Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
I know this my not belong here but for those that can access a modem by the MAC address I wanted to know a little about how that is done. I want to access a little media gadget I have ... a WD TV Live media player remotely through the interent to tranfer files. Is it possible ?
Windows remote access ? Other software ?

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
You cannot directly access a system using it's MAC address over the Internet, but you can send directed broadcasts on a switched network (..LAN) and to a few hosts your ISP exposes you to after you obtain a DHCP lease.
Without explaining all of the finer details of networking, I advice you to read up on the OSI 7 layer model for further clarification.
Communication on the Internet is done using the IP protocol with others layered upon it like TCP, UDP, ICMP and eventually higher level protocols like HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP.
If you have a device located inside your local network and what to exposed it to the Internet, you'll need to setup IP networking and have your router redirect the appropriate packets.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
first off... MAC addresses are used within what is known as a broadcast domain. As an example, if you have two routers connected together and 5 computers connected to each router, one of the 5 computers can only talk to the other 4 computers connected to the same router using a MAC address. This is why we have IP addresses, they work across routers.
So... you need to figure out your IP address, and then configure your router so you can talk to your WD TV live unit from out on the net.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
The WD TV shows up in the LAN with the other computers in the house and I think it has it's own IP address, MAC address etc.
So I need the IP address of the unit or the house which is the cable modem IP address?
How do you guys get into the Cogeco modem when someone gives you just the MAC address? Software? I am obviously not a notwork pro by any means so was hoping a remote access could simply walk me through it?

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
employees can look up an account by MAC, and some even know how to look up its IP directly. Neither are going to tell you the IP.
Your best bet is to figure out if you are behind a router, if you are use google to find what ports need to be forwarded to your WDTV to access it externally. if you dont have a router, you should probably get one as the traffic between the WDTV and your PC may be included in your usage limit.

Im guessing he is behind a router as he says he is able to see it on the LAN with other PC's.
Go here for walkthroughs on forwarding your router ports.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
I am trying to get a general picture here and understanding of what needs to be done.
I install these WD TV Live units in various customer locations and what I am trying to do is have access to send files from my location to them, through the internet.
First though is this might be to difficult, as each and every customer location will be a different internet setup.
So the IP address is used by the internet to understand a specific location on the net. In order to get into a customers LAN and therefore see the WD, you have to be able to enter into that LAN. So I assume the LAN has a IP address, but not sure where it comes from. Is it the router that assigns a unique IP address which when typed into the address bar of your browser allows you to see all the components in that LAN? Or would it be the first thing connected to your internet ... like a cable modem or DSL modem? I would guess that you have to pass through one of these first to be able to get to see the components in the LAN.
So if it is the router, then would the IP address not be written on the outside of the router ... it's unique IP address? Or is this something well hidden and could even change?
Sounds complicated. Wish there was a good software to do what I am trying to do.

Are you able to actually access these units from the WAN?? or is it used just from inside a local network, thats what it sounds like to be but I could be wrong.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
I can access the unit in my local network ... in the house I see the unit as another drive. But what I want to try and figure out is ... can you jump on the internet and get access to the unit in my house and then move files to it.

Thas what I'm saying, try reading the literature on the unit because I'm not sure that is even possible with that box.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
From the looks of the manual, you will need to access a PC within the LAN and transfer the files using that PC.

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
Let me ask this then .... if the unit shows up as another drive in your LAN, is it possible to access this drive with some kind of remote access?

Re: Who can access a modem with the MAC address ?
Maybe there could be a work around with hamachi. Mount the device as a drive, share it, and run hamachi on the Customers PC. You can then vpn into their box via hamachi and see the drive and then be able to dump/pull files from it.
No need for a static IP either as you will be going through the hamachi IP, which does not change unless its reinstalled.
