Bad Internet connection right now? Bad cable modem?
Is it me or Internet really bad right now? Slow, not connecting, fast sometimes, etc.? :(

A cable modem problem?
Hmm, things got better now but for weird reason my cable modem(?) went crazy. I got packet losses from it (192.168.100.1) and couldn't access its internal Web pages fully (never finished or doesn't load even in text mode browsers or without graphics) to get logs and statistics, even if I unplugged and replugged its power (same for my Linksys router).
Examples of pings from Linux/Debian box:
--- 192.168.100.1 ping statistics ---
45 packets transmitted, 38 received, 15% packet loss, time 44052ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 2.063/2.109/2.296/0.067 ms
I did manage to get through to see logs very slowly (note had to power cycled the modem earlier hence the "time not established" and couldn't get the older logs before that cycle):
Anyways, things were starting to get slow after 10:00 PM PST and got worse. Since I noticed my boxes to 192.168.100.1 showed packet losses (no problems to my router), I thought I had a bad/dying CAT5 network cable so I tried another one and a shorter one but still had the same problem.
I only had this Ambit/Ubee U10C018 cable modem since 10/4/2008 from the local TWC office. Is my cable modem already going bad? Maybe a known issue?
I was going to connect the modem to my updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 box, but I couldn't find the USB cable for the modem. I cannot find it in its coardboard box and cannot remember if it came with one. Did it?
Also, this is the first time I have seen things go wacky. Thank you in advance. :)

Re: A cable modem problem?
I looked for that modem on line and the data sheet says the USB interface is 1.1. That's about 12Mbps, as I recall. That's not really as good as a NIC with 100Mbps. Doesn't your XP Pro SP3 have a network card?

Yes, I am using a NIC. I wanted to test out USB connection.
I think I resolved the problem. Dying router. I switched to my old Netgear RT311 router and things were better.

Slow again...
Hmm, slow again and losing packets to the gateway.
-- 76.91.4.1 ping statistics ---
9 packets transmitted, 6 received, 33% packet loss, time 8018ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 36.521/591.403/2445.521/861.858 ms, pipe 3

Re: Slow again...
I've been hacking intermittent packet loss since January. Time Warner has not been able to find the problem. Good luck
