[ Homephone] Bell Basic Home Phone deactivation fee?

I have "Basic Home Phone" service with Bell, and I'm thinking of switching to another provider. I don't have any other services with them (Internet, etc.). I don't have any special deal or discounts or contract. My question is, if I switch to another provider and port my number, can they charge me a deactivation fee, or require 30-day cancellation notice?

Probably will require 30 day notice, and may try to charge a cancellation fee. I would refuse that fee unless it was brought to your attention when you first purchased homephone.

But if you go with another provider, just set a transfer date at least 30 days in the future, and they should be able to look after your Bell cancellation for you.

Unless you have some weird contract, no.

Call the other phone provider you want to change to and tell them you want to port your number to them. The other phone company will take care of the rest.

You have zero need to contact Bell concerning this at all. Zero. Change provider and don't look back.

Bell tried to make people do this and lost at the CRTC.

If you get some weird bill with this fake deactivation fee (as some people have got) then use the CCTS to file a complaint with damages (which is free of charge for you).

Re: [ Homephone] Bell Basic Home Phone deactivation fee?

It no longer takes a weird contract.

If you live in a rural area that is not subject being regulated, then you need give no notice and they can't charge you a fee.

If you live in an urban non-regulated area, then, if your service was obtained AFTER deregulation, then you may have to give notice and they may charge a termination fee. They should provide you with that info when obtaining service.

If you live in a non-regulated area and your service was obtained before deregulation, then, you don't need to give notice and no termination fee UNLESS you have any unregulated services with Bell, such as Caller ID etc. Any of those will supposedly make your service unregulated and you are supposed to give notice and be charged a fee. Many have complained and had it revoked though because they were not notified properly of the changes.

Re: [ Homephone] Bell Basic Home Phone deactivation fee?

Thank you for the complete answer. I got my service 2 months ago so I guess I'm de-regulated. They did not tell me about a deactivation fee when I bought the service, so I will refuse to pay it if they try to charge me for it. I guess I have to swallow the 30-day charges. God, I hate Bell so much!

How does one know if you live in an area that bell considers rural? I know they want to charge me a fee because we don't live in a city, we live in a small hamlet. I told them i don't think so we've had this service for 15 + years and this is a new charge. I think we have already paid for the lines many times over.

edited for grammer lol

Re: [ Homephone] Bell Basic Home Phone deactivation fee?

Atwood is not in an area which is foreborne ... i.e. it is not deregulated.

So you can tell them to take a hike on a deactivation fee ... the area is NOT foreborne. Heck I live in an area which IS foreborne and told them outright I would not pay a deactivation fee and I wasn't charged. I did give 30 days notice though through the transfer.

{edit} I live in an area that I thought was foreborne ... seems I was wrong ... I'm not on that list! Anyway ... it felt good to tell them that I expected no deactivation fee on my bill!{/edit}

Here's a list of foreborne exchanges ...

I switched to Rogers Home Phone..no contract..no disconnections fees and I speak to people who are in Canada..not outsourced to India or other countries.
I spoke to about 6 people in the billing department at Bell who assured me that there would be no deactivation fee.
On my revised final account..there it was ! about $56. I called the executive office at Bell and they took the charge off.
Absolutely disgraceful!

Re: [ Homephone] Bell Basic Home Phone deactivation fee?

I have recently moved to a new apartment and I called Bell at the end of July to tell them that they should cancel my homephone service on September 1. Then someone from Bell called me back and asked why I want to cancel etc. They did not give me any confirmation number, nothing. I did know about this and did not ask for confirmation number. I thought that is it. They will just cancel my serivce at the due date.

I moved to a new apartment at the end of August and then at the mid of September I realized that Bell did not cancel my phone service. I called them back and they informed me that they don't have any record of my previous cancellation order. Unbelievable!! Now they will not refund the money they charged me for the entire September. Is there anything I can do?

It is even worse that somebody else used my long distance service associated with my Bell service for the entire month of September and I was billed for that also.
What is going on here? How somebody can use my phone line? Is it a inside job? Is it some kind of scam inside Bell? I just don't get it.

Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks for any help.
