frequent disconnect with MLPPP/Teksavvy
hi all,
I have very frequent disconnection problem with teksavvy, I seek your help in debugging it.
I have switched from a 3rd-party DSl provider to teksavvy for the MLPPP. Prior to this, I stayed with the previous 3rd-party for 2 years. My house is 13-years old and when I first joint DSL my profile was set to 7mb. It worked very well for the past 2 years.
Eventually I got fed up the throttling and switch to teksavvy with mlppp. I bought a tplink 8816 modem (bridge mode) and an asus wl520gu modem. I flashed the modem with mlppp/tomato 1.19, reset the nvram, and entered the appropriate settings.
While the MLPPP worked to avoid throttling, I noticed that I get VERY frequent disconnection, some times 3-4 times a day. Since I use VOIP it gets very annoying.
At first, I thought it was the tomato problem. So I waited patiently and flashed with tomato 1.25, reset the nvram, and re-entered all my settings. In particular, I made sure that:
LCP Echo Interval = 30
LCP Echo Adaptive Interval = 2
LCP Echo Fail =12
as per the documentation. Everything else was left at the default except for my QOS/wireless.
Still, I am experiencing very frequent disconnection. Below is my logs from the modem. Can someone please help me in debugging if this is teksavvy problem or my hardware. As I've said previously, everything was ok for 2-years with my previous DSL provider until I switch to Teksavvy/MLPPP. I would like to find out if the MLPPP server is causing the problem.
thanks,

I think you could try to use a different modem, e.g. st516, let's see if it works.

Re: frequent disconnect with MLPPP/Teksavvy
I get the same problem here with a ST516v6 with Linksys WRTSL54GS router with Tomato/MLPPP 1.21-mp2. When I set it to MLPPP-Single Link I get frequent disconnects (10+ per day), and when I set MLPPP to Disabled, it works fine, connection is stable (uptime 9+ days on same PPPoE session).

Re: frequent disconnect with MLPPP/Teksavvy
hi,
Both the DSL modem and the router are highly recommended by people of this forum and since they were brand-new (purchased in Aug) I would not think the problems are within my hardwares. Also, I've had very solid connection for 2-years prior to this so, unless Bell is playing tricks here, I don't think it is my line either.
Is it possible that the MLPPP server on Teksavvy is unstable?
Please advise. I rely on VOIP for LD calls (newborn at home) and having an unstable internet connection is rather frustrating/inconvenient.
thanks,

Got a call from Jeff of Teksavvy last night: Bell had changed my profile down to 4Mb. I don't mind the downgrade as long as the connection is stable. Will report back in a few days to see if this was the problem.

Dear Teksavvy,
I'm still experiencing very frequent disconnection even though my line was downgraded to 4Mb/sec. Below is a simple analysis of my tomato log: as one can see, the disconnection is VERY frequent:

Hi Chene,
Does your DSL link ever drop? You haven't mentioned it, so I don't want to assume anything here.
I suggest connecting to your DSL modem and obtaining the line stats just to verify what profile you are on, and what your line stats actually are. I'm not sure if this is even possible with your modem.
Based on the results, I'd go from there.

This line in your logs is suspicious:
Nov 1 19:55:18 tomato local2.info pppd[19576]: Terminating on signal 15
That appears to be the initial entry relating to the disconnections. This is not, if memory serves, a normal disconnection; it apparently wasn't prompted by anything.
I'm trying to get DSL_Ricer to take a look at this, but he's currently sick.

hi all,
First off, thanks for all the responses. It *appears* to be a line noise problem which I'm trying to sort out with Bell directly. We started to notice static-like noise on our landline and we think these two are related.
