question regarding cogeco HD tv

Hey guys, so I recently bought a HD DVR, the HD channels, and sports package from cogeco. (I would post this normally in their forum, but its a ghost town and I know most people here know their stuff).

The picture is a little 'grainy', not overly impressed but not worth crying about to them. Example the world series game that's on right now, and I can't imagine Fox would cheap out on their cameras for the world series. Anyone else have a issue, this is the first time I've had HDTV so there's nothing I can compare it to.

My major question I have for those who have the same service, are you using the 3 plug-in cables (red white yellow or whatever they are) that came with it, or are you using HDMI? Is there ANY sort of picture quality difference between the two? My HDTV only has 1 HDMI hookup, making it a real pain in the butt everytime I want to fire up my xbox.

Your just using straight RCA cables = fail for HD, you will not see HD the way it is suppose to be with those cables.

To get HD you need to you the component cables (blue, green, red, red, white) that are supplied or to use an HDMI cable.

If you are using the composite cables then yes it would be piss poor. You need the component cables (Red Green Blue) or an HDMI if your receiver has HDMI. Note that Cogeco does not support HDMI.

As others have said, you definitely need the component or HDMI cables.

It is debatable whether or not you will appreciate a difference between the two - it all depends on your TV screen, room setup and viewing distance.

I would also suggest you look at getting an HDMI switcher. I picked one up from Monoprice a few years ago when I needed extra inputs (at that time had PS3, XBOX360 and upconverting DVD player all running off HDMI, in addition to the DVI/HDMI from the cable receiver).

It wasn't that model, but same idea. You may be able to find one locally, as they are more widely available now. Probably could get an older model cheaper off eBay as well.

I have since upgraded my receiver, and it manages all the HDMI inputs.

As a final observation, I still find the HD signal a bit grainy. Especially the CG graphics on the sports programming. It does tend to pixellate.

I did ask one of the techs during a service call (unrelated issue) who said it was the TV's fault - refresh rate couldn't keep up with the signal.

I didn't question it at the time, but in retrospect should have pushed. I don't see this grain with either bluray or HD games - both of which would send data at a higher bitrate than HD TV signals.
