Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

Well, it's clear that UBB is here to stay. I'm on the standard package and always use my allotted BW limit. I also live in a rural community, meaning I have to drive at least 30 mins + to buy games etc;.

I'll gladly just pay the $30 in overage fees each month for digital delivery of media and games as I would be spending at least this much in gas + time to go out to a brick and mortar. My question is : do I still run the risk of my account being suspended for doing so?

It all boils down to whether Cogeco sees the extra money being charged as a penalty to discourage overages.. or genuine compensation for the 'extra service' you've received.

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

Because there is a $30 limit as well as an undefined bandwidth that has to be used before they will cut you off. Cogeco IMHO has not made a case that it is extra service you're buying, rather they are condescending to give you some more service for a "small fee".

I think of it as a penalty for trying to upgrade all my computers to Ubuntu 9.10 as soon as it comes out (/Sarcasm).

Did you mean conceding ? I actually found them quite condescending too when I called to ask about this.. I was treated like I was single-handedly bringing down the entire network by going over my cap.

I downgraded to Standard today, and the rep mentioned that if you consistently blow past the limits you could be disconnected. Now I'm still assuming that if you pay the overage you should have a good margin past that before you'd be d/c.

Same here, I wonder if its company policy to make their customers feel like shit. Even though it isn't true, I bet most reps think it's like a depleting resource that costs Cogeco significant capital -- when in reality it's almost limitless and costs pennies on the gigabyte.

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

This thread brought a smile to my face.

When I 'upgraded' to Standard from Pro, the rep tried to tell me how my experience would suffer - speed drop and all that.

This was a few days before Cogeco announced the speed bump for the Standard tier, even though it was well documented here.

When I pointed out there was no appreciable difference between 14 and 16M, she seemed puzzled. Not only was she unaware of the speed bump, but went as far as to reassure me that as a Cogeco employee she would certainly know about it long before an anonymous internet forum would. ;)

When that didn't work, she explained how I would be charged overages, and I showed her that with the current pricing it would still be cheaper than staying on Pro.

At that point the conversation essentially turned to explain how I would be 'crippling' the network (my words). The usual sob story of how us 'excessive' users are ruining the experience for everyone else.

I finally asked her, if that was the case, and heavy users were affecting the network so badly, why was it ok for the new Ultimate tier to exist? If 100gigs at 14M would break the network, why is 150 (or more) at 50M ok?

Apart from the obvious fact that you're paying $150 bucks a month?

I'm still waiting for that answer

Think of the children and grannies! You'll be crippling the network by not paying Cogeco more money! Shame on you diskdocx, shame on you!

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

I too am quite concerned with this.... I supply the cogeco internet for my tenants and they are consistently going over their 60gb limit. I have no problem paying for the $31.50 for overage...but I am worried that eventually Cogeco is gonna get pissed and blacklist me.

According to their Consommation Site I am already at 11.04Gb and its only Nov 2. By Sept 12 they were already over the 60Gb limit, and by Oct 8th it was over.

I checked it yesterday and as of Oct 31 they were at 357% of the limit. eeek :o

btw.. does anyone know how much usage one of those XBox Live or PS3's use up by all the gaming they do? Is it significant or are they just too lazy to rent movies at the store or watch .. well you know.. tv on an actual television? I supply them with cable tv as well so i know they have it... Heck.. i even gave them a tv.

I'd tell you what the usage was for sept and oct but i guess i am "crippling" the network lol.

Consoles use hardly any bandwidth for gaming alone, but PS3 users download a significant amount of data obtaining demos and such.

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

same goes for xbox360 demos...

i think joecool was refering to movie downloads as well direct to the console, not just gaming in general

Movies are ~6gig for HD and 2gig for SD on the 360 (using orphan as an example)

if they download to PC then multiply that by how many copies are downloaded... 30min of 720p x264 content can be 600mb+, if all 4 roommates download a copy of last weeks simpsons episode to watch (instead of sharing all downloads in a central location) at their leisure its 2.4gb (times however many other shows are watched that week)

Im just trying to figure out a way that they could cut down on their excessive usage. Example: Sept 126Gb d/l, and 86Gb u/l

What the heck are they doing??

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

They must be torrenting or some sort of P2P on their PC's? If you really want to know, you can enlist the help of someone who can help you determine that. Or you could sit down and discuss this with them?

What the heck are they doing??
Download 1 game = 7-12GB
Download 1 dvdrip movie = 700-900MB
Download 1 720p movie = 1.5-3GB
Download 1 1080p movie 6GB-15GB
Stream 1 hour of youtube = 500MB-4GB
Stream/Download 1 show = 300MB-5GB based on quality
Download 1 album at 320kbps = 250MB

Plus, it looks like they're doing a lot of seeding too -- so, I'd kindly ask them to close their P2P software when they're done downloading to keep the bandwidth down. You could probably cut that 86GB by 80%.

It's very easy to do 100GB+ in a month these days.

If you're worried about bandwidth, switch to the business starter package. It'll be saving you $33 a month and the cap is not enforced. Only one person that I know of has been suspended and that was well over 800% bandwidth usage, almost a TB. I wouldn't worry about 200GB - I've been doing about 300GB every month, minus last month.

Just be glad they don't have BluRay burners.

Saw the scene release of Up, complete BR image...

Clocked in at 45gigs.

There's essentially your monthly bitcap in one shot.

(no, I'm not condoning piracy, just presenting for research purposes :D )

Hmmm....I wonder who that was ;)

The suspension policy changes from time to time. So they could be lax this month but maybe 6 months or a year from now, they could be different.

I think Cogeco is responding a little to user demands....albeit a little slow for my taste. If people are using more than 100 GB, there's a very high chance that they're downloading videos.

Re: Has anyone been cut off for over-usage?

As far as I know, Cogeco just started enforcing this 60 gig cap. I have the exact same problem as you do. Student housing, I provide the internet, the internet downloads are super high. So far, Cogeco is just charging me the $30 a month for over and above the 60 gb cap. I'm pretty concerned though because my tenants are using almost 400gb's per month! I don't know what's going to happen or when but one thing I'm certain of is make sure you have password protection if you're using wireless. Otherwise the entire neighbourhood is using your connection. Cogeco will not help you with this. If you have a dlink router, go to 192.168.0.1 and follow the prompts.
Good luck.

Tenants paying rent? This sounds like a business then... so you should get the appropriate business package and charge your tenants more for their internet. If they're using more internet than they're allocated by the provider with the default package, they have to pay more money.

If that doesn't sound feasible, you should pay someone to configure things so these people are properly bandwidth capped or throttled so they can't exceed this amount.
