[DSL] Modem indicates Im connected, but...

Hello, A few months back, I couldnt connect to the internet. So I checked my modem lights: All were the same as when it was working. so I rebooted the modem and same was happening. So I called the tech support line and they gave me the advice that my browser may be corrupt and I should go into a business such as geek squad. So I did as was recommended and everything was fine. So, I came onto my laptop ( Wireless is working for some reason) and found this forum hoping for some help! Please, any help or advice would be wonderfull!

Thanks for reading.

I think you may be a bit lost as this forum is for DSLX users. Is Roadrunner your ISP? If not RR, then who is your ISP?

Then you are in the right forum. :)

How about some more info from you - what modem are you using? Are you using a router - if so what model? Any other info would be good too.

Based on your post it sounds like you are connected to the Internet without any issues via your laptop but you aren't able to browse on your desktop due to a browser issue.

What browser are you using? If you are having problems with Internet explorer, I would recommend trying to downloading / installing either Firefox or Chrome.

This may be a dumb question, but Im not that tech savy; so here it goes. How am I supposed to DL Firefox or GC w/o having internet on the desktop?

I would recommend downloading it to the laptop and then transferring it via a USP flash drive.

Here is a couple of things to try to see if your problem is the Web Browser or something else.

1st Open IE and use the Tools -> Internet Options and clear all your cookies, temp files, and history. Then try to use IE. If it works then you should be OK. If not, go to step 2.
2nd - go to Start -> Run and type in CMD to open a CMD shell. At the prompt type IPCONFIG / all. You should get a listing of all of your network connections with numbers listed like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. If you want paste this into a reply to the group but change the numbers to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx before posting for security reasons.
3rd - in the list you will see the DNS Servers address. At the prompt type PING {dnsserver_address} -- where this is the number you see listed in the IPCONFIG report. If you are able to ping the DNS server then you are in fact connected. If not, then you have something else broken and probably not just the IE Web browser. Let us know how it goes.
