TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

I got my "wideband" modem installed 3 days after it came out. They gave me a SMC wireless router. By the way the password and login is cusadmin, password for those of you that dont know already. As many of you have read, we were experiencing issues with downloading large files, and the modem losing sync. 5 times techs came out to resolve the issue. finally after 1 day they resolved it mysteriously. So i decided to get rid of their POS modem, and use my SB6120 that i bought from Fry's when it first came out. BTW, the Best Buy is Rego Park has these in stock. Well the problem came back with the Motorola. The modem would lock up after some downloads, BUT i read online that if you updated with the latest firmware, (the firmware i had was 1.0.1.1. Latest is 1.0.1.8) all the problems would go away. That doesnt happen..... Time warner cable of NYC WILL NOT upgrade your personally owned modems. So with this new technology, and a lot of firmware upgrades in the future, BEWARE. A lot of bitching, and some phone calls to motorola and timewarner, i went to best buy, and bought another modem with the latest firmware (look on the box it labels the firmware version number) and did the ol' switch-a-roo. returned the old one. Oh, and another thing, it takes 3 days to provision, and the level 3 tech do not know you can use your own modem. Good luck to all who provision your own modem with wideband service.....

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

At least now you should be doing MUCH better than the piece of crap SMC router is. That usually happens when someone is first to take a step and get the first generation of a tech toy.
Today i had a TWC guy at my gf's place 11103 to install wideband cause sales rep told me over the phone that its available. My gf clearly has 1 single downstream channel 687mhz and 2 upload... I KNEW it's not available, but had him come anyway... He installed a brand new wire and the signal levels are now great, but as i said, the crappy SMC modem they brought gave me about 12 down and 3.7mbps up. No channels bonded. I told him to take that SMC back with him since i didnt want the turbo or whatever they were trying to sell us. We are not paying for installation too.

At least we got brand new drop.

How do you know when it is provisioned?

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

They are suppose to call you when its provisioned. To me, this is terrible. Comcast customer service reps can provision modems. they also provide firmware updates to self owned modems. tells you how much TWC is so behind in service.

Where exactly on the box is the firmware version? I have the box sitting in front of me and I see the exterior label has the part number, the customer serial number, the serial number and the MAC number but nothing that resembles a firmware version.

If you are asking about the Motorola modem, you have to have it plugged in. Then go to 192.168.100.1 and click on Help.

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

I figured that the firmware could be looked up on the config screen. I just confused by Queens RR's statement in his first post that the firmware version is listed on the outside of the box. I dunno if my box is older and now they're including the firmware version but I don't see anything that resembles the firmware on my packaging. Just curious if I was overlooking it.

THey sometimes have a sticker on the plastic wrap stating the firmware version.

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

Hmm, mine doesn't have a sticker on the plastic either. Oh well, it's no big deal. I returned the SB6120 today to Best Buy because I never used it. I bought it because I had the dropped connections problem with the Time Warner-provided SMC router/modem but after its config file was updated, it has been rock steady. Since Time Warner isn't charging a rental fee for the modem and I have it in bridge mode, I figured I'd save some money and stick with what's working for me.

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

Thanks. I;ve read other threads and in the manual, that if the WAN port is active it shouldn't be running. That's definitely not the case with mine.

I'm having difficulty getting a DHCP address to my router, not sure if this is the cause. Basically it's taking a very long time. My Apple Airport completely give up, I tried a Dlink DIR-825 and it took a while, I now have a Linksys WRT610 plugged in and after rebooting the modem, then unplugging and plugging in the ethernet port on the router it picked up an IP. We'll see what happens when I try and renew the IP.

Re: TWCNYC WideBand: Beware of using your own modem.

how long was a while? the very first time i plugged in my 6120 after it got provisioned, it took like 5-10 minutes before i had internet access. subsequent reboots of the modem without changing anything were fairly quick. i did try changing nic's, and it took a bit longer than a simple reboot for internet access to work, but not as long as the very first time i plugged in the modem.

Yeah, I'm not talking about the original provisioning part. That took me ~10 minutes. But to get an IP it takes a bit over a minute from the time I plug a device into the LAN port.

anyone experiencing Motorola Modem reboots by itself lately?

Every night around 8:30pm - 9:30pm, my modem just keep rebooting by itself, stays up for 1 minute or less, then reboot again.

Even I unplug cable from Modem to my Router, still reboots, eventually stops after 30 minutes of random crazy reboot.

My SB6120 is currently at 1.0.1.8. OK for three weeks now. There were some minor glitches during the first couple of weeks, but they looked to be in the TWC backbone (I was running pingplotter most of the time), not the connection to the modem.

I provisioned 2 sb6120... the first time, they called me back 3 days later. this time no one called. I called in, and asked what the status was. they said it was under my account, and they activated in 2 minutes. both time level 3 needed to fill out paperwork to get the modem working.....

Well it turns out, they my modem still looses sync whenever i download large files. so its not the modem.... damn time warner sucks!

signal looks okay, downstream -1, -2, -1, -1, noise 37, upstream power level is 40 or 42. but only 2.56m symbol rate

As far as fixing the dropped connection.. i gave up. TWC wont do anything. So i got the POS SMC installed again. they wanted to charge me another $40 for installation i paid for the first time. I was like WTF?!?!?!?!?! i threatened to cancel and switch to FIOS which is NOT available in my neighborhood.. but i was a try. installed it for free. good luck. I have problem with drop sync almost everyday. Everyday when I looked at SB6120, up time is always less that 24hrs. lol..
TWC sending over Tech the coming Saturday to see what is going on, but I guess not much they can do?

The time changes by the ToD server. When you unplug it, it looses that time. After it gets the upstream synced, the ToD kicks in.

one more question, for those of you using motorola sb6120, what upstream symbol rate you guys have?

i only have 2.56m/s maybe thats why i am kind slow on upload speed?

Hi, i just purchase a sb6120 with the firmware 1.0.1.8 and i got time warner to provision the modem but there is a constant drop where i have to restart the modem over and over like 10 times before i can get a steady signal before it drops again in a hour or so. The time and date that i am receiving on the modem is also wrong it is a day faster than the present time.

If anyone could help with this or suggestion i would to hear it.

I talk to a t3 like 3 times already and each one is telling it is fine the line looks good but then it drops as i talk to them. I even disconnected my router from the modem and attached directly to the computer and it still drops.

Please any time warner guys or anyone with knowledge to solve i would love you all. Or i will go to verizon dsl til fios rolls out for brooklyn in Sunset area.
