[Need Info] RCN HD 720p or 1080p?

What kind of HD is RCN's cable service?

Is there some type of TV to look for? Do you need 1080p? Or is better to get something less?

They pass along whatever the source broadcast is. Some are in 720p, some are in 1080i. I don't believe anyone broadcasts in 1080p at this time.

I wouldn't buy a tv based on RCN's service.

Generally 1080p is becoming "standard", and it can show 1080i and 720p, the two typical HD broadcast standards, well.

For smaller sets (32" or less), or to save some money, 720p is likely to be more than adequate (and remains so for a number of early adopters).

Keep in mind that blu-ray discs take advantage of the 1080p picture. So if you like to watch movies on DVD you might want to get a blu-ray player and a 1080p television, independent of your cable company.

Broadcast is 720p or 1080i. Nothing is broadcasted in 1080p (not even on FiOS).

You only get 1080p on Bluray...

Has stuff like this 1080p over the internet been catching on yet? Or like plans to adopt this technology by NetFlix and such?

Microsoft is planning to start streaming 1080p movies over their Xbox Live service in the next few months. I think it will start becoming more common as connection speeds continue to increase.

I think the average bit rate is the same for 1080i as for 1080p, so for the Internet you might as well use 1080p since the PC monitors all use progressive scanning anyway now. But for broadcast purposes, it takes a higher bandwidth to accommodate 1080p, since the peak bandwidth requirement is greater. So that is why they broadcast in 1080i. But the new TV's convert that to 1080p anyway, and you really won't see a difference.

By the way, I think 720p is fine up to at least a 42 inch set. I wouldn't get much concerned about the difference until you reach more than a 50 inch size, from what I can see myself and read about.
