wilner's post, hardly any of them were truly new. Almost all of them were previously present in at least one other market.

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
Here is a letter that I sent to Mr. Willner. See what you'll think:
Mr. Willner,
I know you are probably swamped with e-mail today but I want to congratulate you on the launch of Insight Digital 5.0. I think it is a great first step and having everything in digital will be great. I know you and I have discussed this issue before when I wrote you about RCN doing this very same thing. I asked you at the time why Insight was not doing this and you posted a blog about it. Like I said, a very good first step.
Now there are a few things that I do not understand right now. Why is it that Columbus, and Bowling Green are getting HD channels that people here in Louisville, Evansville, and Northern Kentucky are not getting? I know in Columbus you have a lot of competition and that you have to "keep up with the Jones" to maintain your customers. But why not offer all of the channels that you have contracts for to all markets? As you know AT&T has started offering U-Verse here in Louisville, and they will very soon start offering it in Southern Indiana right across the river from Louisville. I can tell you for a fact there is a lot of buzz about this and how Insight will now have to compete with AT&T. Also the channels that have been added to all networks. Most of the channels do not offer original HD content on their channels. Most of the channels just up convert there SD signal to fill the HD channel (Lifetime, WGN, MSNBC, and so on). Why not offer channels that actually produce content in true HD. Examples of this would be The Golf Channel HD, Versue HD, or CBS Sports Channel HD, which I know is in the Columbus market. All three of those channels offer HD programming that are filmed in HD. There is a perfect example of this this past weekend with the Golf Channel. They carried the first two rounds of "The Presidents Cup" exclusively. This was a big time event just like the Ryder Cup last year that was played here in Louisville. Everybody in Insight's markets had to watch this in SD on the digital platform. I know that Comcast owns most of the channels that I am talking about, but you have contracts with them to offer the SD verison of this channels so why not in HD.
Any how, I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how I was feeling. I just want all of the markets that Insight covers to be equal. Thanks again for your efforts in moving Insight forward, and I look forward to more moves in the future.
Thanks,

I'm sorry, but are there any new channels on that list? I spent about 5 minutes looking at it. I do not care about sports or news, so I overlooked any/all of those. I am more towards family and movie channels. I do look forward to BB 30.0, however. When/If AT&T ever brings U-Verse to Eville, I am going with them for TV, probably stick with Insight for BB.

Well, I think the Lifetime HD is new to E'ville, but I couldn't swear to it (not exactly a channel I'd ever pay any attention to. Unfortunately, even in the realm of sports, Fox Sports Midwest HD isn't new; they simply renamed the Special Events HD channel...

I see no mention of this on here or on the front page, but the Insight web page is now listing Broadband 30.0 as "coming soon" with 3 mb upload speed. :)
Edit: I see couch potato mentioned it briefly, but I that's about it.

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
If they go to all Digital ... what does that mean for older SD tv's that are not connected to a box? Will they still be able to get cable or will I have to buy a box for each tv?
If so that would stink.
Thanks for any info.

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
No, what is probably happening right now, is that Insight is FINALLY doing ADS, which pretty much all other cable co. have already done. They are simply taking all the analog channels & duplicating them digitally, so that people with digital boxes get EVERYTHING digitally, but TV's w/out boxes still get what they already have now.
Besides better picture quality on the analog service, the DVR boxes will no longer have to encode the analog channels into a compressed digital video signal to go on the hard drive; it will now simply record from the digital stream on even the analog channels. Since the encoders at the headend do a much better job encoding than the one in the DVR, recordings that were previously from analog channels should take up a little less space on the hard drive now, as well as having better picture quality.
The other thing for Insight is, they will NO longer be required to use boxes with BOTH analog & digital tuners, which also saves money when they have to purchase new ones. (existing boxes should be reprogrammed to automatically go to the digital streams when you select an analog channel)
Now the other question is, will Insight do what some other cable co are doing (like Comcast) & start ditching analog channels altogether. They could eventually start doing this once they get ADS up & running, even going so far as to removing all analog expanded basic, or only some selected channels - guess you'll have to wait & see what they have in store.

And this is a important piece of info Mr Willner left out in the announcement. Saying your all digital comes off as saying a "me-too" when compared to Satellite or AT&T.
And am I the only one that isent pleased on the new myinsight.com

Insight digital 5.0 is a whole lot of marketing with very little substance. Go to myinsight.com, look at the video and tell me 1 thing that is new?
As for 100% digital????? Has this taken effect yet? Willners quote is "The new digital picture will change the way you look at your television, providing crisp, clear picture and sound." No change here in picture.

Simulcast means that if you have a digital box, all channels will be digital. If you don't, you keep your low-end analog channels.

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
The 5.0 upgrade is a let down for me. I was really hoping for more HD and less bells and whistles. The all digital is not really all digital from what I've read, and the Louisville market is still behind other markets being served by Insight. And no we will not get a real reason from Insight as to why. The President's little "follow up" says they are negotiating for more HD but yet don't give the customers all the ones they have now?
Hate to say it but if the next fantastic upgrade is no better than this one I will be looking at other options. I have really been happy with Insight until now, this has changed my mind some.
I don't think I'm the only one feeling this way.............

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 5.0 announced
When I got home last night I noticed a nice looking envelope from Insight in the mail. I opened it and started reading about the Digital 5.0 package and got really excited since I still watch 90% of TV in the older, analog channels, IE Golf on channel 69 or Comedy Central on channel 59.
quote:
For those of you who have a digital set top box, when you tune to any of our classic channels which were previously available only in analog, you will automatically receive the crisp, clear digital signal we are now transmitting
So I checked the digital channels and I cannot see any difference? What gives here? The Golf Channel and Comedy Central still look like poo. Am I missing something?
p.s. my TV is 56 Samsung DLP, Insight Digital box connected via HDMI. Insights HD channels look great, though...

No difference here either, not that i expected any. A digital or analog signal on a TV that big at 480i is going to look like poo to an extent.
