Re: [Speed Problem] Slow DSL Down Rates at Night
Last night had another 7:35 PM CST disconnect due to "errored seconds" and reset at download speed of 1184. Log shows disconnected due to "errored seconds" at 3:01 AM CST this morning and reset at 2880 download speed. Still holding at 2880 at 10:00 AM CST.
I still need to get a tech out here but from reading this and other threads I'm not the only one with this problem.
Strange...

Re: [Speed Problem] Slow DSL Down Rates at Night
Another bad weekend. Saturday night was down to .5MB download rates again. Sunday morning it was back to normal, but then died again in the evening. It appears to be a load issue at peak times. Reason I went with DSL over cable was for a more stable consistent connection speed. If this continues much longer they will be losing a customer of eight plus years now.
Tried contacting support again, but gave up after a long hold of not getting anyone. Tried the Live Chat and that proved worthless, all I got was a cut-n-paste answer to contact phone support.

Agreed x100...
When high speed internet was available for the 1st time in the upstate back in the late 90s i had Intermedia Cable(now Charter) in my 1st apartment and it was horrible. Once Bellsouth offered DSL as an alternative i switched immediately. I never had a problem with them for the several years i was there. Once i moved into a house i had Charter once again which was terrible again. Dropped Charter all together(TV/Net) and got DirectTV and switched back to DSL(now AT&T) and it has been wonderful up until September/October of this year when the "evening problems" have began along the same time they rolled out U Verse. This has me to believe their local infrastructure is not up to par to handle the bandwidth they are selling...
I REALLY do not want to go back to Charter but i want this issue resolved. I wish a tech would reply here as AT&T tech support is worthless(reset your modem etc). Ill keep checking this thread daily for a response of some sort and keep it alive until we here from someone hopefully.

I also live in the Greenville, SC area and have been having speed and latency issues as of late. I haven't done a line test in a while and don't feel like unplugging the router to go to it again, but I if I remember correctly, margins for line SNR are lowish but acceptable, and they don't change too much.
The first hops for me after my router and modem are 72.167.20.7 and then 72.157.40.16 (for those living closer to Greenville, it seems 72.157.40.16 is the first hop). I usually/used to get 45-50 ms ping to 72.167.20.7 and about the same to 72.157.40.16. i.e. my traffic goes through wherever Greenville residents are being serviced.
These days when I'm noticing slow speeds, I get the same 45-50 ms ping to 72.167.20.7 but 95-100 ms ping to 72.157.40.16. Speed tests give me 1.0 Mbps now rather than the 2.6 Mbps it used to be (my connection is nominally 3.0 Mbps).
If you believe in coincidences, or not, U-Verse isn't yet available where I live. My closest hop doesn't seem to be effected. Greenville on the other hand...

Still having low speeds in the evening. Had a tech come out this weekend and of course everything was fine in the middle of the afternoon. He did get one unusual reading and replaced some components at the main switch. No effect, still having low speeds in the evening, also my upload speeds have dropped by about 30% now as well...

Yeah that's one of the reasons i haven't even bothered having a tech come out because it only happens in the evening and they wont come out that late. Also i know the problem isnt on my end, its a local issue. I mean how hard can it be for them to monitor the issue every evening and correct this?

I had similar issues with DSL Down Rates at Night and even losing sync frequently at night and only at night. This happened for quite awhile and it started out of the blue and ended out of the blue. Funny how it seemed to me that it started around the time that AT&T were installing upgrades to the phone lines and boxes for Uverse in my neighborhood and ended shortly after they were pushing Uverse service in my neighborhood.

GvilleDSL @ 13th Nov 10:58AM:
Re: [Speed Problem] Slow DSL Down Rates at Night
Yeah i have no problems with losing sync its just congestion in the evening hours. High ping times and erratic speeds during this time period(7-11pm). Normally i ping an IP in ATL around 10-20ms or so in optimal conditions but in the evening its 60 ms. Dallas is 80ms when its normally 30ms.
My 1st hop after my modem's IP is usually 8-12ms but during evening hours its 50ms....
Ive had DSL for about 2 years and never had an issue until this started about 2 months or so back.

I've been recording my speeds every night for a month now. I have the 6MB service and have only been averaging 2.7MB. Only 5 nights have been above 5MB, 15 nights have been below 1.5MB.
Still working with a tech that is trying to follow up with the problem. It definitely is nothing to do with my computer or house or even neighborhood. It appears to be a regional thing from the posting on this thread. Bet most people don't notice, because their internet still "works". But if they started monitoring it, I bet they would find slow downs as well. I'm going to talk to some friends of mine that have this DSL and have them start tracking their speeds as well.

Trace route to an IP in Texas i use every day. As you can see the problem starts on hop 3. This is the 1st hop after my modem which under normal conditions is about 8-12 ms. During the evening its 50-70ms which is absurd.
Normally i ping about 32ms to this server. Now its over 80ms every evening.

I'm gonna add mine too here. I live in 30338 area. I've had DSL extreme 3meg for 6 yrs, and the slow download speed problem started since yesterday. It was tested at 2.5-3Meg in the morning, then around noon it became 1.5-1.8meg, and during night time it's 300-700kbps download speed. The upload speed is fine all day long.
The at&t contractor just left. The line was tested good. What's weird is the speed is tested good only on speakeasy.net, but it tested bad on all other sites, such as this dslreports.com, cnet, 2wire.com, and speed.fastaccess.com

All day today I was downloading at anywhere from 5.7 to 7.4, but after 6 pm my D/L speed hovers between 2.8 and 3.4.
I'm waiting on a call back from tech support as I type. They told me last night that for a 6 mb account they consider anything less than 4.8 to be unacceptable.

I firmly believe it has something to do with user loads. The slowdowns always happen right about the time people get home from work in the evenings Mon-Fri, and all weekend long. Possibly the old DSL selling point of each user being on a dedicated line is now not so true, at least for some people.

I could believe that if the phenomena had ramped up over time. This badness we are observing seems to have onset suddenly. At least for me.

Tested my speed at around 3-4pm, now my 3Meg download speed can't even get above 2Meg during the day time anymore. I called the tech support back and they kept wanting to test my line. It's been tested good already last week WTH.
