Broadband 30.0 Announced

Looks like it was announced as a upgrade before they finally switch over to Docsis 3.0. My big question is what is the cost going to be, or is it going to be a free upgrade?

I wondered about the modems and supply shortages. Also, will Insight transmit D3 and D1 at the same time or are we going to lose net until a D3 modem is installed??

This means exact Nothing to us in Columbus, you can call it broadband 500.0 for all we care. Were stuck with the Insight RR partnership. and while yes we get the powerboost that comes with RR service, it be nice to substain 15,20,30 Megs for ISO downloads from MSDN. Here's one thing everyone else has over columbus, also the fact that we have to have 2 modems, one for RR/HSI and another seperate one for Phone, since they are on 2 seperate networks, dispite the phone modem having the ability to be a cable modem as well.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

In the past, when the 10Mbit service was new, it was an extra charge over the standard service. When the 20Mbit service debuted, everyone was upgraded to 10Mbit for free and had to pay for 20Mbit. I would hope that everyone will be upgraded to 20Mbit for free and need to pay for 30Mbit as the past has shown to be true; however knowing insight and watching the past makes me think they will continue to be greedy and not offer this as a free upgrade but create a two tier extra fee system.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

Not that I have any insider info, but doesn't the evidence you provided regarding Insight's history of pricing structures disprove the statement you've made?

If I received a free upgrade to 20.0 I wouldn't complain, but I recently downgraded from 20.0 back to 10.0 simply because I don't consider myself in-need of that rate of speed enough to justify the extra monthly expense. If someone were offered 20.0Mbps and now 30.0Mbps as alternatives to the standard 10.0Mbps, they should expect to pay more for them. All that said, Insight's 20.0 upgrade was very competitively priced -- $10 more per month on top of the regular $40 for 10.0.

Wait, you'd be complaining if your $40 10 Mbps wasn't upgraded to 20Mbps, and 30Mbps made available for $50? Sorry, but even if 30/3 gets priced at $70, it's still a prett good deal, compared with what a lot of areas are able to get.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

I think if they just shifted everyone up a tier that would be great, or move the 10.0 Customers to the 20.0, and 20.0 to the 30.0 and reprice the 10.0 service that would work too. I am sure they will probably tack ten bucks onto the 30.0 service though.

Has anyone heard if they are also increasing the business tier? I had to move to the business 4/384 or risk being cut off due to proprietary software I was using while trying to work at home. 4Mb is fine but the 384 is killing me.

I have not, but with my recent bandwidth requirements (I have been downloading server backups to my house) I might have to increase to a business tier. I would love to see a 20/5 business tier, or even a 20/10 at some point in time. Although I think with 30.0 they are still running docsis 1.x and I know the available upload is pretty low.

I'd hardly call going to the business tier an increase. I'd be happy with 4/1. I'm already paying more for the 4/384 tier compared to the 10.0 service and now it looks like I'll be paying more than the 20.0 service. Really, how can a business run anything substantial with a 384 upload? The next tier is 512 upload for an additional $20, and then 768 upload for an additional $40. This is not right.

That's true I suppose. I am just worried about the download I am using. Roughly 25 gigs a night.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

I believe I read that the 30.0 service will be $15 above the 20.0 service. From my view, I wouldn't sign up for that. I currently have the 20.0 service, but running speed tests (from sites other than Insight), I seldom get 20 Megs. Now and then, I do get above 20 megs on certain locations, but the majority of the speed tests I run (on SpeakEasy and Speedtest.net) report less than the 20 megs. Based on that, I don't see any reason to pay an extra $15 a month when I don't even get what I am currently paying for. All things considered, Insight is still a good deal, and generally I am happy with the service, but the speed upgrade (if and when it works) is not worth the price increase.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

Really, I usually get 30 megs on a speed test, but I can't keep it sustained. I get throttled back after about ten seconds to 20 megs. Could be an issue with your modem or wiring or signals... It took me 6 months to get it fixed so that I could get 20.0 working where I am at now. Ended up being a bad amplifier on one of the lines that fed my neighborhood, only reason I was able to get that fixed is because it effected on demand too.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

Insight uses speed burst technology, just like Comcast to get you on and off the network quickly to allow the next person requesting bandwidth a chance for as good of an experience as possible. The next step is of course DOCSIS 3.0, but at that time the largest offering will go to at least 50Mbit/s and the existing 10.0, 20.0 and 30.0 network will be separate. Most legacy modems do not support 3.0, check your existing manufacturer's website to confirm against your model number.

It wouldn't surprise me if Insight doesn't get the users they planed with Docsis 3.0.

I think the price will shock people because of lack of D3 competition.

Saddened that it is an additional $15 on top of the 20. I was holding off on going to 20 in hopes to get some sort of discount. I may just switch to the $59.99 lifetime guaranteed Windstream phone and internet (12Mbps down) so that I can get a slight speed boost, unlimited nationwide calling and save money too. I hate to lose my insightbb e-mail address as I use it for so many accounts online. Time to start updating I suppose.

Re: Broadband 30.0 Announced

Well, my speed may start out at 30 megs, for a second or two, but then usually drops significantly, and below 20 megs. It varies a lot depending on the location, but I never get consistent 20 meg speeds. Wiring has been checked, modem as well (it was replaced earlier). I think Insight advertises speeds "up to" 20 megs. It isn't guaranteed, and it seldom gets there. So, I just can't see paying an additional 15 bucks on top of what I already pay. Maybe their 30 meg service would get me a little faster download, but probably nothing consistently approaching 30 megs for most locations.

I also have the 20 meg service and it's fast enough for me. I don't think I'll be getting the 30 meg either.

Where did you hear that 30.0 will be $15 more than 20.0? Was it speculation, or presented as a fact?
