[CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

I am an RCN customer in Somerville, MA. RCN carries Comcast SportsNet New England HD, but it appears none of the content is actually *in* HD. What's the story? I only care about Celtics games. Is Comcast withholding this from RCN? Is that legal? Is RCN just screwed up? Is RCN being cheap?

I switched to RCN from Comcast a few months back. I specifically checked with the sales rep that RCN carried Comcast SportNet NE in HD. They assured me they did and indeed, channel 685 is labeled as CSNNEHD. The only reason I have anything more than OTA TV is so that I can watch the Celtics regular season games in HD. I feel, at best, mislead by RCN. At worst, I feel lied to.

Anyone know what's up?

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

I seem to recall a similar thread last year.

If memory serves me, Comcast holds exclusive rights to the AWAY games to be broadcast in HD.

Or perhaps it was Comcast wanted an astronomical fee to allow over cable providers to broadcast AWAY games in HD.

The home games should all be in HD.

As I mentioned, I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that being the case...

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I saw some mention of this from threads back in early 2008, but that was back when Comcast was *JUST* starting to broadcast road games in HD, so I was hoping the situation had changed.

I think it's pretty crummy for RCN to not call this out on their channel lineup in a footnote at least. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to reward comcast for the crummy practice of holding this over RCN's head (and I despise Comcast in general), but I do feel lied to by RCN. Also, there's the matter of the 41 road games I'll be watching in standard def (minus any games shown on National TV). This is so disappointing. Like I said, the C's are my only real reason for cable TV.

I'm trying to figure out how many games this will effect me for. Does anyone know how NBA TV broadcasts work? I get that channel. If the Celtics are scheduled to play on that channel, will it be blacked out because it's also on a local channel?

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

For some reason anything in HD for CSN New England has been shown on ch 600. (This includes Celtics preseason games and some Saturday football games). Hopefully they will fix this and actually use the actual CSN HD "channel" for there hd content.

Its actually been extremely aggravating to me that they have not been using CSN New England HD on the proper channel. Hopefully they will start using it correctly again.....

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

Hmmm - well that would be much better than what I had been thinking. I'd just have to get TiVo to make me a custom lineup with channel 600 having the CSNNE HD guide data for the purposes of recording the games. Hopefully that's what it is. I've got an email into RCN so we'll see...

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

The whole point of having 685 is to show what ever they have in hd on that channel. Showing the SD version of the channel 100% of the time on the 685 channel is both misleading and false advertising. They used to show the hd programs on the channel and I am sure the current setup will eventually get fixed. I am sure both RCN and Verizon FIOS would love to get the road games as well, hopefully it will happen some time this season.

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

Nice to see RCN screw up the HD broadcast again on Comcast sportsnet...... Thank god ESPN has the game in HD..... But I wish they would at least show all the home games in HD like they are supposed to!!! So for those Celtics fans in the Boston market wanting tonights game vs the Bulls in HD, ESPN HD has the game as well........

Funny that you posted (and thanks -- I didn't know that the game was on ESPN).
Acting on this post earlier:

I decided to turn to channel 600.

I'm in the Boston area... what do I see -- "Valley Connection. Lehigh Valley's Source for Local Information".

It has their local forecast, payment information, "Town Hall Wednesday", etc...

I guess that channel 600 being an "overflow" channel actually fits the bill... :-)

During the preseason the home games were on the overflow channel 600. The Charlotte game was shown correctly on 685 on Wednesday. Up until Wednesday it was more often then not the "floating" "HD Sports" on that channel. Guess that means no more HD college football.

BOOOO!! RCN really needs to step up and make sure these Celtics games are in HD. There's no excuse.

It looks like we will go one more Celtics home game not in HD...

To say this is frustrating doesn't do it justice. It seems like no one at RCN cares. This issue year after year reoccurring is inexcusable.

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

Tonights game (a home game) wasn't even in HD. It used to be just road games not in HD. RCN tech support is clueless. Of course I'm dealing with someone overseas who doesn't even know who the Celtics are. All they want to do is refresh my cable box or tell me that not all programs are broadcast in HD, which is bogus. It is beyond frustrating.

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

I've tried to contact RCN about this issue but keep being told to call when the issue is actually happening. The problem is that I TiVo the games because I'm usually working or busy.

In my contact with RCN, they insist that they are carrying CSN HD and that I'm somehow not grasping the fact that not all programming is in HD. Unfortunately, I'm busy tomorrow night and won't be able to call and bust on them for that game. I will try to call them during Wednesday away game, which will certainly be in SD. I'll post their response.

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

dprior is correct. I've called them twice about this issue (I live in Boston) and I have to explain the issue about 10 times before they even grasp what is going on. Once they do, they basically say they don't know what else there is nothing they can do. I am as nice as can be but they will continue to repeat the lines:

-"not all programming on an HD channel will be in HD" - yes I know but Celtics games ARE supposed to be broadcast in HD
-"you should turn your box off so we can refresh it" - my box is fine and I see all the other HD channels perfectly
-"you may not be signed up for HD channels" - yes I am

it gets frustrating because they don't get it, yet they work for the company you are having a clear issue with- and at the end of the call- nothing is solved....I'm this close to switching to Comcast, which is too bad because otherwise I think their cable/internet service is pretty good. Unfortunately I am a HUGE Celtics fan...

what is the best # to call?
i've been puzzled by the same thing and was glad to find this forum.
happy to know that i'm not alone, but at the same time, really annoyed that if this many people have the same issue why it is not addressed.

Re: [CATV] CSN New England - Limited/No HD?

I called RCN just now and they said that comcast didn't provide an hd feed for the sunday game, and they are unsure until the time of the game what they will get from comcast. You can also send en email to them here
»newengland.comcastsportsnet.com/···tact_us/

or here...

»newengland.comcastsportsnet.com/···rnships/

at the bottom of the page. Bottom line is they don't give care about rcn. I know the away games are a pain but there is no reason the home games should be in sd instead of hd.
