[TWC] NEO Start Over
Time Warner Press Release:
Time Warner Cable Launches Start Over
Allows Customers to Restart Television Programs and Movies Already in Progress with the Touch of a Button
Akron, OH (OCTOBER 2009) Time Warner Cable today announced the launch of Start Over, the companys Enhanced TV feature that gives customers the ability to restart a program in progress without any pre-planning or in-home recording devices. Start Over, an exclusive product only available from Time Warner Cable, is being offered free to digital cable customers.
Start Over is enabled by a software upgrade to the existing video on demand (VOD) platform and to the installed base of digital set top boxes. The Start Over system instantaneously captures live television programming for immediate, on demand viewing. When tuning to a Start Over-enabled show in progress, customers are alerted to the feature through an on-screen prompt. By pressing Select on the remote control, the program is immediately restarted from the beginning. Commercials will appear in the same sequence of the show as in the initial telecast. Start Over-enabled programs can be restarted within the shows telecast window.
Start Over delivers to our digital cable subscribers a new level of control over their television and makes it even easier to watch what they want when they want without any pre-planning, said Vin Zachariah, Regional Vice President of Operations, Time Warner Cable Northeast Ohio. Start Over builds on Time Warner Cables long history of technological firsts that provides consumers with the power to take control of their television viewing. We are very excited to be bringing this convenience to our customers.
For the initial launch, Start Over is enabled on 19 networks:
A&E
Biography Channel
Comedy Central
Disney Channel
Food Network
FX
HGTV
History Channel
History International
MTV
National Geographic
Nick
Nicktoons
Nick Jr.
Spike
TBS
TNT
TV Land
VH1
New channels will be added frequently.
Start Over will roll-out to customers in phases October 6 16. By Oct. 16, all eligible customers will have the service.
Some shows on Start Over-enabled channels may not be available with this feature. In this situation, the Start Over prompt will not appear on the screen.
Time Warner Cable's Start Over was named the winner of the 2007 Emmy Award for Outstanding Innovation and Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for Best Use of on Demand Technology over Private (Closed) Networks. Time Warner Cable, Big Band Networks, Concurrent Computer Corp., Harmonic Inc., and Scientific Atlanta shared the win for their partnership on this network-based time shifting application.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
is their a time frame when more channels will be added or is it that [TWC] NEO has to get permission from the different networks or what? This could possibly change my mind on satellite or advanced TV :)

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
I was wondering what that menu meant. I first started seeing the "start over" prompt a week or two ago, but didn't know what it really did.
Tried it tonight, and it worked - eventually. I actually had to press the select button about 3 times, and then it took a minute or two to start up.
It was neat for a few seconds, until I found the major flaw - you have no fast forward control. I tried pressing the button, and a message comes up saying that fast forward is not available. I think you can just pause, play, or stop and return to live TV.

The channels insist on that to allow Start Over.
However "you don't get that on FIOS"

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
When Start Over first launched here three years ago, it was a bit sluggish, over time it improved. Not being able to fast foward sucks, but it's still a cool feature none the less. Now with more and more HD channels getting Start Over, I've been using it more then I ever have.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
We got this in Maine a couple of weeks ago and it is pretty decent. Encore movie channel has the option so when I sit down and see a movie has started that I wanted to see, I can simply start it over..I just wish they would make the Encore HD station have that capability!

Start Over is nice but not having FF is a bad idea.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
the sad thing is that if the networks and advertisers have their way this will replace the dvra that cable company's offer. Either that or they are working ways to pause people who fast forward through commercials and have an ad popup anyways just like you get ads with on-demand now.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
As a customer I find the continuous prompt to be quite annoying. How about an opt out in the Set Top box settings.

You can turn off the popups but it still shows up. It's called Interactive popups. Thats if you use the Navigator software. SARA is different of course.

You're running ODN and that option is a tease. It still shows those stupid popups.

The "Start Over" feature? No it works for me. At first I had no idea what it was and thought it was a glitch. It works for me on all the channels listed.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
Thats not a bad idea nor a glitch they don't want you skipping the ads that you would normally see without start over this technology works like VOD but since it's in real time they cant allow users too ff

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
And the content providers don't want you to fast forward it anyways.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
It doesn't make sense to me that content providers are "not allowing" FF in Start Over mode, because they want us to watch commercials. Play, FF, RW, Pause are key functions of a DVR.
If I record a show, I can replay it and FF all I want.
If I pause a channel on live TV, I can then resume and FF all I want.
The main benefit of Start Over, is that you just tuned into a channel/show, and want to see it from the beginning. At this point, I have already missed everything up until this time, so NOW the content providers "require" me to sit through all their commercials?
It has got to be some sort of technical limitation due to a "live" show running as VOD. I don't think it is a conspiracy to make me watch commercials.

Re: [TWC] NEO Start Over
If I'm correct in saying so I think when you pause or record live tv with a dvr unit you are doing so locally on a hard drive and yes you can FF through the commercials. I might be wrong here but as with "start over" it's disabled as it's done remotely at the cable plant on their servers and are just following the regulations that the networks give TWC probably why their is only a few select networks for now until they get the rights from other networks too.

That kind of illogic is very common among entertainment companies. They have real blinders when it comes to DRM in general. Why indeed, under the worst of circumstances, would they not allow FF with Start Over on HBO? But they don't!
