Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

I'm finding I am unable to send email from an external smtp address with port 2525. According to network solutions this is because my IP is listed as a spam source. Is there anything Cogeco support that frequent here (Krispy?) can do ?

The following says that it is a policy block that prohibits external smtp .. is that true? It has never been the case before?

24.141.0.0/16 is listed on the Policy Block List (PBL)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outbound Email Policy of Cogeco for this IP range:

It is the policy of Cogeco that unauthenticated email sent from this IP address should be sent out only via the designated outbound mail server allocated to Cogeco customers. The outbound mail server for Cogeco customer use is smtp.cogeco.ca For more information on how to setup your Cogeco email see »www.cogeco.ca/en/internet_suppor···l_o.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Removal Procedure

Removal of IP addresses within this range from the PBL is not allowed by the netblock owner's policy.

About The PBL

The Spamhaus Policy Block List ("PBL") is an international anti-spam system maintained by The Spamhaus Project in conjunction with Internet Service Providers and is used by Internet networks to enforce inbound email policies. The PBL database lists end-user IP address ranges which should not be delivering unauthenticated email to any mail server except those provided for specifically for that customer's use. The PBL lists only IP addresses (not domains or email addresses).

For full information on how the PBL operates please see the PBL Home page and the PBL Frequently Asked Questions.

FIVE - TEN >> »www.five-ten-sg.com/blackhole.ph···h=Search

You can always send email to one specific address blackhole20 at five-ten-sg.com even if your mail server is listed here, as long as your mail server is not also on the XBL. Note that this is NOT a list of open relays. Any such email must reference the ip address that is listed here, as determined by this form.

To determine exactly WHY your mail server is listed here, enter the IP address in the form and click on the Search button.

IP address:
IP address 24.141.88.100 is listed here as cgocable.net misc.spam.

If you are not running a mail server on 24.141.88.100, this listing should not affect you in any way, and you should ignore whatever source told you that this might be a problem.

The misc.spam group is mostly (but not entirely) composed of entire addresses blocks that have a) sent spam here, b) have consecutive or missing reverse dns, and c) have no customer sub-delegation via either the controlling RIR (ARIN, RIPE, LACNIC, APNIC, etc) or an rwhois server referenced in the main RIR records.

In particular, 24.141.88.100 has reverse dns of d24-141-88-100.home.cgocable.net. Since your domain name does not appear as the last components in any of those reverse dns names, that needs to be fixed first. Any email sent to the address at the top of this page will be ignored until that is fixed.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

its because your IP is dynamic, it is being lumped in as automatically bad

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

So its nothing specific to me but COGECO as a whole?

And that using external SMTP is permitted?

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Cogeco IP's listed as residential dynamic. Not much you can do to get around other MX's using those PBL's

Personally i just use google for your domain to host my email, since its free after all and has its own backups

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

But does Cogeco really have that policy now? About not allowing external smtp addresses in their network. I know Bell does.

By my experience when I was with Cogeco, yes port 25 outgoing is blocked by default.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

24.141.0.0/16 is a dynamic range so shouldn't be sending mail so the blacklist is valid and actually we provide our residential blocks to SORBS to help stop global spam.

So if you're having problems due to that list one of two things are happening,

1. You're trying to send mail directly versus routing through smtp.cogeco.ca

2. The server you're sending to is admin'd by someone who doesn't know how to properly apply RBLs

If #1 then reconfigure your email client to send through smtp.cogeco.ca, if #2 PM me with more details.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Now that I am forced to use smpt.cogeco.ca I'm still having issues with sending email through your server. There are no error messages or bounce backs. People aren't getting email intermittently. Network Solutions just says take it up with Cogeco - they are blacklisted right now.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Are you certain that people are not receiving your emails? I've been using mail.cogeco.ca for at least 10 years, and send 50+ emails a day through them, and have not had a single issue, including today. What relevant blacklist is Cogeco's mail server supposed to be on?

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Yes I am sure.

I had sent an email this morning from smtp.cogeco.ca with a reply back to email@ghccci.org. I had sent it to admin@ghccci.org and the person at that end this morning told "no email received from you for a while" And yet when I go through our webmail client at network solutions everything goes through no problems. So yes I am absolutely sure there is an issue but I'm not sure what black list I'm or Cogeco is on. Other than what I listed here with MXTOOLS which if I get the gist of the replies was not really a valid blacklist. I will contact Network Solutions again when I'm home this evening and specifically ask that. If Cogeco can trace my IP 24.141.88.100 at approx midnight today ... that would be great. Krispy had told me they had some new sort of logging for email. Any help very appreciated as I am really worried that the majority of my email replies to people with time sensitive issues have not been responded to during the last 2 weeks.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Long story short is that this looks like issues on the remote side ergo nothing Cogeco can fix directly and not a blacklist issue but WarningU2 I've PM'd you more indepth details.

Re: Cogeco Listed As Spammer - Can you remove?

Krispy

Thank you so much. With the information you supplied I finally got through to someone.

I spent an hour on the phone with Tom at Network Solutions.

He was extremely helpful and we eventually figured out why my mail was being blocked. I was not blacklisted nor is Cogeco.

It was Cloudmark. It is a content blocker. Do you know what the content was that was being blocked? It wasn't text. It was my organizations logo! Apparently Cloudmark can block gifs and since nearly all of the email I sent contains a signature with the logo ... it was stopped.

So we had in the end a strange conincidence of events to result in mail issues for the last 3 weeks.

1) Network Solutions changes setup requirements to use smtp.mydomain name and port 2525 rather than mail.mydomain name port 25

2) Cogeco requires with smtp.cogeco.ca port 25 doesn't allow external smtp. The initial blacklist.

3) Network Solutions implement new spam checker - Cloudmark a week or so later.

I've removed the logo and my mail is getting through and a ticket has been open to second level to remove the gif block although they are not sure it can be done.

Thanks again Krispy for your help.

Are they are blocking all gifs? If so, is this normal? all Jpegs are next?

There are just so many variables outside of the ISP's control that can break mail, but until the ISP proves it, its their fault :(

Kudos to you for going above and beyond.

I believe they are if they have been flagged by someone ... ie. Cloudmark user flags an email as spam and voila ... if the logo is part of the message its all spam. The issue is for me our logo is used by several 100 people and some of it is on marketing email. I have no control over it.
