[Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

I'm having pretty big speed issues over the past 1-2 weeks here in Chicago, usually only in the evenings. In the very early hours of the morning it will switch from max 1mbit to the full 10. Some evenings I cannot even watch something on Hulu or YouTube without buffering every 30 seconds.

This is directly connected to the router after a hard-reset with nothing else running on the testing machine.

I'm also experiencing much slower speeds lately, also on the North side in Lakeview. This always happens when it starts getting colder. I'm supposed to have 20Mbps.

Hello I signed up for an account just to say "Me too!". No luck after reseting everything. Any have any improvement?

Test returned 2.33 download and 0.68 up

I'm supposed to have 10 down.

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

Been having the same issues on North Side of Chicago (Lincoln Park by Diversey and Surf). Slows down consistently at night. If I get home at 5pm I'll be at 10mbs. I can watch the the speed decrease and get flaky progressively through the night. Called support and they had me go through the testing and they are now monitoring my line.

Did anyone else call support?

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

Support is only useful if there is packet loss or your line is dead. RCN doesn't provide any of their cable customers with SLAs that specify speed and their advertising marks "up to" so as long as your line is active and at some point during the day you can hit your speed you are still getting service.

I'm about ready to call up Comcast and switch. This is really getting out of hand.

Ditto here, in Lakeview (Belmont & Broadway). Been an issue for at least 2 weeks. I pay for the "Mach 10" service.

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

I was talking with a friend last night and he was getting about 2Mbps at 10PM (I was getting 1, but, whatever)... my speed increased to something reasonable at approximately 3AM and I'm able to max out the line now (6AM)

This is a city-wide problem

Is there anyone from RCN who can comment?? I am surprised that this many people can describe issues that are so similar and no one from RCN has anything to say. And now, there is another thread about a very similar issue in New York.

At 10:15 PM on a Friday night, my speeds are still lower than they should be (they should be 10 Mbps)

To be fair, that is just one guy reporting a problem. A single user having an issue is a lot different than an entire city slowing down at the same time.

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

nickcatal, what area of Chicago are you in? I was having the same issue that your now experiencing last year about this same time. They were working in the area then and so far I havent had the same issue yet.

Im in Edgewater, on the Mach10 or whatever they call it now and I rarely see the line dip at all.

I would recommend calling local care, and if you dont get an adequate response from them, then you should call their corporate office. Thats what it took last year for me to get a response. If you need some names pm me and I can provide you some of them.

I'm in southeast Rodgers Park and my friend (who has a similar issue) is in northeast Edgewater (near the Loyola campus)

I concede that I did jump the gun on that one, but it now looks like there are others in NY, too.

Has anyone called RCN about this? I'd really like to, but haven't been able to find a chunk of time during which I can wait on hold to speak to someone.

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

Yup - I called. Tech support was quick to answer to but couldn't figure anything out. Tech said RCN would monitor my line and I should call back in a day or so to see if there were any "results". When I called back they didn't know anything about a monitor. Was kind of annoying.
Also, funny thing is when they tested my line and for a short time my speed increased. The tech said that proved it was my router. I had him stay on line for a few minutes longer and sure enough my speeds dropped back down.
This has nothing to do with my router. It is very fast early in the morning and most of day. It only slows down at night during the peak time. Tonight I'm at 1.8mbs out of possible 10.

Re: [Speed] Constant Speed issues in Chicago

Yea, this is definitely an annoying issue for me as well (Lakeview). Luckily I'm a nightowl so I can get my speed starting around midnight or 1am but when I want to watch the latest episode of Curb or Dexter I might as well not even bother. I think it's fine to not get the ENTIRE 10meg speed all day every day but this kind of congestion is unacceptable.

Having terrible speed problems as well. Download became incredibly slow in the last few days.

Foward Signal to Noise 38.3 dB
Downstream Ratelimit 22000000
Forward Power Level 1.6 dBmV
Upstream Ratelimit 2200000

Modem Transmit Power is extremely high. They are sending a tech out soon but it looks like it is a problem general to my area. I'm in Andersonville.
