Thanks for any suggestions, this problem is bugging me! Do I just need to replace the cable modem? Again, my symptoms are: Modem randomly goes out (Motorola SB5100-2.3.8.0-GA-00-NOSH). Can't access through 192.168.100.1 after failure. Online light blinking, not solid. Power cycle fixes everything. Occurs once every 2-3 days.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
I'm in Fort Collins. It's just Comcast fiddlefucking around with the network. I've never had so many outages as I've had in the last two or three weeks in all the years I've been on the network. Transfer speeds are also down, even though connection speeds are up. My guess is that their network in Northern Colorado doesn't have anywhere near the capacity needed to support these speeds and that a few bandwidth hogs taking advantage of the faster speeds are bringing the whole thing to its knees.
I'm downgrading the service to the lowest priced tier on Monday. There's no sense in paying for this. Maybe if they get it back together I'll turn it back up some day.

OP, I apologize for that but it's amazing how quick this starts. Usually it's the 3rd or 4th post. Does it go down at specific
times?

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
No worries,
It tends to happen while I'm away at work, it's hard to pin down a time, usually between 10am and 2pm? I only catch it during the day if I try to remote desktop in, otherwise I come home to find it down. It's annoying because it's not every day. It was Tuesday @ 4pm and Friday mid-day this week.
It also says the same modem log entries (see above) every time an outage occurs.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
The online light blinking means it is trying to authorize and provision itself. It also then accesses some special FTP sites to get configuration info, check firmware, and get the time. Any one of those getting stuck can cause problems.
Also, it might be interesting to see if your IP address is changing at times. I sometimes wonder if maintenance causes your current address to be invalid and it gets blocked in the system and you need to reboot to get it refreshed.
Also, there seems to have been recent firmware updates to several Motorola models. It could also be causing some issues.

I think the guy might be correct. I've experienced the same symptoms lately. I work at home, and use VOIP phones, and once or twice a week Comcast just dies, and the phone calls disconnect and the email can't be reached. I have the Scientific Atlanta box and the "cable" light goes dark. A few seconds later it all comes back by itself.
[edit] since I found this thread, I'll start a log of when I notice the problems and maybe we all can find some commonality.

Flashing online light can also mean BPI. Op your signal levels look ok. I would say that there could be some
issue for you regarding the firmware moto pushed. Also have you spoken w/ comcast regarding any ingress or anything on the network? They will most likely send a premise tech out. There are things they can see that your modem can't. Upstream SNR for example. So we don't get disparity of 2 different issues
rocky, the absence of your cable light and just flashing indicate you hve lots comms to the network. I would suggest getting your coax signals checked.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
Thanks all for the comments so far.
IP Address isn't changing. It's the same everytime I power cycle.
I *just* called comcast as my internet died. He tried to do a reset but couldnt' even talk to the modem, but a power cycle fixed everything (like usual). We both came to the conclusion that it is most likely hardware related, so I'm going to try out a new SB6120 this week once the office opens on Monday. I own my current modem, so I don't want to risk rolling a tech to find out it's my fault and pay service fees. If it is my modem I'll just drop the coin for a 6120.

I recently switched the small business I work for over to comcast business, it hiccuped twice yesterday. Once at 11am, again at 5pm. They're rolling a tech this morning to my office. Since we have VOIP phones even the quickest disconnects are a huge issue.

In addition to VOIP, I've also got a Sprint Airave, and yesterday's hiccup took that, and my phone call, down hard! Please update with Comcast's diagnosis...

No outage today. Tech checked signals and found everything normal... I'm just going to start keeping a detailed log if it reoccurs and use it to get some $$$ back. :/
I think the DOC 2-3 upgrade is causing them to jack around. Why they decide to do that during the day I have no idea.

Internet dropped at 2:13AM. Woke up to the modem unaccessable through IP address. Power cycled and everything's dandy. Log files indicate T3 Timeouts and DHCP and Sync failures from 4:30am on [the log history at 2:13AM got bumped out :( ]

When we were upgraded to D3 last year (mid October), there were various outages at least 2-3 times a week until Christmas. Some only affected the modem, others took everything out.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
I'm in Fort Collins. The same thing is happening here, at least at my modem. I am retired and spend a lot of time on line. My modem has been dropping off line (blinking on line light) at roughly 9-10 am and 2-3 pm for ten to fifteen minutes each time and at least last week, only Monday-Friday.
I call comcast each time. Several instances, my call to CS was intercepted with the announcement that there were known service outages. This leads me to suspect that the outages are maintenance related, particularly given the morning and afternoon outage times during the workweek.
There have not been any outages this week.

I had the exact same problem you're having (Springfield IL). After "many" calls to Comcast over a two week period and trying different ideas, I decided to buy the SB6120. That was three weeks ago and I've not lost connection once.

This may be related to this:
»SB5100 constantly losing upstream channel
And possibly related to the recent SB5100 firmware update if that is what you are running..

I don't have a SB5100 -- have a Scientific Atlanta little black box. Service has also been stable since my last posting (at least I haven't noticed any drops); so maybe the Comcast butt crack boys have worked out their issues.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
Same here in Louisville, CO.
Comcast is screwing around with their network, ostensibly working towards DOCSIS 3, but each time it returns it's just a little bit slower in accessing the Internet, perhaps due to new DOCSIS 3 customers hammering their existing connections.
Thus connections to "real" sites are slower, but connections to speedtest.comcast.net are as fast or faster than before.
Except for their unannounced multi-hour outages overnight. :(

Hi, I have seen 2 different symptoms in this thread - one where a disconnect repairs itself after a few minutes and another where the only fix is a power cycle of the modem. Which issue did you have? (I have the 2nd, have to power cycle.) You posted it fixed on 10/21 - is it still fixed?

Same problem here. This began this past weekend. Will get dropped and require a modem restart to get re-connected. Big downer for playing online games. It's inconsistent in that sometimes I will get several hours before the next drop, and sometimes it will be 15 mins. Signals all look good.

Re: Longmont Colorado HSI Cable Modem Issues: Locks and Drops
In Colorado Springs I have been having the same problem - loss of access to the internet - the router is fine (linksys with dd-wrt loaded), the cable modem does not always show the issue - but if I do a remote reboot it seems to be happy(er). (some times it will auto recover if I don't do anything - no pattern on length of outage, etc)
Last night Fri 13th --- I had at least 15 drop outs - reboots, resets, and nothing seemed to make it happy for more than 10 - 15 mins.
I was only using IM - so that's no big bandwidth hog. Earlier in the day I could not bit-torrent a copy of Fedora 12 beta - however, I was able to download the image directly with average download speed for me.
A friend that lives 10 miles away was having similar issues - drop outs, reboot's of modem / router.
I figured it was time to buy a backup modem - stats on my old modem

The DCC-ACK is interesting. That implies it tried to do a Dynamic Channel Change, but something prevented it from finishing?

If they were - they forgot to tell me - I use web mail vs pop3 or other setup.
Until I get a fixed IP address I don't do local mail.
