[IA] Extremely slow speeds in Iowa City
For the last two months my speeds have been exceptionally slow. I'm supposed to be getting 12/1, but have been lucky to get 5/1. A normal speed is less than 3/1 and can be as low as 0.2/1. At some points during the day I can actually get 10/1 but that has been extremely rare and is only good for 20 or so minutes.
I've had two techs come out so far, at first thought it may have been our modem as it was refurbished but that didn't turn out to be the case once I got a new one and the speeds were still so bad. Had another tech come out after there was about 4 days with absolutely no service whatsoever, he said the wire from the ground to the modem was pretty badly damaged and replaced it. That fixed the service issue but still getting the horrible speeds:
Here's a tracert I did a few minutes ago:

and here are my signal levels:
Forward Path:
Signal Acquired at 111.000 MHz
SNR: 34.0 dB
Received Signal Strength: -2.0 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 30 dBc
Modulation: 256 QAM
Return Path:
Connection: Acquired
Frequency: 25.0 MHz
Power Level: 47.5 dBmV
Channel ID: 2
Modulation: 16 QAM

I took the plunge to the phone company fiber optic and it has been pretty solid. I saw speed plummet when the students came into town.
Probably too much bit torrent.

Looks like I'm going to do the same, two months of this is nauseating, after the third tech came out on Monday and did nothing but what the second one did with no improvement I'm not going to pay for it anymore.

With a ping time of 600+ ms (should be under 50), use this: »www.pingplotter.com/freeware.html and post the results so we can see where the holdup is at.

Re: [IA] Extremely slow speeds in Iowa City
Are you plugged directly into the modem? If not, just to say we did try that and see what you get. If you are plugged directly to the modem then it looks like your CMTS down port is overloaded. To fix this you'll need to get past lvl 1 tech's so call in and ask for a super.

Re: [IA] Extremely slow speeds in Iowa City
@rick: yes I have plugged my computer directly from the modem to PC with no change on the download speed.
@wth: not sure entirely what settings you were looking for and how long you want me to test but here was 5 minutes worth:

Re: [IA] Extremely slow speeds in Iowa City
Your average ping time to the headend (10.3.60.1) of 382ms is WAY to high, as it shouldn't be above 30-35 during primetime, and under 10ms around 6am. Your node/blade/card or whatever mediacom calls it IS overloaded.

Yes, I agree completely definitely get a hold of MediacomJoel or BAINCH or Call Level 1 and ask for a supervisor

Yeah talked to a level 2 guy this morning who echoed what you two have said and said there's no plans or date on repairing it so I think I'm off to qwest

Re: [IA] Extremely slow speeds in Iowa City
sorry for coming back so late, hitting the next wave of papers/midterms so had little time to deal with this.
at any rate
@fuelpuddling I'm on the intersection of Iowa and Johnson
The new report I'm getting is they know it's their problem and they're "waiting on a part" to fix it, and that was about two weeks ago and they also mysteriously "don't know when it'll get here". So I'm just assuming that's some crap made up to keep me on for a little while longer
